Control of the COVID-19 pandemic requires significant changes in people's health behaviors. We offer this multidisciplinary perspective on the extent of compliance with social distancing recommendations and on coping with these measures around the globe in the first months of the pandemic. We present descriptive data from our survey of 17,650 respondents across 18 countries and territories in June 2020. The majority of respondents worried about contracting the virus. Nearly all engaged in at least some preventive behaviors, particularly handwashing, mask wearing, and avoiding social events. Most reported that it would be difficult to continue these behaviors for more than a few months, and about half reported feeling more anxious since the start of the pandemic. Commonly reported coping behaviors included news consumption, watching television, and sleeping. Our cross-national study highlights areas for developing and implementing health behavior interventions in the global fight to stop the spread of COVID-19.

BackgroundIn India, men who have sex with men (MSM) often face physical violence and harassment from police and the general society. Many MSM may not openly disclose their sexual identity, especially if they are married to women and have families. Due to pervasive stigma and discrimination, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention programs are unable to reach many MSM effectively. ObjectiveThe objective of this paper was to describe the design, operations, and monitoring of the Sahaay helpline, a mHealth intervention for the MSM population of India. MethodsWe established the “Sahaay” mHealth intervention in 2013; a MSM-dedicated helpline whose main goal was to increase access to comprehensive, community-based HIV prevention services and improve knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of MSM towards HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) in three states of India (Chhattisgarh, Delhi, and Maharashtra). The helpline provided a 24x7 confidential and easy to use interactive voice response system (IVRS) to callers. IVRS function was monitored through an online dashboard of indicators. The system also provided real-time reporting on callers and services provided. ResultsThe helpline received more than 100,000 calls from 39,800 callers during the first nine months of operation. The helpline maintained an operational uptime of 99.81% (6450/6462 hours); and answered more than 81.33% (83,050/102,115) of all calls. More than three-fourths of the calls came between 9:00 am-12:00 pm. The most successful promotional activity was “interpersonal communication” (reported by 70.05%, 27,880/39,800, of the callers). Nearly three-fourths of the callers self-identified as MSM, including 17.05% (6786/39,800) as rural MSM and 5.03% (2001/39,800) as a married MSM. Most callers (93.10%, 37,055/39,800) requested information, while some (27.01%, 10,750/39,800) requested counseling on HIV/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), STIs, and other health and nonhealth issues. There were 38.97% (15,509/39,800) of the callers that were provided contacts of different HIV/AIDS referral services. Many MSM clients reported increased self-esteem in dealing with their sexual identity and disclosing the same with their family and spouse; and an increase in HIV/AIDS risk-reduction behaviors like consistent condom use and HIV testing. ConclusionsNational HIV/AIDS prevention interventions for MSM in India should consider scaling-up this helpline service across the country. The helpline may serve as an important mechanism for accessing hard-to-reach MSM, and thus improving HIV prevention programing.

Objectives: Public health detailing is an intervention in which a public health professional visits health care providers to educate them about evidence-based approaches to improve health. The San Francisco Department of Public Health conducted a public health detailing program from 2016 to 2018 to improve sexual health care and preexposure prophylaxis services in the city. Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods study to understand the implementation of detailing and explore examples of changes to clinicians' clinical behaviors. We surveyed 203 clinicians, conducted 60-minute qualitative interviews with 7 clinicians and 4 detailers, and analyzed tracking forms. We used descriptive statistics to assess associations in the surveys. We used qualitative thematic analysis to understand facilitators and barriers to detailing and identify ways to improve the process and identify its potential benefits. Results: In interviews, both clinicians and detailers had a favorable view of detailing as a tool to connect health department expertise to clinicians. Detailers cited challenges such as limited clinic time, provider turnover, and policies that limit their access to clinicians. These challenges may attenuate the real-world benefits of detailing. Clinicians offered examples of how detailing altered their behaviors, such as taking sexual health histories, building knowledge and confidence about sexual health, and using health department services. Matched surveys (n = 21) showed preliminary changes to prescribing preexposure prophylaxis. Conclusions: Public health detailing is a promising approach to increase clinicians' knowledge and confidence to offer sexual health care services, build buy-in, and support connection to health departments. Detailing programs require sufficient investment and staff support to build lasting and collaborative relationships between clinicians and public health departments and to assess the impact of the intervention. There is limited information about how the mental health of people has changed over time during the COVID-19 pandemic in low- and middle-income countries. In a cross-sectional study, we identified factors associated with psychological distress at two periods immediately after two peaks of the COVID-19 pandemic in Russia. Data were collected via online surveys. In May–June 2020, we surveyed 373 respondents across Russia. In January-February 2021, we surveyed 743 people, using the same approach for survey distribution. With Kessler-10 as a measure of psychological distress, we used regression analysis to determine factors associated with higher psychological distress among Russians. Levels of psychological distress were high in both time periods and did not significantly change between the surveys. Having had COVID-19, losing one's job, experiencing problems accessing healthcare, and changing drinking behaviour during the pandemic were associated with higher psychological distress. Apart from getting sick or worrying about the virus, psychological distress is affected by restrictions and the consequences of the pandemic situation. The HIV epidemic continues to grow in Kazakhstan and HIV stigma remains a major barrier to HIV prevention and treatment in the country. HIV stigma in healthcare setting may also discourage people living with HIV (PLHIV) from getting the care needed. Therefore, studying the attitudes of healthcare workers towards PLHIV is important and requires well-constructed measurement tools adapted to the specific cultural context. In our study, we aimed to adapt and re-validate a brief questionnaire on HIV stigma among healthcare workers in Almaty, Kazakhstan. We held focus group discussions to obtain input on an existing questionnaire and surveyed 448 primary healthcare providers to psychometrically evaluate the scale. The final HIV-stigma scale consisted of 15 items, 6 of them measuring negative opinions about PLHIV and the rest assessing stigmatizing health facility policies towards PLHIV. Both HIV-stigma subscales demons6trated adequate psychometric properties (with Cronbach's alpha α = 0.57 for the first and α = 0.86 for the second subscale, and with factor loadings >0.35 within each subscale). High numbers of respondents holding negative attitudes towards PLHIV, detected in this sample (87%; n = 380), may suggest the need for immediate actions addressing HIV stigma in healthcare in Kazakhstan. Vaccines against SARS‐CoV‐2 continue to be developed at an astonishingly quick speed and the early ones, like Pfizer and Moderna, have been shown to be more effective than many public health scientists had dared to hope. As COVID‐19 vaccine research continues to progress, the world's eyes are turning toward medicine regulators. COVID‐19 vaccines need to be authorized for use in each country in which the pharmaceutical industry intends to commercialize its product. This results in a patchwork of regulations that can influence the speed at which products are launched and the standards that govern them. In this research forum article, we discuss several key questions about COVID‐19 vaccine regulations that should shape research on the next stage of the pandemic response. We call for a research agenda that looks into the political economy of pharmaceutical regulation, particularly from a comparative perspective, including Global South countries. This study analyzed gender differences in exposure to family violence in Serbia and its association with health symptoms. Using data from the National Health Survey 2006 in Serbia, univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were run to examine the association between exposure to physical violence in the family (in the past 12 months) and the occurrence of 15 different health symptoms (in the past 4 weeks). Out of 12,646 interviewed adults (older than 20), women reported experiencing family violence nearly 1.7 times more often than men (1.28 % vs. 0.75 %). Women had nine health symptoms significantly associated with experienced violence, while men had four, even after controlling for socio-demographic characteristics. Depression and insomnia were common for both genders. Results suggest that physicians should pay attention to health complaints, consider family violence as an associated factor, and address violence in a gender sensitive way that is free of prejudice and preconceptions. Few studies explore how intimate partner violence (IPV) affects Arab Americans. Through focus groups with stakeholders from an Arab-centered health organization and semistructured interviews with Arab-American female clients (18–65 years), we explore how IPV affects Arab-American women and factors that impede and facilitate their access to support services. We find that IPV is a critical concern among Arab Americans and that generational status, educational attainment, and support from family, friends, or religious leaders were perceived to influence access to IPV support services. The HIV burden is high among female sex workers (FSW) in Ethiopia, yet HIV testing coverage is suboptimal. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 137 FSW in Addis Ababa. We examined factors related to recent HIV testing and self-reported HIV serostatus using logistic regression. HIV prevalence was 10%; and among HIV-negative participants, 63% reported recent HIV testing. Involvement in sex work for ≥5 years (aOR 3.25; 95% CI 1.22, 8.69; p-value 0.02) and hormonal contraceptive use (aOR 3.37; 95% CI 1.09, 10.41; p-value 0.03) were significantly associated with recent HIV testing. Involvement in sex work for ≥5 years (aOR 13.13, 95% CI 1.31 132.01, p-value 0.03), drug use (aOR 8.02; 95% CI 1.36, 47.31; p-value 0.02), and having a job other than sex work (aOR 122.05, 95% CI 2.97 > 999.99, p-value 0.01) were significantly associated with self-reported HIV-positive serostatus. Russia provides an important case study in its COVID-19 response by a country that has one of the largest epidemics, increasingly authoritarian government policies, and important domestic and international political influence. In this article, we describe and explain Russia's public health and social policy responses to COVID-19 – earlier in the pandemic when the concern was the border with China, to later when there were confirmed cases in all regions in the country. In the past, Russia has served as an interesting case for exploring global health politics and infectious diseases. Thus, we position our analysis of the COVID-19 response through a reflection on infectious disease control in the Soviet Union and contemporary Russia. We explore the following: government control, contention with official statistics, (dis-)information, (mis-)trust, and vulnerabilities of medical care workers. We also discuss how Russia is reinforcing its role in global health during the pandemic, for example through vaccine development and foreign humanitarian aid. It is easy but mistaken to think that public health emergency measures and social policy can be separated. This paper compares the experiences of Brazil, Germany, India and the United States during their 2020 responses to the COVID-19 pandemic to show that social policies such as unemployment insurance, flat payments and short-time work are crucial to the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions as well as to their political sustainability. Broadly, public health measures that constrain economic activity will only be effective and sustainable if paired with social policy measures that enable people to comply without sacrificing their livelihoods and economic wellbeing. Tough public health policies and generous social policies taken together proved a success in Germany. Generous social policies uncoupled from strong public health interventions, in Brazil and the US during the summer of 2020, enabled lockdown compliance but failed to halt the pandemic, while tough public health measures without social policy support rapidly collapsed in India. In the COVID-19 and future pandemics, public health theory and practice should recognise the importance of social policy to the immediate effectiveness of public health policy as well as to the long-term social and economic impact of pandemics. Like other countries in the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Kazakhstan has seen an increase in the number of new HIV cases in recent years. HIV treatment coverage among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Kazakhstan is suboptimal; however, the country has committed to reaching the 90-90-90 goals for HIV diagnosis and treatment. Kazakhstan has recently committed to the "test and treat" approach, and provides antiretroviral treatment (ART) to all PLHIV. Using registry data from the City AIDS Center, we used logistic regression models to assess the factors associated with uptake of ART and its correlates among 2687 adult PLHIV in Almaty, Kazakhstan. 67.8% were on treatment. PLHIV are more likely to be on ART if diagnosed in the later clinical stages [aOR = 2.45, 95% CI (1.85, 3.25)], diagnosed after the country's change in treatment approach [aOR = 1.97, 95% CI (1.42, 2.72)], and acquired HIV via sexual transmission vs. injection drug use [aOR = 1.72, 95%CI (1.25, 2.35)]. Our findings highlight which subpopulations are most in need of interventions to promote ART in Kazakhstan, and also serve as an example for other countries in Central Asia for thinking about what factors are important to consider in improving HIV treatment coverage. Reproductive autonomy is essential for women to achieve reproductive rights and freedom. However, the factors associated with reproductive autonomy in various contexts have not been explored. The aim of this analysis was to understand the socio-demographic, reproductive history and social context variables associated with two validated reproductive autonomy sub-scales among 516 young Ghanaian women age 15 to 24. We used multiple linear regression modelling to test associations between covariates of interest and the communication sub-scale and decision-making sub-scale. Covariates included age, educational attainment, ethnic group, employment, religion, religious attendance, relationship type, previous pregnancy, previous abortion, social support for adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and social stigma towards adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Results from final models demonstrated that factors associated with the communication scale included education (p = 0.008), ethnic group (p = 0.039), and social support for adolescent sexual and reproductive health (B = 0.12, p = 0.003). Factors associated with the decision-making scale included ethnic group (p = 0.002), religion (p = 0.003), religious attendance (p = 0.043), and previous pregnancy (p = 0.008). Communication reproductive autonomy and decision-making reproductive autonomy were associated with different factors, providing insight into potential intervention approaches and points. Social support for adolescent sexual and reproductive health was associated with increases in young women's abilities to communicate with their partners about sexual and reproductive health issues including sex, contraceptive use and fertility. Background There are over 1 million people living with HIV in Russia, and less than half of them are on antiretroviral treatment (ART). Earlier in the epidemic, Russia was successful in implementing prevention of mother-to-child transmission programmes; however, there is a gap in knowledge about postpartum adherence to ART among women living with HIV (WLHIV). The objective of our research study was to identify which factors are associated with postpartum engagement in HIV care and treatment in Russia. Methods We conducted a community-based participatory research study in five Russian cities. We surveyed 200 WLHIV who had given birth within the previous 24 months about their use of ART. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine which types of social support are associated with adherence to ART in the postpartum period. Results Less than half (40%) of mothers reported being adherent to ART. Multivariable analysis showed that having a supportive family environment [aOR = 2.64, 95% CI (1.91–5.83)], and active engagement with other HIV-positive mothers [aOR = 2.20, 95% CI (1.04–4.66)] were positively associated with postpartum adherence to ART. WLHIV who had more than one child were less likely to be adherent then WLHIV with just one child [aOR = 0.44, 95% CI (0.22–0.91)]. Conclusion The support that new mothers have or do not have can play an important role in WLHIV adherence to ART. Purpose: Currently, a high number of mother–infant cohorts do not complete the full cascade of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services in Ethiopia. This study examined the level of HIV-exposed infants discharged negative and rate of loss to follow-up (LTFU) in a mother–infant cohort in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in selected public health facilities of Addis Ababa. Data were abstracted from infant and mother registration cards and mother–infant cohort follow-up charts. The proportion of HIV-exposed infants discharged negative was examined. LTFU was then analyzed and a Kaplan–Meier survival curve was used to estimate Cumulative probability of LTFU among the different groups. Cox proportional hazard model was used to determine significant factors associated with LTFU. Results: Three hundred fifty six mother–infant pairs were included in this study. The LTFU rate at the end of follow-up period was of 13.2% (95% CI= 9.83– 17.6%) and an overall HIV transmission rate of 0.61% was observed. Younger women (AHR=0.90, 95% CI = 0.83– 0.97) and those who were newly diagnosed at the time of entry to PMTCT (AHR=0.35, 95% CI = 0.18– 0.68) were less likely to complete PMTCT. Conclusion: High retention to PMTCT services and low mother-to-child HIV transmission rate was observed. To successfully achieve the PMTCT program outcomes, more emphasis should be given to younger women and to those newly enrolled in the PMTCT program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 has created a ramifying public health, economic, and political crisis throughout many countries in the world. While globally the pandemic is at different stages and far from under control in some countries, now is the time for public health researchers and political scientists to start understanding how and why governments responded the way they have, explore how effective these responses appear to be, and what lessons we can draw about effective public health policymaking in preparation of the next wave of COVID-19 or the next infectious disease pandemic. We argue that there will be no way to understand the different responses to COVID-19 and their effects without understanding policy and politics. We propose four key focuses to understand the reasons for COVID-19 responses: social policies to crisis management as well as recovery, regime type (democracy or autocracy), formal political institutions (federalism, presidentialism), and state capacity (control over health care systems and public administration). A research agenda to address the COVID-19 pandemic that takes politics as a serious focus can enable the development of more realistic, sustainable interventions in policies and shape our broader understanding of the politics of public health. Concealment of diagnosis is one of the most important manifestations of HIV-related stigma, which is a major barrier to addressing the growing HIV epidemic in Russia. The purpose of our research was to understand how and why people living with HIV (PLHIV) conceal their HIV status in medical settings. We analyzed data collected through two major Russian online forums for PLHIV. We found that concealing HIV status in medical settings is connected to worries about breach of confidentiality, denial of quality medical care, and judgment from health care providers. PLHIV discuss the dilemmas between risks of disclosing and potential legal or health-related consequences of concealment. We identified strategies that PLHIV use to conceal their status including falsifying medical records, hiding test results, and offering payments to doctors. Understanding status concealment is important for building more effective interactions between health care providers and PLHIV, at both the individual and the institutional levels. Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) community practice efforts vary globally. In North Macedonia, we conducted a needs assessment with 71 SGM community members and 11 non-governmental organization (NGO) staff. We used narrative and thematic analysis to assess how participants described SGM social movements, community building, and community practice in the country. Findings showed that community engagement, capacity, and organizing could be strengthened. SGM and NGO narratives varied about ways to include the community in activism and social action and their relationship to one another. Russia is host to one of the largest populations of labour migrants, who primarily come from Central Asia. There remains a dearth of information about the health of this population, in particular Central Asian women. We conducted a qualitative, exploratory study on the health concerns and healthcare utilisation among Central Asian female labour migrants in Russia. We conducted in-depth interviews with service providers and female labour migrants between June and November, 2017. We used thematic analysis to identify the following themes: there is a range of health concerns, including sexual and reproductive health issues; economic vulnerability and racial/ethnic discrimination influence health and utilisation of services, and constrain making health a priority; access to information is lacking; issues of trust, language and cultural norms influence healthcare service utilisation; and, social support is important to consider. Our findings reflect how religion, gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic position intersect to influence health and utilisation of services. These findings have implications for public health programming and interventions among this largely neglected population, as well as make an important contribution to the existing global health literature on women, migration, and health. Decision-making regarding the outcome of a pregnancy may include participation of the woman herself, her sexual partner, parents, family, and/or community. This paper examines who had the most say in the outcome of young Ghanaian women's last pregnancy and whether this correlated with her level of reproductive autonomy (RA). We analysed cross-sectional data from 380 previously pregnant young women in urban Ghana. We measured communication and decision-making RA using modified scales ranging from 3 (low RA) to 12 (high RA). We tested unadjusted associations between the RA sub-scales and who made the pregnancy decision (self, partner, both together, or someone else) and used multinomial regression models to understand these associations when controlling for sociodemographic, reproductive history, and social context variables. In final models, a one-point increase in decision-making RA was associated with an adjusted relative risk ratio of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.66–0.93; p = 0.006) of partner having the most say as compared to the woman having the most say. The communication RA scale was not associated. Programmes that increase RA may be effective in increasing women's rights to execute decisions about reproductive health and outcomes. China has 747,000 confirmed HIV/AIDS cases and sexual transmission between men who have sex with men (MSM) is the most prevalent mode of transmission. Our study aims to (a) examine HIV prevalence and behavioral risk factors for HIV infection among 1900 MSM recruited from a community-based organization in Tianjin, China, and (b) describe HIV treatment outcomes for those diagnosed with HIV. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify which socio-demographics and behaviors were associated with HIV infection. The overall HIV prevalence was 3.95%. Key behavioral risk factors included: receptive sex role, older age at first sex with man, condomless anal sex, and having used 2+ drugs. Of those living with HIV, 83% were successfully enrolled in antiretroviral therapy and those enrolled were all virally suppressed after one year. These findings highlight key behavioral risk factors for HIV infection in Tianjin, China and can inform interventions to preventing further HIV transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There exists limited understanding about the intersectional nature of needs and inequities among sexual and gender minorities in Macedonia and Eastern Europe. We conducted a qualitative, cross-sectional and national needs assessment among 71 sexual and gender minority community members using semi-structured focus groups and interviews. Thematic analysis was used to better understand their self-identified needs, their concerns about equity and the intersectional nature of their needs. Community members discussed a wide range of health and healthcare needs as well as the social and structural factors that influence those needs, including: cultural norms; victimisation and safety concerns and the role of law, policy and politics; education and democratisation of knowledge; and economic and housing opportunities. Needs were patterned across different sexual and gender minority subgroups such that those experiencing heightened marginalisation (e.g. trans* persons) also experienced compounded forms of inequity. Given that sexual and gender minorities in Macedonia have numerous structurally induced intersectional needs, multilevel and multifaceted strategies are needed to ensure that their rights and needs are respected, protected and fulfilled at structural, community and individual levels. In Russia, the HIV epidemic continues to grow at an alarming rate, and treatment coverage is low. While prevention of mother-to-child transmission is markedly effective in the country; little is known about the mothers' longer-term engagement in HIV care and treatment. Through a community-based, qualitative research study, we aimed to identify and explore the needs of HIV-positive mothers in two diverse locations in Russia. Using thematic analysis, we identified the following four categories of unmet needs: comprehensive and coordinated care, psychological support, material needs, and improved access to services. While sexual and gender minorities (SGM)-based discrimination and poor mental health is well established in the literature within Western contexts, there is a significant gap in our understanding in other regions, specifically Southeastern Europe. Additionally, limited information exists on self-concealment's role in these pathways. We explored the relationship between self-concealment, discrimination and mental health in Macedonia, a country rife with sociopolitical oppression towards the population. We utilised regression and structural equation models to identify the effects of self-concealment on the relationship between discrimination and rumination and social interaction anxiety from a cross-sectional survey of 18–30 year olds (n = 396). Self-concealment was a significant mediator between discrimination and psychosocial outcomes; accounting for 29% of the effect from discrimination to social anxiety, and 57% of the effect from discrimination to rumination (p <.001). Results reveal that by actively managing their identity, SGM in Macedonia experience elevated distress beyond the impact of discrimination. The results discern salient information on how to disrupt the adverse role of discrimination of SGM on mental health outcomes. This provides a crucial template for the global public health community when developing mental health programmes and advocating for policies, to begin reversing the mental health inequities created within the country. There is a dearth of information about the factors influencing postpartum engagement in HIV treatment and care in Russia, a country with an expanding HIV epidemic and poor treatment coverage. The goal of our community-based study was to identify and explore the factors influencing engagement in care after pregnancy. We conducted in-depth interviews with 50 women living with HIV who had recently given birth, and with 20 health care and social service providers in two locations: a large metropolitan city (St. Petersburg) and a semi-urban town near the Ural Mountains. Thematic analysis led us to identify the following themes in regard to factors influencing postpartum engagement in care: feeling overwhelmed with caring for an infant; sense of responsibility for child's health and well-being; misinformation and AIDS denialism; HIV-related stigma and fear; benefits versus side-effects of ART; professional and personal support; drug and alcohol use; and structural factors. Structural factors include poverty, continued provision of ART after pregnancy, dosage, obtaining necessary documents, and distance to clinic. These findings are important to consider in developing much-needed interventions to promote women's longer-term engagement in HIV care and treatment in Russia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Faith-based organisations (FBOs) have long been part of the fight against HIV and AIDS. International bodies continue to collaborate with FBOs to implement HIV-prevention programmes with mixed success. Zambia has been a target of such programmes in part due to its high HIV prevalence. The Trusted Messenger approach to provide religious leader networks with biomedical, science-focused education about HIV and AIDS was piloted in 2006, but participant experiences of the intervention have not been explored qualitatively. In 2016, in-depth interviews were conducted of 34 randomly chosen individuals who attended Trusted Messenger workshops between 2006 and 2016 in Livingstone, Lusaka, and the Copperbelt region. Findings indicate that the religious leader attendees gained scientific insights about HIV which motivated their action in personal, social, and religious contexts. Participants found the science comprehensible and empowering and identified workshop frequency and language as challenging. Utilising science-focused education within contextual settings of religious leader networks can combat the spread of HIV and the mistreatment of people living with HIV and AIDS. Objective: HIV testing among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Russia has been documented to be low; however, few studies have been conducted outside of the major metropolitan cities. The aim of this study was to determine how many PWID were aware of their HIV serostatus and what motivators were associated with getting tested for HIV.Methods: Our analysis describes HIV testing behaviours among 593 PWID in Ivanovo and Novosibirsk, Russia. Participants completed a questionnaire and consented to HIV testing. We used logistic regression modelling to determine demographic and behavioural correlates of HIV testing.Results: Self-reported history of HIV testing was 52% in Ivanovo and 54% in Novosibirsk. Prior knowledge of serostatus was very low among PWID who tested positive (3 of 102 in Ivanovo and 0 of 11 in Novosibirsk). The most common reason for testing was doctor referral, and the most common locations were government HIV/AIDS centres and prisons. HIV testing was rarely client initiated or led by a personal motivation for being tested.Conclusions: HIV testing in Ivanovo and Novosibirsk is suboptimal, resulting in poor knowledge of HIV serostatus. Objectives: The objective of this research was to determine modern contraceptive use (MCU) and explore factors associated with MCU in the Western Balkans.Methods: Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) data from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, including the datasets from Roma settlements, were merged. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess which factors were associated with MCU among married women aged 15-49 in the region.Results: Among the 11,381 women surveyed, 13.75% reported MCU and 23.74% justified domestic violence. While bivariate analysis indicated that women who expressed justification of domestic violence were less likely to report MUC, this was not the case after adjusting for sociodemographic factors. Multivariate analysis showed that Roma were less likely than non-Roma to engage in MCU. Additionally, increased education, increased wealth, and urban residency were significantly associated with increased likelihood of MCU.Conclusion: The results highlight the need for more attention from research, programming and policy communities in order to better understand and address the overall problematically low level of MCU and factors associated with low MCU. More efforts are needed to address the disparities in MCU among Roma women and women of lower socioeconomic status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
