In this paper, a field study is carried out to monitor the natural frequencies of Malahide viaduct bridge which is located in the north of Dublin. The bridge includes a series of simply supported spans, two of which collapsed in 2009 and were replaced. The replaced spans are stiffer than most of the others and these differences resulted in higher natural frequencies. An indirect bridge monitoring approach is employed in which acceleration responses from an instrumented train are used to estimate the natural frequencies of each span of the viaduct showing the locations of the two replaced spans with higher stiffness. For the indirect approach, an Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD)-based Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) technique is employed to identify the natural frequency of each span. This is carried out by analysing the Instantaneous Frequencies (IFs) from the calculated intrinsic mode functions. The average of the IFs calculated using 41 runs of the instrumented train (with varying carriage mass and speed for each run) are used to estimate the natural frequencies. To assess the feasibility of the indirect approach, a bespoke set of direct measurements was taken using accelerometers attached successively on each span of the viaduct. The free and forced vibrations from each span are used to estimate the first natural frequencies. The frequencies obtained from drive-by measurements are compared to those from direct measurements which confirms the effectiveness of indirect approaches. In addition, the instantaneous amplitudes of the drive-by signals are used to indicate the location of the stiffer spans. Seismic response prediction is a challenging problem and is significant in every stage during a structure's life cycle. Deep neural network has proven to be an efficient tool in the response prediction of structures. However, a conventional neural network with deterministic parameters is unable to predict the random dynamic response of structures. In this paper, a deep Bayesian convolutional neural network is proposed to predict seismic response. The Bayes-backpropagation algorithm is applied to train the proposed Bayesian deep learning model. A numerical example of a three-dimensional building structure is utilized to validate the performance of the proposed model. The result shows that both acceleration and displacement responses can be predicted with a high level of accuracy by using the proposed method. The main statistical indices of prediction results agree closely with the results from finite element analysis. A critical problem encountered in structural health monitoring of civil engineering structures, and other structures such as mechanical or aircraft structures, is how to convincingly analyze the nonstationary data that is coming online, how to reduce the high-dimensional features, and how to extract informative features associated with damage to infer structural conditions. Wavelet transform among other techniques has proven to be an effective technique for processing and analyzing nonstationary data due to its unique characteristics. However, the biggest challenge frequently encountered in assuring the effectiveness of wavelet transform in analyzing massive nonstationary data from civil engineering structures, and in structural health diagnosis, is how to select the right wavelet. The question of which wavelet function is appropriate for processing and analyzing the nonstationary data in civil engineering structures has not been clearly addressed, and no clear guidelines or rules have been reported in the literature to show how the right wavelet is chosen. Therefore, this study aims to address an important question in this regard by proposing a new framework for choosing a proper wavelet that can be customized for massive nonstationary data analysis, disturbances separation, and extraction of informative features associated with damage. The proposed method takes into account data type, data and wavelet characteristics, similarity, sharing information, and data recovery accuracy. The novelty of this study lies in integrating multi-criteria which are associated directly with features that correlated well with change in structures due to damage, including common criteria such as energy, entropy, linear correlation index, and variance. Also, it introduces and considers new proposed measures, such as wavelet-based nonlinear correlation such as cosh spectral distance and mutual information, wavelet-based energy fluctuation, measures-based recovery accuracy, such as sensitive feature extraction, noise reduction, and others to evaluate various base wavelets' function capabilities for appropriate decomposition and reconstruction of structural dynamic responses. The proposed method is verified by experimental and simulated data. The results revealed that the proposed method has a satisfactory performance for base wavelet selection and the small order of Daubechies and Symlet provide the best results, especially order 3. Damage detection of civil and mechanical structures based on measured modal parameters using model updating schemes has received increasing attention in recent years. In this study, for uncertainty-oriented damage identification, a non-probabilistic structural damage identification (NSDI) technique based on an optimization algorithm and interval mathematics is proposed. In order to take into account the uncertainty quantification, the elastic modulus is described as unknown-but-bounded interval values and the proposed new scheme determines the upper and lower bounds of the damage index. In this method, the interval bounds can provide supports for structural health diagnosis under uncertain conditions by considering the uncertainties in the variables of optimization algorithm. The model updating scheme is subsequently used to predict the interval-bound of the Elemental Stiffness Parameter (ESP). The slime mold algorithm (SMA) is used as the main algorithm for model updating. In addition, in this study, an enhanced variant of SMA (ESMA) is developed, which removes unchanged variables after a defined number of iterations. The method is implemented on three well-known numerical examples in the domain of structural health monitoring under single damage and multi-damage scenarios with different degrees of uncertainty. The results show that the proposed NSDI methodology has reduced computation time, by at least 30%, in comparison with the probabilistic methods. Magnetorheological elastomeric (MRE) material is a novel type of material that can adaptively change the rheological property rapidly, continuously, and reversibly when subjected to real-time external magnetic field. These new type of MRE materials can be developed by employing various schemes, for instance by mixing carbon nanotubes or acetone contents during the curing process which produces functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In order to study the mechanical and magnetic effects of this material, for potential application in seismic isolation, in this paper, different mathematical models of magnetorheological elastomers are analyzed and modified based on the reported studies on traditional magnetorheological elastomer. In this regard, a new feature identification method, via utilizing curvelet analysis, is proposed to make a multi-scale constituent analysis and subsequently a comparison between magnetorheological elastomer nanocomposite and traditional magnetorheological elastomers in a microscopic level. Furthermore, by using this "smart" material as the laminated core structure of an adaptive base isolation system, magnetic circuit analysis is numerically conducted for both complete and incomplete designs. Magnetic distribution of different laminated magnetorheological layers is discussed when the isolator is under compressive preloading and lateral shear loading. For a proof of concept study, a scaled building structure is established with the proposed isolation device. The dynamic performance of this isolated structure is analyzed by using a newly developed reaching law sliding mode control and Radial Basis Function (RBF) adaptive sliding mode control schemes. Transmissibility of the structural system is evaluated to assess its adaptability, controllability and nonlinearity. As the findings in this study show, it is promising that the structure can achieve its optimal and adaptive performance by designing an isolator with this adaptive material whose magnetic and mechanical properties are functionally enhanced as compared with traditional isolation devices. Hysteresis is a nonlinear phenomenon observed in the dynamic response behavior of numerous structural systems under high intensity cyclic or random loading, as well as in numerous mechanical and electromagnetic systems. For several decades, hysteretic response analysis of structural systems has been widely studied and numerous hysteresis models have been proposed and utilized in order to reproduce and better understand the complex hysteretically degrading behavior of structural systems. An important area of research in this regard has been the parameter identification of hysteretic systems. In this paper, we propose a modified Prandtl–Ishlinskii model to simulate the asymmetric hysteresis, which is the complex behavior in structural systems. In addition, a new approach based on particle swarm optimization and least-mean square algorithm is utilized for parameter identification of this hysteresis model. Summary: Although the effectiveness of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for analyzing time‐varying measurements has been studied for mechanical and civil engineering applications, a few fundamental questions still need to be answered, such as how to choose an optimal decomposition level (DL) for a specific task. Selection of the optimal DL still remains a question that has not been adequately explored and not thoroughly investigated. Vast majority of wavelet based methods in mechanical and civil engineering applications have been associated with nonstationary measurements and do not offer detail information on how DL should be selected or linked to useful features that can identify anomalies in a structure. This study proposes a new detailed framework for choosing the optimal DL to guarantee an effective wavelet analysis for time‐varying structural responses. The approach proposed in this paper uses various wavelets and theoretical levels to decompose the signal and to identify those aspects that interact to affect the DL, such as data characteristics, frequency band features, noise reduction, similarity, sharing information, and reconstruction quality. To show the effectiveness of our proposed method, we considered a comparative study using various mother wavelets on El Centro earthquake and acceleration responses from shaking table results of physical experiment. Experimental results show that the optimal DL for El Centro earthquake is 4 and for the acceleration data is 6. Automatic crack identification for pipeline analysis utilizes three-dimensional (3D) image technology to improve the accuracy and reliability of crack identification. A new technique that integrates a deep learning algorithm and 3D shadow modeling (3D-SM) is proposed for the automatic identification of corrosion cracks in pipelines. Since the depth of a corrosion crack is below the surrounding area of the crack, a shadow of the crack is projected when the crack is exposed under light sources. In this study, we analyze the shadow areas of cracks through 3D shadow modeling (3D-SM) and identify the evolving cracks through the shape analysis of the shadows. To denoise the 3D images, the connected domain analysis is implemented so that the shadow groups of the evolving cracks can be retained and the scattered shadow groups that occur due to insignificant defects can be eliminated. Moreover, a novel deep neural network is developed to process the 3D images. The proposed automatic crack identification method successfully processes the 3D images efficiently and accurately diagnoses the corrosion cracks. Featured Application: The proposed novel approach, presented in this paper, can effectively interpret complex sensor data collected for structural health monitoring and offers a reliable scheme for damage detection of structural systems. Recent advancements in sensor technology have resulted in the collection of massive amounts of measured data from the structures that are being monitored. However, these data include inherent measurement errors that often cause the assessment of quantitative damage to be ill-conditioned. Attempts to incorporate a probabilistic method into a model have provided promising solutions to this problem by considering the uncertainties as random variables, mostly modeled with Gaussian probability distribution. However, the success of probabilistic methods is limited due the lack of adequate information required to obtain an unbiased probabilistic distribution of uncertainties. Moreover, the probabilistic surrogate models involve complicated and expensive computations, especially when generating output data. In this study, a non-probabilistic surrogate model based on wavelet weighted least squares support vector machine (WWLS-SVM) is proposed to address the problem of uncertainty in vibration-based damage detection. The input data for WWLS-SVM consists of selected wavelet packet decomposition (WPD) features of the structural response signals, and the output is the Young's modulus of structural elements. This method calculates the changes in the lower and upper boundaries of Young's modulus based on an interval analysis method. Considering the uncertainties in the input parameters, the surrogate model is used to predict this interval-bound output. The proposed approach is applied to detect simulated damage in the four-story benchmark structure of the IASC-ASCE SHM group. The results show that the performance of the proposed method is superior to that of the direct finite element model in the uncertainty-based damage detection of structures and requires less computational effort. Featured Application: The proposed novel approach presented in this paper offers a highly effective and reliable scheme for damage detection and safety assessment of pipeline systems and can be incorporated as a practical and highly reliable structural health monitoring approach for the safe operationty of existing and new pipeline systems. Modal macro strain-based damage identification is a promising approach since it has the advantages of high sensitivity and effectiveness over other related methods. In this paper, a basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) pipeline system is used for analysis by using long-gauge distributed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. Dynamic macro strain responses are extracted to form modal macro strain (MMS) vectors. Both longitudinal distribution and circumferential distribution plots of MMS are compared and analyzed. Results show these plots can reflect damage information of the pipeline based on the previous work carried out by the authors. However, these plots may not be good choices for accurate detection of damage information since the model is 3D and has different flexural and torsional effects. Therefore, by extracting MMS information in the circumferential distribution plots, a novel deep neural network is employed to train and test these images, which reflect the important and key information of modal variance in the pipe system. Results show that the proposed Deep Learning based approach is a promising way to inherently identify damage types, location of the excitation load and support locations, especially when the structural types are complicated and the ambient environment is changing. detection, the structural response is evaluated using properly trained surrogate model. Furthermore, in practice uncertainties in the FE model parameters and modelling errors are inevitable. Flence, an efficient approach based on Monte Carlo simulation is proposed to take into account the effect of uncertainties in developing a surrogate model. The probability of damage existence (PDE) is calculated based on the probability density function of the existence of undamaged and damaged states. The current work builds a framework for Probability Based Damage Detection (PBDD) of structures based on the best combination of metaheuristic optimization algorithm and surrogate models. To reach this goal, three popular metamodeling techniques including Cascade Feed Forward Neural Network (CFNN), Least Square Support Vector Machines (LS-SVMs) and Kriging are constructed, trained and tested in order to inspect features and faults of each algorithm. Furthermore, three wellknown optimization algorithms including Ideal Gas Molecular Movement (IGMM), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bat Algorithm (BA) are utilized and the comparative results are presented accordingly. Furthermore, efficient schemes are implemented on these algorithms to improve their performance in handling problems with a large number of variables. By considering various indices for measuring the accuracy and computational time of PBDD process, the results indicate that combination of LS-SVM surrogate model by IGMM optimization algorithm have better performance in predicting the of damage compared with other methods. Health assessment and monitoring of engineered systems have become one of the fastest growing multi-disciplinary research areas over the last two decades. One of the largest concerns in structural health monitoring is how to infer structural conditions from the measurements and the data collected by sensors. The ultimate aim is to detect the structural damages with a high level of certainty and hence to extend the life of structures. In this study, a new strategy for structural damage detection is proposed using least square support vector machines based on a new combinational kernel. Thin plate spline Littlewood–Paley wavelet kernel function introduced in this article is a novel combinational kernel function, which combines thin plate spline radial basis function kernel with local characteristics and a modified Littlewood–Paley wavelet kernel function with global characteristics. During the process of structural damage detection, a social harmony search algorithm optimizes the parameters of least square support vector machine and the thin plate spline Littlewood–Paley wavelet kernel. The results obtained by this method are compared with least square support vector machine based on the other combinational and conventional kernels. These results show that the accuracy of damage detection based on least square support vector machine with thin plate spline Littlewood–Paley wavelet kernel is higher than other methods that utilize conventional kernels under similar conditions. In comparison with other combinational kernels, least square support vector machine with thin plate spline Littlewood–Paley wavelet kernel possesses a better dissemination and learning ability by incorporating the advantages of radial basis function kernel and wavelet kernel functions.
