Abstract: Polycrystalline samples of the boride series Ti9−x M2+x Ru18B8 (M=Cr, Co, Mn, Ni) including single crystals of Ti8Co3Ru18B8 have been prepared by arc-melting the elements. The phases were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (Rietveld refinement), single-crystal X-ray diffraction (for M=Co), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. They are substitutional variants of the Zn11Rh18B8 structure type, space group P4/mbm (No. 127) and contain a “scaffold” structural unit (M-ladders interacting with M/Ti-chains) as well as isolated M/Ti-chains. According to DFT calculations, the Ru–X (X=B, Ti, Ti/M) bonding interactions are nearly constant throughout the series and responsible for the structural stability of these phases, whereas the M–M and Ru–M interactions vary significantly with varying valence electron count. Furthermore, density of states (DOS) analyses predict the phases with M=Mn and Ni to develop a total magnetic moment but not the M=Co phase. Susceptibility measurements confirm the Co phase to be paramagnetic and the Mn Phase orders ferrimagnetically below 120K and thus develops a magnetic moment, as predicted. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of the new metal-rich boride V1+ xNb1- xIrB2 ( x ≈ 0.1), were synthesized by arc-melting the elements in a water-cooled copper crucible under an argon atmosphere and characterized by X-ray diffraction and EDX measurements. The crystal structure was refined on the basis of single crystal data. The new phase adopts the Mo2IrB2-type structure (space group Pnnm, no. 58) with the lattice parameters a = 7.301(7) Å, b = 9.388(9) Å and c = 3.206(5) Å. It is the first quaternary representative of Mo2IrB2-type structure. The structure contains zigzag B4-fragments with boron-boron distances of 1.83-1.85 Å. The electronic density of states and crystal orbital Hamilton population (for bonding analysis) were calculated, using the linear muffin-tin orbital atomic sphere approximation (LMTO-ASA) method. According to these calculations, this metal-rich compound should be metallic, as expected. Furthermore, very strong boron-boron interactions are observed in the zigzag B4-fragment and two significantly different Ir-B interactions are observed in the new phase and the prototype Mo2IrB2. Abstract: Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of the new complex boride Ti1+x Rh2−x+y Ir3−y B3 (x=0.68; y=1.06) were synthesized by arc-melting the elements in a water-cooled copper crucible under an argon atmosphere and characterized by X-Ray diffraction as well as EDX measurements. The crystal structure was refined on the basis of single crystal data. The new phase, which represents a new structure type containing trans zigzag B4 fragments as well as isolated boron atoms crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbam (Nr. 55) with the lattice parameters a=8.620(1)Å, b=14.995(2)Å and c=3.234(1)Å. First-principles density functional theory calculations using the Vienna ab-initio simulation package (VASP) were performed on an appropriate structural model (using a supercell approach) and the experimental crystallographic data could be reproduced accurately. Based on this model, the density of states and crystal orbital Hamilton population (for bonding analysis) were calculated, using the linear muffin-tin orbital atomic sphere approximation (LMTO-ASA) method. According to these calculations, this metal-rich compound should be metallic, as expected. Furthermore, very strong boron–boron interactions are observed in the trans zigzag B4 fragment, which induce a clear differentiation of two types of metal–boron contacts with different strength. Transition-metal borides show not only promising physical properties but also a rich variety of crystal structures. In this context, quantum-chemical tools can shed light on important facets of the chemistry within such intermetallic borides. Using density-functional theory (DFT), we analyze in detail two phases of significant structural-chemical importance: the recently synthesized Ti1+xOs2-xRuB2 and the isotypical Ti1+xOs3-xB2. Starting from the observation of different Ti/Os occupations in X-ray crystal structure analysis, we assess suitable computational models and rationalize how the interplay of Ti-Ti, Ti-Os, and Os-Os bonds drives the site preferences. Then, we move on to a systematic investigation of the metal-boron bonds which embed the characteristic, trigonal-planar B4 units within their metallic surroundings. Remarkably, the different Ti-B bonds in Ti1+xOs2-xRuB2 (and also in its ternary derivative) are of vastly different strength, and the strength of these bonds does not correlate with their length. The tools presented in this work are based on simple and insightful chemical arguments together with DFT, and may subsequently be transferred to other intermetallic phases-transition-metal borides and beyond. Single-phase polycrystalline samples and single crystals of the complex boride phases Ti8Fe3Ru18B8 and Ti7Fe4Ru18B8 have been synthesized by arc melting the elements. The phases were characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction as well as energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. They are new substitutional variants of the Zn11Rh18B8 structure type, space group P4/mbm (no. 127). The particularity of their crystal structure lies in the simultaneous presence of dumbbells which form ladders of magnetically active iron atoms along the [001] direction and two additional mixed iron/titanium chains occupying Wyckoff sites 4h and 2b. The ladder substructure is ca. 3.0 Å from the two chains at the 4h, which creates the sequence chain-ladder-chain, establishing a new structural and magnetic motif, the scaffold. The other chain (at 2b) is separated by at least 6.5 Å from this scaffold. According to magnetization measurements, Ti8Fe3Ru18B8 and Ti7Fe4Ru18B8 order ferrimagnetically below 210 and 220 K, respectively, with the latter having much higher magnetic moments than the former. However, the magnetic moment observed for Ti8Fe3Ru18B8 is unexpectedly smaller than the recently reported Ti9Fe2Ru18B8 ferromagnet. The variation of the magnetic moments observed in these new phases can be adequately understood by assuming a ferrimagnetic ordering involving the three different iron sites. Furthermore, the recorded hysteresis loops indicate a semihard magnetic behavior for the two phases. The highest Hc value (28.6 kA/m), measured for Ti7Fe4Ru18B8, lies just at the border of those of hard magnetic materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electronic structures of "Ti9-nFe2+nRu18B8" (n= 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3); in connection to the recently synthesized Ti9-nFe2+n-RU18B8(n = 1, 2), have been investigated and analyzed using LSDA tight-binding calculations to elucidate the distribution of Fe and Ti, to determine the maximum Fe content, and to explore possible magnetic structures to interpret experimental magnetization results. Tbrough a combination of calculations on specific models and using tbe rigid band approximation, which is validated by the DOS curves for "T9-nFe2+nRu18B8" (n = 0, 0.5, 1, 2,3), mixing of Fe and Ti is anticipated at both tbe 2b- and 4h-chain sites. The model "Ti8.5Fe2.5Ru18B8" (n = 0.5) revealed that both Brewer-type Ti-Ru interactions as well as ligand field splitting ofthe Fe 3d orbitals regulated the observed valence electron counts between 220 and 228 electrons/formula unit. Finally, models of magnetic structures were created using "Ti6Fe5Ru18B8" (n = 3). A rigid band analysis of tbe LSDA DOS curves concluded preferred ferromagnetic ordering at low Fe content (n ⩽ 0.75) and ferrimagnetic ordering at higher Fe content (n > 0.75). Ferrimagnetism arises from antiferromagnetic exchange coupling in the scaffold of Fel-ladder and 4h-chain sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
