Speleothem oxygen isotope records (δ18O) of tropical South American rainfall in the late Quaternary show a zonal "South American Precipitation Dipole" (SAPD). The dipole is characterized by opposing east‐west precipitation anomalies compared to the present—wetter in the east and drier in the west at the mid‐Holocene (∼7 ka), and drier in the east and wetter in the west at the Last Glacial Maximum (∼21 ka). However, the SAPD remains enigmatic because it is expressed differently in western versus eastern δ18O records and isotope‐enabled climate model simulations usually misrepresent the magnitude and/or spatial pattern of δ18O change. Here, we address the SAPD enigma in two parts. First, we re‐interpret the δ18O data to account for upwind rainout effects that are known to be pervasive in tropical South America, but are not always considered in Quaternary paleoclimate studies. Our revised interpretation reconciles the δ18O data with cave infiltration and other proxy records, and indicates that the centroid of tropical South American rainfall has migrated zonally over time. Second, using an energy balance model of tropical atmospheric circulation, we hypothesize that zonal migration of the precipitation centroid can be explained by regional energy budget shifts, such as changing Saharan albedo associated with the African Humid Period, that have not been modeled in previous SAPD studies. This hypothesis of a migrating precipitation centroid presents a new framework for interpreting δ18O records from tropical South America and may help explain the zonal rainfall anomalies that predate the late Quaternary. Plain Language Summary: Paleoclimate data suggest that, in the last ∼25,000 years, tropical South American precipitation has changed substantially, but in opposite directions between the east and west. This opposing east‐west pattern in past rainfall is known as the "South American Precipitation Dipole," and its end‐member states approximately coincide with the Last Glacial Maximum (∼21,000 years ago) and mid‐Holocene (∼7,000 years ago), respectively. However, the cause of the dipole is debated because different models produce different results, and the interpretations of data are in conflict. Central in this conflict are oxygen isotope tracers of past precipitation which show different trends over space. We present a new interpretation of these data, backed by model results, which suggests that the dipole is driven by the centroid, or focus, of tropical South American precipitation migrating from west‐to‐east (and back) across tropical South America. We test this precipitation centroid migration hypothesis with an energy balance climate model which reproduces the expected east‐west differences for the Last Glacial Maximum and mid‐Holocene. The precipitation centroid migration hypothesis is a possible solution to the precipitation dipole enigma, but it remains to be tested in more sophisticated climate models. Objectives: Biologics are medications widely applied in the management of inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The drugs were found to be effective but their application is associated with some disadvantages. Medication with biologics is relatively expensive, and in Poland, it is carried out in specialized centers. The study was designed to evaluate various aspects of satisfaction and dissatisfaction of Polish patients treated with biologics., Material and Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was distributed in 23 Polish rheumatological centers involved in the treatment; 1212 returned questionnaires were used for analysis. Responses were received from 606 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 427 with ankylosing spondylitis, 117 psoriatic arthritis, and 62 adult patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (in whom administration of the drugs had been introduced before they were 18 years old). The investigated group constituted about one-fifth of all rheumatic patients on biologics in Poland., Results: A beneficial or very beneficial influence of the medication on the state of physical health was found mostly in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (51.3 and 30.5%) and ankylosing spondylitis (51.0 and 36.8%). Family life was improved by the treatment especially in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (40.7 and 35.6% beneficial and very beneficial, respectively), sleep quality and sexual life mostly in those with ankylosing spondylitis (beneficial/very beneficial influence 41.5/38.4, and 38.7/23.9, respectively). There was a rather small influence of biological treatment on the financial situation of the patients. In general, satisfaction with the treatment was evaluated as positive or very positive in 88% of all investigated patients.In a significant part of the patients, transportation to the medical center was considered as a disadvantage of the treatment. About one-third of the patients considered laboratory and imaging tests to be done before initiation of the medication as a difficulty, and for about 40% waiting time for qualification for the medication was a significant disadvantage. The route of drug administration was without importance for 4/5 of the patients., Conclusions: Summing up, the results were similar in the patients suffering from various diseases although those with psoriatic arthritis felt the highest satisfaction (possibly due to the positive aesthetic effect), and those with ankylosing spondylitis had significant improvement in sexual life (probably due to younger age). Relatively low satisfaction was found in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. There was a small influence of medication on financial status of the patients. Application of biologics has few disadvantages and most of them are associated with the organization of health services (waiting time for the tests, transportation to the medical centers)., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Molecular docking and dynamics studies are of considerable importance in a range of disciplines including molecular biology, drug design, environmental studies, psychology, etc. Using in silico tools to support or even to substitute wet laboratory work could help better focusing the laboratory experiments resulting not only in considerable saving of resources but also increasing the number of molecules and scenarios investigated. There are several software packages that support in silico modeling. However, these tools require lot of compute resources and special technical knowledge. As a result, many bio-scientists cannot use them. The paper describes a science gateway based solution which provides access to Distributed Computing Infrastructures such as clouds, desktop and service grids. This environment enables bio-scientists to execute simple molecular modeling scenarios or build more complex use-cases from existing building blocks while hiding the technical details of the infrastructure. Four scenarios have been defined and deconstructed in order to identify common building blocks supporting a large number of complex use-cases. A reference implementation for the first scenario regarding the impact on indicator species of pharmaceuticals released into water courses has been implemented on the EDGI infrastructure, demonstrating the feasibility of the approach.

Although many scientific applications rely on data stored in databases, most workflow management systems are not capable of establishing database connections during workflow execution. For this reason, e-Scientists have to use different tools before workflow submission to access their datasets and gather the required data on which they want to carry out computational experiments. Open Grid Services Architecture Data Access and Integration (OGSA-DAI) is a good candidate to use as middleware providing access to several structured and semi-structured database products through Web/Grid services. The integration technique and its reference implementation described in this paper enable e-Scientists to reach databases via OGSA-DAI within their scientific workflows at run-time and give a general solution that can be adopted by any workflow management system.
