The interaction of high-power laser pulses with undercritical foams produced by different techniques but with the same average density is studied at the PALS laser facility. The spatial–temporal evolution of X-ray emission is observed using an X-ray streak camera, electron and ion temperatures are measured by X-ray spectroscopy, and hot-electron production is characterized by monochromatic X-ray imaging. Transmission of a femtosecond laser probe pulse through foams is observed in the near and far fields. In spite of large differences in pore size and foam structure, the velocity of ionization front propagation is quite similar for all the foams studied and is slower than that in a homogeneous material of the same average density. The ion temperature in the plasma behind the ionization front is a few times higher than the electron temperature. Hot-electron production in plastic foams with small pores is strongly suppressed compared with that in solid targets, whereas in foams produced by additive manufacturing, it is significantly increased to the level observed in bare copper foil targets. In this Letter, we report the possibility of generating intense, highly energetic proton beams using terawatt, sub-nanosecond class laser system by irradiating modified cavity pressure acceleration-type targets. In this approach, the main source of few-mega electron volt protons is thermonuclear deuterium–deuterium reaction; therefore, the energy spectrum of accelerated particles and their number is not as strongly related to the laser intensity (laser pulse energy and pulse duration in particular) as in the case of the most common ion acceleration mechanism, namely, target normal sheath acceleration. Performed Monte Carlo simulations suggest that using mentioned mechanism to generate proton beam might be beneficial and efficient driver for laser induced proton–boron fusion when moderate-to-low laser pulse intensities ( ⩽ 10 16 W / cm 2 ) and thin, lower than 100 μ m boron foils are used as catchers. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In a context of instability caused by various crises, including military crises, the higher education system is at great risk. Practice-oriented (dual) education is one of the most effective ways to address this problem. The innovation of this study is that for the first time a theoretical and practical model for involving all stakeholders in this process has been created and tested. The aim of the article is to substantiate a socially responsible dual education system in an unstable environment. METHODS: In terms of objective, this is an applied and quantitative study. The study population is estimated at 13 universities, 10 companies, 50 students between November 2021 and November 2022. The sample size is estimated using the Cochrane formula. A standard 5-point Likert scale questionnaire was used to collect data, where groups of questions corresponded to 4 hypotheses. All data were investigated by factor and cluster analysis using STATISTICA software (version 10.0). FINDINGS: All four hypotheses were confirmed. Before the war, the first and second hypotheses were prioritized. According to them, the process approach of social responsibility of dual education allows designing and launching a system of social responsibility of dual education and creating a talent pool at the employing enterprise. After the outbreak of hostilities, the priorities changed. The third and fourth hypotheses allow, through the organization of supportive (enabling) processes, to ensure the effective functioning of the system. As a result, the majority of stakeholders (31%) consider it necessary to modernize the mentoring system and provide graduates with relevant professional skills, while methodological and career guidance came in second and third (16% and 13% respectively). CONCLUSION: Using the theoretical and practical model of formation and implementation of dual education in the unstable conditions of Ukraine will help to solve the problems of the country out of crisis, post-war recovery of higher education system, to bring the requirements of production with the possibilities of training specialists in universities and can be applied in other countries in a similar situation. A multipurpose imaging x-ray crystal spectrometer is developed for the high energy density instrument of the European X-ray Free Electron Laser. The spectrometer is designed to measure x rays in the energy range of 4–10 keV, providing high-resolution, spatially resolved spectral measurements. A toroidally bent germanium (Ge) crystal is used, allowing x-ray diffraction from the crystal to image along a one-dimensional spatial profile while spectrally resolving along the other. A detailed geometrical analysis is performed to determine the curvature of the crystal. The theoretical performance of the spectrometer in various configurations is calculated by ray-tracing simulations. The key properties of the spectrometer, including the spectral and spatial resolution, are demonstrated experimentally on different platforms. Experimental results prove that this Ge spectrometer is a powerful tool for spatially resolved measurements of x-ray emission, scattering, or absorption spectra in high energy density physics. The influence of a transverse magnetic field on the formation and evolution of supersonic plasma jets and shocks was studied experimentally, and compared with 3D numerical simulations. An improved jet collimation was seen due to the change in the magnetic field topology restricting the radial expansion of the ablated plasma. The magnetic field was also shown to strongly affect the shock structures, both indirectly through the modified jet geometry, as well as due to a compression of the field lines in the shock region. The interaction characteristics were found to depend on the relative contribution of the magnetic and plasma pressure in balancing the ram pressure of the jet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Expanding laser plasmas, produced by high energy laser radiation, possess both high thermal and magnetic field energy densities. Characterization of such plasma is challenging but may provide essential information needed for understanding its physical behavior. Among the standard experimental techniques used for plasma diagnostics, conventional interferometry is one of the most convenient, informative, and accurate. Attempts to extract more information from each laser shot on large facilities have led to development of complex interferometry, which allows us to reconstruct both plasma electron density and magnetic field distributions from a single data object. However, such a benefit requires more accurate processing, critically important in some situations. This work focuses on quasi-axisymmetric interaction geometry. Starting from basic principles, we present a general analysis, consider main error sources, and obtain plasma density and magnetic field distributions with their derived error bars. A regularization procedure, significantly decreasing an error near the plasma symmetry axis, is proposed and analyzed in detail. With use of synthetic datasets, the presented analysis is generally universal for quasi-axisymmetric plasmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multidimensional modeling of phenomena and processes occurring during the expansion of the laser-produced plasma for different irradiation conditions related to both the laser beam parameters and the target constructions is a very complex issue, especially when modeling requires consideration of kinetic processes associated with the development of various types of microscopic instability. Multidimensional PIC codes create such a possibility, but their use is limited to modeling phenomena even in a very narrow timescale due to the limited computational capabilities of current supercomputers. For this reason, the paper attempts to interpret the results of the spontaneous magnetic field (SMF) measurements obtained during the PALS (Prague Asterix Laser System) experiment [Pisarczyk et al., AIP Adv. 10, 115201 (2020); Pisarczyk et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 102706 (2015)] based on the 2D magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) model [Jach et al., Computer Modeling of Dynamic Interaction of Bodies by Free Point Method (PWN, Warsaw, 2011)]. The MHD equations were used with included arbitrary (i) current of hot electrons treating it as an additional external current and (ii) ion-sound instability responsible for the increase in anomalous resistance in areas with high temperature and low-density plasma. The spatial distribution of magnetic fields and current density obtained from 2D modeling are in acceptable agreement with the experimental results [Pisarczyk et al., Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 62, 115020 (2020); Zaraś-Szydłowska et al., AIP Adv. 10, 115201 (2020); Pisarczyk et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 102706 (2015)]. The inclusion of temporal changes in anomalous resistance in modeling allowed us to explain the persistence of high SMF amplitude at the level of several megagauss after the laser pulse ended due to the effect of magnetic field freezing. Measurements had been performed of strong electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) generated as a result of laser–target interaction at the sub-ns kJ-class Prague Asterix Laser System facility. Two conductive Prodyn FD5C D-dot pencil probes were used. Measurements were performed inside the experimental chamber and outside the chamber in a large chamber window 40 cm in diameter in a setup that guaranteed 6 GHz bandwidth. A very good signal-to-noise ratio (17:1) was obtained after some steps were taken to ensure proper EMP shielding of the data collection setup. The EMP signal in the time domain was found to have the form of a sharp initial spike followed by gradually decaying oscillations interspersed with some secondary spikes. The values of the vertical component of the electric field strength were estimated. The highest value recorded in this experiment was kV m−1 at a distance of 40 cm from the target. It was observed that plastic targets—particularly the 100s of µm thick plastic foils—tend to generate stronger EMP fields than Cu and Au targets. A time-frequency analysis was performed for a typical shot, clearly showing some spectral features that appear only sometime after the start of the signal and hence indicate EMP generation from secondary sources. Electrons ejected from the target were recorded with the energies exceeding 1.5 MeV, which indicates that highly energetic processes are triggered as a result of the laser–target interaction. The interaction of supersonic laser-generated plasma jets with a secondary gas target was studied experimentally. The plasma parameters of the jet, and the resulting shock, were characterized using a combination of multi-frame interferometry/shadowgraphy, and x-ray diagnostics, allowing for a detailed study of their structure and evolution. The velocity was obtained with an x-ray streak camera, and filtered x-ray pinhole imaging was used to infer the electron temperature of the jet and shock. The topology of the ambient plasma density was found to have a significant effect on the jet and shock formation, as well as on their radiation characteristics. The experimental results were compared with radiation hydrodynamic simulations, thereby providing further insights into the underlying physical processes of the jet and shock formation and evolution. This paper describes design, development, and implementation of a multi-channel magnetic electron spectrometer for the application in laser–plasma interaction experiments carried out at the Prague Asterix Laser System. Modular design of the spectrometer allows the setup in variable configurations to evaluate the angular distribution of hot electron emission. The angular array configuration of the electron spectrometers consists of 16 channels mounted around the target. The modules incorporate a plastic electron collimator designed to suppress the secondary radiation by absorbing the wide angle scattered electrons and photons inside the collimator. The compact model of the spectrometer measures electron energies in the range from 50 keV to 1.5MeV using ferrite magnets and from 250 keV to 5MeV using stronger neodymium magnets. An extended model of the spectrometer increases the measured energy range up to 21MeV or 35MeV using ferrite or neodymium magnets, respectively. Position to energy calibration was obtained using the particle tracking simulations. The experimental results show the measured angularly resolved electron energy distribution functions from interaction with solid targets. The angular distribution of hot electron temperature, the total flux, and the maximum electron energy show a directional dependence. The measured values of these quantities increase toward the target normal. For a copper target, the average amount of measured electron flux is 1.36 × 1011, which corresponds to the total charge of about 21 nC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives. Cooccurrence of atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (PS) is not common. However, both diseases are still of interest because of their comprehensive and diverse mechanisms. This study aimed to present the clinical and immunological profiles of patients with concomitant AD and PS and compare them with those of patients with only one of the diseases. Methods. In this observational study, 38 children with concomitant AD and PS with a mean age of 6.5 ± 3.2 yrs were compared with 41 similar patients with AD only (5.3 ± 5.1 yrs) and 28 patients with PS only (6.4 ± 4.3 yrs). All patients underwent dermatological examinations, including determination of SCORAD and PASI scores. TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, IL-17, IL-18, IL-22, I:-33, and TARC/CCL17 were measured by ELISA according to the manufacturer's instructions. Results. Patients with concomitant AD and PS were frequently boys and overweight and had skin lesions equally distributed throughout the body. Children with concomitant AD and PS were more likely to report a family history of atopic disease than children with only AD or PS, and those with AD were more likely to report a family history of atopic disease than those with PS. Significant differences were observed in the concentration of IL-17 between patients with AD and PS and those with only AD or PS: 9.1 ± 3.7 pg/ml vs. 4.8 ± 2.9 pg/ml; and 9.1 ± 3.7 pg/ml vs. 5.2 ± 3.9 pg/ml, respectively (PD vs. AD, p = 0.01 ; PD vs. PS, p = 0.03). Generation of spontaneous magnetic fields (SMFs) is one of the most interesting phenomena accompanying an intense laser–matter interaction. One method of credible SMFs measurements is based on the magneto-optical Faraday effect, which requires simultaneous measurements of an angle of polarization plane rotation of a probe wave and plasma electron density. In classical polaro-interferometry, these values are provided independently by polarimetric and interferometric images. Complex interferometry is an innovative approach in SMF measurement, obtaining information on SMF directly from a phase–amplitude analysis of an image called a complex interferogram. Although the theoretical basis of complex interferometry has been well known for many years, this approach has not been effectively employed in laser plasma research until recently; this approach has been successfully implemented in SMF measurement at the Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS). In this paper, proprietary construction solutions of polaro-interferometers are presented; they allow us to register high-quality complex interferograms in practical experiments, which undergo quantitative analysis (with an original software) to obtain information on the electron density and SMFs distributions in an examined plasma. The theoretical foundations of polaro-interferometric measurement, in particular, complex-interferometry, are presented. The main part of the paper details the methodology of the amplitude–phase analysis of complex interferograms. This includes software testing and examples of the electron density and SMF distribution of a laser ablative plasma generated by irradiating Cu thick planar targets with an iodine PALS laser at an intensity above about 1016 W/cm2. Laser plasma created by intense light interaction with matter plays an important role in high-energy density fundamental studies and many prospective applications. Terawatt laser-produced plasma related to the low collisional and relativistic domain may form supersonic flows and is prone to the generation of strong spontaneous magnetic fields. The comprehensive experimental study presented in this work provides a reference point for the theoretical description of laser-plasma interaction, focusing on the hot electron generation. It experimentally quantifies the phenomenon of hot electron retention, which serves as a boundary condition for most plasma expansion models. Hot electrons, being responsible for nonlocal thermal and electric conductivities, are important for a large variety of processes in such plasmas. The multiple-frame complex-interferometric data providing information on time resolved spontaneous magnetic fields and electron density distribution, complemented by particle spectra and x-ray measurements, were obtained under irradiation of the planar massive Cu and plastic-coated targets by the iodine laser pulse with an intensity of above 1016 W cm−2. The data shows that the hot electron emission from the interaction region outside the target is strongly suppressed, while the electron flow inside the target, i.e. in the direction of the incident laser beam, is a dominant process and contains almost the whole hot electron population. The obtained quantitative characterization of this phenomenon is of primary importance for plasma applications spanning from ICF to laser-driven discharge magnetic field generators. The Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS) is a terawatt iodine laser (1.2 kJ, 350 ps, 1315 nm), designed to deliver irradiance on target of about 3 x 1016 W/cm². The PALS laser together with a Ti:sapphire laser (1 J, 50 fs, 800 nm) is used for experiments allowing femtosecond probing of laser-produced plasma. We present an experimental study of emission of hot electrons, fast ions and fusion neutrons generated through the ²H(d;n)³ He fusion reaction of deuterons. During the laser--plasma interaction and plasma expansion, a multi-population of electrons appears. Non-isotropic emission of fast as well as thermal electrons is typical for the interaction of nanosecond laser radiation with plasma. The production of relativistic electrons makes it possible to accelerate protons to MeV energy and generate fusion neutrons via fusion reactions. The DD-neutron yield is compared to yields obtained from other experiments. The laser-induced Cavity Pressure Acceleration (CPA) scheme [S. Borodziuk et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 95, 231501 (2009)] allows for effective transformation of the laser energy into the kinetic energy of plasma streams and dense plasma objects. It has been proven that using long-wavelength laser beams, with relatively low energies (up to 500 J for λ1 = 1.315 µm and FWHM = 350 ps), it is possible to accelerate macroparticles to very high velocities (above 107 cm/s). The study of neutron yield showed the benefit of CPA in delivering ion temperatures and density sufficient to reach the thermonuclear region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experiments were performed using the Prague Asterix Laser System to study the effect of expanding plasma on electromagnetic pulse propagation (EMP) in the interaction chamber in an intensity regime of 1016 W cm-2. Similar to the interaction that occurs between radio waves and the ionosphere, the expansion of laser-produced plasma causes the vacuum chamber to be gradually filled with inhomogeneous plasma that interacts with the emitted EMP. Combining the space-time analysis of a plasma density inside the interaction chamber and the fast Fourier transform filtering of antenna signals, we have resolved the influence of the expanding plasma on space-time characteristics of EMP. Geometric structure of global integral variational functionals on higher order tangent bundles and Grassmann fibrations are investigated. The theory of Lepage forms is extended to these structures. The concept of a Lepage form allows us to introduce the Euler-Lagrange distribution for variational functionals, depending on velocities, in a similar way as in the calculus of variations on ifbred manifolds. Integral curves of this distribution include all extremal curves of the underlying variational functional. The generators of the Euler-Lagrange distribution, defined by the Lepage forms of the first order, are found explicitly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a contribution to minimization of fuzzy automata. Traditionally, the problem of minimization of fuzzy automata is described as follows. Given a fuzzy automaton, describe an automaton with the minimal number of states which recognizes the same language as the given one. In this paper, we formulate a different problem. Namely, the minimal fuzzy automaton we are looking for is required to recognize a language which is similar to the language of the given fuzzy automaton to a certain degree a prescribed by a user, such as a = 0.9. That is, we relax the condition for the languages of the automata from being equal to a weaker condition of being similar to degree a. The condition of being equal is a special case for a = 1. We present answers to several problems which arise in this setting including a description of a minimal fuzzy automaton satisfying the above condition. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled sleep laboratory study single doses of suriclone, a new non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic binding to benzodiazepine receptors, were investigated with respect to sleep and awakening. 2. Sixteen healthy young volunteers spent 10 nights in the sleep laboratory: 1 adaptation night, 1 baseline night and 4 drug nights (placebo; 0.2 mg, 0.4 mg suriclone; 2 mg lorazepam as reference drug) and 4 subsequent wash-out nights (drug-interval: 1 week). Somnopolygraphic investigations (22.30 h to 06.00 h) were commenced 0.5 h after drug-intake. A self-rating scale for sleep and awakening quality as well as psychometric tests were completed in the morning. 3. Hypnotic effects were most pronounced after lorazepam in regard to total sleep time and sleep efficiency. After lorazepam as well as after 0.4 mg suriclone nocturnal awakenings decreased significantly as compared with placebo, which was reflected in an improved subjective sleep quality after both dosages. Suriclone 0.2 mg did not induce any alterations in all night sleep. 4. In the morning, well-being, drowsiness and reaction time performance deteriorated after lorazepam as compared with placebo but not after suriclone. The latter was significantly superior to lorazepam with respect to subjective awakening quality, well-being, emotional rapport, drowsiness and attention. 5. Blood pressure and pulse remained unchanged after all of the drugs. Critical flicker frequency and muscle strength decreased only after lorazepam as compared with placebo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the response of a 2D nonlinear oscillator (exemplified in this work by the two-junction superconducting quantum interference device - SQUID) subject to a weak time-periodic target signal, just past the onset of a saddle-node bifurcation. Adjusting the control parameters of the device allows us to identify a regime wherein the response (characterized by an output signal-to-noise ratio at the target frequency) is maximal. The phenomenon has the flavor of the well-studied stochastic resonance effect but is, in fact, shown to arise from a nonlinear deterministic resonance in the “running solution” regime.
