This article reports the results of an analysis of five Big Deal electronic journal packages to which Hofstra University's Axinn Library subscribes. COUNTER usage reports were used to judge the value of each Big Deal. Limitations of usage statistics are also discussed. In the end, the author concludes that four of the five Big Deals are good deals for Hofstra University, offers suggestions for using usage statistics, and stresses the importance of each library making its own judgment as to the value and sustainability of Big Deal journal packages.

This study analyzes citations from The International Journal of Business Communication to reveal characteristics of the interdisciplinarity of the field of business communication and provide insight and guidance for collection development in this area. A list of most cited journals and books is provided. Subject analysis is included to determine discipline distribution, and collection development recommendations are made. A snapshot analysis is undertaken to determine what percentage of top cited journals are available with full-text at present in commonly-held subscription databases. An annotated bibliography of a selection of more cited and/or seminal books is provided, of which some may lie outside the typical expertise of business and communication librarians. Certain platform designs can inadvertently affect the quality of access to e-journals adversely. Sally Glaser, Chair of the Standing Committee on Presentation and Identification of E-Journals (PIE-J) for the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), presented how the NISO recommended practice provides guidelines on how best to avoid problems. Julie Zhu shared how Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers has been striving to incorporate the PIE-J recommendations and some of the successes or hindrances they have encountered. Heather Otrando of Cambridge University Press described how upgrades to the Cambridge Core platform created an opportunity to more fully align their presentation of e-journal content with PIE-J recommendations. Objective - As academic libraries evolve to meet the changing needs of students in the digital age, the emphasis has shifted from the physical book collection to a suite of services incorporating innovations in teaching, technology, and social media, among others. Based on trends identified by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and other sources, the authors investigated the extent to which academic libraries have adopted 21st century library trends. Methods - The authors examined the websites of 100 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries, their branches, and 160 randomly selected academic libraries to determine whether they adopted selected 21st century library trends. Results - Results indicated that ARL member libraries were significantly more likely to adopt these trends, quite possibly due to their larger size and larger budgets. Conclusion - This research can assist librarians, library directors, and other stakeholders in making the case for the adoption or avoidance of particular 21st century library trends, especially where considerable outlay of funds is necessary. The article focuses on providing protection to child informants and witnesses whose testimony or status as a witness renders them unsafe in the U.S. It mentions about views of U.S. Supreme Court in Chambers v. Mississippi addressing criminal trial process; and stories of child witnesses and informants murdered as a result of their participation in the criminal justice system.

There has been tremendous growth in the amount of digital content created by libraries, publishers, cultural institutions and the general public. While there are great benefits to having content available in digital form, digital objects can be extremely short-lived unless proper attention is paid to preservation. Reflecting on our experience with the digital preservation service Portico, we provide background on Portico's history and evolving practice of sustainable preservation of the digital artifacts of scholarly communications. We also provide an overview of the digital preservation landscape as we see it now, with some thoughts on current requirements for preservation, and thoughts on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. A follow-up to an earlier article published in this same journal in 2013, this article repeats an analysis of five Big Deal journal packages to which Hofstra University's Axinn Library subscribes. Improvements over the last study include more years of data, the removal of open access and archival content from the calculations, and a subject analysis. Results confirm the original findings that four of the Big Deals are good deals, but expand on these outcomes with a discussion of the subject breakdown of each package, the cost of individual title subscriptions, and the dangers of overreliance on usage statistics. This paper presents the results of an online survey about perpetual access for electronic serials that have been canceled, have ceased, or have transferred to different publishers. The survey sought to ascertain the true experiences of libraries working to maintain perpetual access. Results indicate a high success rate for providing perpetual access. Results also indicate a lack of standardization for and many challenges to keeping track of and providing perpetual access. In 2010, Sarah Glasser from Hofstra University developed a survey to explore the staffing implications of the migration from print serials to electronic resources. The objective of the survey was to explore the effects of the elimination or significant reduction of print serials management tasks on positions and employees. Survey results indicated that the functions of binding, claiming, and check-in had been eliminated or significantly reduced at many libraries. Most respondents were able to identify some type of reorganization as a result of reductions in traditional print serials job duties. This presentation was well attended and following the presentation a lively interaction ensued where many topics related to staff training, retraining, and development were discussed. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as important in cancer development and progression. The impact of diet on lncRNA expression is largely unknown. Sulforaphane (SFN), obtained from vegetables like broccoli, can prevent and suppress cancer formation. Here we tested the hypothesis that SFN attenuates the expression of cancer-associated lncRNAs. We analyzed whole-genome RNA-sequencing data of normal human prostate epithelial cells and prostate cancer cells treated with 15 μM SFN or dimethylsulfoxide. SFN significantly altered expression of ~100 lncRNAs in each cell type and normalized the expression of some lncRNAs that were differentially expressed in cancer cells. SFN-mediated alterations in lncRNA expression correlated with genes that regulate cell cycle, signal transduction and metabolism. LINC01116 was functionally investigated because it was overexpressed in several cancers, and was transcriptionally repressed after SFN treatment. Knockdown of LINC01116 with siRNA decreased proliferation of prostate cancer cells and significantly up-regulated several genes including GAPDH (regulates glycolysis), MAP1LC3B2 (autophagy) and H2AFY (chromatin structure). A four-fold decrease in the ability of the cancer cells to form colonies was found when the LINC01116 gene was disrupted through a CRISPR/CAS9 method, further supporting an oncogenic function for LINC01116 in PC-3 cells. We identified a novel isoform of LINC01116 and bioinformatically investigated the possibility that LINC01116 could interact with target genes via ssRNA:dsDNA triplexes. Our data reveal that chemicals from the diet can influence the expression of functionally important lncRNAs, and suggest a novel mechanism by which SFN may prevent and suppress prostate cancer. Background: Cruciferous vegetables have been associated with the chemoprevention of cancer. Epigenetic regulators have been identified as important targets for prostate cancer chemoprevention. Treatment of human prostate cancer cells with sulforaphane (SFN), a chemical from broccoli and broccoli sprouts, inhibits epigenetic regulators such as histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes, but it is not known whether consumption of a diet high in broccoli sprouts impacts epigenetic mechanisms in an in vivo model of prostate cancer., Objective: In the transgenic adenocarcinoma of the mouse prostate (TRAMP) model, we tested the hypothesis that a broccoli sprout diet suppresses prostate cancer, inhibits HDAC expression, alters histone modifications, and changes the expression of genes regulated by HDACs., Methods: TRAMP mice were fed a 15% broccoli sprout or control AIN93G diet; tissue samples were collected at 12 and 28 wk of age., Results: Mice fed broccoli sprouts had detectable amounts of SFN metabolites in liver, kidney, colon, and prostate tissues. Broccoli sprouts reduced prostate cancer incidence and progression to invasive cancer by 11- and 2.4-fold at 12 and 28 wk of age, respectively. There was a significant decline in HDAC3 protein expression in the epithelial cells of prostate ventral and anterior lobes at age 12 wk. Broccoli sprout consumption also decreased histone H3 lysine 9 trimethylation in the ventral lobe (age 12 wk), and decreased histone H3 lysine 18 acetylation in all prostate lobes (age 28 wk). A decline in p16 mRNA levels, a gene regulated by HDAC3, was associated with broccoli sprout consumption, but no significant changes were noted at the protein level., Conclusions: Broccoli sprout intake was associated with a decline in prostate cancer occurrence and HDAC3 protein expression in the prostate, extending prior work that implicated loss of HDAC3/ corepressor interactions as a key preventive mechanism by SFN in vivo.
