Abstract This work studied the thermal stability, electrical, and thermoelectrical properties of copper(I) selenide, Cu2Se synthesized by high-energy milling in a planetary ball mill. The phase composition was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The conversion of the precursors during mechanochemical synthesis and the stability of the product was monitored by thermal analysis. The dependence of electrical properties on the product porosity was observed. For the densification of Cu2Se, the method of spark plasma sintering was applied to prepare suitable samples for thermoelectric characterization. High-temperature thermoelectric properties of synthetic Cu2Se were compared to its natural analogue-mineral berzelianite in terms of its potential application in energy conversion. Based on the results a relatively high figure-of-merit, ZT parameter (~ 1.15, T = 770 K) was obtained for undoped Cu2Se, prepared by rapid mechanochemical reaction (5 min). Cyclic voltammetry measurements of Na/NaClO4/Cu2Se cell implied that mechanochemically synthesized Cu2Se could be used as a promising intercalation electrode for sodium-ion batteries.

This paper presents an experimental study of partial discharge activity in ferrofluids based on biodegradable transformer oil and iron oxide nanoparticles. Three ferrofluid samples with low, medium and high nanoparticle concentrations are employed in the research. The basic ferrofluid characterization is followed by a partial discharge experiment exposing the ferrofluids to a high voltage in a needle-plate electrode configuration. The analysis confirms that the apparent charge and number of discharges decrease with increasing nanoparticle concentration. These findings are interpreted with reference to the well-recognised electro-hydrodynamic streamer model. The charge trapping by nanoparticles hinders the ionization and discharge development. The study also focuses on the partial discharge activity in the ferrofluids under the action of a static magnetic field acting perpendicularly to the electric field. A decreasing trend in the number of discharges due to the magnetic field is revealed. A qualitative explanation is provided based on the field-induced cluster formation and charge mobility reduction. The presented experiment and the discussed findings may be valuable for practical application of the ferrofluid in high voltage equipment with a special need for partial discharge suppression.

This study focuses on the dielectric relaxation response of insulating liquids based on mineral oil and synthetic ester in a thermal field.The research also offers the dielectric relaxation response of the magnetic nanofluid based on the investigated synthetic ester. The reason for investigating the synthetic ester-based nanofluid is that the temperature characteristics of the mineral oil-based magnetic nanofluid have already been investigated in several studies. Nanofluid based on synthetic ester is not sufficiently explored in this regard. The behavior of insulating liquids in the thermal field is divided into two parts. The first one points to the effect of temperature on the dielectric properties of the insulating liquids in the range from 293.15 K to 363.15 K. The insulating liquids show relaxation processes in the investigated frequency spectrum (1 mHz–3 kHz), which are dependent on temperature. The logarithm of the relaxation frequency decreases linearly with decreasing temperature according to Arrhenius' law. Mineral oil has the highest value of activation energy. In the second part, the results are focused on the influence of the rate of temperature increase on the dielectric parameters and moisture content of the investigated fluids. A slower increase in temperature causes an increase in polarization losses and a reduction in the distribution of relaxation times. In the case of base oils, also a reduction in activation energy. The change in the heating rate of the investigated liquids does not affect their moisture. Changes in dielectric parameters are not caused by changes in the moisture of insulating liquids, but by thermal aging.

An experimental study of the absorption of high energy pulses in bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) capacitors is reported in the paper. The pulse handling performance test is used to identify the material or mechanical problem characteristics developed in the capacitor. The experiments are focused on samples of different film metallization and crystallinity and the results are compared in terms of current pulse handling capability as well as the level of impulse breakdown voltage. To assess the impulse handling capability, the proposed deterioration parameter is the number of absorbed pulses and Weibull cumulative probability of failure is presented. Experimental findings reveal specific types of failure development through the gradually elevated energy pulse test. The observed failures are either accidental, or progressive and they are located at the electrode terminal, or in the capacitor volume. The accidental failures are accompanied by no significant change in the additionally measured capacitance and loss factor, however, the characteristic fault location is in the capacitor volume. The progressive failure is caused by the gradual degradation of the insulating material where both the capacitance and the loss factor give a preliminary information of the impending damage, dominantly occurring at the electrode terminals. Possible reasons accounting for the certain failure type are discussed.

Anthropogenic electromagnetic radiation is an important environmental factor affecting the functionality of biological systems. Sensitivity to various frequencies of electromagnetic radiation has been detected in ixodid ticks in the past. However, the physiological aspects of radiation effects have not yet been studied in ticks. In the presented experiment, 360 Ixodes ricinus ticks, 180 males and 180 females, were divided into 16 irradiated and 8 control groups. The irradiated groups were exposed to two different intensities of electromagnetic radiation with a frequency of 900 MHz at different lengths of exposure time. RT-PCR was utilized to determine the changes in mRNA levels in tick synganglia after irradiation. Four randomly selected neuropeptide genes were tested—allatotropin (at), FGLa-related allatostatins (fgla/ast), kinin, and arginine-vasopressin-like peptide (avpl). A significant decrease in transcript levels in all female groups exposed to higher intensity radiofrequency radiation for 1 to 3 h was found. After one hour of radiofrequency exposure, a significant downregulation in allatotropin expression in males was detected. A consistent downregulation of the at gene was detected in males irradiated with at a higher intensity. Unfortunately, the specific functions of the studied neuropeptides in ticks are not known yet, so a more comprehensive study is necessary to describe the effects of EMF on observed neuropeptides. This study represents the first report on the effects of the abiotic environment on tick neurophysiology.

This work solves the comparison of two different thermal stress times for selected liquid insulation materials based on transformer oils by impedance spectroscopy. Research is focused on actual and progressive liquid insulation materials. The scientific objectives of the experiment are focused on the determination of hypotheses, defined by predictable electrophysical parameters in experimental conditions, which are described in the analysis of the measured results.

According to the latest research, nanofluids as a possible future substitution for high-voltage equipment insulation have the potential to enhance the heat transfer and insulation properties of their base fluids. Dielectric properties are represented by breakdown strength (AC, DC, lightning) and dielectric performance as a set of quantities including dissipation factor, permittivity, and volume resistivity. In this study, natural and synthetic esters were mixed with C60 nanoparticles. Samples were examined for dissipation factor, relative permittivity, and volume resistivity at temperatures between 25 °C and 140 °C to monitor changes in dielectric performance with rising temperature, in accordance with IEC 60247. In addition, the samples were tested for AC breakdown voltage (using mushroom-like electrodes with a gap distance of 1 mm) and evaluated using the Weibull distribution statistical method. These measurements allowed complex evaluation of the examined mixtures and the determination of optimal concentration for each ester-based nanofluid.

The modell examines the effect of electric vehicle charging on the stability of distribution network operation. In addition to the chargers, the modell also features renewable sources, which are an inseparable part of the smart grid.

Nickel mono- (NiSe) and diselenide (NiSe2) were produced from stoichiometric mixtures of powdered Ni and Se precursors by the one-step, undemanding mechanochemical reactions. The process was carried out by high-energy milling for 30 and 120 min in a planetary ball mill. The kinetics of the reactions were documented, and the products were studied in terms of their crystal structure, morphology, electrical, and optical properties. X-ray powder diffraction confirmed that NiSe has hexagonal and NiSe2 cubic crystal structure with an average crystallite size of 10.5 nm for NiSe and 13.3 nm for NiSe2. Their physical properties were characterized by the specific surface area measurements and particle size distribution analysis. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the prepared materials contain nanoparticles of irregular shape, which are agglomerated into clusters of about 1–2 μm in diameter. The first original values of electrical conductivity, resistivity, and sheet resistance of nickel selenides synthesized by milling were measured. The obtained bandgap energy values determined using UV–Vis spectroscopy confirmed their potential use in photovoltaics. Photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed weak luminescence activity of the materials. Such synthesis of nickel selenides can easily be carried out on a large scale by milling in an industrial mill, as was verified earlier for copper selenide synthesis.

Mobile telecommunications technologies have become an indispensable part of people’s lives of all ages around the world. They affect personal life and social interactions and are a work tool in the work routine. Network availability requirements and the quality of the Internet connection are constantly increasing, to which telecommunications providers are responding. Humans and wildlife live in the permanent presence of electromagnetic radiation with just a minor knowledge of the impact this radiation has. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of a 900 MHz electromagnetic field (EMF) on the locomotor behavior of female Ixodes ricinus ticks under laboratory conditions. Experiments were performed in the radiation-shielded tube (RST) test and radiation-shielded circular open-field arena placed in an anechoic chamber. Altogether, 480 female I. ricinus ticks were tested. In the RST arena, no differences in preference for irradiated and shielded parts of experimental modules were observed; in the open-field arena, the time spent and the trajectory passed was significantly longer in the part exposed to the EMF.

The motivation to improve components in electric power equipment brings new proposals from world-renowned scientists to strengthen them in operation. An essential part of every electric power equipment is its insulation system, which must have the best possible parameters. The current problem with mineral oil replacement is investigating and testing other alternative electrical insulating liquids. In this paper, we present a comparison of mineral and hydrocarbon oil (liquefied gas) in terms of conductivity and relaxation mechanisms in the complex plane of the Cole-Cole diagram and dielectric losses. We perform the comparison using the method of dielectric relaxation spectroscopy in the frequency domain at different intensities of the time-varying electric field 0.5 kV/m, 5 kV/m, and 50 kV/m. With the increasing intensity of the time-varying electric field, there is a better approximation of the Debye behavior in all captured polarization processes of the investigated oils. By comparing the distribution of relaxation times, mineral oil shows closer characteristics to Debye relaxation. From the point of view of dielectric losses at the main frequency, hydrocarbon oil achieves better dielectric properties at all applied intensities of the time-varying electric field, which is very important for practical use.

This review is focused on the research of dielectric fluids, especially commonly used power transformer oils enhanced by nanoparticles, i.e., nanofluids. There are differences between various combinations of base fluids and nanoparticles prepared in different ways. The main goal of this review was to present recent research in this field sorted by the used nanoparticles. Nanofluids based on mineral oils, natural, or synthetic esters were investigated in terms of the nature of nanoparticles, particularly Al2O3, TiO2, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, graphene, fullerene, and others. The combinations of environmentally friendly oils and nanoparticles were presented. Finally, the article focused on the description of current dielectric fluids usable in power transformers and the possibilities of improving new and existing fluids with nanoparticles, especially their physical, dielectric, and chemical properties, but with regard to environmental aspects.

Copper(II) selenide, CuSe was prepared from Cu and Se powders in a stoichiometric ratio by a rapid, and convenient one-step mechanochemical synthesis, after 5 and 10 min of milling in a planetary, and an industrial vibratory, mill. The kinetics of the synthesis, and the structural, morphological, optical, and electrical properties of CuSe products prepared in the two types of mill were studied. Their crystal structure, physical properties, and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area measurements, particle size distribution, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The products crystallized in a hexagonal crystal structure. However, a small amount of orthorhombic phase was also identified. The scanning electron microscopy revealed that both products consist of agglomerated particles of irregular shape, forming clusters with a size ~50 μm. Transmission electron microscopy proved the nanocrystalline character of the CuSe particles. The optical properties were studied using UV–Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The determined band gap energies of 1.6 and 1.8 eV for the planetary- and vibratory-milled product, respectively, were blue-shifted relative to the bulk CuSe. CuSe prepared in the vibratory mill had lower resistivity and higher conductivity, which corresponds to its larger crystallite size in comparison with CuSe prepared in the planetary mill.
