Overweight and obesity increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, stroke, and some type of cancers, and maternal health globally. In Cambodia, the prevalence of overweight and obesity among women aged 15-49 years increased from 6% in 2000 to 18% in 2014, becoming a public health burden. We examined socio-demographic and behavioral factors associated with overweight and/or obesity among women of reproductive age (WRA) in Cambodia. We analyzed data from the 2014 Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey (CDHS) that used a two-stage stratified cluster sampling design. Data analysis was restricted to non-pregnant women, resulting in an analytic sample of 10,818 women. Multivariable logistic regressions were performed using STATA V16 to examine factors associated with overweight and obesity. Prevalence of overweight and obesity among non-pregnant women of reproductive age were 15.2% and 2.8% respectively. Factors independently associated with increased odds of overweight and/or obesity including women aged 20-29 years with adjusted odds ratio [AOR = 2.4; 95% CI: 1.6-3.6], 30-39 years [AOR = 4.6; 95% CI: 3.0-6.9], and 40-49 years [AOR = 6.6; 95% CI: 4.3-10.1], married women [AOR = 1.8; 95% CI: 1.3-2.7], urban residence [AOR = 1.3; 95% CI: 1.1-1.5], and women having at least 4 children [AOR = 1.7; 95% CI: 1.2-2.5]. The factors were associated with decreased odds of overweight and obesity: completed at least secondary education [AOR = 0.7; 95% CI: 0.6-0.8], agricultural work [AOR = 0.7; 95% CI: 0.5-0.8], and manual labor work [AOR = 0.7; 95% CI: 0.6-0.9]. Increased age, married women, living in urban residence, and having at least four children were the main risk factors associated with overweight and/or obesity. Conversely, higher education, working in agriculture, and working in manual labor were negatively associated with overweight and/or obesity. Cambodia's non-communicable disease (NCD) public health programs should consider these characteristic for targeting interventions to further reduce overweight and/or obesity in the coming years.

Anemia in children remains a public health concern in many resource-limited countries. To better understand child anemia in Cambodia, we examined temporal and geospatial trends of childhood anemia and used logistic regression to analyze its association with individual and household characteristics using data from the Cambodia Demographic and Health Surveys for 2005, 2010, and 2014. The prevalence of childhood anemia decreased from 62.2% in 2005 to 56.6% in 2014. The prevalence of childhood anemia was highest in Pursat (84.3%) for 2005, Kampong Thom (67%) for 2010, and Preah Vihear and Steung Treng (68.6%) for 2014. After adjusting for other variables, factors positively associated with childhood anemia included having a mother who was anemic (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.77, 95% CI: 1.58-1.97); being male vs. female (AOR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.07-1.33), underweight (AOR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.14-1.57), or stunted (AOR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.09-1.41); or having had a recent episode of fever (AOR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.03-1.31). Children were less likely to have anemia if they were older than 12 months. They were also less likely to have anemia if they were from a wealthier household (AOR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.50-0.84) or had taken medications for intestinal parasites (AOR = 0.86; 95% CI: 0.89-0.93). These associations were generally consistent across time and space. Public health interventions and policies to alleviate anemia should be prioritized to address these factors across geospatial divides. Anemia remains highly prevalent among children aged 6-59 months in Cambodia.

Anemia is a major public health problem for thirty-two million pregnant women worldwide. Anemia during pregnancy is a leading cause of child low birth weight, preterm birth, and perinatal/neonatal mortality. Pregnant women are at higher risk of anemia due to micronutrient deficiencies, hemoglobinopathies, infections, socio-demographic and behavioral factors. This study aimed to: 1) assess temporal and geospatial trends of anemia in Cambodia and 2) identify factors associated with anemia among pregnant women aged 15-49 years old in Cambodia. We analyzed data from the Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey (CDHS) for 2005, 2010, and 2014. Data were pooled across the three survey years for all pregnant women aged 15-49 years. Survey weights were applied to account for the complex survey design of the CDHS. Descriptive statistics were estimated for key sociodemographic characteristics of the study population. We used logistic regressions to assess factors associated with anemia among pregnant women aged 15-49 years old. Anemia in pregnant women aged 15-49 in Cambodia decreased from 56% in 2005 to 53% in 2014. With the highest in Preah Vihear and Stung Treng provinces (74.3%), in Kratie province (73%), and in Prey Veng (65.4%) in 2005, 2010, and 2014 respectively. Compared to pregnant women from the wealthiest households, women from poorest households were more likely to have anemia (AOR = 2.8; 95% CI: 1.6-4.9). Pregnant women from coastal regions were almost twice as likely of having anemia (AOR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.2-3.0). Pregnant women were more likely anemic if they were in their 2nd trimester (AOR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.9-3.6) or 3rd trimester (AOR = 1.6 95% CI: 1.1-2.3). Anemia remains highly prevalent among pregnant women in Cambodia. Public health interventions and policies to alleviate anemia should be prioritized and shaped to address these factors.

Understanding community members' knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and prevention is essential for directing public health interventions to reduce disease spread and improve vaccination coverage. Here, we describe knowledge of COVID-19 transmission, prevention, and symptoms among community residents in Mozambique. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 33,087 households in a Health and Demographic Surveillance System in Manhiça, Mozambique. Participants were recruited in April 2021 before the Delta variant wave to the peak of Omicron cases in February 2022. Principal components analysis was used to create scores representing knowledge of COVID-19 symptoms, transmission, and prevention. Multiple imputation and quasi-Poisson regression were used to examine associations between demographic characteristics and sources of COVID-19 information, and knowledge of COVID-19 symptoms, transmission, and prevention. We examined whether sources of COVID-19 information mediated the relationship between educational attainment and knowledge of symptoms, transmission, and prevention. Across this rural community, 98.2%, 97.0%, and 85.1% of respondents reported knowing how COVID-19 could be prevented, that SARS-CoV-2 can cause disease, and how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted, respectively. The most recognized COVID-19 symptoms were cough (51.2%), headaches (44.9%), and fever (44.5%); transmission mechanisms were saliva droplets (50.5%) or aerosol (46.9%) from an infected person; and prevention measures were handwashing (91.9%) and mask-wearing (91.8%). Characteristics associated with greater knowledge of symptoms, transmission, and prevention included having at least primary education, older age, employment, higher wealth, and Christian religion. Respondents who had experienced COVID-19 symptoms were also more likely to possess knowledge of symptoms, transmission, and prevention. Receiving information from television, WhatsApp, radio, and hospital, mediated the relationship between educational attainment and knowledge scores. These findings support the need for outreach and for community-engaged messaging to promote prevention measures, particularly among people with low education.

Abstract Background Although HIV prevalence in Cambodia has declined to 0.6% among the general population, the prevalence remains high among female sex workers (14.0%) and men who have sex with men (2.3%). Over the past 10 years, the number of people who use drugs (PWUDs) has increased considerably. PWUDs, especially people who inject drugs (PWIDs), who have multiple sex partners or unprotected sex contribute to a higher HIV prevalence. This paper aims to estimate the prevalence of HIV across PWUD groups and to identify factors associated with HIV infection. Methods Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) was used to recruit 1626 consenting PWUDs in 9 provinces in 2012. Questionnaires and blood specimens were collected. HIV prevalence estimates were calculated using RDSAT 7.1. Individual weightings for HIV were generated with RDSAT and used for a weighted analysis in STATA 13. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the independent factors associated with HIV prevalence. Results Most of the PWUDs were men (82.0%), and 7.3% were PWIDs. Non-PWIDs, especially users of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), represented the larger proportion of the participants (81.5%). The median age for of the PWUDs was 24.0 years (IQR: 20–29). The HIV prevalence among the PWUDs was 5.1% (95% CI: 4.1–6.2), 24.8%, among PWIDs and 4.0% among non-PWIDs. The HIV prevalence among female PWIDs was 37.5, and 22.5% among male PWIDs. Four factors were independently associated with HIV infection: female sex, with AOR = 7.8 (95% CI: 3.00–20.35); age groups 21–29 and older (AOR = 10.3, 95% CI: 1.2–20.4); and using drugs for ≥12 months (AOR = 4.0, 95% CI: 1.38–11.35). Finally, injecting drugs remained a strong predictor of HIV infection, with an AOR = 4.1 (95% CI: 1.53–10.96). Conclusion HIV prevalence remains high among PWIDs. Harm reduction efforts, such as needle and syringe provision programs, must improve their coverage. Innovative strategies are needed to reach sub-groups of PWUDs, especially women who inject drugs. Furthermore, the large proportion of non-PWIDs, especially ATS users, should not be ignored. Therefore, combined HIV prevention and harm reduction programs should integrate ATS users.

This study examined coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prevention knowledge among community residents in Eastern Ethiopia to support public health interventions and vaccination coverage. A cross-sectional survey in August-September 2021 recruited 880 participants from households in a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Harari and Oromia, Ethiopia. Participants were randomly selected and interviewed in person using tablets and a standardized questionnaire. Principal components analysis was used to create a score representing COVID-19 prevention knowledge. Quasi-Poisson regression was used to examine associations between demographic characteristics and COVID-19 prevention knowledge. The survey also assessed awareness of community/government COVID-19 prevention measures and healthcare services for under-5 children and pregnant women. The most cited COVID-19 prevention measures were handwashing with soap (91.5%) and wearing facemasks (89.2%); least mentioned were avoiding travel (22.2%) and wearing medical gloves (20.3%). Commonly recognized community/government measures included school closures (77.0%), avoiding gatherings (75.2%), and staying home (62.3%). Data collection was implemented through an initiative by the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Network to assess whether lockdowns and other social distancing policies during COVID-19 had implications for household economic status, maternal and child health, and healthcare accessibility for pregnant women and children. The data were collected from April 2021 until February 2022 from a population living in a rural community of Mozambique. This rural community is located within a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) that operates in the Manhiça district of Maputo province. The survey instrument used for data collection was specifically designed to examine household awareness, knowledge, and prevalence of COVID-19; it was also designed to document hardships experienced by households during the pandemic period such as food insecurity, job losses and/or business closures of household members, and access to healthcare. The data are generalizable to a contiguous community in Manhiça, Mozambique of approximately 200,000 inhabitants.

Data were gathered through a collaborative initiative to investigate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdowns on child and maternal health, economic hardships, and access to care for children and pregnant women by the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Network. The data were gathered in Bamako, the capital city of Mali (population ∼2.9 million) between August and September of 2022 through a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS). Data collectors used a survey instrument specifically designed to measure household awareness, knowledge, and prevalence of COVID-19, as well as hardships that households experienced since the onset of the pandemic in March of 2020. The data are from two neighborhoods of Bamako, Banconi and Djicoroni; the Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) operating in these neighborhoods tracks the health of approximately 235,000 inhabitants. The data were collected using a stratified random sample of 454 households.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with widespread social disruptions, as governments implemented lockdowns to quell disease spread. To advance knowledge of consequences for households in resource-limited countries, we examine food insecurity during the pandemic period. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study and used logistic regression to examine factors associated with food insecurity. Data were collected between August and September of 2021 through a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) using a survey instrument focused on knowledge regarding the spread of COVID-19; food availability; COVID-19 related shocks/coping; under-five child healthcare services; and healthcare services for pregnant women. The study is set in two communities in Eastern Ethiopia, one rural (Kersa) and one urban (Harar), and included a random sample of 880 households. Results Roughly 16% of households reported not having enough food to eat during the pandemic, an increase of 6% since before the pandemic. After adjusting for other variables, households were more likely to report food insecurity if they were living in an urban area, were a larger household, had a family member lose employment, reported an increase in food prices, or were food insecure before the pandemic. Households were less likely to report food insecurity if they were wealthier or had higher household income. Conclusions After taking individual and household level sociodemographic characteristics into consideration, households in urban areas were at higher risk for food insecurity. These findings suggest a need for expanding food assistance programs to more urban areas to help mitigate the impact of lockdowns on more vulnerable households.

Abstract Background COVID-19 resulted in enormous disruption to life around the world. To quell disease spread, governments implemented lockdowns that likely created hardships for households. To improve knowledge of consequences, we examine how the pandemic period was associated with household hardships and assess factors associated with these hardships. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using quasi-Poisson regression to examine factors associated with household hardships. Data were collected between August and September of 2021 from a random sample of 880 households living within a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) located in the Harari Region and the District of Kersa, both in Eastern Ethiopia. Results Having a head of household with no education, residing in a rural area, larger household size, lower income and/or wealth, and community responses to COVID-19, including lockdowns and travel restrictions, were independently associated with experiencing household hardships. Conclusions Our results identify characteristics of groups at-risk for household hardships during the pandemic; these findings may inform efforts to mitigate the consequences of COVID-19 and future disease outbreaks.

Abstract The influence of human harvest on evolution of secondary sexual characteristics has implications for sustainable management of wildlife populations. The phenotypic consequences of selectively removing males with large horns or antlers from ungulate populations have been a topic of heightened concern in recent years. Harvest can affect size of horn‐like structures in two ways: (a) shifting age structure toward younger age classes, which can reduce the mean size of horn‐like structures, or (b) selecting against genes that produce large, fast‐growing males. We evaluated effects of age, climatic and forage conditions, and metrics of harvest on horn size and growth of mountain sheep (Ovis canadensis ssp.) in 72 hunt areas across North America from 1981 to 2016. In 50% of hunt areas, changes in mean horn size during the study period were related to changes in age structure of harvested sheep. Environmental conditions explained directional changes in horn growth in 28% of hunt areas, 7% of which did not exhibit change before accounting for effects of the environment. After accounting for age and environment, horn size of mountain sheep was stable or increasing in the majority (~78%) of hunt areas. Age‐specific horn size declined in 44% of hunt areas where harvest was regulated solely by morphological criteria, which supports the notion that harvest practices that are simultaneously selective and intensive might lead to changes in horn growth. Nevertheless, phenotypic consequences are not a foregone conclusion in the face of selective harvest; over half of the hunt areas with highly selective and intensive harvest did not exhibit age‐specific declines in horn size. Our results demonstrate that while harvest regimes are an important consideration, horn growth of harvested male mountain sheep has remained largely stable, indicating that changes in horn growth patterns are an unlikely consequence of harvest across most of North America.

The ``Community Recovery after a Natural Disaster: A Survey of Communities Affected by Mt. Merapi Eruptions'' data that are described herein were gathered 16 months after the 2010 Mt. Merapi volcanic eruptions in Central Java, Indonesia. Data collection was organized as a pilot effort to document victim experiences of the disaster; including disaster preparation, mitigation, and recovery. Three-stage clustered random sampling was conducted to create a sample that was representative of varying levels of destruction experienced by victims of the eruptions as well as one that included respondents who were still living in a disaster shelter, who had returned to their previous community, and who had moved on to a new community. By drawing respondents from 10 different villages or shelter communities, a total respondent sample of 400 was collected.
