Numerical simulations of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) conventionally assume a rigid boundary condition for the pinna. The human pinna, however, is an elastic deformable body that can vibrate due to incident acoustic waves. This work investigates how sound-induced vibrations of the pinna can affect simulated HRTF magnitudes. The work will motivate the research question by measuring the sound-induced vibrational patterns of an artificial pinna with a high-speed holographic interferometric system. Then, finite element simulations are used to determine HRTFs for a tabletop model of the B&K 5128 head and torso simulator for a number of directions. Two scenarios are explored: one where the pinna is modeled as perfectly rigid, and another where the pinna is modeled as linear elastic with material properties close to that of auricular cartilage. The findings suggest that pinna vibrations have negligible effects on HRTF magnitudes up to 5 kHz. The same conclusion, albeit with less certainty, is drawn for higher frequencies. Finally, the importance of the elastic domain's material properties is emphasized and possible implications for validation studies on dummy heads 1as well as the limitations of the present work are discussed in detail. In this Letter, we provide an experimental demonstration of amplitude-dependent dispersion tuning of surface acoustic waves interacting with nonlinear resonators. Leveraging the similarity between the dispersion properties of plate edge waves and surface waves propagating in a semi-infinite medium, we use a setup consisting of a plate with a periodic arrangement of bead-magnet resonators along one of its edges. Nonlinear contact between the ferromagnetic beads and magnets is exploited to realize nonlinear local resonance effects. First, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear softening nature and amplitude-dependent dynamics of a single bead-magnet resonator on both rigid and compliant substrates. Next, the dispersion properties of the system in the linear regime are investigated. Finally, we demonstrate how the interplay of nonlinear local resonances with plate edge waves gives rise to amplitude-dependent dispersion properties. Summary: The finite element method (FEM) and the spectral boundary integral method (SBI) have both been widely used in the study of dynamic rupture simulations along a weak interface. In this paper, we present a hybrid method that combines FEM and SBI through the consistent exchange of displacement and traction boundary conditions, thereby benefiting from the flexibility of FEM in handling problems with nonlinearities or small‐scale heterogeneities and from the superior performance and accuracy of SBI. We validate the hybrid method using a benchmark problem from the Southern California Earthquake Center's dynamic rupture simulation validation exercises.We further demonstrate the capability and computational efficiency of the hybrid scheme for resolving off‐fault heterogeneities by studying a 2D in‐plane shear crack in two different settings: one where the crack is embedded in a high‐velocity zone and another where it is embedded in a low‐velocity zone. The finite difference (FD) and the spectral boundary integral (SBI) methods have been used extensively to model spontaneously-propagating shear cracks in a variety of engineering and geophysical applications. In this paper, we propose a new modelling approach in which these two methods are combined through consistent exchange of boundary tractions and displacements. Benefiting from the flexibility of FD and the efficiency of SBI methods, the proposed hybrid scheme will solve a wide range of problems in a computationally efficient way. We demonstrate the validity of the approach using two examples for dynamic rupture propagation: one in the presence of a low-velocity layer and the other in which off-fault plasticity is permitted. We discuss possible potential uses of the hybrid scheme in earthquake cycle simulations as well as an exact absorbing boundary condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
