We examined the effects of acute alcohol on eyewitness memory for a simulated armed robbery under laboratory conditions. Alcohol and placebo participants viewed a slide series showing a target male taking a laptop from a helpdesk assistant, either on loan or at gunpoint. Following a brief retention period, participants responded to "central" multiple-choice questions, about the target's actions face and clothing, and "peripheral" questions about other scene features. Alcohol participants shown the no-weapon scene displayed poorer peripheral memory than placebo controls, though alcohol did not impair peripheral memory among weapon scene viewers. Alcohol participants also showed a weapon focus effect, providing less accurate responses to central questions related to details about the target male than no-weapon controls. These findings are consistent with alcohol myopia theory and suggest intoxicated eyewitnesses may be more susceptible to weapon focus than sober counterparts.

INTRODUCTION: Recent technological advances have increased the risk that de‐identified brain images could be re‐identified from face imagery. The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) is a leading source of publicly available de‐identified brain imaging, who quickly acted to protect participants' privacy. METHODS: An independent expert committee evaluated 11 face‐deidentification ("de‐facing") methods and selected four for formal testing. RESULTS: Effects of de‐facing on brain measurements were comparable across methods and sufficiently small to recommend de‐facing in ADNI. The committee ultimately recommended mri_reface for advantages in reliability, and for some practical considerations. ADNI leadership approved the committee's recommendation, beginning in ADNI4. DISCUSSION: ADNI4 de‐faces all applicable brain images before subsequent pre‐processing, analyses, and public release. Trained analysts inspect de‐faced images to confirm complete face removal and complete non‐modification of brain. This paper details the history of the algorithm selection process and extensive validation, then describes the production workflows for de‐facing in ADNI. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Core has been operating since Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative's (ADNI) inception, providing 20 years of data including reliable, multi‐platform standardized protocols, carefully curated image data, and quantitative measures provided by expert investigators. The overarching purposes of the MRI Core include: (1) optimizing and standardizing MRI acquisition methods, which have been adopted by many multicenter studies and trials worldwide and (2) providing curated images and numeric summary values from relevant MRI sequences/contrasts to the scientific community. Over time, ADNI MRI has become increasingly complex. To remain technically current, the ADNI MRI protocol has changed substantially over the past two decades. The ADNI 4 protocol contains nine different imaging types (e.g., three dimensional [3D] T1‐weighted and fluid‐attenuated inversion recovery [FLAIR]). Our view is that the ADNI MRI data are a greatly underutilized resource. The purpose of this paper is to educate the scientific community on ADNI MRI methods and content to promote greater awareness, accessibility, and use. INTRODUCTION: Well‐chosen biomarkers have the potential to increase the efficiency of clinical trials and drug discovery and should show good precision as well as clinical validity. METHODS: We suggest measures that operationalize these criteria and describe a general approach that can be used for inference‐based comparisons of biomarker performance. The methods are applied to measures obtained from structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from individuals with mild dementia (n = 70) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI; n = 303) enrolled in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. RESULTS: Ventricular volume and hippocampal volume showed the best precision in detecting change over time in both individuals with MCI and with dementia. Differences in clinical validity varied by group. DISCUSSION: The methodology presented provides a standardized framework for comparison of biomarkers across modalities and across different methods used to generate similar measures and will help in the search for the most promising biomarkers. The goal of the Biostatistics Core of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) has been to ensure that sound study designs and statistical methods are used to meet the overall goals of ADNI. We have supported the creation of a well‐validated and well‐curated longitudinal database of clinical and biomarker information on ADNI participants and helped to make this accessible and usable for researchers. We have developed a statistical methodology for characterizing the trajectories of clinical and biomarker change for ADNI participants across the spectrum from cognitively normal to dementia, including multivariate patterns and evidence for heterogeneity in cognitive aging. We have applied these methods and adapted them to improve clinical trial design. ADNI‐4 will offer us a chance to help extend these efforts to a more diverse cohort with an even richer panel of biomarker data to support better knowledge of and treatment for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Learning Dashboards display analytics pertaining to student performance and attainment, often alongside scores for the class cohort average. Little research has considered the effects of this social comparison information on students' well-being, motivation, and engagement. The current study presented participants with hypothetical data that simulated a student performing above, below, or at the class average before measuring self-esteem, persistence on an impossible anagram task, and willingness to engage with study support services. Our results showed that where upward social comparisons were induced (exposure to Dashboard data displaying engagement and attainment below the class average), students reported lower self-esteem than participants presented with above average vignette data. Interestingly, this effect was not moderated by the grade profile of students and no effects on persistence or willingness to engage with study support were observed. We conclude that upward social comparisons in Dashboard data can have negative consequences for students' self-esteem.

In this quasi-experimental field study, bar drinkers (0.00-0.23% blood alcohol content) viewed a photographic sequence in which a male took a laptop from a helpdesk assistant, either on loan or at gunpoint. Following a brief retention period, participants answered 20 multiple-choice questions about the male, his actions, and details of the scene, then attempted to identify him from a simultaneous target-present or target-absent line-up. Alcohol was associated with a reduction in correct identifications and an increase in false identifications. Surprisingly, the presence of a weapon in the scene enhanced identification accuracy, though wider scene memory was not influenced by alcohol or the weapon. Findings offer some support for the view that alcohol restricts face encoding, perhaps through the narrowing of attention to salient external features (e.g., hair). We also suggest that curiosity about mock-crime perpetrators may produce weapon focus reversals, although the factors that might elicit such curiosity remain unclear.

In this study, we aimed to understand the state of school grounds across Britain and how they are being used to support biodiversity conservation and pupils' environmental education. We carried out an opt-in survey of schools across Britain, asking staff to report on habitats in their grounds and how they are used for learning. Our results showed that schools are under-using their grounds to provide habitats and environmental education. Realizing the potential of these spaces could be a vital tool in the future success of species diversity. This could be done through changes to the national curricula and teacher training.

Many males with FXS meet criteria for ASD. This study was designed to (1) describe ASD symptoms in adolescent and young adult males with FXS (n = 44) and (2) evaluate the contributions to ASD severity of cognitive, language, and psychiatric factors, as well as FMRP (the protein deficient in FXS). A few ASD symptoms on the ADOS-2 were universal in the sample. There was less impairment in restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRB) than in the social affective (SA) domain. The best predictor of overall ASD severity and SA severity was expressive syntactic ability. RRB severity was best predicted by the psychiatric factors. Implications for clinical practice and for understanding the ASD comorbidity in FXS are discussed.

The author argues that despite demonstrable successes of public education, school leaders have not framed an effective defense against decades-long charges of school failure. Drawing on leadership literature from Aristotle through today's airport best-sellers, the author suggests that school superintendents have an obligation to make a case for public schools through a strategy of inoculation that acknowledges some shortcomings, reframing to point out the strengths of public schools, and communication that introduces audiences to the complexities of public schools in today's world. The case to be made: we have the best public schools in the world, international rankings compare apples and oranges, and many children in the United States are living in Third World conditions.

Ankle fractures are one of the most resource-consuming traumatic orthopedic injuries. Few studies have successfully evaluated the episode-of-care costs (EOCC) of common traumatic orthopedic injuries. The objective of this study was to determine the EOCC associated with the surgical management of ankle fractures. A retrospective cohort study of 105 consecutive patients who underwent open reduction internal fixation of an isolated ankle fracture at a Canadian Level-1 trauma center was conducted. Episode-of-care costs were generated using an activity-based costing framework. The median global episode-of-care cost for ankle fracture surgeries performed at the studied institution was $3,487 CAD [IQR 880] ($2,685 USD [IQR 616]). Patients aged 60 to 90 years had a significantly higher median EOCC than younger patients (p =.01). Supination-adduction injuries had a significantly higher median EOCC than other injury patterns (p =.01). The median EOCC for patients who underwent surgery within 10 days of their injury ($3,347 CAD [582], $2,577 USD [448]) was significantly lower than the cost for patients who had their surgery delayed 10 days or more after the injury ($3,634 CAD [776], $2,798 USD [598]) (p =.03). Patient sex, anesthesia type, ASA score and surgeon's fellowship training did not affect the EOCC. This study provides valuable data on predictors of EOCC in the surgical management of ankle fractures. Delaying simple ankle fracture cases due to operating time constraints can increase the total cost and burden of these fractures on the healthcare system.
