However, current therapeutic options for corneal pain are limited. In this study, we synthesized a novel quaternary ammonium compound, N-propylamiodarone bromide (NPA), and employed a rodent model of corneal injury to investigate whether NPA offers prolonged corneal analgesia through transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel-mediated selective cellular entry, without hindering corneal epithelial recovery.Methods: In the corneal injury model, 24 adult Wistar rats received a topical application of normal saline, oxybuprocaine, or NPA (n = 8 each), and corneal pain sensitivity was assessed using the von Frey technique. Another set of 32 rats with intact corneas received oxybuprocaine, capsaicin (a TRPV1 agonist), or NPA with or without capsaicin (n = 8 each), followed by a mechanical sensitivity evaluation. Potential adverse effects on normal epithelial recovery were evaluated using fluorescence and hematoxylin–eosin staining in an additional 8 rats with corneal injury.Results: In the corneal injury model, NPA produced significantly longer-lasting analgesia than oxybuprocaine (duration of the maximum effect: 215 ± 11 vs 25 ± 2 min, P < 0.001). None of the animals presented any signs of eye irritability. In contrast to injured eyes, NPA alone did not significantly increase mechanical sensitivity in naïve eyes. However, the co-administration of NPA and capsaicin produced significantly longer-lasting corneal anesthesia than oxybuprocaine (duration of the maximum effect: 165 ± 15 vs 31 ± 2 min, P < 0.001). NPA did not hamper wound healing.Conclusion: The novel quaternary ammonium NPA produced long-lasting analgesia against corneal injury without hampering corneal recovery, suggesting that it is a potential candidate for analgesic medicine targeting corneal pain.Keywords: analgesics, capsaicin, corneal injury, pain, TRPV1 channel

Few reports on raising headache awareness in the general public have been reported, and there are no reports on headache awareness campaigns through social networking services (SNS), or social media, in Japan. We prospectively performed a headache awareness campaign from March 2022 through 2 SNS, targeting nurse and wind instrumental musicians, because they are with high headache prevalence.Methods: Through the 2 SNS, the article and video were distributed, respectively. The article and video described the 6 important topics for the general public about headaches, which were described in the Clinical Practice Guideline for Headache Disorders 2021. Just after reading or watching them as e-learning, we performed online questionnaire sheets to investigate the awareness of the 6 topics through the 2 SNS. The awareness of the 6 topics before and after the campaign was evaluated.Results: In the SNS nurse-senka, we obtained 1191 responses. Women comprised 94.4%, and the median (range) age was 45 (20 to 71) years old. Headache sufferers were 63.8%, but only 35.1% had consulted doctors. In the SNS Creatone, we got the response from 134 professional musicians, with 77.3% of women. The largest number of respondents were in their 20s (range 18– 60 years old). Headache sufferers were 87.9%. Of them, 36.4% had consulted doctors, 24.2% were medication-overuse headache. The ratios of individuals who were aware of the 6 topics significantly increased from 15.2%-47.0% to 80.4– 98.7% after the online questionnaire in both SNS (p < 0.001, all).Conclusion: E-learning and online survey via SNS can improve headache awareness.Keywords: awareness, education, medication-overuse headache, migraine, online, prevention, social networking services, social media

Participants in this study were patients with glaucoma who were scheduled to receive any type of PGTFC for the first time. The participants answered a questionnaire on the day of PGTFC introduction and again at a return visit 4–6 weeks after PGTFC introduction. The physicians in charge were asked to complete a separate questionnaire on the day of PGTFC introduction. One of two leaflets was randomly delivered to each participant before the description of the PGTFC. One leaflet explained how to correctly instill the eye drops, and the other explained the clinical meaning of intraocular pressure reduction in addition to explaining how to correctly instill the eye drops. Nonadherence was defined as forgetting to instill the eye drops one or more times during the week before the return visit.Results: In total, 3,597 patients (age, 68.4±12.2 years) met the study protocol requirements. This clinical case report presents a new technique for reconstructing the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the alveolar ridge using a mandibular bone block at sites planned for single implants. Augmentation was eased with the use of a mandibular bone block, which was shaped after placement with a round bur to passively fit the dimensions of the defect, at the recipient site. After treatment, approximately 7 mm of horizontal and 3 mm of vertical augmentation were gained. Histologic observation showed that the grafted bone was well integrated with the original bone. The volume of tissue gained was sufficient for placing an implant in an optimal position. The gain in the vertical and horizontal dimensions allowed an esthetic result with a single-tooth crown. There is presently much interest in tunable, flexible, or reconfigurable metamaterial structures that work in the terahertz frequency range. They can be useful for a range of applications, including spectroscopy, sensing, imaging, and communications. Various methods based on microelectromechanical systems have been used for fabricating terahertz metamaterials, but they typically require high-cost facilities and involve a number of time-consuming and intricate processes. Here, we demonstrate a simple, robust, and cost-effective method for fabricating flexible and stackable multiresonant terahertz metamaterials, using silver nanoparticle inkjet printing. Using this method, we designed and fabricated two arrays of split-ring resonators (SRRs) having different resonant frequencies on separate sheets of paper and then combined the two arrays by stacking. Through terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, we observed resonances at the frequencies expected for the individual SRR arrays as well as at a new frequency due to coupling between the two SRR arrays. The article presents the case study of a 68 year old woman with a history of Darier disease. She showed clinical and histological features of DD along with mild learning difficulties. The disease is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis as warty papules and plaques seborrhoeic areas, and neuropsychiatric abnormalities in some cases. DD is caused by mutations in the ATP2A2 gene, encoding the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum.

Objectives: To develop a remote-operating slit lamp microscope system (the remote slit lamp) as the core for highly specialized ophthalmology diagnoses, and to compare the utility of this system with the conventional slit lamp microscope system (the conventional slit lamp) in making a diagnosis.Methods: The remote slit lamp system was developed. Three factors were evaluated in comparison to the conventional slit lamp. The ability to acquire skills was investigated using a task loading system among specialists and residents in ophthalmology. Participants repeated a task up to ten times and the time required for each task was analyzed. The consistency of the two systems in making a diagnosis was investigated using eyes of patients with ocular diseases as well as healthy volunteers.Results: The remote slit lamp is composed of a patient's unit and ophthalmologist's unit connected by high-speed internet. The two units share images acquired by the slit lamp in addition to the images and voices of patients and ophthalmologists. Both ophthalmology specialists and residents could minimize the completion times after several trials. The remote slit lamp took more time than the conventional slit lamp. Both systems showed a high consistency in evaluations among eyes with healthy eyes or those with ocular diseases.Conclusions: The remote slit lamp has a similar diagnostic ability, but required more examination time in comparison to the conventional slit lamp. The currently developed remote slit lamp has the potential to be employed for tele-medicine purposes in the field of ophthalmology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The caveolin 1 to caveolin 2 (CAV1-CAV2) gene region on chromosome 7q31 has been reported to be associated with susceptibility to primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG) in previous studies. We investigated whether genetic variants in the CAV1-CAV2 region are associated with NTG in Japanese patients. Two hundred and ninety-two Japanese patients with NTG and 352 Japanese healthy controls were recruited. We genotyped three single-nucleotide polymorphisms; that is, rs1052990, rs4236601, and rs7795356, in the CAV1-CAV2 gene region and assessed the allelic diversity among cases and controls. The frequency of the minor allele (G) of rs1052990 was significantly decreased in NTG cases compared with controls (P=0.014, OR=0.71), whereas NTG or POAG cases had a significantly higher frequency of the allele than controls in previous studies. Conversely, rs7795356 did not show any significant association with NTG cases, and rs4236601 was monomorphic in the Japanese study population. Our findings did not correspond with previous positive results, suggesting that CAV1-CAV2 variants studied in the present study are not important risk factors for NTG susceptibility in all populations. AimsPrimary angle-closure glaucoma is expected to account for nearly 50% of bilateral glaucoma blindness by 2020. This study was conducted to assess the performance of the scanning peripheral anterior chamber depth analyzer (SPAC) and limbal anterior chamber depth (LACD) as screening methods for angle closure.MethodsThis study assessed two clinical populations to compare SPAC, LACD, and gonioscopy: the Zhongshan Angle-closure Prevention Trial, from which 370 patients were eligible as closed-angle participants and the Liwan Eye Study, from which 72 patients were selected as open-angle controls. Eligible participants were assessed by SPAC, LACD, and gonioscopy.ResultsAngle status was defined by gonioscopy. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) for SPAC was 0.92 (0.89-0.95) whereas AUROC for LACD was 0.94 (0.92-0.97). Using conventional cutoff points, sensitivity/specificity was 93.0%/70.8% for SPAC and 94.1%/87.5% for LACD. Sequential testing using both SPAC and LACD increased the specificity to 94.4% and decreased the sensitivity to 87.0%.ConclusionSPAC has significantly lower specificity than LACD measurement using conventional cutoffs but interpretation of the findings can be performed by modestly trained personnel. The objective of this study was to determine whether plasma levels of acrolein, a compound that causes cell damage, and amyloid-β (Aβ) are useful biochemical markers for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The study included 221 elderly subjects divided into 101 non-demented [33 healthy control and 68 non-demented subjects with white matter hyperintensity (nd-WMH)], 50 mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 70 AD. Increases in both protein-conjugated acrolein (PC-Acro) and Aβ40/42 ratio were observed in MCI and AD patients compared with values in control subjects. When the combined measurements of PC-Acro and Aβ40/42 ratio were evaluated using the median value of the relative risk value for dementia, they were in the order AD (0.98) ≥ MCI (0.97) > nd-WMH (0.83) > control (0.35). The results indicate that measurements of PC-Acro and Aβ40/42 ratio not only detect MCI and AD patients but also nd-WMH subjects. Furthermore, both PC-Acro and Aβ40/42 ratio in plasma for 120 MCI and AD patients were significantly higher than those for 101 control and nd-WMH subjects, indicating that both values become useful biochemical markers for MCI and AD subjects.
