Variability observed in photometric light curves of late-type stars (on time-scales longer than a day) is a dominant noise source in exoplanet surveys and results predominantly from surface manifestations of stellar magnetic activity, namely faculae and spots. The implementation of faculae in light-curve models is an open problem, with scaling typically based on spectra equivalent to hot stellar atmospheres or assuming a solar-derived facular contrast. We modelled rotational (single period) light curves of active G2, K0, M0, and M2 stars, with Sun-like surface distributions and realistic limb-dependent contrasts for faculae and spots. The sensitivity of light-curve variability to changes in model parameters such as stellar inclination, feature area coverage, spot temperature, facular region magnetic flux density, and active band latitudes is explored. For our light-curve modelling approach we used actress , a geometrically accurate model for stellar variability. actress generates two-sphere maps representing stellar surfaces and populates them with user-prescribed spot and facular region distributions. From this, light curves can be calculated at any inclination. Quiet star limb darkening and limb-dependent facular contrasts were derived from MURaM 3D magnetoconvection simulations using ATLAS9. 1D stellar atmosphere models were used for the spot contrasts. We applied actress in Monte Carlo simulations, calculating light-curve variability amplitudes in the Kepler band. We found that, for a given spectral type and stellar inclination, spot temperature and spot area coverage have the largest effect on variability of all simulation parameters. For a spot coverage of |$1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , the typical variability of a solar-type star is around 2 parts per thousand. Summary: Background: Establishment of a cancer registry is a complex process that requires substantial resources and careful planning. There are numerous resources available to provide guidance for this, which include guidelines and frameworks of varying quality. It is the authors' goal to identify evidence‐based recommendations within the literature to help guide the process of designing a new registry with optimal efficiency, workability and data use. The objective of this study is to examine the primary literature for evidence‐based recommendations on how to design and establish a cancer registry, with a focus on literature which analyses the performance and usefulness of already established registries or guidelines. Methods: An electronic search was completed in MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMCARE, SCOPUS and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Recommendations were extracted from the identified articles and collated as themes. Results: Nine articles of varying quality were included in the review. Recommendations obtained from the literature included broad themes of the importance of clinician involvement, establishment of clear data definitions, number of variables used, inbuilt strategies to improve quality and completeness of data, considerations of costs, an 'opt‐out' strategy for ethics and privacy and flexibility of the system. Conclusion: This review concluded that there is a large gap in the primary literature for evidence‐based recommendations on the design and establishment of cancer registries. The included articles established a small scope of relevant themes, which were largely non‐specific. This area of deficiency provides an opportunity for future research, which would further strengthen the quality of current or new guidelines in cancer registry establishment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The tsunami of 26 December 2004 was responsible for the infliction of widespread death and injury across many countries bordering the Indian Ocean. In Krabi province, southern Thailand, the main provincial hospital ultimately received the bulk of the province's injured survivors including many tourists from outlying islands and beaches. This study aimed to observe the natural history of injuries and evolution of pathology following the effects of the Asian tsunami in Krabi province, with a view to gaining better understanding of the types of medical challenges that may follow in the wake of such events. Methods: A retrospective audit of patients' case notes from tsunami‐related presentations and subsequent follow‐up was gathered. Demographics and nature of injuries were collected and simple descriptive statistics were employed. Results: The majority of injuries at the time consisted of deep lacerations, fractures and aspiration syndromes and, over the first week, 1357 trauma victims were treated. Over the following weeks, public health issues were of great concern and psychiatric conditions were becoming increasingly evident, particularly depressive illnesses and post‐traumatic stress disorder. Unusual pathogens were causing complicated, polymicrobial wound infections and pneumonic conditions. The non‐Thai injured were continuing to return home to their own countries – 44 nations had people affected in this small geographical area. As the 1‐year anniversary drew close, it was evident that mental health issues were the lasting testament to the waves, not physical injury. Conclusions: As time progresses from the tsunami, the anatomical, physiological and microbial pathology has healed but the remaining social and mental pathology will be the longest lasting effect from the tsunami, the ripples of which will be felt for many years.
