We provide, for non-experts, a brief overview of holographic QCD (quantum chromodynamics) and a review of the recent proposal (Hashimoto et al 2010 (arXiv:1003.4988[hep-th])) of a matrix-like description of multi-baryon systems in holographic QCD. Based on the matrix model, we derive the baryon interaction at short distances in multi-flavor holographic QCD. We show that there is a very universal repulsive core of inter-baryon forces for a generic number of flavors. This is consistent with a recent lattice QCD analysis for Nf = 2, 3 where the repulsive core looks universal. We also provide a comparison of our results with the lattice QCD and the operator product expansion analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ``small'' black ring in 5D obtained by giving angular momentum to the D1-D5 system compactified on S1 × K3 is a very interesting object in the sense that it does not have an event horizon in the supergravity limit whereas it microscopically has a finite entropy. The microscopic origin of this small black ring can be analyzed in detail since it is constructed by adding angular momentum to the well-studied D1-D5 system. On the other hand, its macroscopic, geometrical picture is difficult to study directly. In this note, by duality transformations and the 4D-5D connection, we relate this 5D small black ring to a 4D small non-rotating black hole, where the latter is known to develop a non-vanishing horizon due to stringy R2 corrections to the supergravity action. The entropy of the 4D small black hole agrees with the microscopic entropy of the 5D small black ring, which supports the validity of the 4D-5D connection even for small black objects. Three-dimensional Euclidean pure gravity with a negative cosmological constant can be formulated in terms of the Chern-Simons theory, classically. This theory can be written in a supersymmetric way by introducing auxiliary gauginos and scalars. We calculate the exact partition function of this Chern-Simons theory by using the localization technique. Thus, we obtain the quantum gravity partition function, assuming that it can be obtained nonperturbatively by summing over partition functions of the Chern-Simons theory on topologically different manifolds. The resultant partition function is modular invariant, and, in the case in which the central charge is expected to be 24, it is the J function, predicted by Witten.

We consider a persistent superconductor current along the direction with no translational symmetry in a holographic gravity model. Incorporating a lattice structure into the model, we numerically construct novel solutions of hairy charged stationary black branes with momentum or rotation along the latticed direction. The lattice structure prevents the horizon from rotating, and the total momentum is only carried by matter fields outside the black brane horizon. This is consistent with the black hole rigidity theorem, and it suggests that in dual field theory with lattices, superconductor currents are made up of "composite" fields, rather than "fractionalized" degrees of freedom. We also show that our solutions are consistent with the superfluid hydrodynamics.

We examine certain two-charge supersymmetric states with spin in five-dimensional string theories which can be viewed as small black rings when the gravitational coupling is large. Using the 4D-5D connection, these small black rings correspond to four-dimensional nonspinning small black holes. Using this correspondence, we compute the degeneracy of the microstates of the small black rings exactly and show that it is in precise agreement with the macroscopic degeneracy to all orders in an asymptotic expansion. Furthermore, we analyze the five-dimensional small black ring geometry and show qualitatively that the Regge bound arises from the requirement that closed timelike curves be absent.
