Atomic monolayers on semiconductor surfaces represent a new class of functional quantum materials at the ultimate two-dimensional limit, ranging from superconductors [1, 2] to Mott insulators [3, 4] and ferroelectrics [5] to quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHI) [6, 7]. A case in point is the recently discovered QSHI indenene [7, 8], a triangular monolayer of indium epitaxially grown on SiC(0001), exhibiting a $\sim$120meV gap and substrate-matched monodomain growth on the technologically relevant $\mu$m scale [9]. Its suitability for room-temperature spintronics is countered, however, by the instability of pristine indenene in air, which destroys the system along with its topological character, nullifying hopes of ex-situ processing and device fabrication. Here we show how indenene intercalation into epitaxial graphene offers effective protection from the oxidizing environment, while it leaves the topological character fully intact. This opens an unprecedented realm of ex-situ experimental opportunities, bringing this monolayer QSHI within realistic reach of actual device fabrication and edge channel transport.

We report growth of CuMnSb thin films by molecular beam epitaxy on InAs(001) substrates. The CuMnSb layers are compressively strained ($0.6~\text{%}$) due to lattice mismatch. The thin films have a $\omega$ full width half max of $7.7^{''}$ according to high resolution X-ray diffraction, and a root mean square roughness of $0.14~\text{nm}$ as determined by atomic force microscopy. Magnetic and electrical properties are found to be consistent with reported values from bulk samples. We find a N\'eel temperature of $62~\text{K}$, a Curie-Weiss temperature of $-65~\text{K}$ and an effective moment of $5.9~\mu_{\text{B}}/\text{f.u.}$. Transport measurements confirm the antiferromagetic transition and show a residual resistivity at $4~\text{K}$ of $35~\mu\Omega\cdot \text{cm}$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted in PRM

While the advanced coherent control of qubits is now routinely carried out in low frequency (GHz) systems like single spins, it is far more challenging to achieve for two-level systems in the optical domain. This is because the latter evolve typically in the THz range, calling for tools of ultrafast, coherent, nonlinear optics. Using four-wave mixing micro-spectroscopy, we here measure the optically driven dynamics of a single exciton quantum state confined in a semiconductor quantum dot. In a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we reveal the intrinsic Rabi oscillation dynamics by monitoring both central exciton quantities, i.e., its occupation and the microscopic coherence, as resolved by the four-wave mixing technique. In the frequency domain this oscillation generates the Autler-Townes splitting of the light-exciton dressed states, directly seen in the four-wave mixing spectra. We further demonstrate that the coupling to acoustic phonons strongly influences the FWM dynamics on the picosecond timescale, because it leads to transitions between the dressed states., Comment: accepted for publication in Optica

Boson sampling is a problem intractable for classical computers, but can be naturally solved on a specialized photonic quantum simulator which requires less resources than building a universal quantum computer. The biggest challenge to implement boson sampling with a large number of photons has been the lack of reliable single-photon sources. Here we demonstrate a scalable architecture of boson sampling using a solid-state single-photon source with simultaneously high efficiency, purity, and indistinguishability. The single photons are time-bin encoded and interfered in an electrically programmable loop-based network. We implement and validate boson sampling with input three and four single photons, and track the dynamical multi-photon evolution inside the circuit. With further refinement of the system efficiency, our approach may be feasible to be scaled up to >20-boson sampling to outperform classical computers, and thus provide experimental evidence against the Extended Church-Turing Thesis., 12 pages, 4 figures, additional references added

Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, well-known for revolutionising photonic science, has been realised primarily in fermionic systems including widely applied diode lasers. The prerequisite for fermionic lasing is the inversion of electronic population, which governs the lasing threshold. More recently, bosonic lasers have also been developed based on Bose-Einstein condensates of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. These electrically neutral bosons coexist with charged electrons and holes. In the presence of magnetic fields, the charged particles are bound to their cyclotron orbits, while the neutral exciton-polaritons move freely. We demonstrate how magnetic fields affect dramatically the phase diagram of mixed Bose-Fermi systems, switching between fermionic lasing, incoherent emission and bosonic lasing regimes in planar and pillar microcavities with optical and electrical pumping. We collected and analyzed the data taken on pillar and planar microcavity structures at continuous wave and pulsed optical excitation as well as injecting electrons and holes electronically. Our results evidence the transition from a Bose gas to a Fermi liquid mediated by magnetic fields and light-matter coupling. Publisher PDF

The recent progress in integrated quantum optics has set the stage for the development of an integrated platform for quantum information processing with photons, with potential applications in quantum simulation. Among the different material platforms being investigated, direct-bandgap semiconductors and particularly gallium arsenide (GaAs) offer the widest range of functionalities, including single- and entangled-photon generation by radiative recombination, low-loss routing, electro-optic modulation and single-photon detection. Efficient single photon collection is demonstrated based on a μ-fiber-coupled photonic crystal cavity. 249 kHz of single photons are detected, and estimated single photon count rate (overall collection efficiency) is 20 MHz (25 %). Postprint

The implementation and engineering of bright and coherent solid state quantum light sources is key for the realization of both on chip and remote quantum networks. Despite tremendous efforts for more than 15 years, the combination of these two key prerequisites in a single, potentially scalable device is a major challenge. Here, we report on the observation of bright and coherent single photon emission generated via pulsed, resonance fluorescence conditions from a single quantum dot (QD) deterministically centered in a micropillar cavity device via cryogenic optical lithography. The brightness of the QD fluorescence is greatly enhanced on resonance with the fundamental mode of the pillar, leading to an overall device efficiency of $\eta=(74\pm4)~\%$ for a single photon emission as pure as $g^{(2)}(0)=0.0092\pm0.0004$. The combination of large Purcell enhancement and resonant pumping conditions allows us to observe a two-photon wave packet overlap up to $\nu=(88\pm3)~\%$, Comment: submitted

Highly efficient single-photon sources (SPS) can increase the secure key rate of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems compared to conventional attenuated laser systems. Here we report on a free space QKD test using an electrically driven quantum dot single-photon source (QD SPS) that does not require a separate laser setup for optical pumping and thus allows for a simple and compact SPS QKD system. We describe its implementation in our 500 m free space QKD system in downtown Munich. Emulating a BB84 protocol operating at a repetition rate of 125 MHz, we could achieve sifted key rates of 5-17 kHz with error ratios of 6-9% and g((2))(0)-values of 0.39-0.76. Publisher PDF

We report on the condensation of microcavity exciton polaritons under optical excitation in a microcavity with four embedded InGaAs quantum wells. The polariton laser is characterized by a distinct nonlinearity in the input-output-characteristics, which is accompanied by a drop of the emission linewidth indicating temporal coherence and a characteristic persisting emission blueshift with increased particle density. The temporal coherence of the device at threshold is underlined by a characteristic drop of the second order coherence function to a value close to 1. Furthermore an external electric field is used to switch between polariton regime, polariton condensate and photon lasing.

We report on in-lab free space quantum key distribution (QKD) experiments over 40 cm distance using highly efficient electrically driven quantum dot single-photon sources emitting in the red as well as near-infrared spectral range. In the case of infrared emitting devices, we achieve sifted key rates of 27.2 kbit s(-1)(35.4 kbit s(-1)) at a quantum bit error rate (QBER) of 3.9% (3.8%) and a g((2))(0) value of 0.35 (0.49) at moderate (high) excitation. The red emitting diodes generate sifted keys at a rate of 95.0 kbit s(-1) at a QBER of 4.1% and a g((2))(0) value of 0.49. This first successful proof of principle QKD experiment based on electrically operated semiconductor single-photon sources can be considered as a major step toward practical and efficient quantum cryptography scenarios. Biologically relevant exposure to environmental pollutants often shows a non-linear relationship. For their assessment, as a rule short term concentrations have to be determined instead of long term mean values. This is also the case for the perception of odour. Regulatory dispersion models like AUSTAL2000 calculate long term mean concentration values (one-hour), but provide no information on the fluctuation from this mean. The ratio between a short term mean value (relevant for odour perception) and the long term mean value (calculated by the dispersion model), called the peak-to-mean value, is usually used to describe these fluctuations. In general, this ratio can be defined in different ways. M\"uller et al. (2012), in a comment to Schauberger et al. (2012) which includes a statement that AUSTAL2000 uses a constant factor of 4, argue that AUSTAL2000 does not apply a peak-to-mean factor and does not calculate odour exceedance probabilities. Instead it calculates the frequency of so-called odour-hours by applying the relation between the 90-percentile of the instantaneous concentration and the hourly mean (Janicke and Janicke, 2007a), not between some peak value and the mean. According to Janicke and Janicke (2007a), the 90-percentile of the instantaneous concentration can in practice be estimated with sufficient accuracy from the hourly mean by using a factor of 4. Having so far replied to M\"uller et al. (2012) we take additionally the opportunity to elaborate a little more on the peak-to-mean concept, especially pointing out that a constant factor independent of the stability of the atmosphere, the distance from and the geometry of the source, is not appropriate. Future communication and computation technologies that exploit quantum information require robust and well-isolated qubits. Electron spins in III-V semiconductor quantum dots, while promising candidates, see their dynamics limited by undesirable hysteresis and decohering effects of the nuclear spin bath. Replacing electrons with holes should suppress the hyperfine interaction and consequently eliminate strong nuclear effects. Using picosecond optical pulses, we demonstrate coherent control of a single hole qubit and examine both free-induction and spin-echo decay. In moving from electrons to holes, we observe significantly reduced hyperfine interactions, evidenced by the reemergence of hysteresis-free dynamics, while obtaining similar coherence times, limited by non-nuclear mechanisms.
