3. Developing trainee translators’ instrumental subcompetence using query tools and corpora

Translation competence can be broken down into different subcompetences. One of them is instrumental subcompetence, which is related, among other things, to the knowledge and skills involved in using all the kinds of documentary resources and new technologies translators require (PACTE). To develop instrumental subcompetence in the classroom, translator trainers can use several types of activities that emphasise some of its aspects, such as the use of dictionaries and terminology databases, parallel texts, translation memories, search engines, etc. The aim of this paper is to share our experience of developing trainee translators’ instrumental subcompetence through training activities involving corpus use. First, we briefly review the concept of translation competence and mention some previous works whose authors, in one way or another, deal with aspects of instrumental subcompetence. Next, we review the concept of corpora and look at some of the different types of such resources available to translators. We then present a series of activities involving a variety of software and corpora, specifically Google (web as corpus), MS Word (lexical corpora), Sketch Engine (ad hoc corpora), Context (parallel corpora) and AntConc (comparable corpora). To successfully complete the exercises proposed, trainee translators must use different query languages to achieve different goals, including retrieving parallel texts, editing glossaries, finding translation equivalents and identifying specialized phraseology. In our experience, students seem to feel comfortable with such exercises and find them useful for acquiring not only a deep knowledge of how to use a range of query tools effectively but also awareness of other aspects of translation (analysis and features of parallel texts, find and replace text functions, content of stable multilingual corpora, etc.). La competencia traductora puede descomponerse en diferentes subcompetencias, las cuales se encuentra la subcompetencia instrumental, que puede relacionarse, entre otras cosas, tanto con los conocimientos como con las habilidades referidas al uso de todo tipo de fuentes de documentación y de las nuevas tecnologías necesarias para el traductor (PACTE). El desarrollo de tal sucompetencia dentro del aula de traducción puede llegar a materializarse en diferentes tipos de actividades que hagan énfasis en alguno de los aspectos que componen tal subcompetencia: uso de diccionarios y bases de datos terminológicas, textos paralelos, memorias de traducción, motores de búsqueda, etc. El objetivo de este trabajo no es otro que compartir nuestra experiencia en el desarrollo precisamente de la subcompetencia instrumental de los traductores en formación mediante actividades que hacen énfasis en el uso de corpus. En primer lugar, presentamos brevemente el concepto de competencia traductora, y reseñamos algunos trabajos previos que, de una manera u otra, inciden en el desarrollo de la subcompetencia instrumental. A continuación, repasamos el concepto de corpus, así como algunos de los diferentes tipos que los traductores pueden utilizar. Por último, presentamos una serie de actividades que implican diferentes tipos de software, corpus y objetivos: Google (web as corpus), Word (corpus léxicos), Sketch Engine (corpus ad hoc), Context (corpus paralelos) y AntConc (corpus comparables). Para resolver las actividades propuestas, los traductores en formación deben utilizar expresiones irregulares distintas con el ánimo de alcanzar diferentes objetivos: buscar textos paralelos, manipular glosarios, buscar equivalentes o identificar fraseología especializada. Según nuestra experiencia, los estudiantes parecen sentirse cómodos con este tipo de ejercicios y los encuentran útiles para conocer a fondo no solo cómo utilizar de manera efectiva las herramientas de también otros aspectos de la traducción (análisis y características de textos paralelos, funciones de buscar y remplazar, contenidos de corpus estables multilingües, etc.).

This article is the English version of “Terminología y traducción económica francés-español: evaluación de recursos terminológicos en el ámbito contable” by Daniel Gallego Hernández. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. The aim of this paper is to evaluate a series of terminology resources and determine their suitability to the practice of French-Spanish translation of accounting documents. First we identify the terminology needs of a specific group of translator trainees when facing business translation, as well as the resources they use particularly when translating annual accounts. Then, we select various terminology resources used in this context and evaluate them according to their needs. The results suggest the development of a French-Spanish dictionary of accounting terms adapted to the terminology needs of the practice of translation in this area. El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo evaluar una serie de recursos terminológicos y determinar su adecuación a la práctica de la traducción francés-español de documentos contables. En un primer momento, se identifican las necesidades terminológicas de un colectivo muy concreto de traductores en formación en el ámbito de la traducción económica, así como los recursos que emplean en la práctica de este tipo de traducción, concretamente, en la traducción de cuentas anuales. A continuación, se seleccionan diversos recursos terminológicos utilizados en este contexto y se evalúan conforme a las necesidades previamente detectadas. Los resultados invitan a la elaboración de un diccionario francés-español especializado en el ámbito de la contabilidad y adaptado a las necesidades terminológicas de la práctica de la traducción para este ámbito.

5. Testing a methodological framework for retrieving parallel texts in the domain of business translation.

Parallel texts complement other documentary resources such as dictionaries, glossaries and terminology databases. Although translators have used them for a long time, there seems to be a lack of consensus on both how to design and how to use them. Against this backdrop, I propose a methodological framework that systematises the retrieval of parallel texts with search engines. First, I review a number of studies on the concept of parallel texts as well as the use of search engines in translation. Next, I describe the proposed framework. I then consider a series of case studies and apply the model to 10 texts from the field of economics and business. The aim is to assess the hits Google provides in response to a series of search queries. The results obtained show how useful a detailed knowledge of the texts to be retrieved and their possible location on the web is. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. The use of corpora as translation resources: A study based on a survey of Spanish professional translators.

The aim of this paper is to describe the use that professional translators make of corpora as translation resources. First, we briefly review the literature on translation practitioners’ use of corpora in the contexts of both translation training and professional translation. Then we present our survey-based study, analyse the uptake of corpora among Spanish translators and describe the use of this kind of translation resource. The results show that even if corpora are not as frequently used as other kinds of resources, such as dictionaries, there are professional translators who do use corpora, in a variety of ways, in their work. Additionally, non-users do not seem entirely sceptical about corpora. Against that backdrop, translator trainers are invited to continue to report on how corpora can be used as translation resources. 8. The French Terminology of Consolidated Statements of Profit or Loss: A Status Quo

This paper deals with language variation in the terminology of consolidated financial statements in French. It analyzes the terminology used by listed companies in different French-speaking countries. The paper investigates how the International Financial Reporting Standards developed by the International Accounting Standards Board have been applied at a linguistic level. For this purpose, a small, specialized corpus of consolidated statements of profit or loss from companies in Belgium, Canada, France, Morocco and Switzerland has been built. The analysis pertains to a variety of aspects relevant to translation pedagogy and practice: terminology, language variation, and business, in particular financial, communication. The results reveal terminological practices in accounting language data from authentic contexts of usage. As such, they help bridge the gap between the profession and academia in translator training. At the same time, they show that the level of harmonization and standardization in the language of accounting is lower than might be expected.
