17. Schools on Notice. A Policy Study of New York State's 1996-1997 Schools under Registration Review Process. Final Report to the New York State Education Department.

Abstract

In 1996, the Institute for Education and Social Policy at New York University began a 2-year policy study for the State Education Department (SED) of its Schools under Registration Review (SURR) process. The SED identifies and supports New York's low-performing schools for up to 3 years. Then schools that improve are removed from the SURR list, and those that do not are closed or redesigned. The first year of the policy study focused on the effectiveness of SED identification and registration, the capacity of the registration review to identify problems of teaching and learning, and the effectiveness of support to SURR schools. Data were gathered through site visits to 11 schools, document review, and surveys completed by principals and teachers in schools recently undergoing review and schools on the SURR list. Examination of the three areas of study disclosed a number of problems, but four particular areas of tension were identified, and strategies were proposed to deal with each of the four: (1) uniformity versus diversity; (2) performance versus monitoring; (3) standards-setting versus intervention; and (4) capacity-building versus compliance. Analysis suggests that there is a large group of low-performing schools that are not yet designated as SURR. To prevent achievement in those schools from dropping to unacceptable levels, state and local improvement efforts should also be targeted at these schools. Abstract

Curcumin has been reported to exert its anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity by inhibiting the binding of spike receptor-binding domain (RBD) to angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2). To identify more potent compounds, we evaluated the antiviral activities of curcumin and its analogs in SARS-CoV-2-infected cells. An artificial intelligence-supported activity prediction system was used to select the compounds, and 116 of the 334 curcumin analogs were proposed to have spike RBD-ACE2 binding inhibitory activity. These compounds were narrowed down to eight compounds for confirmatory studies. Six out of the eight compounds showed antiviral activity with EC50 values of less than 30 µM and binding inhibitory activity with IC20 values of less than 30 µM. Structure-activity relationship analyses revealed that the double bonds in the carbon chain connecting the two phenolic groups were essential for both activities. X-ray co-crystallography studies are needed to clarify the true binding pose and design more potent derivatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study investigates the nanostructural properties of pseudo-binary Al–1.0Mg2Si (mass%) alloys with and without 0.5Cu using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The TEM results show that both alloys exhibit extra electron diffraction spots related to MgSiMg second clusters at peak-aged conditions. High-resolution TEM images have revealed that the second cluster exists as a needle-shaped precipitate that is shorter and thicker than the β″ phase. We found that the second cluster, which we referred to as the R phase in this paper, is more likely to form partially along the longitudinal axis of a random-type precipitate. Thus, the atomic arrangement in the random-type precipitate is not completely random. SANS is used to quantify the size and volume fraction of the observed needle-shaped precipitates since the R phase is difficult to observe with TEM. The R phase forms even in the Cu-free alloy, but the volume fraction is low, and the growth and formation are retarded near the peak-aged conditions. Undoubtedly, the Cu addition has the effect of stabilizing the growth of the R phase and also promoting its formation. Therefore, the R phase also contributes to the increase in hardness at both under- and peak-aged conditions in the Cu-containing alloy in addition to the strengthening β″ phases. 34. Fabrication of Textured Porous Ti3SiC2 by Slip Casting under High Magnetic Field and Microstructural Evolution through High Temperature Deformation

Abstract

To clarify the effect of constraint conditions on the kink formation, fabrication process of the texture and porosity controlled Ti3SiC2 polycrystals was investigated and microstructural evolution during high temperature deformation was examined in it under high temperature uniaxial compression tests at 1200 degrees C. Dense textured Ti3SiC2 sintered body was fabricated by slip casting in the high magnetic field of 12 T and following pressureless sintering at 1400 degrees C for 1 h. The porosity of the textured Ti3SiC2 was controlled by dispersing polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) particles into the textured Ti3SiC2 as a spacer media. The highly textured Ti3SiC2 polycrystals with porosity of 8.4 vol% and 16.7 vol%, respectively, were successfully fabricated by the slip casting in the high magnetic field. After the high temperature uniaxial compression perpendicular to the c-axis of the textured structure, both the porous and dense Ti3SiC2 showed kink formation, which is a common deformation mode for anisotropic layered materials. However, the average rotation angles of the kink boundaries were higher in the porous specimen than in the dense specimen. Since the crystal rotation is necessary for the kink formation, kink bands would be preferably developed in the porous area due to its weaker constraint than in the dense area. It can be concluded from the microstructural analysis that the constrain factor caused by the neighbor grains affects the crystalline rotation, resulting in the kink boundary formation with different rotation angles.

39. Relationship between mechanical properties and age-hardening behavior around grain boundaries of Al-Mg-Si alloy

Abstract

Nanoindentation tests were conducted near the grain boundary (GB) of the Al-Mg-Si alloy, and the influence of GB character on the aging precipitation behavior and the mechanical properties was confirmed. After obtaining the GB characters by electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis, nanoindentation tests were carried out on under-aged, peak-aged, and over-aged samples. And then, the indentation areas were observed by back scattered electrons imaging (BSE) in order to identify indentation positions with respect to the GB. In this study, for the GB character, focusing on the rotation angle, the high-angle GB (HAGB) and the low-angle GB (LAGB) were selected. In addition, coincident site lattice GBs (CSL) were selected as the special GB. In the 180°C under-aged samples, the nano-hardness near GB is higher than that far from GB, while 180°C peak-aged samples, the nano-hardness is lower than that far from GB. Then the range near the GB where the hardness changes was larger at HAGB than at LAGB and CSL3. This suggests that the GB character affects the aging precipitation behavior and mechanical properties.

Abstract

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a means of exchanging genetic material asexually. The process by which horizontally transferred genes are domesticated by the host genome is of great interest but is not well understood. In this study, we determined the telomere-to-telomere genome sequence of the wheat-infecting Pyricularia oryzae strain Br48. SNP analysis indicated that the Br48 strain is a hybrid of wheat- and Brachiaria -infecting strains by a sexual or parasexual cross. Comparative genomic analysis identified several megabase-scale "insertions" in the Br48 genome, some of which were possibly gained by HGT-related events from related species, such as P. pennisetigena or P. grisea. Notably, the mega-insertions often contained genes whose phylogeny is not congruent with the species phylogeny. Moreover, some of the genes have a close homolog even in distantly related organisms, such as basidiomycetes or prokaryotes, implying the involvement of multiple HGT events. Interestingly, the levels of the silent epigenetic marks H3K9me3 and H3K27me3 in a genomic region tended to be negatively correlated with the phylogenetic concordance of genes in the same region, suggesting that horizontally transferred DNA is preferentially targeted for epigenetic silencing. Indeed, the putative HGT-derived genes were activated when MoKmt6 , the gene responsible for H3K27me3 modification, was deleted. Notably, these genes also tended to be up-regulated during infection, suggesting that they are now under host control and have contributed to establishing a fungal niche. In conclusion, this study suggests that epigenetic modifications have played an important role in the domestication of HGT-derived genes in the P. oryzae genome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this article is to show that the paired-learner interview is an effective means to reduce communicative stress for the nonnative learner and one that can also elicit authentic learner participation.
