4. Making a Difference through Sustained In-Service Teacher Training

Abstract

This study is based on collaboration between a school and a university on professional development training of 4th and 5th grade elementary school teachers in a southeastern state in the USA. The study was three-pronged and focused on teacher knowledge, pedagogy, and student achievement. We examined how the building of teacher capacity affected the performance of underachieving students in math and literacy. Underachieving students were targeted with specific strategies, projects, problems solving stories, self-reflection, and higher-level thinking questions. Student performance was measured for literacy achievement, with quantitative and qualitative measures used for data collection purposes. Students showed progress over previous years in reading scores. Teachers' growth in knowledge related to the content area was evidenced by the consistently high mean scores. Teachers' self-ratings on the frequency of using the targeted strategies were indirect evidence of their implementation in the classroom. The results were positive and showed significant progress over previous years concerning student achievement.

13. The Effects of a Site-Based Teacher Professional Development Program on Student Learning

Abstract

A mixed methods study is used to investigate the effectiveness of a professional development program intended to enhance teacher knowledge and student learning so as to systematically improve student achievement in elementary literacy. In this study, a large urban school district partnered with a local university to provide intervention in a Title 1, low-performing elementary school. Measures included teacher knowledge and practices based on surveys, classroom observation, and student achievement data. Teachers self-reported their perspectives on school-based teacher training in terms of its significance, requirements, challenges, and possible solutions to teacher training. Schools were selected based on their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading/ language arts' status. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a measurement defined by the federal No Child Left Behind Act that allows the U.S. Department of Education to assess the academic performance of every public school and school district in the country by using the results on standardized tests. The collaboration effort involved supporting the school's goal of enhancing reading, language arts, and math achievement of students by providing interventions targeted toward grades four and five.

20. Principles and Practices of Teaching English Language Learners

Abstract

This conceptual paper presents diverse approaches and strategies for preparing competent teachers who work with either English Language Learners (ELLs) or students who speak English as a Second Language (ESL). The pedagogical approaches discussed herein include practical and hands-on activities for teachers at any level. Bilingual learning improves ELL's cognitive development as well as their self-esteem. The paper outlines underlying principles for the best practices with an emphasis on ESL students and also to other learning situations and students. Teachers can modify their instructional methods to adjust ELL's learning needs. Specifically, even though the discussion is framed in the context of ESL students in U.S. classrooms, it is applicable to TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) environments in schools and other centers of learning.

Abstract

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show increased levels of parenting stress, but only one study has examined this association before a diagnostic evaluation. We conducted a cross-sectional study of parenting stress in 317 low SES parents with children at-risk for ASD before a diagnostic evaluation. Multiple regression modeling evaluated the associations between parenting stress and parent and child factors. Parenting stress was negatively associated with social support and positively associated with active avoidance coping and parental worry. However, parenting stress was not associated with the child's ASD symptom severity or adaptive functioning, except for self-direction. Findings suggest parenting stress among parents of children at risk of ASD should be assessed prior to diagnosis. Abstract

This narrative study explores the use of code-switching in the second-language classroom from the perspective of a Saudi English language instructor. The aim was to explore how the instructor experienced code-switching as a student and used it in her teaching. The main research question guiding the study was: How does a Saudi English language teacher perceive and utilize codeswitching in her teaching practice, and how does this relate to her experiences as a language learner? The study holds significance in contributing to the ongoing discourse on code-switching in second-language classrooms, providing a nuanced understanding from the perspective of an individual who has experienced it as both a learner and a teacher. Examining code-switching from the viewpoint of a Saudi English instructor can offer valuable insights into teaching practices, student engagement, cognitive benefits, and sociolinguistic dynamics within the Saudi educational context, where Arabic is the dominant language and English is increasingly important. The study utilized a narrative inquiry approach involving a series of interviews. However, excessive reliance on code-switching may hinder language acquisition, and learners should gradually reduce their dependence on it as their proficiency improves. The study provided valuable insights into the lived experiences of second language learners and teachers, underscoring the need for further research using this methodology in the field of second language acquisition. These challenges include fertility concerns, disruptions to educational and occupational pursuits, issues related to body image and sexual health, and the need for age-appropriate psychosocial support within their communities. The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PM), a quaternary care center, established a specialized AYA program in 2014, offering holistic and developmentally tailored psychosocial support and currently, efforts are underway to expand this to other regions in the province to address the need for equitable access. The establishment process involves securing funding, conducting an environmental scan, identifying service gaps, developing clinical pathways, and implementing AYA supportive care. An accessible AYA program should also consider social determinants of health, social location, intersectionality, and an interdisciplinary health approach in understanding health inequities in AYA oncology care. This paper describes the processes implemented and challenges faced in creating a community-based AYA program beyond major resource-rich cities and efforts to address intersectionality. Abstract

This paper presents a study of the design of a wing-mounted with a morphing winglet, along with its aerodynamic and structural analysis. The concept of span-wise morphing of winglets is proposed as it is an effective technology for enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and has the potential to replace conventional control surfaces. Further, the main advantages of variable span morphing winglets are the drag reduction that leads to an increase in range and endurance of the flight. The design includes a honeycomb core placed in between the skin of the winglet where span-wise morphing occurs to increase the structural integrity. Two actuators are used which are fixed at the rib of the winglet to carry out the span-wise morphing of the winglet. For aerodynamic analysis, ANSYS Fluent solver is used to investigate a flow field in a three-dimensional wing structure and to obtain lift/drag variations. It was observed that a 25% extension in span leads to a 4% increase in overall L/D. This shows that morphing in winglets can be a profound way to increase the aerodynamic efficiency of aerial vehicles [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

42. Effect of a Mindful Breathing Intervention on Community College Students' Writing Apprehension and Writing Performance

Abstract

Mindful breathing has been linked to changes in physiology, but we took the practice further by examining whether a mindfulness breathing intervention, a three-minute breathing exercise marked by focused attention on the sensations of breath, affected writing anxiety, and writing performance measures. In addition, we examined mindful breathing as an intervention for community college students--some of the most at risk and underprepared students in higher education in the United States. We compared Daly Miller Writing Apprehension surveys and narrative writing samples from 277 students enrolled in a freshman composition course at a southeastern community college, half of the class sections were randomly assigned to practice a mindful-breathing technique at the beginning of class sessions. Students in the class sections that practiced mindful-breathing group experienced a statistically significant decrease in writing apprehension and mechanical error scores from pre- to post-test when compared to students in the comparison class sections.

Abstract

Young adults (YAs), defined as individuals between the ages of 18 and 39 years, experience unique challenges when diagnosed with advanced cancer. Using the social constructivist grounded theory approach, we aimed to develop a theoretical understanding of how YAs live day to day with their diagnosis. A sample of 25 YAs (aged 22–39 years) with advanced cancer from across Canada participated in semi-structured interviews. Findings illustrate that the YAs described day-to-day life as an oscillating experience swinging between two opposing disease outcomes: (1) hoping for a cure and (2) facing the possibility of premature death. Oscillating between these potential outcomes was characterized as living in a liminal space wherein participants were unsure how to live from one day to the next. The participants oscillated at various rates, with different factors influencing the rate of oscillation, including inconsistent and poor messaging from their oncologists or treatment team, progression or regression of their cancer, and changes in their physical functioning and mental health. Abstract

With medical advancements and improvements in medical technology, an increasing number of children with chronic conditions survive into adulthood. There is accordant growing interest toward supporting adolescents throughout the transition from paediatric to adult care. However, there is currently a paucity of research focusing on the role that these patients' parents should play during and after the transition to adult care and if maintained parental involvement is beneficial during this transition within a North American context. Accordingly, this scoping review utilized Arksey and O'Malley's five-step framework to consider parental roles during chronically ill children's transition to adult care. APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, ProQuest, and Scopus were searched alongside advanced Google searches. Thematic content analysis was conducted on 30 articles meeting the following inclusion criteria: (1) published in English between 2010 and 2022, (2) conducted in Canada or the United States, (3) considered adolescents with chronic conditions transitioning to adult care, (4) family being noted in the title or abstract, and (5) patient populations of study not being defined by delays in cognitive development, nor mental illness. Three themes emerged from the literature: the impacts of maintaining parental involvement during transition to adult care for patients, parents experiencing feeling loss of stability and support surrounding the transition of their child's care, and significant nonmedical life events occurring for youths at the time of transition of care. Parents assuming supportive roles which change alongside their maturing child's needs were reported as being beneficial to young peoples' transition processes, while parents who hover over or micromanage their children during this time were found to hinder successful transitions. Ultimately, the majority of reviewed articles emphasized maintained parental involvement as having a net positive impact on adolescents' transitions to adult care. As such, practice and policies should be structured to engage parents throughout the transition process to best support their chronically ill children during this time of change. This paper examines the controversy surrounding the use of Ebonics among African American students in schools in the United States, with a twofold purpose: (1) to focus on the primary function of language as a tool of communication that varies in its use according to the social context; and (2) to provide suggestions to teachers of ways to support students' acquisition of standard English without devaluing the nonstandard variants they may have learned in their homes and communities. The discussion is highlighted in the paper with classroom stories, anecdotes, and vignettes.
