In this study, a bond-slip model is proposed to take into account the effects of corrosion on the bond characteristics between extremely low-strength concrete and plain reinforcing bars. The proposed bond-slip model is based on reversed cyclic lateral loading tests of nearly full-scale reinforced concrete columns with reinforcing bars corroded to different levels. The columns taken into consideration during the current study were part of an extensive experimental program designed to study the performance of older columns at Istanbul Technical University. The columns were representative of a large number of underperforming reinforced concrete buildings prone to seismic actions throughout the world. Test results demonstrated that the corrosion of reinforcing bars had a significant effect on the strength and deformability characteristics of substandard reinforced concrete columns subjected to the combined actions of axial and reversed cyclic lateral loads. Taking this aspect into consideration, a novel bond-slip model is established to estimate the variation in bond strength degradation and the bond strength as a function of the level of corrosion of the reinforcing bars. Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate library cooperation among the libraries of Turkish higher education institutions in the changing global environment.Design/methodology/approach This study has been carried out with ILL librarians working in state and foundation university libraries in Turkey. The survey was sent to 140 inter library loan (ILL) librarians who were asked to answer 35 questions both open and closed. There were 100 responses which is an excellent response rate of 72 per cent. It was conducted with VETI (Data Collection and Statistics), which is a web-based form application developed by Istanbul Technical University.Findings Turkish libraries are taking the opportunities offered by technical developments to serve their users with instant information by providing access to electronic resources and transferring their collections to electronic media. Reconstruction of ILL services to fulfill users’ needs is inevitable because of the increasing expectations of users and emerging alternatives to access information.Originality/value This is the first systematic national investigation into the state of ILL in Turkish libraries. This paper analyzes the passenger-carpooling potential among undergraduate students using a model for estimating choice based on combined revealed and stated preference data. The data are obtained from a survey performed at four campuses of Istanbul Technical University. The case in focus is carpooling as a passenger; carpooling as a driver is deliberately left out because of students' lack of familiarity with it. The hypothetical passenger-carpooling scenarios lead to enquiries about the fee students are willing to pay and the distance they are willing to walk to a designated pick-up location. The estimation results show that females and frequent campus travelers are more likely to prefer passenger carpooling. The scenario analysis included in the paper reveals the prioritization of carpool fee over walking distance to pick-up locations among undergraduate students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to test the applicability of k 0 -INAA method at the Istanbul Technical University TRIGA Mark II research reactor. The neutron spectrum parameters such as epithermal neutron flux distribution parameter ( α ), thermal to epithermal neutron flux ratio ( f ) and thermal neutron flux ( φ th ) were determined at the central irradiation channel of the ITU TRIGA Mark II research reactor using bare triple-monitor method. HPGe detector calibrations and calculations were carried out by k 0 -IAEA software. The α , f and φ th values were calculated to be −0.009, 15.4 and 7.92·10 12 cm −2 s −1 , respectively. NIST SRM 1633b coal fly ash and intercomparison samples consisting of clay and sandy soil samples were used to evaluate the validity of the method. For selected elements, the statistical evaluation of the analysis results was carried out by z -score test. A good agreement between certified/reported and experimental values was obtained. Purpose of this paper is to explore how resistance of individual and collective actors play role in maintenance and change of institutions. Framing tactics of two emerging social movements in Istanbul Technical University and Middle East Technical University, which emerged against institutional changes in Turkish higher education, were examined by hybrid ethnography, using both online and offline data sources. Findings show that framing tactics of institutional entrepreneurs comprise different discourses and different forms of power, which also vary during different life stages of these movements. This paper contributes to existing literature in three ways. First power dynamics in institutional change, which is mostly disregarded in institutional theory, is taken into consideration. Second, with a longitudinal comparative study, it is shown that outcomes of social movements with similar demands may diverge according to different framing tactics based on power mechanisms that appealed at different stages of their life cycle. Third, this paper, as one of the few examples of a hybrid ethnographic approach, underlines the key role of considering both offline--online data sources, as an important part of actors' life that take place in the online world. Environmental risk is a measure of potential threats to the environment and combines the probability that events will cause or lead to degradation of the environment and the severity of that degradation. Evaluation of environmental risk factors requires linguistic terms to be used rather than exact numerical assignments. The fuzzy set theory provides a useful tool for converting linguistic terms into numerical evaluations. In this article, we will try to select the best location for the Faculty of Management of the Istanbul Technical University taking care of the predetermined environmental criteria by using fuzzy TOPSIS. The decision matrix is composed of linguistic evaluations for the alternatives with respect to the environmental risk criteria. The Macka Campus area has been selected after the multicriteria evaluation. A sensitivity analysis is also realized to see if the minor changes in criteria weights cause any change in the ranking of alternatives. Unless the importance of the criteria rock or soil structure, remoteness to health facilities, transportation availability, and transportation costs is changed to be from low to extremely low importance, the Macka Campus is still the selected alternative. This paper aims to describe the modification of the radial beam port of ITU (İstanbul Technical University) TRIGA Mark II research reactor for BNCT applications. Radial beam port is modified with Polyethylene and Cerrobend collimators. Neutron flux values are measured by neutron activation analysis (Au–Cd foils). Experimental results are verified with Monte Carlo results. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between Internet addiction and problem solving skills of university students. The study also examined the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of Problematic Internet Entertainment Use Scale for Adolescents, which centers on major Internet entertainments such as online video games and social networking sites, specifically with regard to normative, reliability, and validity information. Problem Solving Inventory was utilized in order to measure the problem solving skills of students. Both instruments were administered to 371 students aged 17 to 36 years from different departments in Marmara University and Istanbul Technical University (Istanbul, Turkey). This study showed that the Turkish version of the Problematic Internet Entertainment Use Scale for Adolescents was a reliable and valid instrument for measurement of maladaptive patterns in the use of online entertainments such as OVG and SNS. The results revealed that there is a close relationship between problematic internet entertainment use and Avoidant ( r = 443; p < .01) and Impulsive problem solving styles ( r = .402; p < .01) among university students. Since 1999, the Bursa Branch of the Chamber of Electrical Engineers of Turkey, together with Uludag University and Istanbul Technical University, have organized an international conference (the 8th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering, ELECO) in Bursa, a historical city in Turkey where the Ottoman Empire was established. This study investigates the potential effects of parking pricing on the private vehicle use of residents of the campuses of large compounds such as universities. For this purpose, a parking pricing model is estimated for the academicians working at the Ayazaga Campus of Istanbul Technical University. Similar to many campus areas, the major problems of this campus are the insufficiency of parking supply and the campus's contribution to the congestion on the surrounding road network. The study combines revealed and stated preference data obtained from a questionnaire, estimates a mode choice model in order to explore responses to different parking pricing scenarios and execute willingness-to-pay analysis. Abstract: This study investigates robotics education to support science and technology courses for primary school education in Private Evrim College in Istanbul. This research is a kind of case study on a group of students who are having a robotics education. The robotics education is not only providing information to students about robot making also help them to improve their skills and abilities. First starting point is introducing equipments for designing electronic circuits and teaching fundamental principles for robot making. Robotics education performed with 16 students between 10 and 15 years old and they are distributed in 4 groups. In the research, it will be seen that students can learn and apply their skills on designing circuits while they are discussing with classmates by the means of collaborative learning and project based learning. Also, students have been attended to the race in their schools. Furthermore the winner group is competed in a robotics competition which is held every year in Istanbul Technical University. Consequently, the findings and evaluations help to understand that robotics education to support students’ life, moreover, affecting their science performance and relationships with friends in class positively. The western part of North Anatolian Fault (NAF) bifurcates around Mudurnu into two fault segments: northern and southern branch. The latter bifurcates again at west of Pamukova and creates middle strand. This study aimed to analyze crustal movement along the middle strand near Iznik which is considered as inactive fault. We focused on a microgeodetic network called General Command of Mapping-Istanbul Technical University (GCM-ITU) network around this segment. In order to obtain displacement values, five campaigns performed on the network which were used in the study. The displacements of the stations were estimated relative to the fixed stations located at the south of the network. The coordinates of the stations were calculated from the triangulation measurements realized in 1941 and 1963, trilateration measurements in 1981, and GPS campaigns in 2004 and 2007. Then, mean displacements of the network ranging between 7 mm/yr and 18 mm/yr were obtained for these years. In the second part of the study, the GPS data were reprocessed by adding three stations from Marmara Continuous GPS Network (MAGNET). Details of MAGNET can be found Ergintav et al. (2002). Small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) have an important impact on the development of new economy but SMEs have a need for venture capital (VC) and initial public offerings (IPOs) in order to grow. Therefore, It is very important to know how owners, managers and employees in the SMEs perceive the VC and IPOs in Turkey. A questionnaire is developed to understand these types of perceptions via focus groups. The questionnaire is distributed to the owners, managers and employees of SMEs that operate in Istanbul Technical University KOSGEB, Bogazici University KOSGEB and Yıldız Technical University KOSGEB. The article presents a study on the precipitation chemistry and its variation in the urban and forest areas in Istanbul, Turkey using the back trajectory analysis. It notes that the emission sources in various countries worldwide that not just affect their contiguous environment in isolation as the pollutants are carried by air masses and are stuck as dry or wet compositions in the ecosystems. The researchers analyzed the rainwater samples gathered at the Maslak Campus of the Istanbul Technical University (ITUCM), and the Forest Research Area of Istanbul University Faculty of Forestry. The results show that the daily average values of the rainwater chemical composition indicated the volume-weighted mean (VHM) in 5.8 for the samples gathered in Istanbul, Turkey.

This essay discusses the problem of archiving sound works. The case study on which it is based concerns the Sound Archive Project, designed and implemented by the digital arts foundation NOMAD and Istanbul Technical University Dr. Erol Üçer's Center for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM). The Sound Archive Project seeks to collect and present sound works by young composers, as well as to encourage interaction between artists and listeners. Thus, the archive functions not only as a research facility, but also as a place where performances, workshops, and panel discussions take place. The conceptual framework of the Sound Archive Project inevitably raises questions about the meaning of archive, sound work, and archiving sound works: What is an archive? Is it silent storage? If so, how can it be turned into a dynamic platform? What does archiving suggest as a technique? What does sound work imply? Is it possible to define or describe sound work as a category? I call myself privileged to be a friend of Tayfun Akgul. He is Associate Editor of the “Et Cetera Corner” of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine [1]. He is also a Profes sor of Electrical Engineering in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering at Istanbul Technical Uni versity, where he teaches various undergraduate- and gradu ate-level courses, conducts research, plus publishes scientifi c papers on various signal-processing topics. The followers of his corner are familiar with his so-called “montage portraits,” which are caricatures of real people made by using found objects [2]. He produces these portraits with his self-made rule: Try not to reshape the found objects; instead, if possible, use them as they are found, or apply simple manipulations like bending or rounding the objects. A successful assembly of these irrelevant objects sometimes turns out to be an attractive caricature of a person. I have followed his creation of faces for years.
