CR and PU hidden terminals in multi-channel Cognitive MAC protocols result in increased packet drops. This is due to inefficient node synchronization with existing “Control Channel” design. To date, In-band and Out-of-band CCC based MAC protocols are proposed to avoid PU and CR hidden terminals. But, In-band CCC based CR-MAC protocols cannot efficiently resolve the hidden terminal packet drops due to imperfect node synchronization whereas out-of-band CCC based MAC is vulnerable to intruder attacks and channel saturation. To overcome this, we propose an Interference-aware hybrid CCC cognitive MAC protocol with directional RTS/CTS and data transmission. In addition, adaptive power control algorithm is proposed to avoid interference to hidden PU and CR nodes at edge coverage area. Experimental results show that proposed Hybrid cognitive MAC protocol has increased link aggregate throughput and reduced cognitive control overhead in comparison with existing CCC based CR-MAC protocols.

Most recent research on iterative solutions for interference alignment (IA) presents solutions assuming channel reciprocity based on the suppression of interference from undesired sources by using an appropriate decoding matrix also known as a receiver combining matrix for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) interference channel networks and reciprocal networks. In this paper, we present an alternative solution for IA by designing precoding and decoding matrices based on the concept of signal leakage (the measure of signal power that leaks to unintended users) on each transmit side. We propose an iterative algorithm for an IA solution based on maximization of the signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio (SLNR) of the transmitted signal from each transmitter. In order to make an algorithm removing the requirement of channel reciprocity, we deploy maximization of the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) in the design of the decoding matrices. We show through simulation that minimizing the leakage in each transmission can help achieve enhanced performance in terms of aggregate sum capacity in the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most of the current frequency hopping (FH) based dynamic spectrum access (DSA) methods concern a reactive channel access scheme with synchronous inter-channel spectrum sensing, i.e., FH is reactively triggered by the primary user (PU)'s return reported by spectrum sensing, and the PU channel to be switched to is assumed precisely just sensed or ready to be sensed, as if the inter-channel spectrum sensing moments are synchronous. However, the inter-channel spectrum sensing moments are more likely to be asynchronous, which risks PU suffering more interference. Moreover, the spectrum sensing is usually erroneous, which renders the problem more complex. To address this problem, we propose a proactive FH based DSA method against both erroneous spectrum sensing and asynchronous inter-channel spectrum sensing (moments). We term it as proactive DSA. The optimal FH sequence is obtained by dynamic programming. The complexity is also analyzed. Finally, the simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adaptive Bit Loading (ABL) in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) is often used to achieve the desired Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in wireless systems. In this paper, we discuss some of the bit loading algorithms, compare them in terms of the BER performance, and present an effective and concise Adaptive Grouped Loading (AGL) algorithm. Furthermore, we propose a "weight factor" for loading algorithm to converge rapidly to the final solution for various data rate with variable Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) gaps. In particular, we consider the bit loading in near optimal Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) based MIMO-OFDM system. While using SVD based system, the system requires perfect Channel State Information (CSI) of channel transfer function at the transmitter. This scenario of SVD based system is taken as an ideal case for the comparison of loading algorithms and to show the actual enhancement achievable by our AGL algorithm. Irrespective of the CSI requirement imposed by the mode of the system itself, ABL demands high level of feedback. Grouped Loading (GL) would reduce the feedback requirement depending upon the group size. However, this also leads to considerable degradation in BER performance. In our AGL algorithm, groups are formed with a number of consecutive sub-channels belonging to the same transmit antenna, with individual gains satisfying predefined criteria. Simulation results show that the proposed "weight factor" leads a loading algorithm to rapid convergence for various data rates with variable SNR gap values and AGL requires much lesser CSI compared to GL for the same BER performance. Cognitive Radio is an advanced enabling technology for the efficient utilization of vacant spectrum due to its ability to sense the spectrum environment. It is important to determine accurate spectrum utilization of the primary system in a cognitive radio environment. In order to define the spectrum utilization state, many CR systems use what is known as the quiet period (QP) method. However, even when using a QP, interference can occur. This causes reduced system throughput and contrary to the basic condition of cognitive radio. In order to reduce the interference time, a frequency-hopping algorithm is proposed here. Additionally, to complement the loss of throughput in the FH, a HMM-based channel prediction algorithm and a channel allocation algorithm is proposed. This paper addresses some essential problems that have to be taken into consideration in implementing the smart antenna base station (SABS) for downlink beamforming. In order to provide proper downlink beamforming as well as uplink beamforming, a pragmatic procedure of automatic calibration is proposed. Through the experimental test, we confirm that the proposed calibration technique has eliminated the problem of the phase differences of the signal path associated with each antenna. Also, in this paper, we first analyze the multipath condition under which the auxiliary pilot becomes indispensable for detecting the data transmitted on the data channel and what happens if the auxiliary pilot is not available. Then, the performance of the downlink beamforming utilizing the auxiliary pilot is analyzed through the computer simulations.
