The variability of La Guajira upwelling system, in the south-central Caribbean Sea, is strongly influenced by the intensity and location of the atmospheric Caribbean Low-Level Jet (CLLJ), a near-surface branch of the easterlies, as well as by the regional ocean circulation. During favorable conditions (i.e., strong easterlies blowing almost parallel to the coast), upwelling is enhanced and a large amount of primary productivity occurs in La Guajira area. In contrast, during relatively mild wind conditions, the CLLJ is misaligned to the coast and the Caribbean Counter Current (CCC, locally also known as the Darien Current), which forms as a branch from the Panama-Colombia Gyre, flows northeastward over the continental shelf advecting waters from the southwestern Caribbean basin toward La Guajira. The CCC has a clear signature at the surface layer that extends from the Darien Gulf toward La Guajira peninsula during mild wind periods, while disappears during the months of strong winds. The direction and the magnitude of the easterlies, and more specifically of the CLLJ, control the position and pathway of the CCC, which extends more than 900 km in the southern Caribbean Sea during May, June, August, September, and October. This study analyses the physical mechanisms that impact Lagrangian pathways and transport in the southern Benguela upwelling system (SBUS), an environment in which currents are key components of many important ecological processes, including the dispersal of marine larvae. Physical advection by currents is an important mechanism for egg and larvae transport success in the SBUS since the spawning areas and recruitment areas are separated by a long distance. Numerical model simulations of the SBUS coupled with particle tracking experiments are used to investigate Lagrangian pathways between the Cape Peninsula (34°S) and St Helena Bay (32°S) and how they are linked to the oceanic circulation. Transport success, given by the ratio of the number of particles that reach St Helena Bay over the total number of particles released, is used quantify the alongshore connectivity between the two regions. We have identified and quantified the following physical drivers: (i) Benguela Jet, (ii) offshore Ekman transport, (iii) inner shelf poleward current, (iv) mesoscale eddies to be responsible for the spatial and temporal variability of the alongshore connectivity. The Benguela Jet was found to be the dominant driver of the connectivity at both seasonal and interannual timescales. Moreover, the presence of anti-cyclonic eddies near the shelf-edge negatively impact transport success by advecting particles into the open ocean. The opposite occurs with shelf-edge eddies as they transport particles onshore onto the shelf and the Benguela Jet. These findings will provide a valuable information for the future studies on the role of the physical drivers that impact transport of larvae and eggs., Cette étude a pour cadre le système d'upwelling côtier du Benguela sud (SUBS) dans lequel l'advection par les courants marins influe sur de nombreux processus biologiques. Le rôle de ces courants est exacerbé par la séparation géographique existant entre les zones de ponte et de nurserie de plusieurs populations de poissons marins. Des simulations numériques basées sur un modèle hydrodynamique du SUBS sont exploitées à l'aide d'outils lagrangiens pour identifier les trajectoires suivies par des particules entre la péninsule du Cap (34°S) et la baie de Sainte-Hélène (32°S) et pour explorer les liens entre ces trajectoires et la circulation océanique. Le rapport entre le nombre de particules atteignant la baie de Sainte-Hélène et le nombre total de particules relâchées est utilisé pour quantifier la connectivité entre les deux régions. Plusieurs processus physiques importants sont identifiés : (i) le Benguela jet, (ii) le transport d'Ekman vers le large, (iii) le courant s'écoulant vers le sud dans la bordure littorale et (iv) les tourbillons à mésoéchelle. Le Benguela jet est le mécanisme dominant la connectivité aux échelles de temps saisonnières et interannuelles. Le rôle contrasté des tourbillons océaniques suivant leur localisation et leurs caractéristiques a également été documenté. L'identification de ces processus physiques et la quantification de leurs impacts sur la connectivité entre les zones de ponte et de nurserie dans le SUBS sont des résultats qui vont indéniablement contribuer dans de futurs travaux à cerner le rôle des processus d'advection sur la survie larvaire et sur la dynamique des populations marines dans cet écosystème.

The Lagrangian and Eulerian structure and dynamics of a strong wind event in the Tokar Gap region are described using a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model hindcast for 2008. Winds in the Tokar Gap reach 25 m s&minus, 1 and remain coherent as a jet far out over the Red Sea, whereas equally strong wind jets occurring in neighboring gaps are attenuated abruptly by jump-like hydraulic transitions that occur just offshore of the Sudan coast. The transition is made possible by the supercritical nature of the jets, which are fed by air that spills down from passes at relatively high elevation. By contrast, the spilling flow in the ravine-like Tokar Gap does not become substantially supercritical and therefore does not undergo a jump, and also carries more total horizontal momentum. The Tokar Wind Jet carries some air parcels across the Red Sea and into Saudi Arabia, whereas air parcel trajectories in the neighboring jets ascend as they cross through the jumps, then veer sharply to the southeast and do not cross the Red Sea. The mountain parameter Nh/U is estimated to lie in the range of 1.0&ndash, 4.0 for the general region, a result roughly consistent with a gap jet having a long extension, and supercritical flows spilling down from higher elevation passes. The strong event is marked by the formation of a feature with a vertical cellular structure in the upstream entrance region of the Tokar Gap, a feature absent from the more moderate events that occur throughout the summer. The cell contains descending air parcels that are fed into the Tokar Gap and one of the neighboring gaps. An analysis of the Bernoulli function along air parcel trajectories reveals an approximate balance between the loss of potential energy and gain of internal energy and pressure, with surprisingly little contribution from kinetic energy, along the path of the descending flow. The winds in all gaps attain the critical wind speed nominally required to loft dust into the atmosphere, though only the Tokar Gap has a broad, silty delta region capable of supplying particulate matter for dust storms.

The effect of ocean currents on fish eggs and larvae during their journey from spawning to nursery grounds in the Southern Benguela upwelling system is poorly understood. The survival and successful transport of fish eggs and larvae results from complex biological and physical processes. This study focuses on the advective processes, more specifically on how the dynamics and characteristics of the ocean currents shape the Lagrangian pathways in the Southern Benguela. A mesoscale eddy resolving interannual (1989-2010) simulation of the region, with a horizontal resolution of 7.5 km, is used to study processes impacting the connectivity between the western edge of the Agulhas Bank and the west coast upwelling region. A set of Lagrangian experiments are conducted with particles being released within the top 100 m of the water column along an across-shore transect off Cape Point (34 degrees S). Transport success is given by the ratio of the number of particles that reach St Helena Bay (32 degrees S) over the total number of particles released. The model results show a strong seasonal cycle in transport success which is governed by the complex three-dimensional structure of the along-shore jets, their variability, together with the wind-induced Ekman drift. Transport success is most efficient in spring when the Benguela Jet consists of one coherent intensified single-core branch that flows over the 300 m isobath, and when wind-induced Ekman transport favours the retention of particles within the jet. At this time of the year, the pathway leading to successful transport is located inshore, with 90% of particles released inshore the 300 m isobath being successfully transported to St Helena Bay in < 15 days. This pathway is also characterized by low eddy kinetic energy values. During the upwelling season (December March), transport success becomes less efficient, and less sensitive to the initial across-shore position of the particles. The inshore route no longer dominates, as the majority of particles follow offshore pathways. The Benguela Jet shifts offshore and splits into several branches due to the shoaling of the poleward undercurrent. The entrainment of particles within the offshore branch of the jet is favored by the dominating offshore wind-induced Ekman transport. Particles trapped in the offshore branch get exposed to higher mesoscale variability. Their northward progression is slower, which leads to journeys generally exceeding 20 days. This study shows that successful transport from the Agulhas Bank to the west coast upwelling region cannot be attributed to only a simple wind induced modulation of the jet. It explores how the seasonal modulation of the Benguela Jet, poleward undercurrent and offshore Ekman transport combine together with the turbulent off shelf eddy field to set-up the characteristics of transport success.

The water mass pathways to the North Atlantic Oxygen Minimum Zone (naOMZ) are traditionally sketched within the cyclonic tropical circulation via the poleward branching from the eastward flowing jets that lie south of 10°N. However, our water mass analysis of historic hydrographic observations together with numerical Lagrangian experiments consistently reveal that the potential density level of σθ=26.8 kg m-3 (σ26.8, approximately 300 m depth) separates two distinct regimes of circulation within the Central Water (CW) stratum of the naOMZ. In the upper CW (above σ26.8), and in agreement with previous studies, the supply of water mainly comes from the south with a predominant contribution of South Atlantic CW. In the lower CW (below σ26.8), where minimal oxygen content is found, the tropical pathway is instead drastically weakened in favor of a subtropical pathway. More than two thirds of the total water supply to this lower layer takes place north of 10°N, mainly via an eastward flow at 14°N and northern recirculations from the northern subtropical gyre. The existence of these northern jets explains the greater contribution of North Atlantic CW observed in the lower CW, making up to 50% of the water mass at the naOMZ core. The equatorward transfer of mass from the well-ventilated northern subtropical gyre emerges as an essential part of the ventilation of the naOMZ.

The Leeuwin Current is the dominant circulation feature in the eastern Indian Ocean, transporting tropical and subtropical water southward. While it is known that the Leeuwin Current draws its water from a multitude of sources, existing Indian Ocean circulation schematics have never quantified the fluxes of tropical and subtropical source water flowing into the Leeuwin Current. This paper uses virtual Lagrangian particles to quantify the transport of these sources along the Leeuwin Current's mean pathway. Here the pathways and exchange of Leeuwin Current source waters across six coastally bound sectors on the south-west Australian coast are analyzed. This constitutes the first quantitative assessment of Leeuwin Current pathways within an offline, 50 year integration time, eddy-resolving global ocean model simulation. Along the Leeuwin Current's pathway, we find a mean poleward transport of 3.7 Sv in which the tropical sources account for 60-78% of the transport. While the net transport is small, we see large transports flowing in and out of all the offshore boundaries of the Leeuwin Current sectors. Along the Leeuwin Current's pathway, we find that water from the Indonesian Throughflow contributes 50-66% of the seasonal signal. By applying conditions on the routes particles take entering the Leeuwin Current, we find particles are more likely to travel offshore north of 30°S, while south of 30°S, particles are more likely to continue downstream. We find a 0.2 Sv pathway of water from the Leeuwin Current's source regions, flowing through the entire Leeuwin Current pathway into the Great Australian Bight.
