The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter established by observations with ground-based gamma-ray detectors. Here we report the long-term monitoring of M87 from 2021 to 2024 with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). M87 has been detected by LHAASO with a statistical significance ∼ 9 σ . The observed energy spectrum extends to 20 TeV, with a possible hardening at ∼20 TeV and then a clear softening at higher energies. Assuming that the intrinsic spectrum is described by a single power law up to 20 TeV, a tight upper bound on the extragalactic background light intensity is obtained. A strong VHE flare lasting 8 days, with a rise time of ${\tau }_{r}^{\mathrm{rise}}=1.05\pm 0.49$ days and decay time of ${\tau }_{d}^{\mathrm{decay}}=2.17\pm 0.58$ days, was found in early 2022. A possible GeV flare is seen also in Fermi Large Area Telescope data during the VHE flare period. The variability time as short as 1 day seen in the LHAASO data suggests a compact emission region with a size of ∼3 × 10 ^15 δ cm ( δ being the Doppler factor of the emitting region), corresponding to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central supermassive black hole in M87. The continuous monitoring of the source reveals a duty cycle of ∼1% for VHE flares with a flux above 10 ^−11 erg cm ^−2 s ^−1 .

The first source catalog of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the detection of a very high energy gamma-ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. This Letter presents a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this pointlike source. The best-fit position of the TeV source (R.A. = 185.°05 ± 0.°04, decl. = 29.°25 ± 0.°03) is compatible with NGC 4278 within ∼0.°03. Variation analysis shows an indication of variability on a timescale of a few months in the TeV band, which is consistent with low-frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV γ -ray emissions from this low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. The observation by LHAASO's Water Cherenkov Detector Array during the active period has a significance level of 8.8 σ with a best-fit photon spectral index Γ = 2.56 ± 0.14 and a flux f _1–10 TeV = (7.0 ± 1.1 _sta ± 0.35 _syst ) × 10 ^−13 photons cm ^−2 s ^−1 , or approximately 5% of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission from NGC 4278 indicates that compact, weak radio jets can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons.

We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

Abstract The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.

Abstract Background Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a highly pruritic, chronic dermatosis and difficult to treat. PN lesions are characterized by existence of many hyperkeratotic, erosive papules and nodules. However, the pathogenesis of PN still remains unelucidated. Aim To clarify the keratin role in the epidermis hyperproliferation, the keratin expression pattern in the PN lesional skin. Methods In this study, we enrolled 24 patients with PN and 9 healthy control volunteers. K1/K10, K5/K14, K6/K16/K17 expression pattern were investigated by using immunohistochemical staining. Results The lesional skin consists of the thickened spinous layers, in which active cell division was found. K5/K14 were upregulated in PN lesional epidermis, the staining signal localized in the basal layer and lower suprabasal layers. Hyperproliferation‐associated K6 was found in all layers of epidermal lesional skin, especially in the spinous layers. In contrast, K16 was only detected in the basal and lower suprabasal layers, K17 was observed in the basal and spinous layers. Terminal differential keratins K1/K10 were upregulated, detected in the pan‐epidermis, but spared in the basal and low suprabasal layers. Conclusion The keratinocytes enter an alternative differentiation pathway, which are responsible for the activated keratinocyte phenotype, abnormal keratins expression potentially contributes to the keratinocytes proliferation, subsequently lead to increased lesional skin epidermis thickness, hyperkeratiosis and alteration of skin barrier properties.

In situ measurements of ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO) and meteorological parameters were made from December 2007 to November 2009 at the Xianggelila Regional Atmosphere Background Station (28.006° N, 99.726° E; 3580 m a.s.l.), southwest China. It was found that both O3 and CO peaked in spring while the minima of O3 and CO occurred in summer and winter, respectively. A normalized indicator (marked as "Y") on the basis of the monthly normalized O3, CO and water vapor, is proposed to evaluate the occurrence of O3 downward transport from the upper, O3-rich atmosphere. This composite indicator has the advantage of being less influenced by the seasonal or occasional variations of individual factors. It is shown that the most frequent and effective transport occurred in winter (accounting for 39% of the cases on the basis of a threshold of the Y value larger than 4) and they can make a significant contribution to surface O3 at Xianggelila. A 9.6 ppb increase (21.0%) of surface ozone is estimated based on the impact of deep downward transport events in winter. A case of strong O3 downward transport event under the synoptic condition of a deep westerly trough is studied by the combination of the Y indicator, potential vorticity, total column ozone and trajectory analysis. Asian monsoon plays an important role in suppressing O3 accumulation in summer and fall. The seasonal variation of O3 downward transport, as suggested by the Y indicator at Xianggelila, is consistent with the seasonality of stratosphere-to-troposphere transport and the subtropical jet stream over the Tibetan Plateau.

Anode striations and wall charges, common phenomena in the plasma display panel (PDP) discharge process, are investigated by simulations in both alternating current coplanar and novel shadow mask PDPs. The formation process of striations is presented and the formation mechanism is investigated. The results reveal that in both structures there is an obvious correspondence between the striation distribution and both the negative and the positive charge accumulation on the dielectric layer above the anode. Each of the two contributions to the total wall charge reaches its peak at the positions where the striations emerge. The total wall charge distribution on the other hand, which is the sum of the wall charge collected from electrons and ions, does not show any striation effect at all. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We prepared Codoped ZnO films by the electrochemical deposition. Xray diffraction XRD, high resolution transmission microscopy HRTEM, xray photoelectron spectroscopy XPS, atomic force microscope AFM, xray absorption nearedge structure XANES, vibrating sample magnetometer VSM, optical absorption, and photoluminescence PL measurements were carried out on the samples. The results showed Co atoms substituted Zn atoms in the ZnO lattice without the formation of the impurity phase. VSM measurements showed the ferromagnetic properties for the Codoped ZnO samples. When the Co doping concentration increased, the band gaps were widened and the PL peak positions shifted towards the short wavelength direction. © 2009 WILEYVCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Wellfaceted hexagonal ZnO nanorods have been synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method at relative low temperature 90°C without any catalysts or templates. Zinc oxide ZnO nanorods were grown in an aqueous solution that contained Zinc chloride ZnCl2, Aldrich, purity 98 and ammonia 25. Most of the ZnO nanorods show the perfect hexagonal cross section and wellfaceted top and side surfaces. The diameter of ZnO nanorods decreased with the reaction time prolonging. The samples have been characterized by Xray powder diffraction XRD and scanning electron microscopy SEM measurement. XRD pattern confirmed that the asprepared ZnO was the singlephase wurtzite structure formation. SEM results showed that the samples were rod textures. The surfacerelated optical properties have been investigated by photoluminescence PL spectrum and Raman spectrum. Photoluminescence measurements showed each spectrum consists of a weak band ultraviolet UV band and a relatively broad visible light emission peak for the samples grown at different time. ZnO nanostructures were grown on Aucoated Si 100 substrates by carbonthermal reduction method with the help of Ar at the beginning of growth. The structural and optical properties of ZnO nanostructures strongly depended on the supply time of Ar. When the given time of Ar gas current was 90s, sample was ZnO nanowires with hexagonal morphology. The Raman spectroscopy revealed the low level of oxygen vacancies and Zn interstitials in samples. Room temperature photoluminescence PL spectra exhibited the intensity of green emission increased on the condition of rich oxygen decrease given time of Ar and the nanowire had strongest intensity of UV emission compared with other nanostructures. Zinc oxide (ZnO), with its excellent luminescent properties and the ease of growth of its nanostructures, holds promise for the development of photonic devices. The recent advances in growth of ZnO nanorods are discussed. Results from both low temperature and high temperature growth approaches are presented. The techniques which are presented include metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD), vapour phase epitaxy (VPE), pulse laser deposition (PLD), vapour-liquid-solid (VLS), aqueous chemical growth (ACG) and finally the electrodeposition technique as an example of a selective growth approach. Results from structural as well as optical properties of a variety of ZnO nanorods are shown and analysed using different techniques, including high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL), for both room temperature and for low temperature performance. These results indicate that the grown ZnO nanorods possess reproducible and interesting optical properties. Results on obtaining p-type doping in ZnO micro- and nanorods are also demonstrated using PLD. Three independent indications were found for p-type conducting, phosphorus-doped ZnO nanorods: first, acceptor-related CL peaks, second, opposite transfer characteristics of back-gate field effect transistors using undoped and phosphorus doped wire channels, and finally, rectifying I-V characteristics of ZnO:P nanowire/ZnO:Ga p-n junctions. Then light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on n-ZnO nanorods combined with different technologies (hybrid technologies) are suggested and the recent electrical, as well as electro-optical, characteristics of these LEDs are shown and discussed. The hybrid LEDs reviewed and discussed here are mainly presented for two groups: those based on n-ZnO nanorods and p-type crystalline substrates, and those based on n-ZnO nanorods and p-type amorphous substrates. Promising electroluminescence characteristics aimed at the development of white LEDs are demonstrated. Although some of the presented LEDs show visible emission for applied biases in excess of 10 V, optimized structures are expected to provide the same emission at much lower voltage. Finally, lasing from ZnO nanorods is briefly reviewed. An example of a recent whispering gallery mode (WGM) lasing from ZnO is demonstrated as a way to enhance the stimulated emission from small size structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Severe exacerbation is the predominant cause of COPD hospitalisation. We investigated sex-specific risk factors of severe exacerbation and explored the potential interactions of regions, smoking status, and age.The present study included 13,641 males and 13,051 females with spirometry-defined COPD at baseline from the China Kadoorie Biobank. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of risk factors with severe exacerbation were estimated using the Cox models.During a median of 11.5 years follow-up, 5,967 cases of COPD hospitalisation were recorded. GOLD (Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease) stage, tobacco smoking, and underweight were positively associated with COPD hospitalisation in both sexes. Stronger associations were observed in females than in males; the corresponding HRs for males and females were respectively 1.87 (95% CI 1.73-2.03) and 2.47 (95% CI 2.24-2.72) for a history of respiratory diseases and 1.46 (95% CI 1.33-1.60) and 1.65 (95% CI 1.46-1.87) for coughing frequently and coughing up sputum after getting up in the morning for ≥3 months. Higher risks were found among urban residents, non-current smokers, and patients <60 years old.Our findings may help clinicians and the public to identify COPD patients at high risk of exacerbation requiring hospitalisation and take targeted measures in time..

We present the first measurement of nuclear recoils from solar ^{8}B neutrinos via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering with the XENONnT dark matter experiment. The central detector of XENONnT is a low-background, two-phase time projection chamber with a 5.9 t sensitive liquid xenon target. A blind analysis with an exposure of 3.51  t×yr resulted in 37 observed events above 0.5 keV, with (26.4&#95;{-1.3}^{+1.4}) events expected from backgrounds. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a statistical significance of 2.73σ. The measured ^{8}B solar neutrino flux of (4.7&#95;{-2.3}^{+3.6})×10^{6}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} is consistent with results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. The measured neutrino flux-weighted CEνNS cross section on Xe of (1.1&#95;{-0.5}^{+0.8})×10^{-39}  cm^{2} is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. This is the first direct measurement of nuclear recoils from solar neutrinos with a dark matter detector.

Ceratostigma willmottianum Stapf is a unique chalk gland (salt-excreting) plant from China, with a salt gland structure that excretes white crystals of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ), which has potential biomineralization and carbon sequestration functions. Due to the narrow distribution of wild germplasm resources, there is a lack of diversity of new varieties to satisfy commercial development and scientific exploration. Therefore, we used ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis to obtain new dwarf mutant germplasm, and analysed it in terms of morphology, growth, photosynthesis, salt glands, and excretion traits. All four dwarfing mutant strains (DM1, DM2, DM3, and DM4) exhibited extreme dwarfing (62.28%, 62.28%, 74.55% and 61.68% reduction in plant height, respectively), faster growth, increased belowground root biomass, and earlier bud differentiation and flowering. Photosynthetic capacity was enhanced: chlorophyll content, maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), electron transfer rate (ETR), net photosynthesis (Pn), intercellular CO 2 concentration (Ci), stomatal conductance (Gs), and transpiration (Tr), were significantly higher in leaves of DM mutants. The density of salt glands per unit leaf area and average Ca 2+ excretion rate of individual salt glands increased significantly (especially in DM2), and CaCO 3 accumulation per unit leaf area was 28.57% higher than that of the wild type. Pearson correlation analysis showed that photosynthetic capacity was significantly and positively correlated with CaCO 3 excretion. Objective: The length of newborns shows seasonal fluctuations, but the patterns of these fluctuations vary greatly. This study analyses the fluctuation in birth length by birth month and temporal changes in Austrian newborns from the 1984 to 2021 birth cohorts., Methods: A total of 2 317 927 singleton-term births between 1984 and 2021 in Austria were included in this retrospective population-based cohort study. A strict inclusion criterion was the Austrian citizenship of the mother. The effect of month of birth (MOB) on birth length was estimated using a multivariable linear model adjusting for maternal educational level, newborn sex, gestational age, year of birth (YOB) of the newborn, and parity of the mother., Results: Newborn length varied by MOB, but there was also a temporal trend. In the birth cohorts up to 2004, the longest newborns were born in February, while from 2008 onward, the longest birth lengths were observed in the summer months., Conclusion: In this Austrian population-based sample, birth length shows nonrandom fluctuations by birth month. This Letter reports the first measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay via neutron capture on hydrogen using 1958 days of data. With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive region, the relative ν[over ¯]&#95;{e} rates and energy spectra variation among the near and far detectors gives sin^{2}2θ&#95;{13}=0.0759&#95;{-0.0049}^{+0.0050} and Δm&#95;{32}^{2}=(2.72&#95;{-0.15}^{+0.14})×10^{-3}  eV^{2} assuming the normal neutrino mass ordering, and Δm&#95;{32}^{2}=(-2.83&#95;{-0.14}^{+0.15})×10^{-3}  eV^{2} for the inverted neutrino mass ordering. This estimate of sin^{2}2θ&#95;{13} is consistent with and essentially independent from the one obtained using the capture-on-gadolinium sample at Daya Bay. The combination of these two results yields sin^{2}2θ&#95;{13}=0.0833±0.0022, which represents an 8% relative improvement in precision regarding the Daya Bay full 3158-day capture-on-gadolinium result.

In recent years, the emergence and application of robotic computer-assisted implant surgery (r-CAIS) has resulted in a revolutionary shift in conventional implant diagnosis and treatment. This scoping review was performed to verify the null hypothesis that r-CAIS has a relatively high accuracy of within 1 mm, with relatively few complications and a short operative time. This review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). From the 3355 publications identified in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases, 28 were finally included after a comprehensive review and analysis. The null hypothesis is partly accepted, as r-CAIS has a relatively high accuracy (coronal and apical deviation within 1 mm), and no significant adverse events or complications have been reported to date, although additional confirmatory studies are needed. Objectives: Both obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) increase the risk of metabolic abnormalities. However, the metabolic status of children suffering from NAFLD and exhibiting various subtypes of obesity is currently unclear. We aimed to explore the association between NAFLD and metabolic abnormalities in children with different weight statuses., Methods: We included 6086 participants aged 6-18 years from the China Child and Adolescent NAFLD Study (CCANS), all of whom had undergone ultrasonography or magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) to identify NAFLD and metabolic abnormalities, including hyperglycemia, high triglycerides (TG), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high total cholesterol, and hyperuricemia., Results: Among the participants, there were 2408 children with obesity and NAFLD, 174 with NAFLD, 2396 with obesity, and 1108 without obesity and NAFLD. The odds ratios (ORs) of suffering from individual metabolic abnormalities were significantly greater in children with obesity and NAFLD than in children without obesity and NAFLD, with ORs ranging from 6.23 (95% CI: 4.56, 8.53) to 1.77 (95% CI: 1.06, 2.94). The ORs of metabolic abnormalities, except for low HDL-C, were greater in children with NAFLD alone than in children without obesity or NAFLD, with ORs ranging from 4.36 (95% CI: 2.77, 6.84) to 2.08 (95% CI: 1.14, 3.78). Notably, obesity and NAFLD had a multiplicative effect on overall metabolic abnormalities, high TG levels, and low HDL-C levels., Conclusions: Children with obesity and NAFLD could be at a significantly increased risk of metabolic abnormalities. Introduction and Objectives: Different degrees of testicular torsion result in varying degrees of testicular damage, which influences treatment options and outcomes. Therefore, establishing a testicular torsion model with different degrees is necessary for clinical diagnosis., Materials and Methods: Rabbits were randomly divided into four groups and their spermatic cords were twisted at 0 °, 180 °, 360 °, and 720 °, respectively. Color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) were performed to evaluate the blood supply in testicles. The twisted testicles were surgically removed at six hours post-operation and were evaluated by morphological observation and Hematoxylin and Eosin staining., Results: CDFI signals were gradually decreased as the degree of testicular torsion increased, and scores of CDFI in the 360 ° and 720 ° groups were significantly decreased at postoperative six hours compared to pre-surgery. Compared to the sham, the testicle in the 180 ° group exhibited slight congestion, whereas the testicles in the 360 ° and 720 ° groups were dark red in color and had severe congestion and unrecognizable vessels. Hematoxylin and Eosin staining showed mild spermatogenic cell reduction and testicular interstitial hemorrhage in the 180 ° group. In the 360 ° and 720 ° groups, disordered seminiferous tubules, shed spermatogenic cells in tubules, inflammatory cell infiltration, and severe hemorrhage were found. In comparison with the sham, interstitial hemorrhage scores in the 360 ° and 720 ° groups were significantly higher, and scores of germinal epithelial cell thickness in the three testicular torsion groups were significantly decreased., Conclusions: Collectively, we successfully constructed a testicular torsion model with different degrees in rabbits., (Copyright © 2024 AEU. Background: Research on the effectiveness of pharmacist-led antimicrobial stewardship programmes (ASPs) in the urology department is limited., Aim: To evaluate the impact of pharmacist-led multi-faceted ASPs on antibiotic use and clinical outcomes., Methods: A prescription review of inpatients receiving one or more antibiotics in the urology department of a large teaching hospital in Guangzhou, China, was conducted from April 2019 to March 2023. The pharmacist-led multi-faceted ASP intervention included guideline development, training, medication consultation, review of medical orders, indicator monitoring, and consultation. The primary outcome was antibiotic consumption. The data were analysed using interrupted time-series (ITS) analysis., Findings: Following the implementation of ASPs, an immediate decrease was observed in total antibiotic consumption, antibiotic use rate, second-generation cephalosporins, third-generation cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and WHO Watch category antibiotics. No differences were observed in mortality rate before and after the intervention, and no significant short- or long-term effects were found on length of hospital stay (LOS) using ITS. However, there was a significant short-term effect on average antibiotic cost., Conclusion: The implementation of pharmacist-led multi-faceted ASPs had positive impacts on reducing antimicrobial consumption without increasing LOS, antibiotic cost, or mortality rate., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Background: Evidence about a potential link between current and lifetime night shift work and risk of incident asthma is insufficient., Aim: To investigate the association of current and lifetime night shift work with risk of incident asthma, and the modified effect of genetic susceptibility on this association., Design and Methods: We included 253 773 individuals with complete night shift work information in the UK biobank. We calculated the standard polygenetic risk score (PRS) for asthma. The Cox proportional hazard models were conducted to estimate hazard ratios and 95% CIs., Results: After multivariable adjustments, we found that current night shift work was associated with an increased risk of incident asthma in a dose-response fashion (P for trend < 0.001). Compared with day workers, those working usual/permanent night shifts had a 17% (95% CI: 1.04-1.33) higher risk of asthma incidence. In addition, we observed significant dose-dependent relationships of longer lifetime duration or frequency of night shift work with elevated risk of asthma incidence (all P for trend < 0.05). Compared with never night shift workers, those with a duration (≥5 years) or frequency (≥8 nights/month) of night shift work exhibited a 20% (95% CI: 1.03-1.39) or 22% (95% CI: 1.03-1.44) higher risk of incident asthma, respectively. Moreover, the elevated risk of incident asthma related to current and lifetime night shift work exposure was strengthened by high PRS, although no significant shift work-PRS interactions were detected., Conclusion: Both current and lifetime night shift work may increase the risk of incident asthma, regardless of genetic predisposition to asthma., (© The Author(s) 2024. Aim: The objective of this study was to create and authenticate a prognostic model for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in colorectal cancer (CRC) that integrates clinical, radiomics, and deep transfer learning features., Materials and Methods: In this study, we analyzed data from 119 CRC patients who underwent F18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ( 18 F-FDG PET/CT) scanning. The patient cohort was divided into training and validation subsets in an 8:2 ratio, with an additional 33 external data points for testing. Initially, we conducted univariate analysis to screen clinical parameters. Radiomics features were extracted from manually drawn images using pyradiomics, and deep-learning features, radiomics features, and clinical features were selected using Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression and Spearman correlation coefficient. We then constructed a model by training a support vector machine (SVM), and evaluated the performance of the prediction model by comparing the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity. Finally, we developed nomograms combining clinical and radiological features for interpretation and analysis., Results: The deep learning radiomics (DLR) nomogram model, which was developed by integrating deep learning, radiomics, and clinical features, exhibited excellent performance. The area under the curve was (AUC = 0.934, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.884-0.983) in the training cohort, (AUC = 0.902, 95% CI: 0.769-1.000) in the validation cohort, and (AUC = 0.836, 95% CI: 0.673-0.998) in the test cohort., Conclusion: We developed a preoperative predictive machine-learning model using deep transfer learning, radiomics, and clinical features to differentiate LNM status in CRC, aiding in treatment decision-making for patients., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. This Letter presents results of a search for the mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with three active neutrinos based on the full data sample of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, collected during 3158 days of detector operation, which contains 5.55×10^{6} reactor ν[over ¯]&#95;{e} candidates identified as inverse beta-decay interactions followed by neutron capture on gadolinium. The analysis benefits from a doubling of the statistics of our previous result and from improvements of several important systematic uncertainties. No significant oscillation due to mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with active neutrinos was found. Exclusion limits are set by both Feldman-Cousins and CLs methods. Light sterile neutrino mixing with sin^{2}2θ&#95;{14}≳0.01 can be excluded at 95% confidence level in the region of 0.01  eV^{2}≲|Δm&#95;{41}^{2}|≲0.1  eV^{2}. This result represents the world-leading constraints in the region of 2×10^{-4}  eV^{2}≲|Δm&#95;{41}^{2}|≲0.2  eV^{2}.

1. Non-coding RNAs, such as miRNAs, play a crucial role in chicken feather growth rate. However, circular RNA (circRNA) expression profiles in fast- and slow-feathering chickens that follow and do not follow Mendelian inheritance are unclear.2. The circRNA expression profiles was analysed by RNA sequencing of hair follicles of slow-feathering chickens that follow genetic rules and fast-feathering chickens that did not follow genetic rules. Differentially expressed circRNA-miRNA-mRNA competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was then constructed and the key factors and regulation mechanisms controlling feather growth rate were identified.3. The results revealed that 67 circRNAs were significantly differentially expressed in hens, including 22 up-regulated and 45 down-regulated circRNAs in non-Mendelian inheritance-mediated fast-feathering hens compared with Mendelian inheritance-mediated slow-feathering hens. In addition, 16 significantly differentially expressed circRNAs were identified in cockerels, including nine up-regulated and seven down-regulated circRNAs in non-Mendelian inheritance-mediated fast- compared with Mendelian inheritance-mediated slow-feathering cocks. Moreover, circRNA-mediated ceRNA regulation of hair follicle formation was particularly abundant in the Jak-STAT, Wnt and Toll-like receptor signalling pathways. Furthermore, circABI3BP was seen to be a crucial circRNA in regulating feather growth rate, by binding with gga-miR-1649-5p to regulate SSTR2 expression.4. In conclusion, this study analysed circRNA expression profiles in fast- and slow-feathering chickens that follow and do not follow Mendelian inheritance, which laid the foundation for understanding the role of circRNA in chicken feather growth rate.

Objective: To investigate adherence to intravascular catheter (IVC) insertion and maintenance guidelines in Chinese tertiary hospitals., Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey of adult inpatients with IVC placements was conducted from July to September 2022 in 20 tertiary hospitals in China. One clinical staff member from each department in each hospital was assigned to participate in the survey. Questionnaires were uniformly collected and reviewed after three months., Results: This study included 1815 cases (62.69%) of central venous catheter, 471 cases (16.27%) of peripherally inserted central catheter, 461 cases (15.92%) of PORT, and 147 cases (5.08%) of haemodialysis catheter insertions. Statistically significant differences in compliance were observed across the four IVC types, specifically in relation to the insertion checklist, standard operating procedure, and insertion environment (P<0.05). Practice adherence during IVC maintenance differed significantly across the four IVC types in aspects such as availability of IVC maintenance verification forms, daily scrubbing of the catheterized patients, and catheter connection methods (P<0.05). A total of 386 (13.34%) patients developed fever, 1086 (37.53%) were treated with therapeutic antibiotics, 16 (0.55%) developed central-line-associated bloodstream infections, two (0.07%) developed local skin infections, and six (0.21%) developed deep vein thrombosis., Conclusions: Adherence to guidelines regarding insertion and maintenance differed across the four IVC types; there is a gap between the recommended measures and the actual operation of the guidelines. As the availability of data sets increases, meta-analysis leveraging aggregated and interoperable data types is proving valuable. This study leveraged a meta-analysis workflow to identify mutations that could improve robustness to reactive oxygen species (ROS) stresses using an industrially important melatonin production strain as an example. ROS stresses often occur during cultivation and negatively affect strain performance. Cellular response to ROS is also linked to the SOS response and resistance to pH fluctuations, which is important to strain robustness in large-scale biomanufacturing. This work integrated more than 7000 E. coli adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) mutations across 59 experiments to statistically associate mutated genes to 2 ROS tolerance ALE conditions from 72 unique conditions. Mutant oxyR , fur , iscR , and ygfZ were significantly associated and hypothesized to contribute fitness in ROS stress. Across these genes, 259 total mutations were inspected in conjunction with transcriptomics from 46 iModulon experiments. Ten mutations were chosen for reintroduction based on mutation clustering and coinciding transcriptional changes as evidence of fitness impact. Strains with mutations reintroduced into oxyR , fur , iscR , and ygfZ exhibited increased tolerance to H 2 O 2 and acid stress and reduced SOS response, all of which are related to ROS. Additionally, new evidence was generated toward understanding the function of ygfZ , an uncharacterized gene. This meta-analysis approach utilized aggregated and interoperable multiomics data sets to identify mutations conferring industrially relevant phenotypes with the least drawbacks, describing an approach for data-driven strain engineering to optimize microbial cell factories.

Inflammation plays a crucial role in progression of fibrosis. Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EET) have multiple protective effects in different diseases, but their ability to inhibit the development of LPS-induced fibrosis remains unknown. The potential therapeutic effects of 11,12-EET were studied in in vitro model of LPS-induced fibrosis. Mouse embryonic fibroblast cells NIH/3T3 were pre-incubated with 1 μM 11,12-EET and/or a structural analogue and selective EET antagonist 14,15-epoxyeicosa-5(Z)-enoic acid before exposing to LPS. The effect of EET was evaluated by the protein and mRNA expression of NF-κB, collagens I and III, and α-smooth muscle actin by Western blotting and quantitative reverse transcription PCR, respectively. LPS provoked inflammation and fibrosis-like changes accompanied by elevated expression of NF-κB and collagens in NIH/3T3 cells. We also studied the effects of 11,12-EET on the A 2A R and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways in intact and LPS-treated NIH/3T3 cells. 11,12-EET prevented inflammation and fibrosis-like changes through up-regulation of A 2A R and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of solid-state fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) inclusion levels on the growth performance, serum biochemical parameters and hepatic lipid metabolism in geese from 28 to 70 d of age. A total of 288 twenty-eight-d-old male geese were randomly divided into 4 treatments with FCSM levels of 0, 5, 15 and 25% including 0, 22.74, 67.33, 111.27 mg FG/kg diet, respectively. Each treatment contained 6 replicates and 12 birds per replicate. Treatments of FCSM inclusions from 0 to 25% had no effect on growth rate and feed intake in geese during d 28 to 70. The F/G ratio was increased (P < 0.05) in geese fed the diet with 25% FCSM compared with birds fed the diet with 0% FCSM. Treatment with 25% FCSM levels had no effect on the contents of TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C, but increased (P < 0.05) AST and ALT activities in serum of geese at d 70. Treatment with 25% FCSM increased the contents of FG, HDL-C, TC, C18:2n6, C20:4n6 and PUFA and decreased (P < 0.05) the contents of NEFA, SFA, MUFA in liver compared with treatment of 0% FCSM inclusion. Additionally, treatment with 25% FCSM decreased (P < 0.05) the PPARα, AMPK, and LXR mRNA expression related to lipid deposition, and increased (P < 0.05) PPARγ and ACC mRNA expression related to lipolysis in liver compared with birds fed the diet with 0% FCSM. Overall, treatment with 0 to 15% FCSM (<=67.33 mg FG/kg diet) had no adverse effects on the growth performance and lipid metabolism of geese. However, treatment fed 25% FCSM (111.27 mg FG/kg diet) decreased feed efficiency and promoted hepatic lipid deposition associated with the alteration of related gene expression in geese at 28 to 70 d of age., (Copyright © 2024. Aims: SIRT1 deficiency has been associated with diabetes, and a variant of the SIRT1 gene has been found to be involved in human autoimmune diabetes; however, it is unclear whether this genetic variation exists in Han Chinese with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and whether it contributes to development of T1D. Therefore, we aimed to explore the association of the SIRT1 gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs10997866 and rs3818292 in a Han Chinese population with T1D., Methods: This study recruited 2653 unrelated Han Chinese individuals, of whom 1289 had T1D and 1364 were healthy controls. Allelic and genotypic distributions of SIRT1 polymorphisms (rs10997866 and rs3818292) were determined by MassARRAY. Basic characteristics, genotype and allele frequencies of selected SNPs were compared between the T1D patients and healthy controls. Further genotype-phenotype association analysis of the SNPs was performed on the T1D patients divided into three groups according to genotype. Statistical analyses included the chi-square test, Mann‒Whitney U test, Kruskal‒Wallis H test and logistic regression., Results: The allelic (G vs. A) and genotypic (GA vs. AA) distributions of SIRT1 rs10997866 were significantly different in T1D patients and healthy controls (P = 0.039, P = 0.027), and rs10997866 was associated with T1D susceptibility under dominant, overdominant and additive models (P = 0.026, P = 0.030 and P = 0.027, respectively). Moreover, genotype-phenotype association analysis showed the GG genotype of rs10997866 and the GG genotype of rs3818292 to be associated with higher titers of IA-2A (P = 0.013 and P = 0.038, respectively)., Conclusion: SIRT1 rs10997866 is significantly associated with T1D susceptibility, with the minor allele G conferring a higher risk of T1D. Detection of low viral load samples has long been a challenge for African swine fever (ASF) prevention and control. This study aimed to compare the detection efficacy of droplet digital PCR(ddPCR) and quantitative PCR(qPCR) for African swine fever virus (ASFV) at different viral loads, with a focus on assessing the accuracy of ddPCR in detecting low viral load samples. The results revealed that ddPCR had a detection limit of 1.97 (95% CI 1.48 - 4.12) copies/reaction and was 18.99 times more sensitive than qPCR (detection limit: 37.42, 95% CI 29.56 - 69.87 copies/reaction). In the quantification of high, medium, and low viral load samples, ddPCR showed superior stability with lower intra- (2.06% - 7.58%) and inter-assay (3.83% - 7.50%) coefficients of variation than those of qPCR (intra-assay: 8.08%-29.86%; inter-assay: 9.27%-34.58%). Bland-Altman analysis indicated acceptable consistency between ddPCR and qPCR for high and medium viral load samples; however, discrepancies were observed for low viral load samples, where two samples (2/24, 8.33%) exhibited deviations beyond the acceptable range (-46.18 copies/reaction). Moreover, ddPCR demonstrated better performance in detecting ASFV in clinical samples from asymptomatic pigs and environmental samples, with qPCR showing false negative rates of 7.69% (2/26) and 27.27% (12/44), respectively. McNemar analysis revealed significant differences between the two methods ( P  = 0.000) for samples with a viral load <100 copies/reaction. The results of this study demonstrate that ddPCR has better detection limits and adaptability than qPCR, allowing for a more accurate detection of ASFV in early-stage infections and low-concentration environmental samples. Background: Maternal and neonatal disorders account for substantial health loss across the lifespan from early childhood. These problems may be related to health inequality., Aim: To provide evidence for improvement in health policies regarding maternal and neonatal disorder inequity., Design: This was a population-based cross-sectional study based on 2019 Global Burden of Disease data., Methods: Annual cases and age-standardized rates (ASRs) of incidence, prevalence, death, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in maternal and neonatal disorders between 1990 and 2019 were collected from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study. Concentration curves and concentration indices were used to summarize the degree of socioeconomic-related inequality., Results: For maternal disorders, the global ASRs of incidence, prevalence, death and DALYs were 2889.4 (95% uncertainty interval (UI), 2562.9-3251.9), 502.9 (95% UI 418.7-598.0), 5.0 (95% UI 4.4-5.8) and 324.9 (95% UI 284.0-369.1) per 100 000 women in 2019, respectively. The ASRs of maternal disorders were all obviously reduced and remained pro-poor from 1990 to 2019. In neonatal disorders, the global ASRs of incidence, prevalence, death and DALYs were 363.3 (95% UI 334.6-396.8), 1239.8 (95% UI 1142.1-1356.7), 29.1 (95% UI 24.8-34.5) and 2828.3 (95% UI 2441.6-3329.6) per 100 000 people in 2019, respectively. The global ASRs of incidence, death and DALYs in neonatal disorders have remained pro-poor. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dry eye on the reproducibility of keratometry (K) measurements in patients presenting for cataract surgery., Methods: A non-randomized controlled clinical study was performed. Eighty-three eyes of eighty-three patients with cataracts who were enrolled in our hospital from March 2020 to July 2020 were studied. The mean non-invasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT), corneal fluorescein staining score, and ocular surface disease (OSD) SPEED II questionnaire were measured and recorded prior to surgery, and the patients were assigned to a "dry eye" group (n=35) or a "non-dry eye" group (n=48). The K of the patients was measured twice by a Tomey OA-2000 (an average of three times each). The difference of the mean K (ΔKm) and astigmatism vector (ΔK vector ) between the two measurements was calculated. The ΔKm and ΔK vector between the two groups were compared. The relationship between the measurement parameters of dry eyes and the accuracy of the preoperative K values was analyzed., Results: ΔKm was 0.09 D [0.03; 0.19] in the non-dry eye control group and 0.28 D [0.18; 0.50] in the dry eye group, with a statistical difference between the two groups (P=0.005). The ΔK vector of the non-dry eye control group was 0.22 D [0.14; 0.42], and that of the dry eye group was 0.50 D [0.28; 1.06]. There was a significant difference between the two groups (P=0.010). Between the two groups, the percentage of the ΔKm and ΔK vector values greater than 0.5 D were statistically different (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in ΔKm between the groups with NIBUT>5s and NIBUT≤5s (P=0.537). There was no significant difference in ΔKm between groups≥2 and<2 on the OSD SPEED II questionnaire scores (P=0.442)., Conclusion: Dry eye can affect the reliability of keratometry measurements before cataract surgery, thereby affecting the accuracy of intraocular lens power calculations. Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors in combination with tyrosine kinase inhibitors are standard treatments for advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This phase III RENOTORCH study compared the efficacy and safety of toripalimab plus axitinib versus sunitinib for the first-line treatment of patients with intermediate-/poor-risk advanced RCC., Patients and Methods: Patients with intermediate-/poor-risk unresectable or metastatic RCC were randomized in a ratio of 1 : 1 to receive toripalimab (240 mg intravenously once every 3 weeks) plus axitinib (5 mg orally twice daily) or sunitinib [50 mg orally once daily for 4 weeks (6-week cycle) or 2 weeks (3-week cycle)]. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) assessed by an independent review committee (IRC). The secondary endpoints were investigator-assessed PFS, overall response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS), and safety., Results: A total of 421 patients were randomized to receive toripalimab plus axitinib (n = 210) or sunitinib (n = 211). With a median follow-up of 14.6 months, toripalimab plus axitinib significantly reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 35% compared with sunitinib as assessed by an IRC [hazard ratio (HR) 0.65, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.49-0.86; P = 0.0028]. The median PFS was 18.0 months in the toripalimab-axitinib group, whereas it was 9.8 months in the sunitinib group. The IRC-assessed ORR was significantly higher in the toripalimab-axitinib group compared with the sunitinib group (56.7% versus 30.8%; P < 0.0001). An OS trend favoring toripalimab plus axitinib was also observed (HR 0.61, 95% CI 0.40-0.92). Treatment-related grade ≥3 adverse events occurred in 61.5% of patients in the toripalimab-axitinib group and 58.6% of patients in the sunitinib group., Conclusion: In patients with previously untreated intermediate-/poor-risk advanced RCC, toripalimab plus axitinib provided significantly longer PFS and higher ORR than sunitinib and had a manageable safety profile TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04394975., (Copyright © 2023 X. In this study, we present an in-depth characterization of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) film, using a range of techniques to understand the structure and chemistry of the film both in the interior and particularly at the DLC/air surface and DLC/liquid interface. The DLC film is found to be a combination of sp 2 and sp 3 carbon, with significant oxygen present at the surface. The oxygen seems to be present as OH groups, making the DLC somewhat hydrophilic. Quartz-Crystal Microbalance (QCM) isotherms and complementary neutron reflectivity data indicate significant adsorption of a model additive, bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) surfactant, onto the DLC from water solutions and indicate the adsorbed film is a bilayer. This initial study of the structure and composition of a model surfactant is intended to give a clearer insight into how DLC and additives function as antiwear systems.

Background: Shift work, the proven circadian rhythm-disrupting behavior, has been linked to the increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the putative causal effect and potential mechanisms of shift work for AD were still unclear., Methods: Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to discover the putative causal effect of shift work for AD. Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) and transcriptome data were integrated to identify genes causally associated with AD from circadian-related genes. An in vitro experiment was also conducted to validate the expression of target genes. Based on the identified genes, a novel integrative program and 4,077 samples from 16 microarray datasets were leveraged to assess the extent of circadian rhythm disruption (CRD), defined as the clock deviation level (CDL)., Findings/results: Shift work causally increased the risk of AD [odds ratio (OR) = 2.49, 95% CI = 1.79 - 3.19, p = 0.01]. Seven circadian-related genes were causally associated with AD, including CCS, CDS2, MYRIP, NRP1, PLEKHA5, POLR1D, and PPP4C. These genes were significantly correlated with the circadian rhythm pathway. CDL was higher in CRD mice group, shift work group, sleep restriction group, and AD patients compared to control mice group (p = 0.043), non-shift group (p = 0.004), sleep extension group (p = 0.025), and health controls (multiple cohorts, p < 0.05). Additionally, CDL was also significantly correlated with AD's clinical biomarkers., Interpretations/conclusion: By combining GWAS and transcriptome data, this study demonstrated the causal role of CRD behavior in AD, identified the potential target genes in shift work-induced AD, and generated CDL to characterize CRD status, which provided evidence and prospects for disease prevention and future therapeutic interventions., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests.

The multi-staged XENON program at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso aims to detect dark matter with two-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers of increasing size and sensitivity. The XENONnT experiment is the latest detector in the program, planned to be an upgrade of its predecessor XENON1T. It features an active target of 5.9 tonnes of cryogenic liquid xenon (8.5 tonnes total mass in cryostat). The experiment is expected to extend the sensitivity to WIMP dark matter by more than an order of magnitude compared to XENON1T, thanks to the larger active mass and the significantly reduced background, improved by novel systems such as a radon removal plant and a neutron veto. Identifying the protective and risk factors for Alzheimer's disease, as well as its possible underlying molecular processes, can facilitate the development of interventions that can slow its progression. Observational studies and randomized controlled trials have provided some evidence regarding potential risk factors for Alzheimer's disease; however, the results of these studies vary. Mendelian randomization is a novel epidemiological methodology primarily used to infer causal relationships between exposures and outcomes. Many Mendelian randomization studies have identified potential causal relationships between Alzheimer's disease and certain diseases, lifestyle habits, and biological exposures, thus providing valuable data for further mechanistic studies and the development and implementation of clinical prevention strategies. However, the results and data from Mendelian randomization studies must be interpreted based on comprehensive evidence. Moreover, the existing Mendelian randomization studies on the epidemiology of Alzheimer's disease have some limitations that are worth exploring. Therefore, the aim of this review was to summarize the available evidence on the potential protective and risk factors for Alzheimer's disease by assessing published Mendelian randomization studies on Alzheimer's disease, and to provide new perspectives on the etiology of Alzheimer's disease., Competing Interests: None.

Aim: To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of first-line treatments for advanced unresectable oesophageal squamous cell cancer., Materials and Methods: A systematic review and network meta-analysis was carried out by retrieving and retaining relevant literature from databases. The studies were randomised controlled trials comparing first-line treatments for advanced unresectable oesophageal squamous cell cancer. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to assess clinical outcomes., Results: Nine studies including 4499 patients receiving first-line treatments were analysed. For all populations, toripalimab plus chemotherapy tended to provide the best overall survival (hazard ratio 0.58, 95% confidence intervals 0.43-0.78) and sintilimab plus chemotherapy provided the best progression-free survival (0.56, 0.46-0.68). Nivolumab plus chemotherapy presented the best objective response rate (odds ratio 2.45, 1.78-3.42) and camrelizumab plus chemotherapy (0.47, 0.29-0.74) appeared to be the safest. Sintilimab plus chemotherapy (0.55, 0.40-0.75) and nivolumab (0.54, 0.37-0.80) plus chemotherapy had the best overall survival in programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) tumour proportion score <1% and ≥1% subgroups. Toripalimab plus chemotherapy (0.61, 0.40-0.93) and pembrolizumab (0.57, 0.43-0.75) were the best in overall survival in combined positive score <10 and ≥10 subgroups, respectively. Toripalimab plus chemotherapy showed the best overall survival in the Asian group; pembrolizumab presented better overall survival in the Asian population than the non-Asian group., Conclusion: Most immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy showed superior clinical benefits and sintilimab plus chemotherapy, toripalimab plus chemotherapy and tislelizumab plus chemotherapy had better comprehensive clinical efficacy. Objectives: Although infection rates may increase after relaxation of the zero COVID strategy, the extensive vaccination campaign in China could potentially curb the spread of COVID-19, which may be associated with a low level of risk perception and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). However, the relationship between vaccination, risk perception and PTSS has not been studied extensively. This study aims to examine the associations between the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses, consistency in the type of each dose and time since vaccination with PTSS, and the mediating role of risk perception on such relationships in China., Study Design: Cross-sectional sampling with a self-report questionnaire was used to measure vaccination, PTSS and risk perception., Methods: The survey was conducted in Beijing, China, from 13 January to 9 February 2023. Linear regression analyses were conducted to test the relationship between vaccination, risk perception and PTSS., Results: The analysis included 55,803 individuals. In total, 72.86 % of participants received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Regression results indicated that people with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had a lower level of PTSS (β = -1.232, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: -1.930, -0.534) than those who had not received any doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Only the negative relationship between two-dose vaccination and PTSS was mediated by risk perception, while the negative relationship between the time since vaccination and PTSS was suppressed by risk perception., Conclusions: This study showed that receiving the COVID-19 vaccine reduced PTSS by decreasing perceived risk.
