Abstract: Resilience is one of the three core properties of social‐ecological systems, mixing adaptability and transformability. Flexibility can be defined in terms of diversity of procedures and the speed at which they can be mobilized by one organization. The analyses performed are presented in terms of levers that farmers can deploy to protect their management systems against market uncertainty. These levers differ depending on farmer standpoints, objectives, lessons learned, the collective organizations they work with, the standards and specifications they work to, etc. It is equally important to identify the interplays between overarching and underlying scale levels for the system studied and to hone in on the dynamics at work during periods of transition. Adaptive capacities of farm systems are closely linked to how the farmer perceives the situations to manage, according to his aims, to his behaviour face to risk and to his idea of what is his job. We propose to use different words to describe the properties of farming systems to cope with changes, according to the level within the system: “adaptive capacity” or “plasticity” for the animal level, “resilience” for the biotechnical level and “flexibility” for the whole system, including the manager. We think there is a real challenge working at each level on transition periods and processes, as farming systems will have more and more to adapt face to unpredic events.

Abstract: Toward exacerbated global changes, one of the main current challenges is to implement agrecological transition. In this context, territorial scale appears as a consistent level where governance procedures are experienced. The context is the one of a multi-level and multi-actors’ governance leading to change in local public policy. We questioned 21 key stakeholders from agricultural frameworks as well as actors from collective organisations. By combining textual analysis tools and graph theory, we focus on stakeholders’ representations of viability as these actors produce advice regarding the settings of administrative and regulatory planning. We identify four key dimensions to viability (economical, agroecological, socio-cultural and organisational). The results show a continuum on the agroecological dimension of viability. They reveal the pivotal role of gatekeepers designed as actors able to support substantive change by transforming the agroecological dimension of viability in a ‘rational myth’. By doing so, they could initiate collective actions to promote change and support agroecological transition.

Abstract: Compléter avec les actes Compléter affilitation Compléter avec les actes Compléter affilitationCompléter avec les actesCompléter affilitation; One the aims of the multidisciplinary research project Gaia-Trop on viability and adaptive management of small tropical islands agro-systems, was to devise a new model of farm system using tools of the mathematical viability theory. It has been constructed in close cooperation with French West Indies farmers to take into account their needs and expectations. The main emerging points focused on soil degradation, pest disease and climatic risks and economic constraints. A specific software is being developed for the viability calculus that will be made available for this community. We present first insights of this model and results obtained for only one parcel and without taking uncertainties at this stage. lt highlights that the objective of restoring the soil quality in the long term can be unstainable for farmers facing with financial constraints. The issue of sharing the costs of the agro-ecological transition must be asked.

Abstract: Organic and low-input systems are proposed as ways to reduce the environmental impacts of agriculture. Previous studies have shown that yields of organic systems can be ∼19 to 25% lower than conventional systems. An intermediary, low-input system could be less damaging for the environment than conventional systems, while reducing yield losses in comparison with organic systems. In this study, we performed a meta-analysis to compare low-input systems to conventional and organic systems. Our analysis is based on data of cropping system experiments conducted in Europe and North America, and focuses on two important crops, maize (Zea mays L.) and soft winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Pesticide use was greatly reduced for low-input systems as compared with conventional for the two crops (50% for maize, 70% for wheat on average). Mean mineral N use was also reduced by 36% for maize and 28% for wheat in low-input relative to conventional. Maize yields in low-input systems were not different from those in conventional systems, and were higher than yields in organic systems (yield ratio of low-input vs. organic = 1.24). Wheat yields in low-input systems were lower than yields in conventional systems (yield ratio of low-input vs. conventional = 0.88), but were substantially higher than yields in organic systems (yield ratio of low input vs. organic = 1.43). This is one of the first meta-analyses to assess performance in terms of pesticide use intensity, and yields, with clear evidence emerging that low-input systems can markedly reduce pesticide application, without strongly reducing crop yields, relative to conventional systems.

Abstract: In this paper, we present a framework and a methodology to identify the long-term strategies of small-scale farmers dealing with uncertainties. To do so, we link the Activity System framework to the concept of perceived vulnerability and analyse the small-scale farmers’ trajectories. Based on a sample of 34 small-scale coffee producers in Guatemala and through the analysis of case studies and classification methods, we identify some trends in long-term decisionmaking. These trends are mainly built on responsiveness, autonomy, vulnerability shifts and collective means of action. We finally discuss these findings in the light of previous studies carried out in different contexts.

Abstract: The way smallholder farms organize and carry out work impacts their ability to secure their livelihoods and meet growing demand for agricultural products. This study investigates the way dairy family farms in Brazil manage their workforce to achieve their objectives of production and income. Fifteen smallholder farms were surveyed using the QuaeWork method to understand the work organization on each farm. A high diversity of workloads was found, but these do not appear to be strictly related to the farms' production systems. The high variability of workloads is linked to the available workforce, technical choices, and the delegation of tasks to an external workforce. Farmers can decrease their workload by adopting milking mechanization, silage, hiring labor, and increasing the duration of the work day. Work organization depends on a farmer's personal choices, rendering the whole issue of workforce management a process unique to each farm.

Abstract: Humans occupy the space in different ways. The practices through which they deal with local biophysical potential to pursue their goals shape the space forming the "land". We consider the land as the spatial entity whose character is defined by these human and natural interactions at a given time. "Land changes" occur when at least one of the following land components is modified : the shape of this spatial entity, its cover/use, the practices operated on it, its tenure or its accessibility. Taken together several partial or individual changes may show common dynamics than can be named " land change transitions" (LCT). International (i.e., planned) and uninternational changes coexist in the real world eventually driving these transitions according tu local and global dynamics. Rethinking LCT is a way to address drastic and subtle land changes to understanding and steering them. Indeed, this is a twofold challenge for research. On the one hand, research has to bridge the gap with the complex array of actions taking place on land, on the other hand understanding LCT requires to work across disciplinary boundaries. For that, our communication aims at conceptualizing LCT stressing out the "territory" as a relevant inter- and trans- disciplinary perspective. In this context territory is meant as the level of ogranisation for local actions in response to wider global drivers. We focus on rural territoiries - placed in-between the more permanent urban and natural areas - the spaces on Earth where probably the most important LCT are taking place. Changes of land cover (e.g., from agriculture to urban), so as of the land system strucutre (e.g., the increasing mix of urban and agricultural areas) or of the practices (e.g., the conversion to organic farming of producers located in peri-urban areas or their coordination with consumers' assocations) occur unevenly in space and over time, eventually making the land character evolving more rapidly than in the past and more deeply than in urban or natural areas. Undesired side-effects for these lands are widely documented in literature, suche as the loss of the cultural charater or the threatening of natural resources. We will discuss the relevance of a territorial approach to articulate local et global land change transitions, and to make explicit how the relations between different land users and managers with the local biophysical potential shape and can be used to design different land system architecture.

Abstract: Article ayant fait l'objet d'un communication : 13th European International Farming Systems Association (IFSA) Symposium, Greece (1-5/07/2018) Theme 2: Agroecology and new farming arrangements; International audience; Among the various forms of agroforestry, spatial combinations of fruit trees and diversified vegetable growing (also called market gardening) are currently experiencing strong growth in France. The SMART project, which brought together several research teams and development organisations, aimed to explore these systems, taking into account the technical, agro and socio-economic dimensions/traits. The results of the surveys and observations carried out among farmers associated with this project showed that these systems mainly concerned farms engaged in short food supply chains for which diversity was a central element for commercial strategy and performance. Diversification of products is therefore a central justification for the intercropping of fruit trees and shrubs with vegetables. SMART also sought to assess the effects of synergies and competitions of agroforestry, as perceived by the farmers. The vast majority of them considered that intercropping fruit trees and vegetables did not create a major problem in terms of work organisation. They considered that it did not create competition which could have a negative impact on the productivity of crops. Their certainty in this respect was rather limited, given the generally short duration of their experience. However, the assessment they were making today led most of them to consider that the choice of agroforestry was fully justified and could be recommended to other market gardeners. These first results showed the need, when evaluating such systems, to adopt dynamic and holistic viewpoint on the different performance levels, allowing to consider the evolution of the trade-offs between advantages and disadvantages of such type of agroforestry on the long-term basis.

Abstract: IntroductionDespite growing evidence for the multiple health benefits of community gardening, longitudinal studies based on quantitative data are needed. JArDinS is a quasi-experimental study aimed at assessing the impact of community garden participation (a natural experiment) in the adoption of more sustainable lifestyles.Materials and MethodsGardeners starting gardening in a community garden in Montpellier (France) were recruited in 2018 (natural experiment group). Volunteers with no experience in community gardening and matched for age range, gender, household income and household composition were recruited in a control group. A recruitment goal of 80 participants per group was determined to detect a 30% increase in F&V supply in the gardeners group.Participant were issued with three tools: a Food Supply Dairy to collect data on monthly household’s food supply, a triaxial accelerometer (Actigraph) to measure physical activity and an online questionnaire on mental and social health, sensitivity to food waste, and connection with nature. The sustainability of lifestyles is examined by considering conjointly the three dimensions of sustainability:1) Social/health – measured by nutritional quality of household’s food supply, physical activity, mental well-being and social connection.2) Environment – measured by environmental impact of household’s food supply and related food trips, concern for food waste and connection with nature. 3) Economy - measured by household food expenditure and the budget share of each food group and subgroup.Measures have been collected at baseline and will be repeated 12 months later. Change of outcomes after 1 year will be compared between the natural experiment and the control groups, to evaluate the effect of access to a community garden on the sustainability of lifestyles.ResultsA final number of 77 participants per group were enrolled at baseline, which is 4% less the original recruitment goal. Baseline data for the natural experiment group and the control group are currently being analysed and will be presented. DiscussionThis study will provide valuable information about the potential of community gardens to favor sustainable lifestyles, based on a robust quasi-experimental design allowing causality evaluation. Abstract: Following to the presentation about the transformation of French family farming, this article aim at studying the concept of agricultural model and how it leads to discuss the stakes of coexistence and confrontation of different forms of agriculture. In the first part of my presentation, I shall expose the main features of French agriculture and its contemporary transformation. In the second part, I shall briefly compare some of the well-known analytical frameworks of forms of agriculture. In the third part, the concept of agricultural development model is introduced. And finally, I will explain why it could be relevant to consider the coexistence and confrontation of agricultural models.

Abstract: In agroecological approaches, autonomy emerges as a central concept. It is also meaningful for farmers, for whom implementing the agroecological transition of livestock farming systems (LFS) requires greater autonomy with respect to inputs and the dominant socio-economic and technical regime. How does this concept of autonomy encompass the complexity of the agroecological transition? This chapter provides an answer through an overview of the various approaches used to analyse the autonomy of LFS, as well as a conceptual framework that can serve to comprehensively examine it. Three approaches to LFSs’ autonomy are presented, based on whether they are focused on the flows of material between system components, on the functioning and management of the system, or on the socio-economic organisation and the values underpinning it. Each of these addresses autonomy in its biotechnical or decisional dimension, as well as in terms of three analysis components: embeddedness, dependency, and footprint. The conceptual framework inter-relates these two dimensions and three components, thus providing an integrated approach to LFSs’ autonomy. Its application to two case studies, one on the farm level and the other on the farm and territorial levels, demonstrates its relevance to design and implement the agroecological transition of LFSs.

Abstract: International audience; Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, food safety has become a societal issue that has received considerable attention in Vietnam. Cases of food intoxication are copiously reported in the press, while scientific reports show that the risk is imminent and is particularly underestimated due to lack of statistics and appropriate knowledge regarding the food chain. This crisis forced the Vietnam government to adopt structural solutions and construct its national food control system. In 2010, the Parliament approved the Food Safety Law, thanks to which the country started applying modern principles of administration. It implemented regular food safety controls, allocated and relayed the responsibility to decentralized public agencies, and required food information. This article discusses Vietnam's food control system after the promulgation of the Food Safety Law. We show that in addition to the inherent problems such as credibility of risk analysis, the main challenges arise from the daily implementation of control activities. Rule enforcement is weak because of the informal economy in agriculture and food supply sectors. Improvements in rule enforcement are urgently required in this fast changing economy in the middle run.

Abstract: International audience; Fair trade is a new form of commercial partnership whereby actors in the North engage with actors in the South on a number of conditions, including setting a minimum price, a development bonus, and so on. But above all, fair trade organizations in the South are implementing mechanisms that more or less facilitate the empowerment of their members. This article analyzes the empowerment effects of two fair trade organizations in South India. It shows that while positive effects can be seen, the prevailing social norms in India are extremely influential for women at the moment, so that women are putting all their hopes on their daughters through their education.

Abstract: This article describes the actions taken by the National Federation of Organic Farming (FNAB) to try to influence the course of organic agriculture's development in France. This federation wields the strength that accrues from its network of regional associations, but has no direct control over the economic actions of farmers and enterprises in the organic sector. It is trying to influence these actions in three different ways. First, it is drawing up a normative framework, a stabilised discourse about the risks that are linked to the current strong growth of the market and about the economic model and values that it wants to defend in this context. Second, the FNAB tries to affect the ways that the food supply chains are organised by promoting certain production and trade organisation schemes. Third, the FNAB produces information and references to help farmers and economic operators get their market bearings.

Abstract: In the literature and in current public discourse, innovation is usually taken to mean technological innovation, which is carried out through the figure of the entrepreneur. This editorial introduction first goes back to the emergence of the notion of social innovation, dedicated to including other processes, actors and purposes. It reminds us that the notion has been shaped by the crises that faced societies from the 1970s and presents the two fields of research that have anchored the notion in different theoretical positions. We highlight how the food and agricultural sector illustrates the three current meanings of social innovation, despite the fact that the general literature on social innovation usually focuses only on a few types of initiatives. We explain how the papers of this special issue demonstrate that agriculture and food represent an exemplary empirical terrain to push forward thinking in the field, such as the need for a better understanding of ‘social innovation in the making’ or of the processes of innovation scaling. Abstract: International audience; Farms are evolving in a political and social environment concerned with the three dimensions – environmental, social, and economic – of sustainable farming. This study analyses the key factors determining the sustainability of 36 farms reflecting the diverse farming systems found on the Saïs Plain in Morocco, where an intensification dynamic encouraged by the government is combined with increasingly constrained access to irrigation water and fluctuating agricultural commodity prices. The sustainability of each farm was assessed using the Indicateurs de Durabilité des Exploitations Agricoles/Farm Sustainability Indicators method. A multivariate statistical analysis was conducted to analyze and group the case farms and assess the scores of each component of sustainability. Results show that agroecological sustainability of a farm depends on its autonomy in using resources and the extent to which its production system is diversified. Farm structure and the choice of production system affect economic sustainability. The farmers’ preferences and social values influence socio-territorial sustainability. No farm is able to obtain a high total sustainability value (max 55/100), with the economic dimension varying in opposite directions to the agroecological and socio-territorial dimensions. The implications of the choice of the assessment method on the sustainability results are discussed, as are the consequences of agricultural policies on the farms’ sustainability.

Abstract: Session 2.4 - System drivers I; Mainly motivated by their search for autonomy (self-sufficiency an self-reliance), farmers interacting in farm machinery cooperatives (CUMA) in France develop new patterns of cooperation beyond the joint use of equipment and human resources. This work, supported by the interdisciplinary project CAPACCITA, aims at understanding to what extent farmers’ quest for autonomy in the CUMA network can be a key factor in the development of agro-ecological practices and production systems. The research is based on the agronomic and sociological study of 3 CUMA groups in France. It combines together three methodological approaches: (i) a comprehensive analysis of the technical changes operated by the farmers, their rationale and the consequences of such changes on the global farm functioning (ii) a characterization of the level of agroecologization of practices and trajectories based on the Efficiency-Substitution-Redesign approach (iii) an impact assessment of these changes on sustainability and autonomy, derived from the IDEA method. Results showed a great diversity of pathways of practices change, between groups and within each group. We showed a co-evolution of the ecologization of agricultural practices between different cultivation techniques. This dynamic approach made it possible to identify the key stages and levers of the agro-ecological transition, at the individual and collectives levels. The impact assessment revealed that farmers have gained more control in decision-making, more use of internal and territorial resources, but very few farmers have gained more economic autonomy. Thus, identifying levers and patterns of practices design to gain autonomy in CUMA groups brings very useful knowledge to support agroecological transition at territorial scale.

Abstract: Session 5.10 - The role of Localised AgriFood Systems and place-based products in the transition pathways towards sustainable agrifood systems: Interaction between LAFS and GI place-based productions; Localised AgriFood Systems (LAFS), particularly when they are reinforced by a Geographical Indication (GI) registration system, are seen as a sustainable model of production and trade. This paper interrogates this assertion. Seeking the bases of LAFS and GI sustainability, it examines their appearance and continuation throughout their development trajectory, first theoretically, then thanks to two case studies ("Villa Rica coffee" in Peru and "Uvs Seabuckthorn" in Mongolia). Theoretically, LAFS ability to induce a sustainable trajectory for local resources’ valorization is established. Different types of proximities, an institutionalization process and territorial solidarity may help overcome collective action blockages and contribute to constructing an innovation system, providing that local actors may interact with the system’s external environment. Clear threats appear however during LAFS expansion, as proximities and coordination capacity are necessarily reduced, whereas increase in production may induce a stronger competition. GI could then appear as the solution, being able to delimit production area and to reinforce local organizations within it. Put to the test, this model appears quite strong during the initial phases of LAFS development, but doesn’t capture the interactions between LAFS and the other production and trade models coexisting in the food systems. LAFS and GI, which need a strong producers’ involvement, are permanently challenged by other models in which producers can engage themselves individually (private brands, organic production, niche markets…). Permanent tensions exist between collective dynamics having created a reputation that can be seen as a common resource and individual strategies using that resource and potentially weakening it.

Abstract: Session 5.3 - Organic farming; This article describes the actions taken by the National Federation of Organic Farming (FNAB) to try to influence the course of organic agriculture's development in France. This federation wields the strength that accrues from its network of regional associations, but has no direct control over the economic actions of farmers and enterprises in the organic sector. It is trying to influence these actions in three different ways. First, it is drawing up a normative framework, a stabilised discourse about the risks that are linked to the current strong growth of the market and about the economic model and values that it wants to defend in this context. Second, the FNAB tries to affect the ways that the food supply chains are organised by promoting certain production and trade organisation schemes. Third, the FNAB produces information and references to help farmers and economic operators get their market bearings.

Abstract: International audience; This article shows how new theoretical work on assessing sustainability of farms, carried out as part of a multidisciplinary approach, allowed a new theoretical framework to be develop, along with version 4 of the IDEA Method (Indicateurs de Durabilité d'une Exploitation Agricole). The first section divides existing studies taken from the literature into two types of indicator-based conceptual frameworks: those based on sustainable agriculture objectives, and those based on a systemic approach focusing on the properties of sustainability as applied to agriculture. The second part of this article explains the overall process of assessing farm sustainability based on the conceptual framework developed for IDEA v.4. The theoretical framework relates to strong sustainability, and agricultural multifunctionality (with 12 associated objectives). The method includes a systemic analysis of sustainability based on five properties observed within a sustainable farm: The ability to produce and reproduce goods and services; Autonomy; Robustness, Territorial embeddedness and Overall responsibility. These properties are then evaluated from 54 different indicators of agricultural sustainability. The method combines two mutually complementary approaches to assessing sustainability. The first of these examines the extent to which sustainability has been achieved (in agro-ecological, socio-territorial and economic terms) by aggregating indicators based on 13 components and a scoring system using sustainability " units ". The second approach assesses the level of sustainability based on the five properties mentioned above. Indicators are aggregated hierarchically and organised based on 14 key categories. We show how the concept of properties has real educational value and can help to bring a new perspective to the field of sustainable farming.

Abstract: Session 5.11 - The role of Localised AgriFood Systems and place-based products in the transition pathways towards sustainable agrifood systems: GI evaluation from a sustainable development point of viewSession 5.11 - The role of Localised AgriFood Systems and place-based products in the transition pathways towards sustainable agrifood systems: GI evaluation from a sustainable development point of view; Geographical Indications (GI) are Intellectual Property Rights that are defined in international agreements (ADPIC, Lisbon agreement) as well as in multilateral (European regulation, and other regional laws) and national laws. This paper presents preliminary research results from a vast data collection and analysis of the economic impacts of GI processes worldwide. GI "processes" are understood as the pathways from product having strong reputation, to the group of concerned stakeholders and especially the producers (farmers and processors), along the interaction with public authorities in charge of the registration and the protection of the use of the related geographical name. Nine case studies have been selected in order to offer a range of situations by ensuring diversity of countries, agricultural sectors, markets, size of the value chain, legal protection framework (sui generis or trademark), and type of strategies (promotion or protection).

Abstract: Ce WP a fait l'objet d'une publication in Ecological Economics, Elsevier, 2018, 146, pp.607-620. 〈hal-01672020〉; Biological invasions entail massive biodiversity losses and tremendous economic impacts that justify significant management efforts. Because the funds available to control biological invasions are limited, there is a need to identify priority species. This paper first review current invasive species prioritization methods and explicitly highlights their pitfalls. We then construct a cost-benefit optimization framework that incorporates species utility, ecological value, distinctiveness, and species interactions. This framework offers the theoretical foundations of a simple and operational method for the management of invasive species under a limited budget constraint. It takes the form of an algorithm for the prioritization of multiple biological invasions.

The main hypothesis discussed in this paper is that the institutional changes affecting the access and the use of the common pastures may weaken or strengthen the local communities according to their capacities to adapt their collective governance modalities.

Abstract: In the Global North, local inter-farm cooperation offers opportunities for farmers to better access and manage equipment, labor and material resources. Yet, its potential to pave the way to organize the local collaborations needed for the agroecological transition remains hidden. This paper, based on the experience of French farm machinery cooperatives (CUMA), shows how local inter-farm cooperation can help make farming systems more agroecological. We conclude by arguing that local inter-farm cooperation warrants more attention, both to help strengthen its development and to expand its potential for contributing to the agroecological transition.

Abstract: International audience; This article discusses the perception of ecosystem services for French and Brazilian pond fish farming. Its aim is to study the extent to which the industry and its stakeholders are aware of the existence of such services in order to be able to prioritize them with respect to social well-being. This identification phase is seldom discussed. It requires that survey questionnaires be designed so as to improve understanding of these perceptions. The surveys undertaken combined both open questions where the interviewees expressed their perceptions spontaneously and closed questions where they were invited to rank a pre-established list of the relevant services. These surveys involved 133 fish farmers and 93 stakeholders. The results show that perceptions differ by question type, and confirm the significance of the questionnaire design and the importance of combining several kinds of approach.

Abstract: International audience; This article seeks to bridge the research gap between farmland tenure management and food provisioning issues in developed countries, by focusing on concentration of agricultural production, access to land and local food supply. We conducted a qualitative study on farmland management in the northern Larzac (France), based on twenty in-depth interviews and document analysis. We distinguish six farmland management styles, i.e. local institutional arrangements encompassing organization of access to the land for farmers and relationships between land rights holders. They emerged or consolidated at three periods: a traditional commons style during the 19 th century, three collective styles implemented by farmers' organizations in the early 1980s, and two public styles on the estate of a local authority since 2010. The objective is to show that farmland management styles can serve as tools to foster local food supply, within "space-sharing strategies" based on the creation of farmland estates. In conclusion, we propose three guidelines for public decision-makers seeking, through land policies, to endorse local food provisioning: (i) include civil society organizations dealing with food issues in farmland management committees, (ii) return control of the commons to village councils, (iii) subsidize public acquisitions of land to support local food provisioning projects.

Abstract: This book aims at explaining the nature and strength of the links between the families and their farms looking at their diversity throughout the world. To do so, it documents family farming diversity by using the sustainable rural livelihood (SRL) framework exploring their ability to adapt and transform to changing environments. In 18 case studies in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, it shows how family farms resist under adverse conditions, seize new opportunities and permanently transform. Family farms, far from being backwards are potential solutions to face the current challenges and shape a new future for agriculture taking advantage of their local knowledge and capacity to cope with external constraints. Many co-authors of the book have both an empirical and theoretical experience of family farming in developed and developing countries and their related institutions. They specify «what makes and means family» in family farming and the diversity of their expertise draws a wide and original picture of this resilient way of farming throughout the world.

Abstract: In the literature and in current public discourse, innovation is usually taken to mean technological innovation, which is carried out through the figure of the entrepreneur. This editorial introduction first goes back to the emergence of the notion of social innovation, dedicated to including other processes, actors and purposes. It reminds us that the notion has been shaped by the crises that faced societies from the 1970s and presents the two fields of research that have anchored the notion in different theoretical positions. We highlight how the food and agricultural sector illustrates the three current meanings of social innovation, despite the fact that the general literature on social innovation usually focuses only on a few types of initiatives. We explain how the papers of this special issue demonstrate that agriculture and food represent an exemplary empirical terrain to push forward thinking in the field, such as the need for a better understanding of ‘social innovation in the making’ or of the processes of innovation scaling. This introduction thus not only consolidates a collection of contributions to the area of research on social innovation in the sociology of agriculture and food, but it also frames a new and potential contribution of sociology to the literature on social innovation.

Abstract: International audience; The development and improvement of methods to map agricultural land cover are currently major challenges, especially for radar images. This is due to the speckle noise nature of radar, leading to a less intensive use of radar rather than optical images. The European Space Agency Sentinel-1 constellation, which recently became operational, is a satellite system providing global coverage of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with a 6-days revisit period at a high spatial resolution of about 20 m. These data are valuable, as they provide spatial information on agricultural crops. The aim of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the capabilities of Sentinel-1 radar images for agricultural land cover mapping through the use of deep learning techniques. The analysis is carried out on multitemporal Sentinel-1 data over an area in Camargue, France. The data set was processed in order to produce an intensity radar data stack from May 2017 to September 2017. We improved this radar time series dataset by exploiting temporal filtering to reduce noise, while retaining as much as possible the fine structures present in the images. We revealed that even with classical machine learning approaches (K nearest neighbors, random forest, and support vector machines), good performance classification could be achieved with F-measure/Accuracy greater than 86% and Kappa coefficient better than 0.82. We found that the results of the two deep recurrent neural network (RNN)-based classifiers clearly outperformed the classical approaches. Finally, our analyses of the Camargue area results show that the same performance was obtained with two different RNN-based classifiers on the Rice class, which is the most dominant crop of this region, with a F-measure metric of 96%. These results thus highlight that in the near future these RNN-based techniques will play an important role in the analysis of remote sensing time series.This article belongs to the Special Issue High Resolution Image Time Series for Novel Agricultural Applications

Abstract: International audience; Rice is cultivated as staple for over half of the World's population. In Camargue (South of France) rice fields have been established on very young soils developed from historic fluvial deposits of the Rhône River. The comparison of clay mineralogy in a paddy field cultivated for 60 years and in a control shows a significant increase of the clay crystallinity in the paddy field soil, which implies a decrease of their solubility. In the paddy soils, phytoliths, poorly crystallized clays, such as smectite and to a lesser extent kaolinite, are progressively dissolved to supply Si for rice requirements. The sustainability of the crop system requires the clearing of silica exportations.
