Abstract Advancements in optical communications have increasingly focused on leveraging spatial-structured beams such as orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams for high-capacity data transmission. Conventional electronic convolutional neural networks exhibit constraints in efficiently demultiplexing OAM signals. Here, we introduce a hybrid optical-electronic convolutional neural network that is capable of completing Fourier optics convolution and realizing intensity-recognition-based demultiplexing of multiplexed OAM beams under variable simulated atmospheric turbulent conditions. The core part of our demultiplexing system includes a 4F optics system employing a Fourier optics convolution layer. This optical spatial-filtering-based convolutional neural network is utilized to realize the training and demultiplexing of the 4-bit OAM-coded signals under simulated atmospheric turbulent conditions. The current system shows a demultiplexing accuracy of 72.84% under strong turbulence scenarios with 3.2 times faster training time than all electronic convolutional neural networks.

Optical real-time data processing is advancing fields like tensor algebra acceleration, cryptography, and digital holography. This technology offers advantages such as reduced complexity through optical fast Fourier transform and passive dot-product multiplication. In this study, the proposed Reconfigurable Complex Convolution Module (RCCM) is capable of independently modulating both phase and amplitude over two million pixels. This research is relevant for applications in optical computing, hardware acceleration, encryption, and machine learning, where precise signal modulation is crucial. We demonstrate simultaneous amplitude and phase modulation of an optical two-dimensional signal in a thin lens’s Fourier plane. Utilizing two spatial light modulators (SLMs) in a Michelson interferometer placed in the focal plane of two Fourier lenses, our system enables full modulation in a 4F system’s Fourier domain. This setup addresses challenges like SLMs’ non-linear inter-pixel crosstalk and variable modulation efficiency. The integration of these technologies in the RCCM contributes to the advancement of optical computing and related fields.

Graphene, renowned for its exceptional electrical, optical, and mechanical properties, takes center stage in the realm of next-generation electronics. In this paper, we provide a thorough investigation into the comprehensive fabrication process of graphene field-effect transistors. Recognizing the pivotal role graphene quality plays in determining device performance, we explore many techniques and metrological methods to assess and ensure the superior quality of graphene layers. In addition, we delve into the intricate nuances of doping graphene and examine its effects on electronic properties. We uncover the transformative impact these dopants have on the charge carrier concentration, bandgap, and overall device performance. By amalgamating these critical facets of graphene field-effect transistors fabrication and analysis, this study offers a holistic understanding for researchers and engineers aiming to optimize the performance of graphene-based electronic devices.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between change of direction deficit (CODD), change of direction total time (CODTT), and linear sprint time and to compare the differences between CODD and CODTT in assessing an athlete’s change of direction (COD) ability. Forty-four highly trained male young athletes underwent Y-shaped pre-planned agility, Pro-agility, and 30 m linear sprint tests. The results showed a moderate to highly significant correlation between CODTT and linear speed time at 0–5 m, 0–10 m, and 0–30 m (r = 0.5–0.8), while there was no statistically significant relationship between CODD and linear speed time at 0–5 m and 0–10 m (r = 0.0–0.3). CODD and CODTT were moderate to highly correlated (r = 0.4–0.8), with CODD for 180° COD showing a higher predictive value for CODTT compared to 45° COD (14–35% vs. 49–63%). Additionally, 13–22% of the participants showed opposing results for COD ability when comparing the standardized Z-score of Pro-agility 0–10 m CODTT and CODD. Pro-agility 0–10 m CODD also resulted in a higher asymmetry ratio (2% vs. 7%) and COD ability imbalances (0% vs. 38%) than Pro-agility 0–10 m CODTT. In conclusion, CODD may provide a more accurate assessment of an athlete’s COD ability than CODTT.

Metalenses are emerging as an alternative to digital micromirror devices (DMDs), with the advantages of compactness and flexibility. The exploration of metalenses has ignited enthusiasm among optical engineers, positioning them as the forthcoming frontier in technology. In this paper, we advocate for the implementation of the phase-change material, Sb2Se3, capable of providing swift, reversible, non-volatile focusing and defocusing within the 1550 nm telecom spectrum. The lens, equipped with a robust ITO microheater, offers unparalleled functionality and constitutes a significant step toward dynamic metalenses that can be integrated with beamforming applications. After a meticulously conducted microfabrication process, we showcase a device capable of rapid tuning (0.1 MHz level) for metalens focusing and defocusing at C band communication, achieved by alternating the PCM state between the amorphous and crystalline states. The findings from the experiment show that the device has a high contrast ratio for switching of 28.7 dB.

Van der Waals (vdWs) heterostructures, assembled by stacking of two-dimensional (2D) crystal layers, have emerged as a promising new material system for high-performance optoelectronic applications, such as thin film transistors, photodetectors, and light-emitters. In this study, we showcase an innovative device that leverages strain-tuning capabilities, utilizing a MoS2/Sb2Te3 vdWs p-n heterojunction architecture designed explicitly for photodetection across the visible to near-infrared spectrum. These heterojunction devices provide ultra-low dark currents as small as 4.3 pA, a robust photoresponsivity of 0.12 A W−1, and reasonable response times characterized by rising and falling durations of 0.197 s and 0.138 s, respectively. These novel devices exhibit remarkable tunability under the application of compressive strain up to 0.3%. The introduction of strain at the heterojunction interface influences the bandgap of the materials, resulting in a significant alteration of the heterojunction’s band structure. This subsequently shifts the detector’s optical absorption properties. The proposed strategy of strain-induced engineering of the stacked 2D crystal materials allows the tuning of the electronic and optical properties of the device. Such a technique enables fine-tuning of the optoelectronic performance of vdWs devices, paving the way for tunable high-performance, low-power consumption applications. This development also holds significant potential for applications in wearable sensor technology and flexible electro-optic circuits.

While information is ubiquitously generated, shared, and analyzed in a modern-day life, there is still some controversy around the ways to assess the amount and quality of information inside a noisy optical channel. A number of theoretical approaches based on, e.g., conditional Shannon entropy and Fisher information have been developed, along with some experimental validations. Some of these approaches are limited to a certain alphabet, while others tend to fall short when considering optical beams with a nontrivial structure, such as Hermite-Gauss, Laguerre-Gauss, and other modes with a nontrivial structure. Here, we propose a new definition of the classical Shannon information via the Wigner distribution function, while respecting the Heisenberg inequality. Following this definition, we calculate the amount of information in Gaussian, Hermite-Gaussian, and Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes in juxtaposition and experimentally validate it by reconstruction of the Wigner distribution function from the intensity distribution of structured laser beams. We experimentally demonstrate the technique that allows to infer field structure of the laser beams in singular optics to assess the amount of contained information. Given the generality, this approach of defining information via analyzing the beam complexity is applicable to laser modes of any topology that can be described by well-behaved functions. Classical Shannon information, defined in this way, is detached from a particular alphabet, i.e., communication scheme, and scales with the structural complexity of the system. Such a synergy between the Wigner distribution function encompassing the information in both real and reciprocal space and information being a measure of disorder can contribute into future coherent detection algorithms and remote sensing.
