We present the results of our final analysis of the full data set of gp1(Q2), the spin structure function of the proton, collected using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory in 2000–2001. Polarized electrons with energies of 1.6, 2.5, 4.2, and 5.7 GeV were scattered from proton targets (15NH3 dynamically polarized along the beam direction) and detected with CLAS. From the measured double spin asymmetries, we extracted virtual photon asymmetries Ap1 and Ap2 and spin structure functions gp1 and gp2 over a wide kinematic range (0.05 GeV2

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The double-polarization observable E was studied for the reaction γp → pω using the CEBAF Large\ud Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and the\ud longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target (FROST). The observable was measured from the charged decay\ud mode of the meson, ω → π+π−π0, using a circularly polarized tagged-photon beam with energies ranging\ud from the ω threshold at 1.1 to 2.3 GeV. A partial-wave analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina framework found\ud dominant contributions from the 3/2+ partial wave near threshold, which is identified with the subthreshold\ud N(1720) 3/2+ nucleon resonance. To describe the entire data set, which consisted of ω differential cross sections\ud and a large variety of polarization observables, further contributions from other nucleon resonances were found\ud to be necessary. With respect to nonresonant mechanisms, π exchange in the t channel was found to remain small\ud across the analyzed energy range, while Pomeron t-channel exchange gradually grew from the reaction threshold\ud to dominate all other contributions above W ≈ 2 GeV.

We measured the ratios of electroproduction cross sections from a proton target for three exclusive meson-baryon final states: AK(+), p pi(0), and n pi(+), with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. Using a simplemodel of quark hadronization, we extract q (q) over bar creation probabilities for the first time in exclusive two-body production, in which only a single q (q) over bar pair is created. We observe a sizable suppression of strange quark-antiquark pairs compared to nonstrange pairs, similar to that seen in high-energy production.

Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction (ep→e′p′π0) was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections d4σ/dtdQ2dxBdϕπ and structure functions σT+εσL,σTT, and σLT as functions of t were obtained over a wide range of Q2 and xB. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found that the inclusion of vector meson rescattering processes is necessary to bring the magnitude of the calculated and measured structure functions into rough agreement. In the handbag framework, there are two independent calculations, both of which appear to roughly explain the magnitude of the structure functions in terms of transversity generalized parton distributions.

High-statistics measurements of differential cross sections and spin density matrix elements for the reaction gamma p -> phi p have been made using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. We cover center-of-mass energies (v s) from 1.97 to 2.84 GeV, with an extensive coverage in the phi production angle. The high statistics of the data sample made it necessary to carefully account for the interplay between the f natural lineshape and effects of the detector resolution, that are found to be comparable in magnitude. We study both the charged-(phi -> K+ K-) and neutral( phi ->(KsKL0)-K-0) K (K) over bar decay modes of the phi Further, for the charged mode, we differentiate between the cases where the final K-track is directly detected or its momentum reconstructed as the total missing momentum in the event. The two charged-mode topologies and the neutral-mode have different resolutions and are calibrated against each other. Extensive usage is made of kinematic fitting to improve the reconstructed f mass resolution. Our final results are reported in 10- and mostly 30-MeV-wide root s bins for the charged-and the neutral-modes, respectively. Possible effects from K+Lambda* channels with pK (K) over bar final states are discussed. These present results constitute the most precise and extensive phi photoproduction measurements to date and in conjunction with the omega photoproduction results recently published by CLAS, will greatly improve our understanding of low energy vector meson photoproduction.

The high statistics of the data sample made it necessary to carefully account for the interplay between the $\phi$ natural lineshape and effects of the detector resolution, that are found to be comparable in magnitude. We study both the charged- ($\phi \to K^+ K^-$) and neutral- ($\phi \to K^0_S K^0_L$) $K\overline{K}$ decay modes of the $\phi$. Further, for the charged mode, we differentiate between the cases where the final $K^-$ track is directly detected or its momentum reconstructed as the total missing momentum in the event. The two charged-mode topologies and the neutral-mode have different resolutions and are calibrated against each other. Extensive usage is made of kinematic fitting to improve the reconstructed $\phi$ mass resolution. Our final results are reported in 10- and mostly 30-MeV-wide $\sqrt{s}$ bins for the charged- and the neutral-mode, respectively. Possible effects from $K^+ \Lambda^\ast$ channels with $p K\overline{K}$ final-states are discussed. These present results constitute the most precise and extensive $\phi$ photoproduction measurements to date and in conjunction with the $\omega$ photoproduction results recently published by CLAS, will greatly improve our understanding of low energy vector meson photoproduction., Comment: 38 pages, 36 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1006.0374

PION ELECTROPRODUCTION - Abstract
Exclusive pi(0) electroproduction at a beam energy of 5.75 GeV has been measured with the Jefferson Lab CLAS spectrometer. Differential cross sections were measured at more than 1800 kinematic values in Q(2), x(B), t, and phi(pi), in the Q(2) range from 1.0 to 4.6 GeV2, -t up to 2 GeV2, and x(B) from 0.1 to 0.58. Structure functions sigma(T) + epsilon sigma(L), sigma(TT), and sigma(LT) were extracted as functions of t for each of 17 combinations of Q(2) and x(B). The data were compared directly with two handbag-based calculations including both longitudinal and transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Inclusion of only longitudinal GPDs very strongly underestimates sigma(T) + epsilon sigma(L) and fails to account for sigma(TT) and sigma(LT), while inclusion of transversity GPDs brings the calculations into substantially better agreement with the data. There is very strong sensitivity to the relative contributions of nucleon helicity-flip and helicity nonflip processes. The results confirm that exclusive pi(0) electroproduction offers direct experimental access to the transversity GPDs.

We have measured the nuclear transparency of the incoherent diffractive $A(e,e'\rho^0)$ process in $^{12}$C and $^{56}$Fe targets relative to $^2$H using a 5 GeV electron beam. The nuclear transparency, the ratio of the produced $\rho^0$'s on a nucleus relative to deuterium, which is sensitive to $\rho A$ interaction, was studied as function of the coherence length ($l_c$), a lifetime of the hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon, and the four-momentum transfer squared ($Q^2$). While the transparency for both $^{12}$C and $^{56}$Fe showed no $l_c$ dependence, a significant $Q^2$ dependence was measured, which is consistent with calculations that included the color transparency effects., Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures

Cardioprotection by preconditioning is a central issue of current research on heart function. Several reports indicate that preventing the assembly and opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) protects the heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury. We have previously reported that brief episodes of tachycardia decrease the infarct size produced by subsequent prolonged occlusion of a coronary artery, indicating that controlled tachycardia is an effective preconditioning manoeuvre. The effects of preconditioning tachycardia on mPTP activity have not been reported. Therefore, in this work we investigated if preconditioning tachycardia protects against calcium-induced mitochondrial swelling, a measure of mPTP activity. We found that tachycardia decreased by 2.5-fold the rate of mitochondrial calcium-induced swelling, a factor that presumably contributes to the cardioprotective effects of tachycardia. The oxidative status of the cell increased after tachycardia, as evidenced by the decrease in the cellular and mitochondrial GSH/GSSG ratio. We also observed increased S-glutathionylation of cyclophilin-D, an essential mPTP component, after tachycardia. This reversible redox modification of cyclophilin-D may account, al least in part, for the decreased mPTP activity produced by preconditioning tachycardia.

Nuclear and High Energy Physics - Abstract
The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance are extracted for 1.7 < Q(2)< 4.5 GeV2 from recent high precision JLab-CLAS cross section and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry data for pi(+) electroproduction on protons at W=1.15-1.69 GeV. The analysis is made using two approaches, dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, which give consistent Q(2) behavior of the helicity amplitudes for the gamma(*)p -> N(1440)P-11 transition. It is found that the transverse helicity amplitude A(1/2), which is large and negative at Q(2)=0, becomes large and positive at Q(2)similar or equal to 2 GeV2, and then drops slowly with Q(2). The longitudinal helicity amplitude S-1/2, which was previously found from CLAS ep -> ep pi(0),en pi(+) data to be large and positive at Q(2)=0.4,0.65 GeV2, drops with Q(2). Available model predictions for gamma(*)p -> N(1440)P-11 allow us to conclude that these results provide strong evidence in favor of N(1440)P-11 as a first radial excitation of the 3q ground state. The results of the present paper also confirm the conclusion of our previous analysis for Q(2)< 1 GeV2 that the presentation of N(1440)P-11 as a q(3)G hybrid state is ruled out.

The beam spin asymmetry (BSA) in the exclusive reaction ep -> ep pi(0) was measured with the CEBAF 5.77 GeV polarized electron beam and Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The x(B),Q(2),t, and phi dependences of the pi(0) BSA are presented in the deep inelastic regime. The asymmetries are fitted with a sin phi function and their amplitudes are extracted. Overall, they are of the order of 0.04-0.11 and roughly independent of t. This is the signature of a nonzero longitudinal-transverse interference. The implications concerning the applicability of a formalism based on generalized parton distributions, as well as the extension of a Regge formalism at high photon virtualities, are discussed.

50. Electroproduction of $\phi(1020)$ mesons at $1.4\leq Q^2\leq$ GeV$^2$ measured with the CLAS spectrometer

Electroproduction of exclusive $\phi$ vector mesons has been studied with the CLAS detector in the kinematical range $1.4\leq Q^2\leq 3.8$ GeV$^{2}$, $0.0\leq t^{\prime}\leq 3.6$ GeV$^{2}$, and $2.0\leq W\leq 3.0$ GeV. The scaling exponent for the total cross section as $1/(Q^2+M_{\phi}^2)^n$ was determined to be $n=2.49\pm 0.33$. The slope of the four-momentum transfer $t'$ distribution is $b_{\phi}=0.98 \pm 0.17$ GeV$^{-2}$. Under the assumption of s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC), we determine the ratio of longitudinal to transverse cross sections to be $R=0.86 \pm 0.24$.
