Abstract

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA ("European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications") is preparing a conceptual design report of a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. EuPRAXIA started in November 2015 and will deliver the design report in October 2019. EuPRAXIA aims to be included on the ESFRI roadmap in 2020. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

http://accelconf.web.cern.ch/AccelConf/FEL2013/papers/wepso05.pdf; International audience; LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation) aims at investigating the production of short, intense, and coherent pulses in the soft X-ray region. A 400 MeV superconducting linear accelerator and a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA), will feed a single Free Electron Laser line with High order Harmonic in Gas and Echo Enable Harmonic Generation seeding. After the Conceptual Design Report (CDR), R&D has been launched on specific magnetic elements (cryo-ready 3 m long in-vacuum undulator, a variable strong permanent magnet quadrupoles), on diagnostics (Smith-Purcell, electro-optics). In recent transport studies of a LWFA based on more realistic beam parameters (1 % energy spread, 1 μm beam size and 1 mrad divergence) than the ones assumed in the CDR, a longitudinal and transverse manipulation enables to provide theoretical amplification. A test experiment is under preparation. It is noted in this context that among the French scientific community's interest in experiments at operating FELs is increasing.

International audience; After having reached the status of user facilities in the infrared, Free Electron Laser (FEL) oscillators are becoming interesting light sources for scientific research also in the UV/VUV wavelength region. Thanks to continuous advances in accelerator and mirror technology, it has been possible to reach with tunability energies which are hardly accessible with conventional lasers (the European FEL project at Elettra recently lased below 190 nm), with the realistic perspective of reaching even shorter wavelengths in the near future. Thanks to their unique properties, such as tunability, full coherence, high intensity, spectral and temporal stability, they offer new opportunities for many kinds of spectroscopy: in particular, storage ring FELs are ideal sources for pump–probe experiments in conjunction with synchrotron radiation, as demonstrated by a series of studies of the nonequilibrium space charge distribution at photoexcited Si surfaces and interfaces performed at SuperACO. Besides, especially when operated at shorter wavelengths, FEL oscillators are very attractive also for one-photon experiments requiring high power and full tunability. We describe here the properties of the sources, and provide an overview of the experiments that have been performed and that are planned to exploit the new opportunities they offer.

Abstract

International audience; The Super-ACO storage ring FEL, covering the UV range down to 300 nm with a high average power (300 mW at 350 nm) together with a high stability and long lifetime, is a unique tool for the performance of users applications. We present here the first pump-probe two color experiments on biological species using a storage ring FEL coupled to the synchrotron radiation. The intense UV pulse of the Super-ACO FEL is used to prepare a high initial concentration of chromophores in their first singlet electronic excited state. The nearby bending magnet synchrotron radiation provides, on the other hand a pulsed, white light continuum (UV–IR), naturally synchronized with the FEL pulses and used to probe the photochemical subsequent events and the associated transient species. We have demonstrated the feasibility with a dye molecule (POPOP) observing a two-color effect, signature of excited state absorption and a temporal signature with Acridine. Applications on various chromophores of biological interest are carried out, such as the time-resolved absorption study of the first excited state of Acridine.

Abstract

L'interaction des rayonnements UV avec l'ADN est à l'origine de processus pouvant induire des mutations. Malgré de nombreuses études sur l'ADN et ses constituants, les étapes photo-induites primaires comme, par exemple, la relaxation non-radiative du premier état singulet excité de ces systèmes après une exposition à la lumière UV, demeurent méconnues.Afin de caractériser ces aspects fondamentaux, nous avons développé une expérience de spectroscopie laser femtoseconde de type pompe-sonde, sur la source LUCA au CEA/Saclay [1]. Le faisceau pompe est constitué par le troisième harmonique d'un laser Ti:Sa (Λ = 266 nm) tandis que le faisceau sonde est produit par le deuxième harmonique de la voie colorant du LUCA (Λ = 320 nm). Ces longueurs d'onde ont été choisies car elles correspondent aux maxima d'absorption et de fluorescence des bases de l'ADN. L'énergie de la pompe est typiquement de 15 µJ et celle de la sonde de quelques nJ avec des largeurs à mi-hauteurs d'environ 120 fs. Pendant l'expérience, la solution circule dans une cellule optique en silice de trajet optique 1 mm, qui elle-même, effectue un mouvement perpendiculaire au trajet optique.Nous rapportons dans cette communication les premiers résultats portant sur la cytosine.

Abstract

ARC-EN-CIEL (Accelerator-Radiation Complex for Enhanced Coherent Intense Extended Light) proposal is based on a CW 1 GeV superconducting linear accelerator delivering high charge, subpicosecond, low emittance electron bunches with a high repetition rate (1 kHz). The FEL uses High Harmonics Generation in gases in a High Gain Harmonic Generation scheme, leading to a rather compact solution. The radiation extends down to 0.8 nm with the non-linear harmonics and reproduces the good longitudinal and transverse coherence of the harmonics generated in gas. Optional beam loops, foreseen to increase the beam current or the energy, will accommodate infrared CSR source, femtosecond undulator sources in the VUV and X-ray ranges, and a FEL oscillator in the 10 nm range.
