1. Equine-Assisted Services for Motor Outcomes of Autistic Children: A Systematic Review

Abstract

The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize the research literature on equine-assisted services for motor outcomes of autistic children. Eligible articles published between June 2012 and June 2023 were identified through electronic database searches, including PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines were adopted. Twelve articles met the inclusion criteria, and the extracted data included study characteristics, equine-assisted service features, and major motor outcome findings. Significant improvements were identified in coordination, strength, balance, posture, and overall motor skills, affirming the efficacy of equine-assisted services in enhancing motor outcomes of autistic children. To advance future equine-assisted service studies, prioritization of motor outcomes as primary variables is recommended. This emphasis should be evident in research aims, standardized measures, and terminology used to describe equine-assisted services.

2. Brief Report: Differential Persistence of Primary Reflexes for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder-- A Systematic Replication

Abstract

Primary reflexes are highly stereotypical, automatic movements comprising much of the motor repertoire of newborns. The current study examined rates of presence of five primary reflexes (snout, visual rooting, sucking, tactile rooting, and grasp) and variables predictive of their persistence for children with ASD (n = 35), developmental disability (n = 30), and typically developing children matched to participants with ASD on chronological age (n = 30). There was a higher prevalence of snout and visual rooting reflex among children with ASD. These data suggest that the persistence of primary reflexes holds promise as a biomarker for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

13. Interdependency, Alternative Forms of Mathematical Agency and Joy as Challenges to Ableist Narratives about the Learning and Teaching of Mathematics

Abstract

Catering for the mathematical needs of disabled learners equitably and productively requires the anti-ableist preparation and professional development of teachers. In CAPTeaM (Challenging Ableist Perspectives on the Teaching of Mathematics), we design tasks that emulate inclusion-related challenges from the mathematics classroom, and we engage teachers with these tasks in workshop settings. In this paper, we focus on evidence from one type of task in which participants engage in small groups with solving a mathematical problem while at least one of them is temporarily and artificially deprived of access to a sensory field or familiar channel of communication. In this paper, we focus on evidence of emerging resignification -- discursive and affective shifts in the participating teachers' sense-making about what makes the construction of mathematical meaning possible and valuably different -- as they work on the tasks. By linking Vygotsky's vision about the educational changes required to empower and include disabled learners with more contemporary ideas from embodied cognition and disability studies, our analyses show how engagement with the tasks affects participants' realisation and appreciation of interdependencies between learners, teacher, resources, and emotions, highlights alternative forms of mathematical agency and gives opportunities to turn initial sense of impasse and despair into joy.

14. Environmental Correlates of Physical Activity and Screen-Time in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Seven-Country Observational Study

Abstract

This cross-sectional observational study sought to examine the environmental correlates of physical activity and screen-time among youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Parents of youth with ASD (n = 1,165) from seven countries/regions provided responses to an online survey form measuring environmental correlates (i.e., physical activity neighborhood environment, social network, social trust and cohesion, bedroom media, social home environment) and outcomes (i.e., physical activity, screen-time). Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to determine environmental predictors of the outcomes. Physical activity neighborhood environment (B = 0.15, p = 0.047), social network (B = 0.16, p = 0.02), and social home environment (B = 1.07, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with physical activity, whereas social trust and cohesion and bedroom media were not. Further, social trust and cohesion (B = -0.14, p = 0.001), bedroom media (B = 0.10, p = 0.001), and social home environment (B = -0.16, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with screen-time while neighborhood environment and social network were not. The identified environmental attributes of physical activity and screen-time behaviors should be targeted for health promotion among youth with ASD.

49. A Case Study of Visibility, Diversity, and Inclusion: 'Live from New York!' An Analysis of the Chinese Hosts on Saturday Night Live

Abstract

With a runtime of 47 years, Saturday Night Live has long served as a societal mirror that captures and creates popular culture. In recent years the show has been criticized for its lack of diverse hosts, cast and staff. Out of 930 episodes only seven episodes have been hosted by an Asian host, four of whom identify as Chinese. This research examined those four episodes through quantitative analysis, finding that the qualities of each of the hosts' characters range from just below neutral to moderately positive. The use of stereotypes and satirical racial humor varied. Jackie Chan and Lucy Liu's episodes had the highest concentration of both overt and covert stereotypes, while Awkwafina had a similar number with a lower concentration. The infrequency of Chinese representation on the show is a social issue. Such a small sample size does not allow for conclusions to be drawn. Rather, this research paints a picture of how the four Chinese hosts are portrayed on SNL as influenced by their own unique identities and the year of their appearance. In addition, the insights this case study offers has implications for shows performed in colleges and K-12 schools. Directors and sponsors of school based shows can learn from this case study how to avoid perpetuating stereotypes and how to advance diversity, equity and inclusion at their institutions.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction Artificial intelligence (AI) in radiology is a rapidly evolving field. In breast imaging, AI has already been applied in a real-world setting and multiple studies have been conducted in the area. The aim of this analysis is to identify the most influential publications on the topic of artificial intelligence in breast imaging. Methods A retrospective bibliometric analysis was conducted on artificial intelligence in breast radiology using the Web of Science database. The search strategy involved searching for the keywords ‘breast radiology’ or ‘breast imaging’ and the various keywords associated with AI such as ‘deep learning’, ‘machine learning,’ and ‘neural networks’. Results From the top 100 list, the number of citations per article ranged from 30 to 346 (average 85). The highest cited article titled ‘Artificial Neural Networks In Mammography—Application To Decision-Making In The Diagnosis Of Breast-Cancer’ was published in Radiology in 1993. Eighty-three of the articles were published in the last 10 years. The journal with the greatest number of articles was Radiology (n = 22). The most common country of origin was the United States (n = 51). Commonly occurring topics published were the use of deep learning models for breast cancer detection in mammography or ultrasound, radiomics in breast cancer, and the use of AI for breast cancer risk prediction. Conclusion This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the top 100 most-cited papers on the subject of artificial intelligence in breast radiology and discusses the current most influential papers in the field. Clinical relevance statement This article provides a concise summary of the top 100 most-cited articles in the field of artificial intelligence in breast radiology.
