Background: Staphylococcus aureus is able to invade mammalian cells during infection and was recently observed inside nasal mucosa of healthy carriers.Objectives: To determine the intracellular activity of antimicrobial compounds used for decolonization procedures using a cell model mimicking S. aureus nasal epithelium invasion.Patients and methods: HaCaT cells and human nasal epithelial cells (HNECs) recovered from nasal swabs of S. aureus carriers were visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy to detect intracellular S. aureus cells. An HaCaT cell model, mimicking S. aureus internalization observed ex vivo in HNECs, was used to assess the intracellular activity against S. aureus of 21 antimicrobial compounds used for nasal decolonization, including mupirocin and chlorhexidine.Results: HaCaT cells and HNECs were found to internalize S. aureus with the same focal pattern. Most antimicrobial compounds tested on HaCaT cells were shown to have weak activity against intracellular S. aureus. Some systemic antimicrobials, including fusidic acid, clindamycin, linezolid, minocycline, ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, rifampicin and levofloxacin, reduced S. aureus intracellular loads by 0.43-1.66 log cfu/106 cells compared with the control (P < 0.001). By contrast, mupirocin and chlorhexidine reduced the S. aureus intracellular load by 0.19 and 0.23 log cfu/106 cells, respectively.Conclusions: These data indicate that most of the antimicrobial compounds used for nasal decolonization, including mupirocin and chlorhexidine, exhibit weak activity against intracellular S. aureus using the HaCaT cell model. The spread in Europe of a single multiresistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa serotype O12 has been suggested. This bacterium was responsible for a nosocomial outbreak in our hospital in 1988-1989. Three different epidemiological methods were used to analyze 30 strains isolated during five consecutive years. Protein profile analysis and chromosomal DNA fingerprinting with four different enzymes revealed closely related patterns. rRNA gene restriction fragment length analysis performed with a digoxigenin-labelled probe showed identical hybridization patterns with four to six bands according to the endonuclease used. Combination of the three typing methods showed genotypic homogeneity of these Pseudomonas aeruginosa O12 strains, despite a relative increase in their antibiotic resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Serum specimens from 66 HIV- 1-infected subjects were tested by ELISA for the presence of IgA antibodies to HIV-l: 44 samples were found positive and 37 were confirmed by immunoblot. In these subjects, the presence of anti-HIV IgA antibodies was studied in relation to the total count of circulating CD4+ lymphocytes and to the level of serum IgA. A significative correlation (P < 0.03) was found between the absence of IgA to the subunit p68 of the reverse transcriptase and a count of CD4+ cell <400/mm³ or total IgA level over 4.25 g/l. The same pattern was observed for the IgA antibodies to the p52 subunit but the association was just not significant (P < 0.07). No significant decrease was noted for the IgA directed towards the other proteins of HIV- 1, especially the products of the gag gene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) strains isolated from 68 haemodialysis Tunisian patients exhibiting chronic infection were genotyped targeting the NS5b region of the HCV genome using a prototype assay developed by Bayer HealthCare-Diagnostics (TRUGENE NS5b HCV). The overall results were compared to those obtained with another assay of the same company based on sequencing of the 5′ non-coding region (TRUGENE HCV 5′NC genotyping kit). All strains could be typed by the 5′NC typing kit, but only 62 (91; 2%) by the NS5b prototype assay. All the 62 strains typed by both methods exhibited the same pattern at the type level: 57 were type 1, 3 were type 2, and 2 were type 4. At the subtype level, eight strains that gave undetermined results by the 5′NC kit were successfully typed by the NS5b kit; eight additional strains exhibited discrepant results. The overall agreement between the two assays was 74.2% at the subtype level. In conclusion, the NS5b region appears to be much more accurate than the 5′NC region to subtype HCV strains, especially in those isolated from patients attending haemodialysis centres where the subtype distribution suggests frequent nosocomial transmissions. The aim of this study was to quantify the number of non-airborne bacteria that can passively penetrate the layers of four mask types (surgical mask, community face mask type 1 (CFM1), biocidal CFM1 and CFM2) and to determine the influence of wearing conditions for the surgical type. A mask wearer simulator consisting of a 3D anatomical replica of the upper airway connected to a breathing pump was used. Wearing time, filtration quality of the mask, fit (loose vs. tight) and breathing parameters (tidal volume, respiratory rate) were tested. A Staphylococcus epidermidis inoculum was applied to the inner layer. After the wearing simulation, the layers were separated and the bacteria counted. After four hours, no or only a few bacteria were present in the middle and outer layers. Most remained in the inner layer. Surgical mask and CFM1 retained more bacteria and provided a breeding ground for germs. The biocidal CFM1 rapidly reduced the number in the inner layer. The breathing parameters had no influence, in contrast to fit and wearing time. These results confirm that the standard test for bacterial filtration efficiency, which includes the active penetration of airborne bacteria into aerosol droplets, is the most objective measure of the ability of bacteria to penetrate through the mask layers, as the passive penetration ability of non-airborne bacteria is insignificant., (© 2024. No consensus exists about the techniques to use for microbiological diagnosis of bone and joint infections (BJIs). The objective herein was to define an algorithm to optimize BJI diagnosis in adults using various bacteriological methods on synovial fluid samples. This prospective multi-center study included 423 synovial fluids collected from adult patients with suspected BJIs. Culture (using five solid media, an enrichment broth, and blood culture bottles), universal 16S rRNA PCR followed by Sanger sequencing, and seven specific bacterial PCRs were systematically performed. Combinations of methods were compared to arrive at the optimized algorithm. Among 423 synovial fluids, 242 infections were diagnosed (57.2 %): 213 mono- and 29 poly-microbial for a total of 284 bacteria (staphylococci at 54.6 %, streptococci-enterococci at 16.5 %, Gram-negative bacilli at 15.5 %, anaerobic species at 8.8 %). Comparing culture techniques, blood culture bottles had the highest sensitivity (67.6 % for pediatric and 63.9 % for anaerobic bottles) but are not sufficient alone and require being combined with solid media. The 16S rDNA PCR detected only 52.3 % of the bacteria, whereas specific PCRs had a higher sensitivity ( Staphylococcus spp. at 66.2 %, S. aureus at 85.2 %, Streptococcus spp. at 91.2 %). Based on these results, an algorithm was proposed associating three solid media; inoculation into blood culture bottles; and 16S, Staphylococcus spp., and Streptococcus spp. PCRs, which would have detected 90.5 % of bacteria in the present cohort versus 79.2 % using all culture techniques on synovial fluid. Screening patients for S. aureus nasal carriage has proved effective in preventing cross-contamination and endogenous infection with this bacterium. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of the BD MAX StaphSR assay with liquid Amies elution swabs, taken during routine care of intensive care unit patients. Direct and pre-enriched cultures were used as reference methods to screen for S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Discrepant results between the BD MAX StaphSR assay and cultures were resolved by using the Xpert SA Nasal Complete assay. A total of 607 nasal swabs taken from 409 patients were included in this study. Compared to culture methods, the sensitivity and specificity of the BD MAX StaphSR assay were 92.5% and 91.7% for S. aureus screening, and 94.7% and 98.3% for MRSA screening, respectively. In 52 (8.6%) specimens, there was a discrepancy between the results of cultures and the BD MAX StaphSR assay, including 13 (25%) where the results of the BD MAX StaphSR assay were confirmed by the Xpert SA Nasal Complete test. This prospective study showed that the BD MAX StaphSR assay is reliable for S. aureus and MRSA detection from nasal samples taken with liquid Amies elution swabs.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major pathogen in humans. The nasal vestibule is considered as the main reservoir of S. aureus. However, even though the nasal cavity may also be colonized by S. aureus, the relationships between the two sites are still unclear. We conducted a prospective study in humans to assess the S. aureus colonization profiles in the vestibule and nasal cavity, and to investigate the presence of intracellular S. aureus in the two sites. Patients undergoing ear, nose, and throat surgery were swabbed during endoscopy to determine S. aureus nasal load, genotype, and presence of intracellular S. aureus. Among per-operative samples from 90 patients, the prevalence of S. aureus carriage was 32.2% and 33.3% in the vestibule and the nasal cavity, respectively. The mean S. aureus load was 4.10 and 4.25 log 10 CFU/swab for the nasal vestibule and nasal cavity, respectively (P > 0.05). Genotyping of S. aureus revealed that all nasal strains isolated from a given individual belong to the same clonal complex and spa-type. An intracellular carriage was observed in 5.6% of the patients, all of whom exhibited a S. aureus vestibule load higher than 3 log 10 CFU/swab. An intracellular niche was observed in the vestibule as well as in the nasal cavity. In conclusion, the nasal cavity was also found to be a major site of S. aureus carriage in humans and should draw attention when studying host-pathogen interactions related to the risk of infection associated with colonization., (© 2023. The sensitivity of NG-test CTX-M Multi assay and BL-RED test incubated 10 min for the detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae was 80.6% and 90.3% respectively. Bone and joint infections represent a potentially devastating complication of prosthetic orthopedic joint replacement, thus requiring both rapid and appropriate antibiotic treatment. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens involved in this pathology. Being able to assert its presence is the first step of efficient patient management. This monocenter study evaluated the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assay for the molecular detection of S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in bone and joint biopsy specimens and synovial fluids. This test, together with conventional techniques, including standard cultures and the 16S rRNA amplification assay, was performed on 208 successive perioperative samples collected prospectively for 1 year obtained from 129 patients. Using conventional techniques, we detected a microbial pathogen in 76 samples from 58 patients, 40 of which were identified as S. aureus. The limit of detection (LOD) of the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assay was experimentally determined for bone and joint biopsy specimens and synovial fluids using negative samples spiked with S. aureus ATCC 43300. The sensitivities of S. aureus detection with the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assay were 82.5% (33/40 samples) and 97.5% (39/40 samples) using the manufacturer's LOD and an experimentally determined LOD, respectively. Interestingly, using the osteoarticular specific LOD, 15 additional samples were determined to be positive for S. aureus DNA with the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assay; in all cases, these samples were obtained from patients considered to be infected with S. aureus according to their clinical and microbiological records. The results were available within 24 h, which could help to expedite therapeutic decisions.

Understanding the immune responses elicited by SARS-CoV-2 infection is critical in terms of protection against reinfection and, thus, for public health policy and vaccine development for COVID-19. In this study, using either live SARS-CoV-2 particles or retroviruses pseudotyped with the SARS-CoV-2 S viral surface protein (Spike), we studied the neutralizing antibody (nAb) response in serum samples from a cohort of 140 SARS-CoV-2 qPCR-confirmed infections, including patients with mild symptoms and also more severe forms, including those that required intensive care. We show that nAb titers correlated strongly with disease severity and with anti-spike IgG levels. Indeed, patients from intensive care units exhibited high nAb titers; conversely, patients with milder disease symptoms had heterogeneous nAb titers, and asymptomatic or exclusive outpatient-care patients had no or low nAbs. We found that nAb activity in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients displayed a relatively rapid decline after recovery compared to individuals infected with other coronaviruses. Moreover, we found an absence of cross-neutralization between endemic coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2, indicating that previous infection by human coronaviruses may not generate protective nAbs against SARS-CoV-2. Finally, we found that the D614G mutation in the spike protein, which has recently been identified as the current major variant in Europe, does not allow neutralization escape. Altogether, our results contribute to our understanding of the immune correlates of SARS-CoV-2-induced disease, and rapid evaluation of the role of the humoral response in the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 is warranted.

Mobile phones (MPs) of healthcare workers (HCWs) may represent an important source of transmission of infectious agents. This longitudinal study documents the contamination of these tools. Ten MPs handled by senior pediatricians were sampled once a week during 23 weeks in three pediatric wards of the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne, France. Cultures were performed for bacteria and multiplex PCR assays for a panel of respiratory and enteric viruses. A questionnaire on hygiene habits regarding phoning and care was filled-in by pediatricians before and after the study. From a total of 230 samples, 145 (63%) were contaminated by at least one pathogen. The MPs from emergency departments were the most impacted. Viruses were detected in 179 samples; bacteria were isolated in 59 samples. Contamination increased during the winter epidemic peak. A cross-contamination by Paracoccus yeei between hands and MPs of different HCWs was demonstrated. The communication of the study results influenced the hygiene behaviors. This study highlights the contamination of MPs by pathogens that are resistant in the environment, and its sustainability along the winter season. The role of MPs as vectors of nosocomial infection needs to be better investigated.

Background: Preoperative decolonization is recommended in Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriers scheduled for cardiac surgery. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of and compliance with mupirocin use in nasal S. aureus carriers in a real-life setting., Methods: Prospective study including consecutive patients scheduled for cardiac surgery screened for S. aureus nasal carriage at preoperative consultation. Carriers were prescribed mupirocin nasal ointment, chlorhexidine shower and mouthwash. Effectiveness of decolonization was evaluated with a postoperative nasal sample. Compliance was evaluated objectively by determination of nasal mupirocin concentration using UPLC-MS/MS and self-reported by questionnaire., Results: Over 10 months, 361 patients were included, 286 had preoperative screening, 75 (26.2%) were S. aureus nasal carriers and 19 of them (25.3%) failed to be effectively decolonized. No resistance to mupirocin was documented. Preoperative and postoperative strains were identical in all cases. Declared good compliance was associated with decolonization success (OR = 24; 95% CI 4-143, P < 0.0001). Mupirocin detection was significantly associated with the level of compliance. Mupirocin was detected in 52.2% (24/46) of patients effectively decolonized and in 12.5% (2/16) of patients with decolonization failure (P < 0.01). In 2/19 patients, failure of decolonization was not associated with a compliance issue. Postoperative carriage was associated with an increased risk of S. aureus infection (OR = 9.8; 95% CI 1.8-53, P < 0.01)., Conclusions: In real life, decolonization is not always effective, hence there is a persisting risk of S. aureus endogenous infection. Background: Despite vaccination programs, Streptococcus pneumoniae remains among the main microorganisms involved in bacterial pneumonia, notably in terms of severity. The prognosis of pneumococcal infections is conditioned in part by the precocity of the diagnosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) targeting cell wall polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumoniae and performed directly in respiratory samples, on the strategy of diagnosis of respiratory pneumococcal infections in children., Results: Upper-respiratory tract samples from 196 children consulting at hospital for respiratory infection were tested for detecting S. pneumoniae using a newly-designed RDT (PneumoResp, Biospeedia), a semi-quantitative culture and two PCR assays. If positive on fluidized undiluted specimen, the RDT was repeated on 1:100-diluted sample. The RDT was found highly specific when tested on non-S. pneumoniae strains. By comparison to culture and PCR assays, the RDT on undiluted secretions exhibited a sensitivity (Se) and negative predictive value (NPV) of more than 98%. By comparison to criteria of S. pneumoniae pneumonia combining typical symptoms, X-ray image, and culture ≥10 7  CFU/ml, the Se and NPV of RDT on diluted specimens were 100% in both cases., Conclusions: In case of negative result, the excellent NPV of RDT on undiluted secretions allows excluding S. pneumoniae pneumonia. In case of positive result, the excellent sensitivity of RDT on diluted secretions for the diagnosis of S. pneumoniae pneumonia allows proposing a suitable antimicrobial treatment at day 0.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between nasal and rectal Staphylococcus aureus carriage in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and the occurrence of ICU-acquired infections related to S. aureus carriage. Three hundred and ninety-five patients admitted in ICU were screened for S. aureus nasal and rectal carriages and followed to record S. aureus infections during their stay. S. aureus strains were genotyped by arbitrarily primed PCR, spa-typing, microarray and whole genome sequencing. At ICU admission, 112 of 363 (30.9%) patients carried S. aureus including 61 (16.8%) exclusive nasal carriers, 40 (11.0%) combined nasal and rectal carriers and 11 (3.0%) exclusive rectal carriers. The 152 S. aureus isolates from nasal and rectal swabs belonged to 19 clonal complexes (CCs). Patients colonized in both nose and rectum harboured different strains in at least 40% of cases according to arbitrarily primed PCR data. Nasal carriers of CC5 S. aureus had an increased risk of rectal carriage (RR = 1.85, P < .05). S. aureus nasal and rectal carriage was a risk factor of S. aureus ICU-acquired infection (RR = 4.04; 95%CI [1.38-11.76]). Incidence rates of endogenous ICU-acquired infections in exclusive nasal carriers, exclusive rectal carriers and in both nasal and rectal carriers were 0.08 (5/61), 0.09 (1/11) and 0.03 (1/40), respectively (p = 0.47). Rectal swabbing increased the detection of S. aureus carriage and revealed an important diversity of S. aureus strains in ICU patients. Further studies are needed to understand how S. aureus rectal carriage increases the risk of endogenous ICU-acquired infections.

Rapid bacterial identification of positive blood culture is important for adapting the antimicrobial therapy in patients with blood stream infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the multiplex FilmArray Blood Culture Identification (BCID) assay by comparison to an in-house protocol based on MALDI-TOF MS identification of microcolonies after a 4-hour culture, for identifying on the same day the microorganisms present in positive blood culture bottles. One hundred and fifty-three positive bottles from 123 patients were tested prospectively by the 3 techniques of bacterial identification: 11 bottles yielding negative results by the 3 tests were considered false positive (7.2%). The reference MALDI-TOF MS technique identified 134 monomicrobial (87.6%) and 8 double infections (5.2%), which resulted in a total of 150 microorganisms. Globally, 137 (91.3%) of these 150 pathogens were correctly identified by the fully automated multiplex FilmArray BCID system at the species or genus level on day of growth detection, versus 117 (78.8%) by MALDI-TOF MS identification on nascent microcolonies after a 4-hour culture ( P < 0.01). By combining the two approaches, 140 (93.5%) of the positive bottles were identified successfully at day 0. These results confirm the excellent sensitivity of the FilmArray BCID assay, notably in case of multimicrobial infection. Due to the limited number of targets included into the test, it must be coupled to another identification strategy, as that presented in this study relying on MALDI-TOF MS identification of microcolonies obtained after a very short culture period.

Viral infections of the respiratory tract can be complicated by bacterial superinfection, resulting in a significantly longer duration of illness and even a fatal outcome. In this review, we focused on interactions between S. aureus and non-influenza viruses. Clinical data evidenced that rhinovirus infection may increase the S. aureus carriage load in humans and its spread. In children, respiratory syncytial virus infection is associated with S. aureus carriage. The mechanisms by which some non-influenza respiratory viruses predispose host cells to S. aureus superinfection can be summarized in three categories: i) modifying expression levels of cellular patterns involved in S. aureus adhesion and/or internalization, ii) inducing S. aureus invasion of epithelial cells due to the disruption of tight junctions, and iii) decreasing S. aureus clearance by altering the immune response. The comprehension of pathways involved in S. aureus-respiratory virus interactions may help developing new strategies of preventive and curative therapy.

Introduction: Recent data highlight the importance of screening more than one site for improving the detection of S. aureus colonization. Intestinal carriage is frequently under-investigated and its clinical impact ought to be defined a better way. Areas covered: This review and meta-analysis provide an updated overview of prevalence, characteristics and clinical significance of S. aureus intestinal carriage in different populations, both for methicillin-susceptible and -resistant S. aureus strains. Expert commentary: Intestinal S. aureus carriage is documented with higher prevalence in children and in patients with S. aureus skin and soft tissue infections. This site of colonization was shown to be associated with a high risk of dissemination in the environment and with S. aureus infection. Intestinal carriage is frequently retrieved in nasal carriers, reflecting probably an association with a high bacterial load. Exclusive intestinal carriage present in one third of intestinal carriers can be associated with infection. Comparative genotyping analysis of different strains from nasal and extra-nasal sites of carriage, including the intestinal ones, in the same individuals, would allow a better comprehension of the pathophysiology of S. aureus endogenous infection. It could also permit to improve the prevention of these infections by decolonization of sites implicated in infection genesis.

Beyond their hemostatic functions, platelets alter their inflammatory response according to the bacterial stimulus. Staphylococcus aureus is associated with exacerbated inflammation and thrombocytopenia, which is associated with poor prognosis during sepsis. Acetylsalicylic acid and statins prevent platelet aggregation and decrease the mortality rate during sepsis. Therefore, we assessed whether these two molecules could reduce in vitro platelet activation and the inflammatory response to S. aureus. Platelets were exposed to clinical strains of S. aureus in the presence or absence of acetylsalicylic acid or fluvastatin. Platelet activation, aggregation, and release of soluble sCD62P, sCD40 Ligand, RANTES and GROα were assessed. Platelet cell death was evaluated by analyzing the mitochondrial membrane potential, phosphatidylserine exposure, platelet microparticle release and caspase-3 activation. All S. aureus strains induced platelet activation but not aggregation and decreased the platelet count, the expression of cell death markers and the release of RANTES and GROα. Acetylsalicylic acid but not fluvastatin limited platelet activation and inflammatory factor release and restored the platelet count by protecting platelets from Staphylococcus-induced expression of cell death markers. This study demonstrates that acetylsalicylic acid limits S. aureus-induced effects on platelets by reducing cell death, revealing new strategies to reduce the platelet contribution to bacteremia-associated inflammation.

Objectives: Legionnaires' disease (LD) is a severe disease associated with community and hospital-acquired pneumonia, frequently under diagnosed. The main aim of our study was to determine the value of PCR for the diagnosis of LD in routine clinical practice., Methods: In a prospective study, from March 2007 to April 2010, the value of PCR on non-invasive respiratory specimens (NIRS) was compared to those of the other available tools for LD diagnosis in patients hospitalized for pneumonia., Results: Among 254 consecutive cases of pneumonia included, 24 cases were LD (19 confirmed and 5 probable) representing the first documented microbiological etiology. Molecular diagnosis of LD was performed on NIRS by using 16S rRNA PCR, and secondarily mip PCR, with no discrepant results between the 2 methods: it was found positive in 14 cases and led to identify 2 supplementary probable cases of LD. Based on clinical and at least 2 positive LD tests, PCR yielded a better diagnostic value than antigen urinary test (12 vs 10 cases)., Conclusion: These results revealed that molecular diagnosis of LD on NIRS is reliable and may contribute to better identify cases of LD., (Copyright © 2016 The British Infection Association. In contrast to Staphylococcus aureus intermittent nasal carriers, persistent ones have the highest risk of infection. This study reports the usefulness of a simple nasal sampling algorithm to identify the S. aureus nasal carriage state of hemodialysis patients (HPs) and their subsequent risk of infection.From a cohort of 85 HPs, 76 were screened for S. aureus nasal carriage once a week during a 10-week period. The S. aureus nasal load was quantified by using either culture on chromogenic medium or fully automated real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. Molecular typing was used to compare strains from carriage and infection.The algorithm based on quantitative cultures was able to determine the status of S. aureus nasal carriage with a sensitivity of 95.8%, a specificity of 94.2%, a positive predictive value of 88.5%, and a negative predictive value of 98.0%. Of note, the determination of the S. aureus carriage state was obtained on the first nasal sample for all the 76 HPs, but 1 (98.7%). The algorithm based on quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay directly from the specimen yielded similar performances. During the 1-year follow-up after the last sampling episode, HPs classified as persistent nasal carriers with the algorithm were found to have a higher risk of S. aureus infection than those classified as nonpersistent carriers (P < 0.05), especially for infections of endogenous origin (P < 0.001).This simple algorithm is reliable for determining the S. aureus nasal carriage status in clinical practice and could contribute to characterize at an early stage of take-up patients with the highest risk of S. aureus infection., Competing Interests: POV received travel grants form Alere and Cepheid.

Mycoplasma spp. are rarely recognized agents of infective endocarditis. We report a case of Mycoplasma hominis prosthetic valve endocarditis diagnosed by 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) PCR and culture of valves in a 74-year-old man. Four chromogenic media were compared for their ability to detect urinary tract pathogens in 299 urine specimens, of which 175 were found positive, allowing the growth of 279 microorganisms.
