Within nanotechnology, gold and silver nanostructures have unique physical, chemical, and electronic properties [1,2], which make them suitable for a number of applications. Moreover, biosynthetic methods are considered to be a safer alternative to conventional physicochemical procedures for both the environmental and biomedical applications, due to their eco-friendly nature and the avoidance of toxic chemicals in the synthesis. For this reason, employing bio routes in the synthesis of functionalized silver nanoparticles (FAgNP) have gained importance recently in this field. In the present study, we report the rapid synthesis of FAgNP through the extract of pepino (Solanum muricatum) leaves and employing microwave oven irradiation. The core-shell globular morphology and characterization of the different shaped and sized FAgNP, with a core of 20-50 nm of diameter is established using the UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Zeta potential and dynamic light scanning (DLS) studies. Moreover, cytotoxic studies employing HeLa (human cervix carcinoma) cells were undertaken to understand FAgNP interactions with cells. HeLa cells showed significant dose dependent antiproliferative activity in the presence of FAgNP at relatively low concentrations. The calculated IC50 value was 37.5 µg/mL, similar to others obtained for FAgNPs against HeLa cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetable crops contain significant amounts of many bioactive compounds which prevent and/or protect against chronic diseases. Consumers increasingly demand vegetables with improved bioactive properties and this is stimulating the development of new cultivars with enhanced content in bioactive compounds. Generally, breeding programmes of specific crops are aimed at increasing the most relevant bioactive compounds of each crop. The success of these breeding programmes depends on the availability of sources of variation for bioactive compounds. Traditional varieties and wild relatives collections are generally very variable for these compounds and in many cases it is possible to identify sources of variation of great interest among these materials. There are several breeding strategies for improving the content in bioactive compounds, including conventional strategies based on phenotyping, as well as modern strategies that rely on marker assisted selection or genetic transformation. Breeding for the enhancement of bioactive compounds may affect vegetables in a positive (e.g., extended shelflife) or negative (e.g., browning, bitterness) way other relevant traits for the success of a cultivar. The negative side effects may be circumvented by using complementary breeding strategies aimed at reducing or removing the negative impact on the characteristics and performance of a new cultivar. In summary, breeding can contribute to the development of a new generation of vegetable crops with enhanced bioactive properties and therefore to the development of the horticultural sector. Demand among consumers for fruits and vegetables with improved contents in bioactive compounds is increasing. In particular, a lot of attention is being paid to phenolic compounds, as they have been reported to present many beneficial effects for human health. However, oxidation of phenolic compounds present in the tissues of fruits and vegetables by polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) can result in browning, which affects negatively the quality of the produce. Eggplant (Solanum melongena) presents a high content in phenolics, in particular chlorogenic acid (CGA), which confers nutraceutical properties to this crop. In order to obtain information relevant for the development of varieties with high content in CGA and low browning, we have studied the diversity for CGA, PPO activity, and fruit flesh browning and their relationships in a collection of 18 Spanish accessions of eggplant. Also, using an interspecific mapping population between S. melongena and S. incanum we have mapped the genes involved in the synthesis pathway of CGA as well as the eggplant PPO genes. The results confirmed that eggplant presents high levels of CGA, and that a wide diversity exists for the three traits studied. Low levels of correlation have been found between CGA and PPO activity on one side and browning on the other, indicate that PPO is not a limiting factor in browning in the germplasm collection studied. The six genes of the pathway for the synthesis of CGA from phenylalanine have been mapped to five different linkage groups. Only two of the genes are linked indicating that selection of materials with the alleles favourable of different parents will be easily achieved. However, the five PPO genes mapped (PPO1 to PPO5) cluster together in the same linkage group, which will difficult obtaining recombinants. Mapping of these genes is of interest for marker assisted selection for high content in CGA and reduced browning. Overall, the results indicate that selection of eggplant varieties with high content in CGA and low browning is feasible. The information obtained is also useful for the genetic improvement of other fruits and vegetables in order to develop new cultivars with increased added value resulting from high content in phenolics and low browning. Scarlet (Solanum aethiopicum) and gboma (S. macrocarpon) eggplants are major vegetable crops in sub-Saharan Africa. Together with their respective wild ancestors (S. anguivi and S. dasyphyllum) and intermediate cultivated-wild forms they constitute the so-called scarlet and gboma eggplant complexes. We used conventional descriptors and the high-throughput phenomics tool Tomato Analyzer for characterizing 63 accessions of the scarlet eggplant complex, including the four S. aethiopicum cultivar groups (Aculeatum, Gilo, Kumba, and Shum), Intermediate S. aethiopicum-S. anguivi forms, and S. anguivi, and 12 cultivated and wild accessions of the gboma eggplant complex. A large diversity was found between both complexes, showing that they are very well differentiated from each other. Within the scarlet eggplant complex, many significant differences were also found among cultivar groups, but more differences were found for fruit traits evaluated with Tomato Analyzer than with conventional descriptors. In particular, Tomato Analyzer phenomics characterization was useful for distinguishing small fruited groups (Shum, Intermediate, and S. anguivi), as well as groups for which few or no significant differences were observed for plant traits. Multivariate principal components analysis (PCA) separated well all groups, except the Intermediate group which plotted between S. anguivi and small fruited S. aethiopicum accessions. For the gboma eggplant complex, S. dasyphyllum was clearly distinguished from S. macrocarpon and an important diversity was found in the latter. The results have shown that both complexes are hypervariable and have provided insight into their diversity and relationships. The information obtained has important implications for the conservation and management of genetic resources as well as for the selection and breeding of both scarlet and gboma eggplants.
