Abstract

Mitochondria are a crucial cellular organelle that organizes a wide range of biological processes, from energy production and calcium homeostasis to cell proliferation, differentiation, and death as well as inflammation. Mitochondria also support immune cell phenotypes and function. The aim of this communication is to evaluate the mitochondrial status and plasticity of four fish cell lines: SAF-1 (derived from gilthead sea bream skin), DLB-1 (derived from European sea bass brain), FuB-1 (established from mummichog brain), and PLHC-1 (a topminnow hepatocellular carcinoma). A mitochondrial stress assay was performed to compare the bioenergetic capabilities of these four fish cell lines as well as the importance of choosing the correct cell line when performing different in vitro studies. Abstract

[EN] Rethinking the classics for thinking the future. This could be the compendium of the present article, in which we propose a revision of the immediate future of education based on the classic project of the Trivium. We will analyze, first, the transformation of education in the perspective of smart education, determined by the impact of technology and by the reflection on the competences of the 21st century; secondly, we will review the strategic and methodological proposals in accordance with this transformation, based on the theory of generative learning; thirdly, from the point of view of contents, we will analyse the impor- tance of core digital skills as programming and computational thinking. On this basis, the paper offers a proposal from a dual perspective. Firstly, by rethinking the main issues of education in the light of the history of the Trivium and the epistemological principles that shaped it. Secondly, by proposing the recovery of the Trivium disciplines (Grammar, Rhetoric and Logic) having in mind the debate on the competences of the 21st century, as the best instrument to enrich the current educational systems, especially in view of the challenges of digitalization.

26. Retrofitting of an industrial chemical scrubber into a biotrickling filter: performance at a gas contact time below 1 s

Abstract

The present work provides a description and an assessment of the conversion of an odor-treating industrial chemical scrubber into a biotrickling filter and of its startup and operation during 5 months at an empty bed residence time of about 0.9 s. The system treats a gas flow rate of around 50,000 [m.sup.3]/h, with average concentrations of volatile organic compounds, N[H.sub.3] and [H.sub.2]S, of around 10, 2, and < 1 ppmv, respectively. The main actions undertaken during the conversion were the substitution of the recirculation pump and of the packing material and the modification of the makeup water and purge flow controls. Afterwards, the reactor was inoculated with sludge obtained from a waste water treatment facility, and immediately started up as a biotrickling filter. No significant operation issues were observed during the operation period, other than pH variations and a slight increase in pressure drop, proving that the biotrickling filter is a highly robust system. Relatively low removal efficiencies around 10 and 25% were found, for the volatile organic compounds and N[H.sub.3], respectively. However, due to the low empty bed residence time, these corresponded to notable elimination capacities of around 18 g C/[m.sup.3]h and 3 g N/[m.sup.3] h. No nutrients were supplied to the bioreactor during the first 5 months of operation other than those contained in the sludge employed as inoculum. Abstract

A systematic comparison framework for selecting the best retrofitting alternative for a water resource recovery facility (WRRF) is proposed in this work. The procedure is applied comparing different possible plant configurations to retrofit an existent anoxic/oxic (A/O) WRRF (Manresa, Spain) aiming to include enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The framework for comparison was built on system analysis using a calibrated IWA ASM2d model. A multicriteria set of performance variables, as the operational and capital expenditures (OPEX and CAPEX, respectively) and robustness tests for measuring how fast the plant configuration refuses external disturbances (like ammonium and phosphate peak loads), were used for comparison. Starting from the existent WRRF, four plant configurations were tested: single A2/O (only one anoxic reactor converted to anaerobic), double A2/O (two anoxic reactors converted to anaerobic), BARDENPHO, and UCT. The double A2/O plant configuration was the most economical and reliable alternative for improving the existent Manresa WRRF capacity and implementing EBPR, since the effluent quality increased 3.8% compared to the current plant configuration. In addition, the double A2/O CAPEX was close to €165,000 which was at the same order of the single A2/O and lower than the BARDENPHO and UCT alternatives. Practitioner points: Four configurations including EBPR were evaluated for retrofitting an A/O WRRF.A new multicriteria comparison framework was used to select the best configuration.Up to 13 criteria related to effluent quality, robustness and costs were included.A single function based on the combination of all the criteria was also evaluated.
