Free-ocean CO2 enrichment (FOCE) systems are designed to assess the impact of ocean acidification on biological communities in situ for extended periods of time (weeks to months). They overcome some of the drawbacks of laboratory experiments and field observations by enabling (1) precise control of CO2 enrichment by monitoring pH as an offset of ambient pH, (2) consideration of indirect effects such as those mediated through interspecific relationships and food webs, and (3) relatively long experiments with intact communities. Bringing perturbation experiments from the laboratory to the field is, however, extremely challenging. The main goal of this paper is to provide guidelines on the general design, engineering, and sensor options required to conduct FOCE experiments. Another goal is to introduce xFOCE, a community-led initiative to promote awareness, provide resources for in situ perturbation experiments, and build a user community. Present and existing FOCE systems are briefly described and examples of data collected presented. Future developments are also addressed as it is anticipated that the next generation of FOCE systems will include, in addition to pH, options for oxygen and/or temperature control. Oceanographic science is frequently hindered by a lack of spatial and temporal resolution for most parameters oceanographic science desires to measure. This paper discusses our effort to advance the current state of bathymetric mapping as part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) charter. MBARI scientists and engineers, in consultation with the external community, have produced a new multibeam mapping autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) system. The system is intended to reduce some of the impediments encountered by science trying to resolve specific portions of the oceans bottom. Starting with the established and in-house developed Dorado AUV technology, MBARI engineering refined the AUV into a full ocean depth capable and now operational multibeam mapping system (MBAUV). The MBAUV system conducts regular multibeam bathymetry, subbottom, and sidescan surveys for oceanographic science. MBAUV is a torpedo-shaped, 6000 m rated vehicle operating the aforementioned sonars simultaneously. The endurance of the MBAUV is approximately 8 h at 3 kn and is designed to support 16 h operations at 3 kn by adding an additional battery section. This paper describes the basics of the MBAUV and our design trades and modifications to the Dorado AUV in support of multibeam mapping missions. The paper also reviews a sampling of the results from a series of missions that demonstrate the performance of various subsystems and the science quality data available from the MBAUV. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This special issue focuses on the rapidly evolving technologies on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). AUVs are now widely used in the world as a useful tool to explore underwater environments. We would like to share an overview of the latest state of the AUV technologies and applications, and evoke discussions on current challenges and future developments. The special issue features invited prominent papers from the Joint Symposium/Workshop 2016 IEEE OES Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV 2016), which was held in November 2016 at the University of Tokyo, Japan. It is a biannual workshop organized by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES). This event has now become a well-established and prestigious international gathering of some of the best in the field. This time, the workshop was held in Asia for the first time. In total, 73 papers were presented, attracting 133 participants from 20 countries. The workshop covers all topics relevant to AUVs, from component technologies to operation, in single-track sessions providing opportunities for the researchers and engineers to discuss the relevant technologies in detail. Today, as AUVs become commercially available and operated around the world, we believe the workshop should address not only the technology to develop a new AUV, but also cover more extensive interests related to AUVs - from the know how obtained through operation to the data collected by AUVs. Objective: This study examined the role of central sensitization in the experience of pain among adolescents and young adults with the most severe genotypes of sickle cell disease (SCD). We hypothesized that adolescents and young adults with chronic SCD pain would demonstrate a higher perceptual response to repeated stimulation of identical intensity (i.e., temporal summation of pain, TSP) compared to counterparts with infrequent pain. We also examined psychological risk factors that can impact pain sensitivity., Methods: Patients ages 12-21 years, diagnosed with SCD type Hb SS or Hb S Beta0Thalasemia, who reported infrequent pain (≤2 pain days/month; n = 25) or met AAPT criteria for chronic SCD pain (n = 25) were enrolled. Patients were age- and sex-matched, with similar proportions receiving chronic blood transfusion and hydroxyurea. Patients completed static quantitative sensory testing (QST) and dynamic TSP testing to assess pain sensitivity. Patients and a caregiver completed demographic and psychological measures (depression, anxiety, pain interference, pain catastrophizing)., Results: Simple slope analysis revealed differentially elevated heat TSP among adolescents and young adults with chronic SCD pain (b = 3.14, p = .002) but not those with infrequent pain (b = 0.45, p = .61). Faster habituation was further observed for those with chronic compared to infrequent pain. Adolescents and young adults with chronic pain reported more frequent depression, anxiety, and pain interference symptoms; however, psychological symptoms and pain catastrophizing were not associated with QST or TSP (ps >.17)., Conclusion: Current results demonstrate that a well-established, prognostic, QST risk marker (i.e., TSP) may distinguish chronic from infrequent pain subgroups of adolescents and young adults with SCD., (© The Author(s) 2024. Context: Pediatric palliative care (PPC) can improve quality of life of children with life-threatening conditions and their families. However, PPC resources vary by state and within a state, and PPC resources and personnel are often inequitably distributed toward urban areas with major hospital systems. A community needs assessment (CNA) that evaluates the current status of PPC and pediatric hospice care can help identify gaps and opportunities to improve PPC access., Objectives: A CNA was performed in the state of Georgia to explore the scope and gaps of PPC and hospice services and plan for what is needed to grow PPC and hospice services., Methods: The CNA used a mixed-methods approach, including a community profile, literature search, windshield survey, key informant interviews, and a quantitative online survey. The methodology is outlined in a companion article, entitled "A methodological approach to conducting a statewide community needs assessment of pediatric palliative care and hospice resources.", Results: Four key themes were identified from synthesis of primary and secondary data collection: defining and providing PPC, the environment for PPC in Georgia, coordination and collaboration, and the future of PPC in Georgia. Recommendations to improve PPC services in Georgia were categorized by feasibility and importance. High feasibility and high importance recommendations included expanding PPC education for both providers and patients and creating a formal network or coalition of PPC providers and allies who can work collaboratively at multiple care levels across Georgia in expanding PPC services., Conclusion: In Georgia, this assessment provides the foundation for next steps in coordinated efforts between hospital-based clinicians, state hospice and palliative care organizations, and state policy makers to ultimately expand PPC care available to children and families., (Copyright © 2020 American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Free-ocean CO 2 enrichment (FOCE) experiments have been deployed in marine ecosystems to manipulate carbonate system conditions to those predicted in future oceans. We investigated whether the pH/carbonate chemistry of extremely cold polar waters can be manipulated in an ecologically relevant way, to represent conditions under future atmospheric CO 2 levels, in an in-situ FOCE experiment in Antarctica. We examined spatial and temporal variation in local ambient carbonate chemistry at hourly intervals at two sites between December and February and compared these with experimental conditions. We successfully maintained a mean pH offset in acidified benthic chambers of -0.38 (±0.07) from ambient for approximately 8 weeks. Local diel and seasonal fluctuations in ambient pH were duplicated in the FOCE system. Large temporal variability in acidified chambers resulted from system stoppages. The mean pH, Ω arag and fCO 2 values in the acidified chambers were 7.688 ± 0.079, 0.62 ± 0.13 and 912 ± 150 µatm, respectively. Variation in ambient pH appeared to be mainly driven by salinity and biological production and ranged from 8.019 to 8.192 with significant spatio-temporal variation. This experiment demonstrates the utility of FOCE systems to create conditions expected in future oceans that represent ecologically relevant variation, even under polar conditions.
