This article surfaces issues about the often-used but widely under-reported practice of working with advisory fora. We critically reflect on our experiences working with an advisory network when co-designing a research study about a 'sensitive' subject. We discuss the following: (1) How the network evolved as a matter of ethical and pragmatic choices; (2) Potential issues when discussing sensitive issues 'outside' of the participatory or participant context; and (3) Practical and epistemic issues involved in (not) 'taking' advice. We suggest that although sensitive research is more conventionally aligned with more 'radical' forms of participatory practice, advisory networks can present a useful and sometimes more appropriate form of inclusion and engagement for some advisors and for some types of research study. The article should, therefore, be of interest to a wide range of academic and practice-based health and social care staff and, in particular, those who plan to use advisory fora in their work.

Background: Moral distress has been extensively studied in developed economies; however, not much in terms of studies has been carried out in developing economies. Objective: To review the literature reporting the experience of moral distress in nurses in health care settings in developing economies. Design: An integrative literataure review was used. Method: Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online Cochrane and Psych INFO were searched to retrieve titles and abstracts of papers on the experience of moral distress in nurses in developing economies. Results: Sixteen articles reporting the experience of moral distress in nurses in developing economies published between 1984 and March 2019 were used for the review. Analysis of the findings revealed seven themes, nurses' experience of moral distress, inadequate material and human resources, end-of-life challenges, cultural and religious beliefs as a source of moral distress, perceived inactions of medical and nursing staff, impact of moral distress on nurses in developing economies and coping strategies. Conclusion: There is paucity of empirical studies on moral distress in nurses in developing economies. More qualitative studies are needed in various cultural settings to enhance its understanding in nurses working in developing economies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents findings from a qualitative study undertaken with 46 African and African Caribbean men exploring their experiences of fatherhood. Data analysis was informed by Connell's theoretical work on changing gender relations. Findings indicate that fathers' lives were mediated by masculinities, racism, gender, migration and generational changes in parenting. Fathers advocated a style of parenting centred on good communication with children. The implications of findings for theory, future research and health and social care policy regarding both children's well-being and the inclusion of fathers by health and social care practitioners are discussed.

Aims. The aim of this study was to adapt the Safety Climate Survey and examine its validity and reliability for use in the Turkish healthcare context. Background. Maintaining patient safety is a challenge for healthcare systems world-wide, and healthcare professionals need valid and reliable tools to measure improvements in safety. Methods. The Safety Climate Survey is unidimensional and contains 19 items, which are all five-point Likert-type scales as follows: 1 (totally disagree), 2 (disagree), 3 (neither agree nor disagree), 4 (agree), and 5 (totally agree). Language adaptation of the Safety Climate Survey conducted in accordance with the International Society for Pharma economics and Outcome Research (ISPOR) and expert assessments to calculate the content validity indices was undertaken in the first phase of the study. In phase two, a survey of 434 nurses employed in three hospitals in İzmir (Turkey) was conducted to test the construct validity with confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha, split-half reliability, and item-total correlation. The intraclass correlation coefficient was also checked via test-retest reliability for stability. Results. The content validity index score was 0.97 for the scale and above 0.90 for the items, confirming excellent validity. The confirmatory factor analysis showed an adequate fit, and all the factor loadings were positive and greater than 0.30. Cronbach's alpha was 0.90, and Spearman̶–Brown coefficient 0.83, indicating good internal consistency. The item-total correlation coefficients were between 0.33 and 0.70, exceeding the acceptable level. The intraclass correlation coefficient value obtained was 0.84, reflecting a good level for time stability. Conclusion. The Turkish version of the Safety Climate Survey is a valid, reliable, and practical tool which can provide essential data on safety issues for healthcare professionals and administrators. Implications for Nursing Management. The instrument can be used in hospital settings to measure the safety climate among nurses, and the results obtained can be used to inform the development of safety improvement strategies. Background: The ICECAP-Supportive Care Measure (SCM) is a self-complete measure developed to inform economic decision making at the end-of-life. Previous research has demonstrated its feasibility in hospice and nursing home settings. This is the first study of its use with patients on the organ failure trajectory. Aim: To determine the feasibility of using the ICECAP-SCM with patients experiencing end-stage organ failure in a hospital setting. Design: Participants were asked to 'think aloud' when completing the ICECAP-SCM, ICECAP-A and EQ-5D-5L measures. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and examined for errors in comprehension, retrieval, judgement, and response by five raters. Qualitative data were collected to explore reasons for errors in completing the measures and participants' views about the measures. Setting/participants: Sixty patients (with end-stage renal failure n = 18; end-stage heart failure n = 21; end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease n = 21) participated. Senior clinicians applied prognostic criteria to determine eligibility. Results: Participants reported that the measures were acceptable, clear, and easy to complete. Error rates in completing the measures were low (ICECAP-A = 3%,and ICECAP-SCM = 5.7% and EQ-5D-5L = 6.3%). There was some variation in responses between patients with different end-stage conditions, particularly those with symptom fluctuation. Some patients had not considered their end-of-life (i.e. advance care planning) and reported finding questions about this difficult to answer. Conclusion: It is feasible to use the ICECAP-SCM with patients with end-stage organ failure receiving care in hospital settings. This study provides evidence for researchers and policy makers involved in measuring end-of-life care globally. Background: Moral distress has been studied widely in nursing but not in developing economies. Aim: To investigate how moral distress is experienced by nurses working in neonatal intensive care and paediatric wards in Northern Ghana and to determine support measures offered by nurse managers. Method: Qualitative descriptive method. Forty nurses and fourteen nurse managers working with children in four hospitals in Northern Ghana were interviewed. Thematic data analysis was carried out. Results: Six themes were identified: nurses experience morally distressing situations due to a variety of causes; the impact of morally distressing situations on nurses; coping mechanisms of nurses who experienced morally distressing situations; recommendations made by the nurses to reduce the incidence of moral distress; inadequate support measures available to nurse managers and nurse managers experience moral distress too. Conclusion: The causes of moral distress in developed and developing economies are similar. The frequency and intensity of moral distress is high in Northern Ghana. Consistent with other studies conducted in Africa, nurses and nurse managers relied on their religious faith as a form of resilience. Leadership is a frequently used term, but these uses include various definitions and applications; these uses are sometimes contradictory. This definitional vagueness can be a particular challenge for professions, including social work. In comparison to other similar professions, there is a lack of leadership knowledge generation in social work. In addition, the organisational context in England has been challenging in recent decades, likely hindering development and application of leadership models. Health care has a broader empirical and conceptual development of leadership as a topic of examination. In health care literature, compassionate leadership is gaining momentum as a useful way of developing good clinical leadership. There is a strong tradition in social work of engaging with compassion as an element of social work values. We present models of compassionate leadership and consider their usefulness for the current social work knowledge base. Background: With staffing shortages affecting increasing numbers of health services globally, and predictions that shortages will worsen in the future, there is broad consensus that leaders at all levels must do more to support and develop current employees. However, the wide range of attributes of a healthy work environment identified in the literature and the financial implications of creating healthy work environments make it challenging to determine which elements of the nursing work environment are the most important in terms of workforce sustainability. This is a significant gap in our knowledge, and there is no consensus in the literature regarding definition and explanation of work environment factors in a way that facilitates prioritisation. Objectives: The aim of this review was to synthesise and evaluate the evidence of the factors which may have an effect on intention to stay and role of the work environment in enhancing nurses' intention to stay in the work environment in acute healthcare. Design and methods: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed for relevant articles published between 1990 and December 2017 using the following electronic databases: Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE), ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source, ProQuest theses and dissertations, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Plus, MEDLINE (Ovid) and PsycINFO. The reviewers independently screened the abstracts and full texts, extracted data, and assessed the methodological quality of the included papers using appropriate tools. Results: A total of 4968 studies were screened by title, abstract, and full-text review, and 29 studies were included in this review. The identified determinants of nurses' intention to stay were grouped into four main categories: individual indicators (personal and professional), organisation/profile, work environment, and patient-related. Several working environment variables identified in this review were significantly associated with the nurses' intention to stay. Conclusion: Despite the limitations of this review, the evidence indicates that attention to meso-level variables such as organisational characteristics and work environment is vital if the working environment is to improve and nurses' intention to stay is to increase. The multifaceted nature of the concept of intention to stay makes it difficult to present definitive conclusions based on the findings of this review. However, the identified theoretical models were instrumental in differentiating intention to stay from other concepts such as intention to leave, turnover and retention, theoretically, and operationally. This article explores a hidden and under-acknowledged dimension of caring in family life: when older people with care needs act in a harmful, abusive or violent way towards the family member(s) who cares for them. Thirty-eight health and social care professionals, working in the UK, took part in five focus groups to explore their experience of working with families in this situation. The group discussions were stimulated by vignettes developed from interviews with carers affected by harmful behaviour, and the data generated using this method were analysed using a thematic approach. There were two principal findings: (i) 'carer harm' is a serious and under-acknowledged problem, which practitioners have extensive experiential knowledge of and (ii) practitioners face considerable practical and ethical challenges working with affected families. Drawing on Miranda Fricker's concept of epistemic injustice, we discuss how contemporary social, legal and policy systems can make it difficult for practitioners to identify and meet the needs of affected families. Finally, we explore the role of social workers—and the support they need as a professional group—to work alongside a 'hidden' group of families seeking to manage the intersection of care, harm and intimacy in later life.
