Abstract Background In recent years, global climate change in tandem with increased human activity has resulted in habitat degradation or the migration of rare medicinal plants, potentially impacting the quality of medicinal herbs. Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus is a valuable bulk medicinal material in Northwest China. As the demand for this medicinal herb continues to increase in both domestic and international markets, ensuring the sustainable development of high-quality Astragali Radix is important. In this study, the maximum entropy (Maxent) model was applied, thereby incorporating 136 distribution records, along with 39 environmental factors of A. membranaceus var. mongholicus, to assess the quality zonation and potential distribution of this species in China under climate change. Results The results showed that the elevation, annual mean temperature, precipitation of wettest month, solar radiation in June, and mean temperature of warmest quarter were the critical environmental factors influencing the accumulation of astragaloside IV and Astragalus polysaccharide in A. membranaceus var. mongholicus. Among the twelve main environmental variables, annual mean temperature, elevation, precipitation of the wettest month, and solar radiation in November were the four most important factors influencing the distribution of A. membranaceus var. mongholicus. In addition, ecological niche modelling revealed that highly suitable habitats were mainly located in central and western Gansu, eastern Qinghai, northern Shaanxi, southern Ningxia, central Inner Mongolia, central Shanxi, and northern Hebei. However, the future projections under climate change suggested a contraction of these suitable areas, shifting towards northeastern high-latitude and high-elevation mountains. Conclusions The findings provide essential insights for developing adaptive strategies for A. membranaceus var. mongholicus cultivation in response to climate change and can inform future research on this species. By considering the identified environmental factors and the potential impacts of the predicted climate changes, we can visualize the regional distribution of high-quality Radix Astragali and develop conservation strategies to protect and restore its suitable habitats.

Abstract Background To explore a novel ultrasound (US) modality for lumbar transforaminal epidural injections (TFEIs) in patients with low back pain (LBP) and L5 radicular pain combined with high iliac crest (HIC). Methods One-hundred and forty-one patients were retrospectively stratified into two groups based on the treatment they received: novel group, receiving US-guided and fluoroscopy (FL)-controlled TFEIs using a sagittal oblique approach between the superior articular process of L5 and S1, and control group, receiving US-guided TFEIs with conventional transverse approach combined with FL confirmation. Accuracy of contrast dispersing into lumbar epidural space was set as the primary endpoint. Radiation dosages, procedure time, numeric rating scale (NRS) scores, Modified Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (MODQ) scores, adverse events, and rescue analgesic requirement were also recorded. Abstract The prognoses of patients who undergo open spinal endoscopy (OSE) decompression significantly differ by scoliosis type and symptom despite the use of uniform standards and procedures for the decompression surgery. These differences may be directly related to the selection and formulation of surgical strategies but their cause remains unclear. The aim of this study was to verify and evaluate the efficacy of the "Symptom, Stenosis and Segment classification (SSS classification)" in determining an appropriate surgical strategy and to analyze the differences in the outcomes of different patients after receiving the selected surgical strategy. The results of this study ultimately provide a theoretical basis for the specific optimization of surgical strategies guided by the "SSS classification". This work was a retrospective study. We reviewed 55 patients with scoliosis and spinal stenosis who underwent "pear-shaped" decompression under OSE from May 2021 to June 2023 treated by our surgical team. To classify different types of patients, we defined the "SSS classification" system. The permutation and combination of subtypes in Symptom (including three subtypes: Convex = v, Concave = c and Bilateral = b), Stenosis (including three subtypes: Convex = v, Concave = c and Bilateral = b), and Segment (including two subtypes: Edge = e and Inside = i) yields 18 possible types (details in Table 1) in this classification system. Abstract Microorganisms are essential in the decomposition of corpses and play a significant role in forensic science. However, previous studies have primarily focused on animal remains, specifically the gut, skin, and burial environment. Insufficient research has been conducted on the microbiota of human cadavers, especially in cases of advanced decomposition and additional tissues, resulting in a lack of relevant reference data. In this study, the microbiota of eight cadavers at different stages of decomposition were detected using 16S rRNA, metagenomic sequencing and 2bRAD-M sequencing. Nine different sites, including oral and nasal cavities, heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, muscle and gut, were analysed and the efficacy of these methods was evaluated. The results showed that 16S rRNA sequencing was the most cost-effective method for the study of cadavers in the early stages of decomposition, whereas for cadaveric tissues in the late stages of decomposition, 2bRAD-M could overcome host contamination more effectively than metagenomic sequencing. This paves the way for new opportunities in data retrieval and promotes in-depth investigations into the microbiota.

Walnut cake has the potential for use in preparing wood adhesives because of its richness in protein and carbohydrate. In this work, walnut cakes were treated with sodium periodate or potassium permanganate and then were directly used as wood adhesives. Their bonding properties, curing performances, thermal properties, and chemical structures were compared. The results showed that: (1) The oxidation by KMnO4was non-selective. The reaction was very intense, accompanied by the great variability of oxidation degree and degradation degree, enormous viscosity of oxidation products, high coating difficulty, and low content of active aldehyde groups. (2) The oxidation by NaIO4 was selective; the reaction was mild and easy to control. More active aldehydes could be produced and the treatment was beneficial for constructing a spatial net structure of the adhesive. (3) Compared with oxidation of KMnO4, the walnut cake adhesive prepared by NaIO4 oxidation exhibited a more compact structure, a higher crosslinking degree, low curing temperature, and high thermal stability after curing; its bonding performances met the requirements for Class II plywood specified in GB/T 17657(2013).

Abstract Background To investigate whether the intraoperative superb microvascular imaging(SMI) technique helps evaluate lesion boundaries compared with conventional grayscale ultrasound in brain tumor surgery and to explore factors that may be associated with complete radiographic resection. Methods This study enrolled 57 consecutive brain tumor patients undergoing surgery. During the operation, B-mode and SMI ultrasound evaluated the boundaries of brain tumors. MRI before and within 48h after surgery was used as the gold standard to evaluate gross-total resection(GTR). The ultrasound findings and GTR results were analyzed to determine the imaging factors related to GTR. Results A total of 57 patients were enrolled in the study, including 32 males and 25 females, with an average age of 53.4 ± 14.1 years old(range 19 ~ 80). According to the assessment criteria of MRI, before and within 48 h after the operation, 37(63.9%) cases were classified as GTR, and 20(35.1%) cases were classified as GTR. In comparing tumor interface definition between B-mode and SMI mode, SMI improved HGG boundary recognition in 5 cases(P = 0.033). The mechanical properties of titanium alloys are greatly affected by their microstructural composition, with a complex relationship between strength and plasticity. This study examines the impact of aging treatment on twinning behavior and its consequences on the mechanical characteristics of a hot-rolled Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni-0.5Al-0.5Zr alloy. By analyzing the changes in microstructure, mechanical properties, and crystallographic features during aging, the study reveals that aging results in the formation of lamellar α phases within the matrix grains. This process increases the lamellar α phase and reduces the average grain size with longer aging periods, promoting microstructural changes that enhance twinning and modify grain boundary features. Specifically, there is a decrease in medium angle grain boundaries (MAGBs) and an increase in low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). Tensile tests show that although the tensile strength decreases compared to the hot-rolled alloy, plasticity significantly improves. The twinning behavior induced by aging helps enhance the tensile strength while maintaining ductility as aging progresses. Additionally, the study investigates how grain lattice orientation and aging twinning affect mechanical properties. Grains with high Schmid Factor (SF) values (>0.4) are more likely to activate multiple slip systems, leading to a uniform strain distribution and enhanced ductility. Overall, aging treatment of the Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni-0.5Al-0.5Zr alloy brings about beneficial microstructural changes that improve its mechanical properties, particularly enhancing strength and ductility. This research provides valuable insights into the interplay among microstructure, crystallography, and mechanical performance, essential for advancing and optimizing titanium alloys for various applications.

A new near-α titanium alloy Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni-2Al-1.5Zr was designed based on Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni (TA10). The hot compression tests were carried out at temperatures of 800–970 °C and strain rates of 0.01–5 s−1. The results show that the flow softening phenomenon in the α + β phase region is more distinct than that in the single β phase region. The Arrhenius constitutive models based on strain compensation in the α+β phase region and β phase region were established respectively, and the correlation coefficient between the predicted flow peak stress values and the experimental values reached 0.99365. The hot processing map of the alloy was established, the processing parameters of the peak efficiency: 800 ≤ T ≤ 818 °C, 0.01 ≤ ε˙ ≤ 0.0235 s−1, and 960 ≤ T ≤ 970 °C, 0.01 ≤ ε˙ ≤ 0.0213 s−1. The microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism of the compressed specimens were researched by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. There were two nucleation mechanisms for dynamic recrystallization (DRX): sub-grains growth nucleation and high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) bulging nucleation, the former was continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), and the latter was discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX). The flow stress in the α+β phase region was softened by CDRX and dynamic recovery (DRV), while the principal deformation mechanisms in the β phase region are DRV and DDRX. The dislocation strain energy and recrystallization ability at different temperatures were quantitatively analyzed by the kernel average misorientation (KAM) and the geometrically necessary dislocation (GND), and the results showed that more complete recrystallization occurred at lower temperature in the α + β phase region. The HCP slip was principally completed by prismatic ⟨a⟩ and pyramidal ⟨c+a⟩ slip systems during the hot compression, while BCC was a mixed mode of {110}, {112} and {113} multiple slips.

Abstract Background Diffuse sclerosing variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (DSVPTC) is a rare but high invasive subtype of papillary thyroid carcinoma, which mandates an aggressive clinical strategy. Few studies have focused on the sonographic characteristics of DSVPTC and the role of ultrasound in diagnosis and treatment of this variant remains unknown. This study aimed to identify and understand DSVPTC more accurately under ultrasound in correlation with pathology. Methods The ultrasound characteristics and histopathologic sections of 10 lesions in 10 DSVPTC patients who underwent thyroid surgery at our center between 2014 and 2020 were reviewed and compared with 184 lesions in 168 classic variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (cPTC) patients. Results 6 DSVPTC cases (60%) showed the “snowstorm” pattern on sonogram and 4 cases (40%) presented hypoechoic solid nodules only. Vague borders (100.0% vs. 18.5%, P = 0.019) and abundant microcalcifications (66.7% vs. 10.9%, P = 0.037) were more common in DSVPTC nodules than in cPTC nodules, corresponding to the infiltrating boundaries and numerous psammoma bodies under the microscope respectively. Most of the DSVPTC cases had a heterogeneous background (80%) and suspicious metastatic cervical lymph nodes (80%) on sonograms. All DSVPTC cases had histopathological metastatic cervical lymph nodes. Conclusion The sonographic “snowstorm” pattern indicated DSVPTC with whole-lobe occupation. Hypoechoic solid nodules with vague borders and abundant microcalcifications on sonogram suggested DSVPTC lesion with an ongoing invasion. Regardless of which of the two sonograms was shown, the corresponding DSVPTC lesions were aggressive and required the same attention from the surgeons.

Abstract Dazomet is a dry powder formulation that releases toxic gas containing methyl isothiocyanate, which controls soil-borne pests and weeds, improving crop yields when applied to moist soils. To explore the efficacy of dazomet fumigation in the cultivation of the perennial herb Codonopsis pilosula, four typical cultivars (G1, G2, W1 and TCK) in Gansu Province were selected for seedling cultivation after soil fumigation (F) by dazomet, and non-fumigated soil was used as a control (CK). The experiments took 2 years to complete. The functional diversity of the soil enzymes and microorganisms, seedling emergence and physiological characteristics, and the quality and yield of Codonopsis seedlings and Radix were assessed. The results showed that the seed emergence rate, seedling re-green rate and several antioxidant enzymatic activities improved in the treatments involving soil fumigation with dazomet, and membrane lipid peroxidation in the seedlings decreased. On average, compared with those of the respective controls, the root viability and yield of the seedlings of the tested cultivars also increased by 34.87% and 42.4%, respectively, and the incidence of root rot in the seedlings was reduced by 83.9%, compared with their respective controls. After harvest, the yield increased by 23.9%, the incidence of root rot decreased by 61.3%, increase in yield and a 61.3% reduction in incidence, and the medicinal materials were determined to be safe and residue-free. The effects of fumigation were cultivar-specific and were especially prominent in G2. Therefore, soil fumigation with dazomet could improve the quality and productivity of Codonopsis pilosula seedlings. Taken together, these findings suggest that when herbs are bred by seedling transplantation, especially cultivars of good quality but poor resistance or species with rare germplasm resources, soil fumigation provides a way to improve cultivation effectiveness and, more importantly, ensures the probability of successfully breeding the species.

ADP ribosylation factor-like GTPase 2 (Arl2) is crucial for controlling mitochondrial fusion and microtubule assembly in various organisms. Arl2 regulates the asymmetric division of neural stem cells in Drosophila via microtubule growth. However, the function of mammalian Arl2 during cortical development was unknown. Here, we demonstrate that mouse Arl2 plays a new role in corticogenesis via regulating microtubule growth, but not mitochondria functions. Arl2 knockdown (KD) leads to impaired proliferation of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) and neuronal migration. Arl2 KD in mouse NPCs significantly diminishes centrosomal microtubule growth and delocalization of centrosomal proteins Cdk5rap2 and γ-tubulin. Moreover, Arl2 physically associates with Cdk5rap2 by in silico prediction using AlphaFold multimer, which was validated by co-immunoprecipitation and proximity ligation assay. Remarkably, Cdk5rap2 overexpression significantly rescues the neurogenesis defects caused by Arl2 KD. Therefore, Arl2 plays an important role in mouse cortical development through microtubule growth via the centrosomal protein Cdk5rap2.

The EIN3/EIL gene family holds a pivotal role as it encodes a crucial transcription factor in plants. During the process of polyploidization in broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), there is an intriguing above-average amplification observed within the EIN3/EIL gene family. Nonetheless, our current knowledge of this gene family in broomcorn millet remains limited. Hence, in this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the EIN3/EIL gene family in broomcorn millet, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of the potential evolutionary changes. Additionally, we analyzed the EIN3/EIL gene family of Panicum hallii L., a close relative of broomcorn millet, to enhance our characterization efforts. Within this study, we identified a total of 15 EIN3/EIL genes specific to broomcorn millet. Through covariance analysis, it was revealed that all PmEIL genes, except PmEIL1 and PmEIL15, had duplicate copies generated through genome-wide duplication events. Importantly, the Ka/Ks values of all duplicated genes were found to be less than 1, indicating strong purifying selection. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these genes could be categorized into four distinct evolutionary branches, showcasing similar characteristics among members within the same branch. However, there appeared to be an uneven distribution of cis-acting elements amid the EIN3/EIL genes. Further examination of transcriptomic data shed light on the diverse spatiotemporal and stress-related expression patterns exhibited by the EIN3/EIL genes in broomcorn millet. Notably, under cold stress, the expression of PmEIL3/4/8/14 was significantly up-regulated, while under drought stress, PmEIL4/5/6 displayed significant up-regulation. Intriguingly, the expression pattern of PmEIL15 showed an opposite pattern in resistant and sensitive cultivars. The findings of this study augment our understanding of the EIN3/EIL gene family in broomcorn millet and offer a valuable reference for future investigations into polyploid studies. Moreover, this study establishes a theoretical foundation for further exploration of the ethylene signaling pathway in broomcorn millet.

IntroductionThe quality of traditional Chinese medicine is based on the content of their secondary metabolites, which vary with habitat adaptation and ecological factors. This study focuses on Lonicera japonica Flos (LJF), a key traditional herbal medicine, and aims to evaluate how ecological factors impact its quality.MethodsWe developed a new evaluation method combining high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprinting technology and MaxEnt models to assess the effects of ecological factors on LJF quality. The MaxEnt model was used to predict suitable habitats for current and future scenarios, while HPLC was employed to analyze the contents of key compounds. We also used ArcGIS for spatial analysis to create a quality zoning map.ResultsThe analysis identified 21 common chromatographic peaks, with significant variations in the contents of Hyperoside, Rutin, Chlorogenic acid, Cynaroside, and Isochlorogenic acid A across different habitats. Key environmental variables influencing LJF distribution were identified, including temperature, precipitation, and elevation. The current suitable habitats primarily include regions south of the Yangtze River. Under future climate scenarios, suitable areas are expected to shift, with notable expansions in southern Gansu, southeastern Tibet, and southern Liaoning. The spatial distribution maps revealed that high-quality LJF is predominantly found in central and southern Hebei, northern Henan, central Shandong, central Sichuan, southern Guangdong, and Taiwan.DiscussionThe study indicates that suitable growth areas can promote the accumulation of certain secondary metabolites in plants, as the accumulation of these metabolites varies. The results underscore the necessity of optimizing quality based on cultivation practices. The integration of HPLC fingerprinting technology and the MaxEnt model provides valuable insights for the conservation and cultivation of herbal resources, offering a new perspective on evaluating the impact of ecological factors on the quality of traditional Chinese medicines.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is the primary risk factor for the progress of gastric diseases. The persistent stomach colonization of H. pylori is closely associated with the development of gastritis and malignancies. Although the involvement of progranulin (PGRN) in various cancer types has been well-documented, its functional role and underlying mechanisms in gastric cancer (GC) associated with H. pylori infection remain largely unknown. This report demonstrated that PGRN was up-regulated in GC and associated with poor prognosis, as determined through local and public database analysis. Additionally, H. pylori induced the up-regulation of PGRN in gastric epithelial cells both in vitro and in vivo. Functional studies have shown that PGRN promoted the intracellular colonization of H. pylori. Mechanistically, H. pylori infection induced autophagy, while PGRN inhibited autophagy to promote the intracellular colonization of H. pylori. Furthermore, PGRN suppressed H. pylori-induced autophagy by down-regulating decorin (DCN) through the mTOR pathway. In general, PGRN inhibited autophagy to facilitate intracellular colonization of H. pylori via the PGRN/mTOR/DCN axis. This study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the progression of gastric diseases, suggesting PGRN as a potential therapeutic target and prognostic predictor for these disorders.

Summary: Aging-related cardiac fibrosis represents the principal pathological progression in cardiovascular aging. The Muscleblind-like splicing regulator 2 (MBNL2) has been unequivocally established as being associated with cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, its role in aging-related cardiac fibrosis remains unexplored. This investigation revealed an elevation of MBNL2 levels in the aged heart and senescent cardiac fibroblasts. Notably, the inhibition of MBNL2 demonstrated a capacity to mitigate H2O2-induced myofibroblast transformation and aging-related cardiac fibrosis. Further mechanistic exploration unveiled that aging heightened the expression of SENP1 and impeded the SUMO1 binding with KLF4, and SUMOylation of KLF4 effectively increased by the inhibition of MBNL2. Additionally, the inhibition of TGF-β1/SMAD3 signaling attenuated the impact of over-expression of MBNL2 in inducing senescence and cardiac fibrosis. MBNL2, by orchestrating SUMOylation of KLF4, upregulating the TGF-β1/SMAD3 signaling pathway, emerges as a significant promoter of aging-related cardiac fibrosis. This discovery identifies a novel regulatory target for managing aging-related cardiac fibrosis.

In this study, a large size Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni (TA10) alloy ingot melted by electron beam cold hearth melting (EBCHM) technology was investigated. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior of as-cast, hot-rolled, and annealed TA10 alloys were investigated. The results show that different states of TA10 alloys have different microstructure and properties. The microstructure of the as-cast TA10 alloy exhibits the Widmanstätten α phase, and the hot-rolled TA10 sheet shows a fibrous structure with an obvious rolling streamline. After 650 °C annealing, the intergranular β phase decreases, and most of the strip α phase changes to the equiaxed α phase. With the annealing temperature increasing to 840 °C, the microstructure gradually changed from an equiaxed structure to a duplex structure. The mechanical properties of the TA10 alloy were enhanced after hot-rolling with an increase in ultimate tensile strength from 386.5 MPa to 610 MPa. Additionally, the elongation increased from 15.6 % to 23.3 %. Upon annealing at varying temperatures, it was observed that the strength decreased, reaching to 423.5 MPa at 650 °C and 478.2 MPa at 840 °C, while the plasticity increased significantly, reaching to 26.5 % at 650 °C and 28.6 % at 840 °C. The improved strength was attributed to the better grain boundary slip of the equiaxed structure. The corrosion resistance of titanium alloys is closely connected with their microstructure. The results of the immersion corrosion test indicate that the samples in various states exhibit similar corrosion behavior. Additionally, the hot-rolled TA10 alloy shows the highest corrosion resistance, with a lower corrosion rate of 0.34459 mm/year. The as-cast TA10 alloy shows the lowest corrosion resistance, with a lower corrosion rate of 1.37559 mm/year.

Abstract Chinese sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) is a highly sought-after commercial seafood species in Asian regions due to its excellent nutritional value. With the rapid advancement of bioinformatics, higher standards for genome analysis compared to previously published reference genomes are now necessary. This study presents a gapless assembly of the Chinese sea bass genome, which has a length of 632.75 Mb. The sequences were assembled onto 24 chromosomes with a coverage of over 99% (626.61 Mb), and telomeres were detected on 34 chromosome ends. Analysis using Merqury indicated a high level of accuracy, with an average consensus quality value of 54.25. The ONT ultralong and PacBio HiFi data were aligned with the assembly using minimap2, resulting in a mapping rate of 99.9%. The study also identified repeating elements in 20.90% (132.25 Mb) of the genome and inferred 22,014 protein-coding genes. These results establish meaningful groundwork for exploring the evolution of the Chinese sea bass genome and advancing molecular breeding techniques.

Blockchain technology has attracted widespread attention due to its advantages of decentralization, as well as non-tampering, transparency, and traceability of information. Fourth-party logistics systems that do not use blockchain incur transaction costs and service quality losses due to the inability to fully control the delivery process, whereas the use of blockchain eliminates the transaction costs and quality losses, but the use of blockchain needs implementation and marginal use costs. To study the conditions for the use of blockchain technology, consider the fourth-party logistics system does not use and uses blockchain technology, and the equilibrium strategies in the two cases are compared. Numerical experiments show that there exists a certain range of blockchain costs which leads to a Pareto improvement in profits for both fourth-party logistics and third-party logistics and an improvement in the quality of logistics services when using blockchain.

Our previous study has demonstrated that lnc_000048 is upregulated in large-artery atherosclerotic stroke and promotes atherosclerosis in ApoE–/– mice. However, little is known about the role of lnc_000048 in classically activated macrophage (M1) polarization. In this study, we established THP-1-derived testing state macrophages (M0), M1 macrophages, and alternately activated macrophages (M2). Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR was used to verify the expression of marker genes and the expression of lnc_000048 in macrophages. Flow cytometry was used to detect phenotypic proteins (CD11b, CD38, CD80). We generated cell lines with lentivirus-mediated upregulation or downregulation of lnc_000048. Flow cytometry, western blot, and real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR results showed that down-regulation of lnc_000048 reduced M1 macrophage polarization and the inflammation response, while over-expression of lnc_000048 led to the opposite effect. Western blot results indicated that lnc_000048 enhanced the activation of the STAT1 pathway and mediated the M1 macrophage polarization. Moreover, catRAPID prediction, RNA-pull down, and mass spectrometry were used to identify and screen the protein kinase RNA-activated (PKR), then catRAPID and RPIseq were used to predict the binding ability of lnc_000048 to PKR. Immunofluorescence (IF)-RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) double labeling was performed to verify the subcellular colocalization of lnc_000048 and PKR in the cytoplasm of M1 macrophage. We speculate that lnc_000048 may form stem-loop structure-specific binding and activate PKR by inducing its phosphorylation, leading to activation of STAT1 phosphorylation and thereby enhancing STAT1 pathway-mediated polarization of THP-1 macrophages to M1 and inflammatory factor expression. Taken together, these results reveal that the lnc_000048/PKR/STAT1 axis plays a crucial role in the polarization of M1 macrophages and may be a novel therapeutic target for atherosclerosis alleviation in stroke.

Abstract Purpose Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) represents the uncommon, benign and chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the mesenteric adipose tissues. Its etiology, diagnosis and treatment remain unnoticed. Our report focused on shedding more lights on this condition. Patients and methods Seventeen MP patients were identified by searching the electronic medical record system in the Zhengzhou Ninth People’s Hospital using the search terms “Mesenteric panniculitis” from October 2015 to March 2023. All cases were diagnosed with MP through computed tomography (CT). Their clinical features and treatments were analyzed. Results There were altogether 17 cases enrolled for this analysis. The male to female ratio was 8:9, and the median age at diagnosis was 64 (range: 37–96) years. There were 15 patients (88.2%) showing abdominal pain to varying degrees. The proportions of symptoms of nausea, vomiting and fever were 23.5%, 23.5% and 41.2%, respectively. Neoplastic disease was present in 3 patients (17.6%). Meanwhile, 9 patients (52.9%) had gallstones, 3 (17.6%) had cholecystitis and 1 (5.9%) had gallbladder polyps. Six patients (35.3%) received antibiotics treatment only and 1 (5.9%) received oral antibiotics and prednisone. One patient (5.9%) received antibiotics followed by prednisone treatment, because the symptoms were significantly relieved after antibiotic treatment, while the disease recurred soon after, and the symptoms improved again after prednisone treatment. The abdominal pain in 9 patients (52.9%) was relieved spontaneously. Two patients (11.8%) died, including one due to respiratory failure caused by pneumonia and the other one because of pancreatic cancer with lung and liver metastases. Conclusion MP is a poorly understood chronic inflammatory disease. Patients often have abdominal pain as the main symptom, accompanied by comorbidities in the gallbladder, and the prognosis is usually good after correct diagnosis and treatment, Therefore, the present report aims to promote the awareness among clinicians of patients with non-classic abdominal symptoms, so as to avoid misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis.

Abstract Background Vascular features are not commonly used to evaluate thyroid nodules by conventional ultrasound due to the low sensitivity. Superb Microvascular Imaging (SMI) is a new ultrasonic Doppler technology that specializes in depicting microvessels and low-speed flow. The objective of this study was to explore the value of microflow features on SMI in differentiating malignant from benign thyroid nodules. Methods One hundred and seventy-seven adult patients with thyroid nodules in our center from October 2021 to June 2022 with available histopathological results were recruited, including 125 malignant nodules and 123 benign nodules. Preoperative ultrasound was performed using greyscale, Color Doppler Flow Imaging (CDFI), monochrome SMI (mSMI) and color SMI (cSMI). In many parts of the globe, agricultural soil degradation and nutrient loss both contribute to the decline of soil quality. The utilization of various organic sources has provided meaningful trends in sustainable agriculture. The research was carried out to examine how biochar (B) and pig manure (PM) affected soil chemical properties as well as the growth and yield of maize for two years. A randomized complete block design was adopted with three replications. The soil was amended with biochar and pig manure at two rates (15 and 30 t ha-1): biochar (B15 and B30), pig manure (PM15 and PM30), biochar with pig manure (BPM15 and BPM30), respectively, and control (CK). The incorporation of biochar and pig manure together at 15 and 30 t ha-1 improved soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN) and available phosphorus (AP) compared to control. Individual use of pig manure at 15 and 30 t ha-1 significantly decreased compared to its combination in SOC, TN and AP. The combined use of biochar and pig manure at 15 t ha-1 significantly increased compared to the lone addition of biochar in SOC, TN and AP. The application of organic amendments significantly increased plant height, dry matter yield, and grain yield in both years. The relationship pattern was measured between soil properties and agronomic characteristics. The use of biochar and pig manure separately or together offers strong potential to improve soil fertility and increase crop productivity in soils.

With the emergence of supercapacitors (SCs), the creation of bio-based electrode materials has grown in significance for the advancement of energy storage. However, it is particularly difficult for cathode materials to meet the demands of practical uses due to their low energy density. Herein, MIL-88 was fabricated in situ on the surface of cotton fibers used in cosmetics, followed by creating Fe2N@porous carbon fiber composite (Fe2N@PCF) through heat treatment at various temperatures. Fe2N@PCF-800 demonstrates excellent specific capacitance performance (552 F g−1 at 1 A g−1). Meanwhile, The AC//Fe2N@PCF-800 device exhibits the largest energy density of 38 Wh kg−1 at 800 W kg−1 and a long cycling stability (83.3% capacity retention after 6000 cycles). Our elaborately designed Fe2N@PCF demonstrate multiple advantages: i) the Fe2N@PCF-800 shows abundant mesopores, providing abundant ion-diffusion pathways for mass transport and rich graphite microstructures, improving electrical conductivity for electron transferowning; ii) the rich nitrogen dopants and Fe2N structure within all carbon components increase the capacitance through their pseudocapacitive contribution. These findings highlight the importance of biomass derived carbon materials for SCs applications.

Aim: To analyze the clinical phenotype and genetic etiology of three cases of glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA1) in Chinese children. Methods: We performed genetic and metabolic testing using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS), followed by trio whole-exome sequencing (trio-WES) and Sanger sequencing. A literature review on glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA1) in Chinese patients was also conducted. Results: Sequencing results showed each case had compound heterozygous variants in GCDH(NM_000159.4): c.214C > G (p.Arg72Gly) and c.411C > G (p.Tyr137Term) (Case 1), c.214C > G (p.Arg72Gly) and c.1204C > T (p.Arg402Trp) (Case 2), and c.1228G > T (p.Val410Leu) and c.395G > A (p.Arg132Gln) (Case 3). These variants were inherited from their respective parents. Notably, the c.214C > G variant found in two children was a novel variant not previously reported. A review of the literature revealed that, clinically, the majority of patients experienced onset in infancy and early childhood (82%). Additionally, 38.36% were diagnosed through newborn screening, with the primary reasons for the initial visit being delayed development (32.43%) and infections (21.61%). The most common clinical manifestations included increased head circumference (77.19%) and motor developmental delay (65.15%). Biochemically, patients exhibited significant elevations in C5DC (98.51%) and C5DC/C8 (94.87%) in blood, as well as GA (94.37%) and 3OHGA (69.39%) in urine. Radiographically, patients showed a high prevalence of abnormalities in cranial MRI (86.15%) and EEG (73.33%). Genetically, 67 distinct GCDH gene variants were identified among 73 patients, with missense variants being the most prevalent type (73.97%). The most frequent variant was c.1244-2 A > C, observed in 17.12% of cases. Additionally, the majority of variant sites were located in exons 11 (25.37%) and 6 (22.39%). Conclusion: GCDH variants were identified as the causative factors in the three children. The discovery of the novel variant (c.214C > G) expands the spectrum of pathogenic GCDH variants. These findings facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of affected children and provide a basis for genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis for their families.

Abstract According to the latest evidence, the microbial metabolite Urolithin A (UA), known for its role in promoting cellular health, modulates CD8+ T cell‐mediated antitumor activity. However, the direct target protein of UA and its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, this research identifies ERK1/2 as the specific target crucial for UA‐mediated CD8+ T cell activation. Even at low doses, UA markedly enhances the persistence and effector functions of primary CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and human chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, UA interacts directly with ERK1/2 kinases, enhancing their activation and subsequently facilitating T cell activation by engaging ULK1. The UA‐ERK1/2‐ULK1 axis promotes autophagic flux in CD8+ CTLs, enhancing cellular metabolism and maintaining reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, as evidenced by increased oxygen consumption and extracellular acidification rates. UA‐treated CD8+ CTLs also display elevated ATP levels and enhanced spare respiratory capacity. Overall, UA activates ERK1/2, inducing autophagy and metabolic adaptation, showcasing its potential in tumor immunotherapy and interventions for diseases involving ERKs.

Despite recent advancements in using machine learning (ML) techniques to establish the microstructure-property linkage for composites’ representative volume elements (RVEs), challenges persist in effectively characterising the effect of microstructural randomness on material properties. This complexity arises from the difficulty of expressing randomness as definitive variables and its intertwined relations with other factors, such as material constituents. Such complexities result in limitations in generalising ML models across different material constituents. Conventional solutions to these challenges usually necessitate large datasets, which require considerable computational resources, for an accurate and generalisable ML models to be trained. This paper presents an innovative approach to tackling these challenges by integrating a high-accuracy convolutional neural network (CNN) with a novel microstructure-factored constitutive model (MCM). The MCM, rooted from classic empirical constitutive modelling, effectively segregates the microstructural and constituting material effects, extending the generalisability and thus significantly enhancing the efficacy of the CNN. This new approach enabled a CNN trained on the transverse stress-strain curves of one set of material constituents (CF/PEEK at 270 °C) to be generalised for the rapid prediction of various sets of material constituents at different temperatures, unseen by the CNN during training, with an average mean absolute percentage error around 3 %.

Objective We investigated the efficacy of a combination of laparoscopy and bilateral uterine artery occlusion (BUAO) for the treatment of type II cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP). Methods Patients with type II CSP underwent laparoscopy + bilateral uterine artery embolization (control group) or laparoscopy + BUAO (study group). Data regarding the duration of surgery, intraoperative hemorrhage, postoperative complications, the duration of the hospital stay, and the costs of hospitalization were retrospectively collected. One year later, the time to the return of the β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) concentration to normal and to the return of menstruation were compared. Results The duration of surgery, time to the return of menstruation, and incidence of postoperative complications in the study group were significantly less than in the control group, but there was no significant difference in the time for β-hCG to return to normal or the volume of intraoperative hemorrhage. The duration of hospitalization and costs for the control group were higher than those for the study group. Conclusion Laparoscopy in combination with BUAO is associated with minimal trauma, rapid recovery, a short duration of surgery, low cost of hospitalization, and a low postoperative complication rate. Thus, it represents a useful new surgical treatment for type II CSP.

Introduction Urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the most common chronic diseases among women, which can endanger their physical and mental health and incur a heavy financial burden on both individuals and society. Web-based interventions (WBIs) have been applied to manage women’s UI, but their effectiveness has remained inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to explore the effectiveness of WBIs on self-reported symptom severity, condition-specific quality of life, adherence to pelvic floor muscle training (primary outcomes) and other extensive secondary outcomes among women with UI. We also aimed to investigate whether intervention characteristics (format, interactivity and main technology) have impacts on the effectiveness of primary outcomes.Methods and analysis This systematic review protocol was developed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols guidelines. 10 electronic databases will be comprehensively searched from their inception to 1 May 2024, along with grey literature searches and manual reviews of relevant reference lists to identify eligible randomised controlled trials. The methodological quality of the included studies will be assessed by two reviewers based on the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. Meta-analyses will be conducted via Stata V.12.0. Leave-one-out sensitivity analyses will be performed, and publication bias will be evaluated using funnel plots and Egger’s test. Subgroup analyses regarding intervention format, interactivity and main technology will be carried out.Ethics and dissemination No ethics approval is needed for this review since no primary data are to be collected. The results of this review will help develop an optimal WBI for women with UI, thereby providing them with maximum benefits. Graphene oxide (GO)/polyaniline (PANI) layer was formed on the surface of the natural material bamboo powder (BP) by an interfacial polymerization process. The combination of GO and PANI improves the impedance mismatch of the conductive polymer PANI. Enhanced dielectric storage and loss capability of the composite GO/PANI/BP. The addition of BP brings more electromagnetic wave loss channels to the composite GO/PANI/BP. Abstract Background Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most widely cultivated grain crops in the world that meets the caloric needs of more than half the world’s population. Salt stress seriously affects rice production and threatens food security. Therefore, mining salt tolerance genes in salt-tolerant germplasm and elucidating their molecular mechanisms in rice are necessary for the breeding of salt tolerant cultivars. Results In this study, a salt stress-responsive jacalin-related lectin (JRL) family gene, OsJRL45, was identified in the salt-tolerant rice variety ‘sea rice 86’ (SR86). OsJRL45 showed high expression level in leaves, and the corresponding protein mainly localized to the endoplasmic reticulum. The knockout mutant and overexpression lines of OsJRL45 revealed that OsJRL45 positively regulates the salt tolerance of rice plants at all growth stages. Compared with the wild type (WT), the OsJRL45 overexpression lines showed greater salt tolerance at the reproductive stage, and significantly higher seed setting rate and 1,000-grain weight. Moreover, OsJRL45 expression significantly improved the salt-resistant ability and yield of a salt-sensitive indica cultivar, L6-23. Furthermore, OsJRL45 enhanced the antioxidant capacity of rice plants and facilitated the maintenance of Na+-K+ homeostasis under salt stress conditions. Five proteins associated with OsJRL45 were screened by transcriptome and interaction network analysis, of which one, the transmembrane transporter Os10g0210500 affects the salt tolerance of rice by regulating ion transport-, salt stress-, and hormone-responsive proteins. Conclusions The OsJRL45 gene isolated from SR86 positively regulated the salt tolerance of rice plants at all growth stages, and significantly increased the yield of salt-sensitive rice cultivar under NaCl treatment. OsJRL45 increased the activity of antioxidant enzyme of rice and regulated Na+/K+ dynamic equilibrium under salinity conditions. Our data suggest that OsJRL45 may improve the salt tolerance of rice by mediating the expression of ion transport-, salt stress response-, and hormone response-related genes.

This paper is concerned with a population model with prey refuge and a Holling type Ⅲ functional response in the presence of self-diffusion and cross-diffusion, and its Turing pattern formation problem of Hopf bifurcating periodic solutions was studied. First, we discussed the stability of periodic solutions for the ordinary differential equation model, and derived the first derivative formula of periodic functions for the perturbed model. Second, applying the Floquet theory, we gave the conditions of Turing patterns occurring at Hopf bifurcating periodic solutions. Additionally, we determined the range of cross-diffusion coefficients for the diffusive population model to form Turing patterns at the stable periodic solutions. Finally, our research was summarized and the relevant conclusions were simulated numerically.

Abstract Background Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are prevalent and distressing concerns for women worldwide. The prevalence of LUTS reaches the first peak during pregnancy and postnatal period. However, less attention has been paid to LUTS around childbirth and little progress has been made in the prevention of LUTS. Understanding the epidemiological characteristics of LUTS around childbirth would inform decision making for health care providers and perinatal women in the prevention of LUTS. The study aims to investigate the epidemiological trends and associated risk factors related to LUTS around childbirth. Methods Pregnant women were consecutively enrolled during pregnancy in the obstetrical wards of a tertiary hospital and followed up at 6–8 weeks and one year postpartum through a prospective design. Urinary incontinence was assessed with the International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form. Other symptoms were measured with questions based on definitions of the International Incontinence Society. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine the risk factors for LUTS including urinary incontinence, increased daytime frequency, nocturia and urgency. The report followed the STROBE statement. Results A total of 1243 pregnant women participated in this study. The prevalence of at least one type of storage symptoms was 94%, 55% and 35% in late pregnancy, at 6–8 weeks and one year postpartum, respectively. The prevalence of urinary incontinence remained at 21% within one year postpartum. The majority of the participants suffered from mild to moderate urinary incontinence. Age, job, BMI before pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, urinary tract infection history, previous history of LUTS, age at first birth and birth mode were predictors of LUTS one year postpartum. Conclusion LUTS were highly prevalent during pregnancy and postnatal period. The prevalence of urinary incontinence was more stable than that of other LUTS within one year postpartum. Women aged more than 35 years, engaging in manual work, with gestational diabetes mellitus, with a history of urinary tract infection and LUTS, with advanced age at first birth and vaginal delivery were more likely to suffer from LUTS postpartum. The findings provided a novel and deep insight into the epidemiological trends and related risk factors of LUTS around childbirth.

Abstract Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by core symptoms that consist of social deficits and repetitive behaviors. Unfortunately, no effective medication is available thus far to target the core symptoms of ASD, since the pathogenesis remains largely unknown. To investigate the pathogenesis of the core symptoms in ASD, we constructed Shank1 P1812L-knock-in (KI) mice corresponding to a recurrent ASD-related mutation, SHANK1 P1806L, to achieve construct validity and face validity. Shank1 P1812L-KI heterozygous (HET) mice presented with social deficits and repetitive behaviors without the presence of confounding comorbidities. HET mice also exhibited downregulation of metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR1) and associated signals, along with structural abnormalities in the dendritic spines and postsynaptic densities. Combined with findings from Shank1 R882H-KI mice, our study confirms that mGluR1-mediated signaling dysfunction is a pivotal mechanism underlying the core symptoms of ASD. Interestingly, Shank1 P1812L-KI homozygous (HOM) mice manifested behavioral signs of impaired long-term memory rather than autistic-like core traits; thus, their phenotype was markedly different from that of Shank1 P1812L-KI HET mice. Correspondingly, at the molecular level, Shank1 P1812L-KI HOM displayed upregulation of AMPA receptor (GluA2)-related signals. The different patterns of protein changes in HOM and HET mice may explain the differences in behaviors. Our study emphasizes the universality of mGluR1-signaling hypofunction in the pathogenesis of the core symptoms in ASD, providing a potential target for therapeutic drugs. The precise correspondence between genotype and phenotype, as shown in HOM and HET mice, indicates the importance of reproducing disease-related genotypes in mouse models.

Abstract The aim of this study was to validate the performance of the Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data Systems (O-RADS) series models proposed by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in the preoperative diagnosis of adnexal masses (AMs). Two experienced sonologists examined 218 patients with AMs and gave the assessment results after the examination. Pathological findings were used as a reference standard. Of the 218 lesions, 166 were benign and 52 were malignant. Based on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, we defined a malignant lesion as O-RADS > 3 (i.e., lesions in O-RADS categories 4 and 5 were malignant). The area under the curve (AUC) of O-RADS (v2022) was 0.970 (95% CI 0.938–0.988), which wasn’t statistically significantly different from the O-RADS (v1) combined Simple Rules Risk (SRR) assessment model with the largest AUC of 0.976 (95% CI 0.946–0.992) (p = 0.1534), but was significantly higher than the O-RADS (v1) (AUC = 0.959, p = 0.0133) and subjective assessment (AUC = 0.918, p = 0.0255). The O-RADS series models have good diagnostic performance for AMs. Where, O-RADS (v2022) has higher accuracy and specificity than O-RADS (v1). The accuracy and specificity of O-RADS (v1), however, can be further improved when combined with SRR assessment.

Abstract Due to the tolerance of mismatches between gRNA and targeting sequence, base editors frequently induce unwanted Cas9-dependent off-target mutations. Here, to develop models to predict such off-targets, we design gRNA-off- target pairs for adenine base editors (ABEs) and cytosine base editors (CBEs) and stably integrate them into the human cells. After five days of editing, we obtain valid efficiency datasets of 54,663 and 55,727 off-targets for ABEs and CBEs, respectively. We use the datasets to train deep learning models, resulting in ABEdeepoff and CBEdeepoff, which can predict off-target sites. We use these tools to predict off-targets for a panel of endogenous loci and achieve Spearman correlation values varying from 0.710 to 0.859. Finally, we develop an integrated tool that is freely accessible via an online web server http://www.deephf.com/#/bedeep/bedeepoff . These tools could facilitate minimizing the off-target effects of base editing.

(1) Background: In-stent Restenosis (ISR) is a major factor influencing the prognosis and revascularization of target lesions. The plaque composition is unclear; therefore, it is critical to investigate ISR composition to identify clinical intervention markers. (2) Methods: This study was conducted on 36 patients with drug-eluting stent restenosis. The patients were classified into a Low Neutrophil–Lymphocyte Ratio (L-NLR) and High Neutrophil–Lymphocyte Ratio (H-NLR) according to the median NLR level of 36 patients. Discrepancies in the current information such as baseline data, biochemical examination, cardiac ultrasound data, etc., were examined to identify the underlying risk factors, and a multifactorial linear regression analysis of plaque properties was conducted. (3) Results: NLR = 2.64 was utilized to classify 18 patients into the L-NLR group and 18 patients into the H-NLR group. There were statistically significant differences in age, a pre-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) SYNTAX II score, a C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, plaque loading, a fibro-lipid tissue area, calcified nubs, and virtual histology-thin fibrous cap atherosclerotic (VH-TCFA). The significant impacts of variations in age, neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) levels, and IL-6 levels on the plaque stress and percentage of the fibro-lipid tissue in virtual histology-intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) were identified through multifactorial linear regression. (4) Conclusions: The high NLR group demonstrated increased myocardial injury severity, consistent with higher SYNTAX II scores, a higher plaque burden, and higher proportions of vulnerable components. NLR proved to be a risk factor for both the plaque load and the proportion of the fibro-lipid tissue in ISR.

Concrete materials are widely used in engineering projects, with fine aggregates (sand) being a key component currently in short supply. Copper tailings sand, a waste by-product of copper mining, accumulates in large quantities in tailings dams. Recycling and reusing this waste sand is crucial for environmental sustainability. This paper investigated the incorporation of copper tailings sand into concrete as a partial replacement for fine aggregates and evaluated its effects on concrete’s workability and mechanical properties. The experimental results indicate that the addition of copper tailings sand reduced the workability and compressive strength of concrete. Specifically, at a 60% substitution rate, the slump of the concrete was reduced by 15%, and the axial strength was closest to that of ordinary concrete, with a reduction of 2.5%. As the proportion of copper tailings sand increased from 0% to 80%, the average axial strength decreased from 37.3 MPa to 34.9 MPa, and stiffness decreased by approximately 6.43%. A complete stress–strain curve equation was proposed based on fitting relevant parameters, closely aligning with experimental data. Moderately adding tailings sand can help address the issue of large amounts of waste sand accumulating in tailings dams while maintaining acceptable concrete properties.

Because of the flanges on T-shaped shear walls (TSSWs), the shear force acting on such walls results in a shear lag effect, making it impossible to forecast with accuracy the normal stresses of the flanges using the Bernoulli–Euler assumption. Shear lag (SL) in flanged walls has, however, received less attention from researchers, particularly in experimental studies. Understanding the SL in T-shaped reinforced concrete shear walls under shear and axial force is the main goal of this work. First, a SL model is suggested for TSSWs. In this model, the SL deflection is considered to be the generalized displacement and the SL warping deformation, and it is assumed to be a quadratic nonlinear function. Then, experimental and numerical simulation studies are, respectively, conducted to investigate SL effect of TSSWs, and also to evaluate the accuracy of the SL method. Finally, the parameter analysis is conducted to investigate the influence of axial load, shear force, and flange length on the SL effect of TSSWs. The results show that the SL of the TSSW is significant, the normal stress distribution (NSD) of the flange is uneven, and the normal stresses near the web are higher, according to the results of the analytical, simulated, and experimental results. The SL model can accurately predict the normal stresses of the flange of TSSWs, and the quadratic parabola assumption of the SL warp displacement of TSSWs is reasonable. Parameter analysis shows that axial force has little effect on the SL effect of TSSWs. The TSSWs under larger shear force have the more obvious SL effect. A more obvious SL effect occurs in the TSSWs with longer flanges.

Proteasome 26S Subunit, Non-ATPase 9 (psmd9) plays an important role in the balance of protamine and the stability of the nucleolar structure during spermatogenesis. In this study, we cloned the psmd9 of Cynoglossus semilaevis and analyzed its expression pattern. psmd9 was identified on the Z chromosome of C. semilaevis, which is considered an interesting candidate gene for spermatogenesis. qRT-PCR and FISH experiments showed that the psmd9 gene was significantly highly expressed in the testes. It is worth noting that the expression level of psmd9 in male fish testes is significantly higher than that in pseudomales. In order to further explore the role of psmd9 in spermatogenesis, a male testicular cell line was used as the experimental material. The results of the psmd9-RNAi and overexpression experiments showed that psmd9 had a synergistic effect with spermatogenesis-related genes dnd1, cfap69, dnah3 and dnajb13, but had an antagonistic effect with ccne2. Our findings offer a scientific foundation for comprehending the role of psmd9 in the spermatogenesis regulatory network of C. semilaevis.

The NDPK gene family is an important group of genes in plants, playing a crucial role in regulating energy metabolism, growth, and differentiation, cell signal transduction, and response to abiotic stress. However, our understanding of the NDPK gene family in Brassica napus L. remains limited. This paper systematically analyzes the NDPK gene family in B. napus, particularly focusing on the evolutionary differences within the species. In this study, sixteen, nine, and eight NDPK genes were identified in B. napus and its diploid ancestors, respectively. These genes are not only homologous but also highly similar in their chromosomal locations. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the identified NDPK proteins were divided into four clades, each containing unique motif sequences, with most NDPKs experiencing a loss of introns/exons during evolution. Collinearity analysis revealed that the NDPK genes underwent whole-genome duplication (WGD) events, resulting in duplicate copies, and most of these duplicate genes were subjected to purifying selection. Cis-acting element analysis identified in the promoters of most NDPK genes elements related to a light response, methyl jasmonate response, and abscisic acid response, especially with an increased number of abscisic acid response elements in B. napus. RNA-Seq results indicated that NDPK genes in B. napus exhibited different expression patterns across various tissues. Further analysis through qRT-PCR revealed that BnNDPK genes responded significantly to stress conditions such as salt, drought, and methyl jasmonate. This study enhances our understanding of the NDPK gene family in B. napus, providing a preliminary theoretical basis for the functional study of NDPK genes and offering some references for further revealing the phenomenon of polyploidization in plants.

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of a novel two-dimensional monolayer material, TaF4, are investigated using first-principles calculations. The dynamical and thermal stabilities of two-dimensional monolayer TaF4 were confirmed using its phonon dispersion spectrum and molecular dynamics calculations. The band structure obtained via the high-accuracy HSE06 (Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof 2006) functional theory revealed that monolayer two-dimensional TaF4 is an indirect bandgap semiconductor with a bandgap width of 2.58 eV. By extracting the exchange interaction intensities and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in a J1-J2-J3-K Heisenberg model, it was found that two-dimensional monolayer TaF4 possesses a Néel-type antiferromagnetic ground state and has a relatively high Néel temperature (208 K) and strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (2.06 meV). These results are verified via the magnon spectrum.

Cropland is crucial for regional food security, especially in vulnerable areas like the Tibetan Plateau. Accurate monitoring was hindered of cropland distribution due to complex topography and diverse crop phenology, making it challenging to assess its agricultural sustainability. To address this, this study aimed to develop a cropland identification approach based on an optimal identification feature knowledge graph (OIFKG) derived from time series remote sensing data. Cropland OIFKG (C_OIFKG) enhanced cropland identification accuracy by 96.6%, with producer’s accuracy and user’s accuracy of 98.1% and 89.9% respectively for cropland. The total cropland area in the Tibetan Plateau for 2022 was estimated at 1,800,160 hectares, representing about 1% of the total land area, with a significant concentration in the northeastern Qinghai province and the Yarlung Zangbo River Valley of Tibet Autonomous Region. The total cropland area estimated in this study for the Tibetan Plateau lied within the range provided by two published land cover datasets, being 3.56% lower than one dataset and 16.4% higher than the other. The cropland identification approach proposed by this study reduced reliance on known samples, improving spatiotemporal generalization capability. In the Tibetan Plateau, where cropland distribution was exceedingly rare, the method still achieved promising performance in cropland identification, demonstrating its effectiveness on the assessment of agriculture sustainability in high-altitude regions with intricate landscapes. Moreover, further assessment of C_OIFKG's applicability in different regions and compatibility with multi-source remote sensing data is needed.

We propose a novel method for estimating the permeability of heterogeneous sandstones based on the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data with multiple echo spacings. The decaying curves and their corresponding spectra are obtained for different echo spacings to investigate the relaxation property, the diffusion term, and the signal loss contributed by higher echo spacing. Moreover, an empirical model is developed to correlate permeability with the differential decay rate. The result shows that the geometric transversal relaxation time is positively related to echo spacing, which disobeys the traditional cognition. Moreover, the absolute value of the differential decay rate is positively correlated with the echo spacing and exhibits a power law behavior. More interestingly, it is observed that the permeability diminishes in a power law behavior with respect to fitting parameters. This marks the first attempt to establish a relationship between the permeability and NMR data with different echo spacings, which is hopeful to be extended to other complex reservoirs with the availability of multiple echo spacing data.

In the calculation of shale gas resources/reserves, isothermal adsorption parameters are mainly determined by dry sample data at the laboratory temperature, and the regression effect of total organic carbon content (TOC) isothermal adsorption parameters is poor. Based on the physical significance of key parameters in Langmuir and Henry adsorption models, the problems in determining the isothermal adsorption parameters in the calculation of shale gas reserves/reserves are analyzed by taking the marine shale in the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Forming–Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin as an example. Based on a large number of measured isothermal adsorption data, the effects of TOC, temperature and water saturation on the shale gas adsorption parameters are analyzed. The influence model of TOC, temperature and water saturation on isothermal adsorption parameters of shale gas is established, and a novel method for calculating the adsorption parameters of shale gas from under experimental conditions to original reservoir conditions is proposed. The results are obtained as follows. First, there are problems in the calculation of shale gas resources/reserves, such as poor and contradictory fitting relation between isothermal adsorption parameters and TOC, difficulty in the conversion of Van't Hoff equation, and difficulty in direct application of water saturation (Sw) in resource/reserves calculation. Second, the problem of poor direct fitting relation between Langmuir pressure (pL) and TOC is solved by integrating the Langmuir adsorption model with the Henry adsorption model and by establishing a new parameter – Henry constant a for methane adsorption capacity of shale. Third, when Sw30 MPa), the effect of Sw on the methane adsorption capacity of shale shows a similar trend, and the effect of water molecules on the adsorption capacity on shale pore surface is constant. It is concluded that the proposed novel method for determining the isothermal adsorption parameters of shale with different TOC, temperature and water saturation conditions provides a technical support for the accurate calculation of shale gas resources/reserves and contributes to the scientific development of shale gas industry.

Artificial intelligence has undergone rapid development in the last thirty years and has been widely used in the fields of materials, new energy, medicine, and engineering. Similarly, a growing area of research is the use of deep learning (DL) methods in connection with hydrological time series to better comprehend and expose the changing rules in these time series. Consequently, we provide a review of the latest advancements in employing DL techniques for hydrological forecasting. First, we examine the application of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) in hydrological forecasting, along with a comparison between them. Second, a comparison is made between the basic and enhanced long short-term memory (LSTM) methods for hydrological forecasting, analyzing their improvements, prediction accuracies, and computational costs. Third, the performance of GRUs, along with other models including generative adversarial networks (GANs), residual networks (ResNets), and graph neural networks (GNNs), is estimated for hydrological forecasting. Finally, this paper discusses the benefits and challenges associated with hydrological forecasting using DL techniques, including CNN, RNN, LSTM, GAN, ResNet, and GNN models. Additionally, it outlines the key issues that need to be addressed in the future.

Cellulose-based aerogel has attracted considerable attention for its excellent adsorption capacity, biodegradability, and renewability. However, it is considered eco-unfriendly due to defibrillation of agriculture waste and requires harmful/expensive chemical agents. In this study, cornstalk rind-based aerogel was obtained via the following steps: green H2O2/HAc delignification of cornstalk rind to obtain cellulose fibers, binding with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and freeze-drying treatment, and hydrophobic modification with stearic acid. The obtained aerogel showed high compressive strength (200 KPa), which is apparently higher (about 32 kPa) than NaClO-delignified cornstalk-based cellulose/PVA aerogel. Characterization of the obtained aerogel through SEM, water contact angle, etc., showed high porosity (95%), low density (0.0198 g/cm−3), and hydrophobicity (water contact angle, 159°), resulting in excellent n-hexane adsorption capacity (35 g/g), higher (about 29.5 g/g) than NaClO-delignified cornstalk-based cellulose/PVA aerogel. The adsorbed oil was recovered by the extrusion method, and the aerogel showed excellent recyclability in oil adsorption.

Wood possesses several advantageous qualities including innocuity, low cost, aesthetic appeal, and excellent biocompatibility, and its naturally abundant functional groups and diverse structural forms facilitate functionalization modification. As the most sustainable bio-based material, the combination of wood with triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) stands poised to significantly advance the cause of green sustainable production while mitigating the escalating challenges of energy consumption. However, the inherent weak polarizability of natural wood limits its development for TENGs. Herein, we present the pioneering development of a flexible transparent wood-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TW-TENG) combining excellent triboelectrical properties, optical properties, and wood aesthetics through sodium chlorite delignification and epoxy resin impregnation. Thanks to the strong electron-donating groups in the epoxy resin, the TW-TENG obtained an open-circuit voltage of up to ~127 V, marking a remarkable 530% enhancement compared to the original wood. Furthermore, durability and stability were substantiated through 10,000 working cycles. In addition, the introduction of epoxy resin and lignin removal endowed the TW-TENG with excellent optical characteristics, with optical transmittance of up to 88.8%, while preserving the unique texture and aesthetics of the wood completely. Finally, we show the application prospects of TW-TENGs in the fields of self-power supply, motion sensing, and smart home through the demonstration of a TW-TENG in the charging and discharging of capacitors and the output of electrical signals in different scenarios.

Recently, a signal sorting algorithm based on the congruence transform has been proposed, which is effective in dealing with the staggered Pulse Repetition Interval (PRI) signals. It can effectively sort the staggered PRI signals and obtain the sub-PRI sequence directly without sub-PRI ranking, and it is less affected by interfered pulses and pulse loss. Nevertheless, we find that the algorithm causes pseudo-peaks in the remainder histogram when sorting signals such as sliding PRI, sinusoidal PRI, etc. (collectively referred to as periodic PRI signal in this paper) and pseudo-peaks will cause errors in signal sorting. To solve the issue of pseudo-peaks when sorting periodic PRI signals, an improved sorting algorithm based on congruence transform is proposed. According to the analysis of the congruence characteristics of the periodic PRI signal, a novel method is proposed to identify pseudo-peaks based on the histogram peak amplitude and symmetric difference set. The signal sorting algorithm based on congruence transform is improved to achieve a good sorting effect on periodic PRI signals. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the novel algorithm can effectively sort periodic PRI signals and improve Precall, Pd, and Pf by 6.9%, 5.1%, and 3.2%, respectively, compared to the typical similar algorithms.
