Abstract Background To explore the relationship between the lymph node status and preoperative computed tomography images texture features in pancreatic cancer. Methods A total of 155 operable pancreatic cancer patients (104 men, 51 women; mean age 63.8 ± 9.6 years), who had undergone contrast-enhanced computed tomography in the arterial and portal venous phases, were enrolled in this retrospective study. There were 73 patients with lymph node metastases and 82 patients without nodal involvement. Four different data sets, with thin (1.25 mm) and thick (5 mm) slices (at arterial phase and portal venous phase) were analysed. Texture analysis was performed by using MaZda software. A combination of feature selection algorithms was used to determine 30 texture features with the optimal discriminative performance for differentiation between lymph node positive and negative groups. The prediction performance of the selected feature was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results There were 10 texture features with significant differences between two groups and significance in ROC analysis were identified. They were WavEnLH_s-2(wavelet energy with rows and columns are filtered with low pass and high pass frequency bands with scale factors 2) from wavelet-based features, 135dr_LngREmph (long run emphasis in 135 direction) and 135dr_Fraction (fraction of image in runs in 135 direction) from run length matrix-based features, and seven variables of sum average from coocurrence matrix-based features (SumAverg). The ideal cutoff value for predicting lymph node metastases was 270 for WavEnLH_s-2 (positive likelihood ratio 2.08). In addition, 135dr_LngREmph and 135dr_Fraction were correlated with the ratio of metastatic to examined lymph nodes. Conclusions Preoperative computed tomography high order texture features provide a useful imaging signature for the prediction of nodal involvement in pancreatic cancer.

The impact of transgenic crops on non-target organisms is a key aspect of environmental safety assessment to transgenic crops. In the present study, we fed two snail species, Bradybaena (Acusta) ravida (B. ravida) and Bradybaena similaris (Ferussac)(B. similaris), with the leaves of transgenic Bt cotton Zhong 30 (Z30) and control cotton, its parent line zhong 16 (Z16), to assess the environmental safety of Bt cotton to common non-target organisms in the field. Survival, body weight, shell diameter, helix number, reproduction rate, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and Bt protein concentration in snails were monitored in 15 days and 180 days experiments. We also monitored the population dynamics of B. ravida and B. similaris in Z30 and Z16 cotton fields for two successive years. Compared to the snails fed on the control cotton Z16, there was no significant difference in survival, growth, reproduction, and SOD activity on Bt cotton Z30. Bt protein concentrations were significantly between different treatments, and Bt protein residues were only detected in the feces of the Z30 treatment. According to the field data, the number of B. ravida and B. similaris fluctuated considerably across seasons over the entire cotton-growing season; however, there were no significant differences between the Bt and control cotton fields at similar time. As the results showed, in our experiments, Bt cotton Z30 had no adverse effects on the two snail species, both in the laboratory and in the fields.

Periodontal disease (PD), as an age-related disease, prevalent in middle-aged and elderly population, is characterized as inflammatory periodontal tissue loss, including gingival inflammation and alveolar bone resorption. However, the definite mechanism of aging-related inflammation in PD pathology needs further investigation. Our study is aimed at exploring the effect of inflamm-aging-related cytokines of interleukin-17 (IL-17) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) on osteoclastogenesis in vitro and periodontal destruction in vivo. For receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand- (RANKL-) primed bone marrow macrophages (BMMs), IL-17 and IFN-γ enhanced osteoclastogenesis, with the expression of osteoclastogenic mRNA (TRAP, c-Fos, MMP-9, Ctsk, and NFATc1) and protein (c-Fos and MMP-9) upregulated. Ligament-induced rat models were established to investigate the role of IL-17 and IFN-γ on experimental periodontitis. Both IL-17 and IFN-γ could enhance the local inflammation in gingival tissues. Although there might be an antagonistic interaction between IL-17 and IFN-γ, IL-17 and IFN-γ could facilitate alveolar bone loss and osteoclast differentiation.

The rapid development of 5G network technology has gained much popularity as well as concerns about its adverse effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of 4.9 GHz (one of working frequencies of 5G communication) radiofrequency (RF) field on emotional behaviours and spatial memory in adult male mice. Open field test (OFT), tail suspension test (TST) and Y maze were used to evaluate anxiety, depression-like behaviour and spatial memory ability, respectively. It was found that the anxiety-like behaviour and spatial memory ability of mice did not change, but the depression-like behaviour was induced in mice after 4.9 GHz RF exposure. In addition, the number of neurons significantly reduced and the level of pyroptosis obviously increased in amygdala rather than hippocampus. These results suggested that 4.9 GHz RF exposure could induce depression-like behaviour, which might be associated with the neuronal pyroptosis in amygdala. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In developing sensory systems, elaborate morphological connectivity between peripheral cells and first-order central neurons emerges via genetic programming before the onset of sensory activities. However, how the first-order central neurons acquire the capacity to interface with peripheral cells remains elusive. By making patch-clamp recordings from mouse brainstem slices, we found that a subset of neurons in the cochlear nuclei, the first central station to receive peripheral acoustic impulses, exhibits spontaneous firings (SFs) as early as at birth, and the fraction of such neurons increases during the prehearing period. SFs are reduced but not eliminated by a cocktail of blockers for excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs, implicating the involvement of intrinsic pacemaker channels. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these intrinsic firings (IFs) are largely driven by hyperpolarization- and cyclic nucleotide-gated channel (HCN) mediated currents (Ih), as evidenced by their attenuation in the presence of HCN blockers or in neurons from HCN1 knockout mice. Interestingly, genetic deletion of HCN1 cannot be fully compensated by other pacemaker conductances and precludes age-dependent up regulation in the fraction of spontaneous active neurons and their firing rate. Surprisingly, neurons with SFs show accelerated development in excitability, spike waveform and firing pattern as well as synaptic pruning towards mature phenotypes compared to those without SFs. Our results imply that SFs of the first-order central neurons may reciprocally promote their wiring and firing with peripheral inputs, potentially enabling the correlated activity and crosstalk between the developing brain and external environment.

Fructose-1, 6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBA) is a key plant enzyme that is involved in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and the Calvin cycle. It plays significant roles in biotic and abiotic stress responses, as well as in regulating growth and development processes. In the present paper, 21 genes encoding TaFBA isoenzymes were identified, characterized, and categorized into three groups: class I chloroplast/plastid FBA (CpFBA), class I cytosol FBA (cFBA), and class II chloroplast/plastid FBA. By using a prediction online database and genomic PCR analysis of Chinese Spring nulli-tetrasomic lines, we have confirmed the chromosomal location of these genes in 12 chromosomes of four homologous groups. Sequence and genomic structure analysis revealed the high identity of the allelic TaFBA genes and the origin of different TaFBA genes. Numerous putative environment stimulus-responsive cis-elements have been identified in 1,500-bp regions of TaFBA gene promoters, of which the most abundant are the light-regulated elements (LREs). Phylogenetic reconstruction using the deduced protein sequence of 245 FBA genes indicated an independent evolutionary pathway for the class I and class II groups. Although, earlier studies have indicated that class II FBA only occurs in prokaryote and fungi, our results have demonstrated that a few class II CpFBAs exist in wheat and other closely related species. Class I TaFBA was predicted to be tetramers and class II to be dimers. Gene expression analysis based on microarray and transcriptome databases suggested the distinct role of TaFBAs in different tissues and developmental stages. The TaFBA 4–9 genes were highly expressed in leaves and might play important roles in wheat development. The differential expression patterns of the TaFBA genes in light/dark and a few abiotic stress conditions were also analyzed. The results suggested that LRE cis-elements of TaFBA gene promoters were not directly related to light responses. Most TaFBA genes had higher expression levels in the roots than in the shoots when under various stresses. Class I cytosol TaFBA genes, particularly TaFBA10/12/18 and TaFBA13/16, and three class II TaFBA genes are involved in responses to various abiotic stresses. Class I CpFBA genes in wheat are apparently sensitive to different stress conditions.

Hybrid necrosis is the gradual premature death of leaves or plants in certain F1 hybrids of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Comparison of protein expression in necrotic and normal wheat leaves showed that the abundance of 33 proteins was changed significantly, and 24 of these proteins were identified. These proteins were involved in plant growth and development, antioxidation, photosynthesis and carbon assimilation, amino acid and protein biosynthesis, cytological signal transduction, DNA and RNA modification, protein transport, folding and assembly according to their functions. The down-regulation of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase and the up-regulation of lipoxygenases in necrotic leaves may be related to the oxidative stress in the necrotic cells. The heat shock proteins may play the cytoprotective role. The differential expression of photosynthesis and carbon assimilation related proteins indicated chlorophyll biosynthesis and chloroplast development were inhibited and might finally cause the gradual chlorosis and cell death in necrotic leaves. The results of this study give a comprehensive picture of the post-transcriptional response to necrosis in hybrid wheat leaves and serve as a platform for further characterization of gene function and regulation in wheat hybrid necrosis.

5.8 GHz spectrum is gaining more attention in wireless technology. To explore the potential hazards, we investigated the effect of exposure to 5.8 GHz microwave on learning and memory ability of rats. Methods: Morris Water maze (MWM), Novel object recognition (NOR) and Fear conditioning test (FCT) were used to evaluate the ability of spatial and non-spatial memory of rats. The hippocampal morphology, the level of brain injury factors in serum and the mitochondrial membrane potential of hippocampal neurons was examined to evaluate the damage of hippocampal neurons. The density of dendritic spines, the ultrastructure of synapses and the level of PSD95, Synaptophysin, p-CREB and CREB were detected to evaluate the hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Compared with Sham group, there was no significant difference in the performance of ethology (in MWM, NOR, FCT) in Microwave 2 h group or Microwave 4 h group. The hippocampal morphology, the serum level of brain injury factors and the content of mitochondrial JC-1 monomer in Microwave 2 h group or Microwave 4 h group did not change obviously, compared with Sham group. The density of dendritic spines, the ultrastructure of synapse and the level of PSD95, Synaptophysin, p-CREB and CREB in hippocampus in Microwave 2 h group or Microwave 4 h group did not significantly change, compared with Sham group. Under this experimental condition, exposure to 5.8 GHz microwave could not affect the hippocampal synaptic plasticity of rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anomaly detection is one of the most important applications in video surveillance that involves the temporal localisation of anomaly events in unannotated video sequences. By learning the normal patterns to generate frames and calculating their reconstruction error relative to the ground truth, a frame can be recognised as being abnormal if the reconstruction error exceeds a threshold. Most existing works use a fixed threshold that computes over all the testing data to determine the anomalies. However, fixed threshold strategy cannot address the challenges brought by the dynamic environment, e.g. changes in illumination conditions. In this paper, a dynamic thresholding algorithm (DTA) is proposed, which is fully data‐driven and capable of automatically determining thresholds such that the developed anomaly detection system can flexibly adapt to different scenarios. The proposed DTA is independent of the backbone network and can be easily incorporated into most existing video anomaly detection models to help identify the appropriate thresholds. On both synthetic and real‐world datasets, the experimental results show that with the proposed DTA, the video anomaly detection methods achieve a better performance considering the changes in dynamic environment. To clarify the preventive and therapeutic effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on brain injury induced by X-ray cranial irradiation, preliminarily identify the mechanism and provide a novel clinical approach for the prevention and treatment of radiation-induced brain injury (RBI). Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into the sham group, large fractionated dose (5 Gy × 4 d) group, large fractionated dose + rTMS (5 Gy × 4 d + rTMS) group, conventional fractionated dose (2 Gy × 10 d) group and conventional fractionated dose + rTMS (2 Gy × 10 d + rTMS) group. After cranial irradiation and rTMS, behavioral experiments, morphological staining and molecular biology experiments were performed. We further determined the mechanism of rTMS on the prevention and treatment of RBI, including changes in hippocampal neuronal apoptosis, neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation and differentiation, and neuronal synaptic plasticity. rTMS alleviated the negative effects of cranial radiation on the general health of mice and promoted their recovery. rTMS ameliorated the impairment of spatial learning and memory induced by cranial radiation, and this beneficial effect was more robust in the conventional fractionated dose group than the large fractionated dose group. Moreover, rTMS alleviated the alterations in hippocampal structure and neuronal death and had preventive and therapeutic effects against RBI. In addition, rTMS reduced hippocampal cell apoptosis, promoted NSC proliferation and differentiation in the hippocampus after cranial irradiation, and enhanced neuronal synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. Subsequent studies showed that rTMS upregulated the expression of learning- and memory-related proteins. rTMS could alleviate learning and memory impairment caused by RBI, and the preventive and therapeutic effects of rTMS were better for the conventional fraction radiation paradigms. Achieving high performance in many multi-server systems (e.g., web hosting center, cloud) requires finding a good assignment of worker threads to servers and also effectively allocating each server’s resources to its assigned threads. The assignment and allocation components of this problem have been studied extensively but largely separately in the literature. In this paper, we introduce the assign and allocate (AA) problem, which seeks to simultaneously find an assignment and allocation that maximizes the total utility of the threads. Assigning and allocating the threads together can result in substantially better overall utility than performing the steps separately, as is traditionally done. We model each thread by a utility function giving its performance as a function of its assigned resources. We first prove that the AA problem is NP-hard. We then present a $2 (\sqrt {2}-1) > 0.828$ factor approximation algorithm for concave utility functions, which runs in $O(mn^{2} + n (\log mC)^{2})$ time for $n$ threads and $m$ servers with $C$ amount of resources each. We also give a faster algorithm with the same approximation ratio and $O(n (\log mC)^{2})$ time complexity. We then extend the problem to two more general settings. First, we consider threads with nonconcave utility functions, and give a 1/2 factor approximation algorithm. Next, we give an algorithm for threads using multiple types of resources, and show the algorithm achieves good empirical performance. We conduct extensive experiments to test the performance of our algorithms on threads with both synthetic and realistic utility functions, and find that they achieve over 92% of the optimal utility on average. We also compare our algorithms with a number of practical heuristics, and find that our algorithms achieve up to 9 times higher total utility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate whether the abscopal effects of cranial irradiation (C-irradiation) cause testicular damage in mice, male C57BL/6 mice (9weeks of age) were randomly divided into a sham irradiation group, a shielded group and a C-irradiation group and administered sham/shielded irradiation or C-irradiation at a dose rate of 2.33Gy/min (5Gy/d for 4 d consecutively). All mice were sacrificed at 4weeks after C-irradiation. We calculated the testis index, observed testicular histology by haematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and observed testicular ultrastructure by transmission electron microscopy. Western blotting was used to determine the protein levels of Bax, Bcl-2, Cleaved caspase 3, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and stem cell factor (SCF) in the testes of mice. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to detect the expression of Cleaved caspase 3 and 3β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3βHSD), and a TUNEL assay was used to confirm the location of apoptotic cells. The levels of testosterone (T), GDNF and SCF were measured by ELISA. We also evaluated the sperm quality in the cauda epididymides by measuring the sperm count, abnormality, survival rate and apoptosis rate. The results showed that there was no significant difference in testicular histology, ultrastructure or sperm quality between the shielded group and sham group. Compared with the sham/shielded group, the C-irradiation group exhibited a lower testis index and severely damaged testicular histology and ultrastructure at 4weeks after C-irradiation. The levels of apoptosis in the testes increased markedly in the C-irradiation group, especially in spermatogonial stem cells. The levels of serum T and testicular 3βHSD did not obviously differ between the sham group and the C-irradiation group, but the levels of GDNF and SCF in the testes increased in the C-irradiation group, compared with the sham group. In addition, the sperm count and survival rate decreased in the C-irradiation group, while the abnormality and apoptosis rate increased. Under these experimental conditions, the abscopal effects of C-irradiation induced testicular damage with regard to both structure and function and ultimately decreased sperm quality in mice. The recent protest in Hong Kong since summer 2019 makes political forgiveness an urgent public issue facing the Christian churches. Through a contextual and multidisciplinary dialogue with Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971), this study argues for a realistic understanding that political forgiveness is possible as well as desirable, which should be based on a dialectical view of human nature, rather than a naïve and optimistic view of human compassion. This essay argues that the Protestant theological heritage is ambivalent regarding its potentialities for ecological theology in terms of its "letter" or doctrinal formula, including particularly its anthropocentric soteriology. Here three areas are analyzed: (1) the prevalent evaluations of the Protestant ecological heritage in the Western context; (2) Chinese perceptions of the Christian heritage; and (3) Chinese Protestant discourses on ecology. However, despite its ambivalence, the Protestant spirit of continuing reform is valuable for the formulation of Christian ecological ethics in the contemporary world, including the Chinese context. By reviewing the Chinese theological publications in the twentieth century, especially during the 1920s–1930s and after the 1980s, this article aims to show that it is not a zero-sum game between the translation of western theological works into Chinese and the publication of original Chinese theological works. The selection of the western works for translation exhibited a certain creativity from the Chinese side, and in turn, the translated works also inspired original Chinese theological works. In the twenty-first century, the Chinese studies of Christianity developed rapidly. Many Chinese Christian theologians published pro-actively in western languages. Due to the recognition of the importance of Christianity in contemporary China and the awareness of the global context for Christian theology, there was a growing interest among western theologians in non-western Christian theology, including Chinese Christian theology. The author presents a personal narrative of his experiences of published his doctoral dissertation on Paul Tillich and religious pluralism.

In spite of the small number of Orthodox Christians in China, Chinese publications relating to Orthodox Christianity, in which many Chinese theologians from other Christian denominations or scholars without formal religious affiliation have been involved in exploring Orthodox theology, have mushroomed in recent years. It is noticeable that these explorations have been shaped not only by the renaissance of Orthodox theology in the twentieth century, but also by the Chinese context. In terms of scope, many of them are related to the Chinese context, including the relationship between Christianity and Chinese culture. In terms of depth, due to the religious backgrounds of the researchers, some of these Chinese explorations fail to integrate the theological, liturgical and spiritual dimensions of the Orthodox tradition, and exhibit difficulties in interpreting, for instance, Orthodox mystical theology. A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with an organic nanocomposite electret thin film as the triboelectric layer for mechanical energy harvesting was investigated systematically. In combination with corona charging, a TENG was fabricated by using embedded-nanocapacitor-structure polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) impregnated with gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs). The output performances, stability, and durability of the TENGs with Au-PTFE nanocomposite films were characterized after being washed in water. It was found that the output current increases by 70% and the equivalent surface charge density (ESCD) reaches 85 μC/m2 in comparison to the virgin PTFE film. Such outstanding performance is likely due to the equivalent nanocapacitors between the Au-NPs and PTFE molecules, which serve as nano charge traps in the nanocomposite electret film under negative high-voltage corona charging. Drought, salinity, and freezing are three major abiotic stresses that adversely affect plant growth and crop yield. Previous reports have demonstrated that the overexpression of the betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH) gene can improve the tolerance of plants to osmotic and salinity stresses. In the present study, a novel and atypical BADH gene, HvBADH1 , was transferred into Cichorium intybus by an Agrobacterium tumefaciens -mediated method. The integration and expression of HvBADH1 in the transformants were confirmed by PCR, Southern blot, and RT-PCR analysis. The stress tolerance traits of the transgenic plants were investigated by evaluating the phenotype of the transformed and wild-type (WT) plants, by measuring seven physiological indicators associated with stress resistance in plants, such as the K + and Na + contents, K + /Na + ratio, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, chlorophyll content, the content of glycine betaine (GB), and relative conductivity in the leaves of the plants. The results revealed that the transgenic tissues had a better K + retention ability, a reduced sensitivity to stress-induced hydroxyl radical production, an enhanced protection of the photosynthetic system, 4.92–6.95-fold greater amount of GB, and a higher growth rate compared with the WT plant. Accordingly, we concluded that the overexpression of HvBADH1 not only enhanced the salt tolerance of transgenic Cichorium intybus , but also reduced the cellular membrane damage caused by the salinity stress. The article attempts to examine the theology of John B. Cobb Jr. and to demonstrate that his approach to Buddhism-Christian dialogue is closely related to his concern for social justice. It argues that Cobb's theology, including his understanding of salvation and his transformist approach to theology can be understood as a creative transformation of the Wesleyan theological tradition. It concludes that inter-religious dialogue oriented to social justice may help Christians in East Asia to develop a more mature approach to their own religious traditions.

After reviewing some recent developments in cultural studies and Christian theology respectively and exploring the theology of Paul Tillich (1886-1965), especially its relationship with the Frankfurt school, existentialism, and psychoanalysis, this paper will attempt to demonstrate that Tillich's theology may offer a theological perspective for the theological appropriation of cultural studies as an academic discipline. Based on this perspective, there can be mutually beneficial interaction between Christian theology and cultural studies. The article features the distinctive interpretation of Baptist missionary Timothy Richard on Chinese Buddhism. He claimed that the Mahāyāna Buddhism that expanded in China was a wider level of Buddhism and similar to Christianity as living religion. His appreciation of Mahāyāna Buddhism was developed by his Christian beliefs and his missionary zeal.

Wheat hybrid necrosis has been genetically characterised for many years, but the specific gene(s) and the protein products involved in the processes remains unknown. In this study, protein expression in the base (B), mid (M) and tip (T) segments of the FL-2 leaves of a necrotic hybrid, PZF1 and its parents, Pan555 and Zheng891, was analysed and compared using a high throughput proteomic approach. Twenty-three protein spots, with significant variations in intensity across the necrotic leaf segments, were analysed by MALDI-TOF-MS, of which, 18 were matched to protein accessions in the NCBI database. Several of these proteins are enzymes involved in the methylation cycle, including AdoHcy hydrolase, AdoMet synthase 3 and methionine synthase 1; AdoHcy hydrolase was downregulated sharply in M and T, and AdoMet synthase 3 and methionine synthase 1 were upregulated gradually from M to T. This result suggests that methylation-associated processes, including epigenetic mechanisms, may play a role in the initiation and development of hybrid necrosis. Several energy cycle-associated proteins and cytoprotective proteins were also differentially expressed across the leaf segments, suggesting their direct association with or possible involvement in the necrotic processes. The significant imbalance of a heat-shock protein, a transposon protein and a RNA- and ssDNA-binding protein also makes these proteins potential molecular components in the necrotic processes. The article presents a profile of the life and work of the Chinese Christian intellectual Xie Fuya, also known as N. Z. Zia. Particular attention is paid to re-evaluating the significance of Xie's work and the criticism directed toward him in the context of fellow diasporic Chinese intellectuals who left China after the outbreak of civil war in 1949. The suggestion that Xie shifted his interest from promoting the "indigenous Church" to "indigenous theology" by combining Christian faith and Confucian thought is analyzed. Xie's political concerns and social participation while in exile in Hong Kong and Taiwan are examined. Criticisms over the feasibility of a Chinese Christian theology as proposed by Xie are assessed.
