Summary: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder characterized by sickled red blood cells (RBCs), which are more sensitive to haemolysis and can contribute to disease pathophysiology. Although treatment of SCD can include RBC transfusion, patients with SCD have high rates of alloimmunization. We hypothesized that RBCs from patients with SCD have functionally active mitochondria and can elicit a type 1 interferon response. We evaluated blood samples from more than 100 patients with SCD and found elevated frequencies of mitochondria in reticulocytes and mature RBCs, as compared to healthy blood donors. The presence of mitochondria in mature RBCs was confirmed by flow cytometry, electron microscopy, and proteomic analysis. The mitochondria in mature RBCs were metabolically competent, as determined by enzymatic activities and elevated levels of mitochondria‐derived metabolites. Metabolically‐active mitochondria in RBCs may increase oxidative stress, which could facilitate and/or exacerbate SCD complications. Coculture of mitochondria‐positive RBCs with neutrophils induced production of type 1 interferons, which are known to increase RBC alloimmunization rates. These data demonstrate that mitochondria retained in mature RBCs are functional and can elicit immune responses, suggesting that inappropriate retention of mitochondria in RBCs may play an underappreciated role in SCD complications and be an RBC alloimmunization risk factor. Background. This study aimed at investigating whether the length of stay (LOS) in the emergency department (ED) is associated with mortality in elderly patients with infections admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Delayed admission to the ICU may be associated with adverse clinical outcomes in elderly patients with infections. Methods. This was a retrospective study conducted with subjects over 65 years of age admitted to the ICU from 5 EDs. We recorded demographic data, clinical findings, initial laboratory results, and ED LOS. Outcomes were all-cause in-hospital mortality and hospital LOS. A multivariable regression model was applied to identify factors predictive of mortality. Results. A total of 439 patients admitted to the ICU via the ED were included in this study, 132 (30.1%) of whom died in the hospital. The median (IQR) age was 78 (73, 83) years. In multivariable analysis, a history of malignancy (OR: 3.76; 95% CI: 1.88–7.52; p < 0.001), high lactate level (OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.01–1.27; p = 0.039), and ED LOS (OR: 1.01; 95% CI: 1.00–1.02; p = 0.039) were independent risk factors for all-cause in-hospital admission. Elderly patients with an ED LOS >12 hours had a longer hospital LOS (p = 0.018), and those with an ED LOS > 24 hours had a longer hospital LOS and higher mortality rate (p = 0.044 , p = 0.008). Conclusions. This study shows that prolonged ED LOS is independently associated with all-cause in-hospital mortality in elderly patients with infections requiring ICU admission. Research papers are a repository of information on the various elements that make up science and technology R&D activities. Generating knowledge maps based on research papers enables identification of specific areas of scientific and technical research as well as understanding of the flow of knowledge between those areas. Recently, as the number of electronic publishing and informatics archives along with the amount of accumulated knowledge related to science and technology has proliferated, the need to utilize the meta-knowledge obtainable from research papers has increased. Therefore, this study devised a model based on meta-knowledge (i.e., text information including citations, abstracts, area codes) for prediction of future growth potential using deep learning algorithms and investigated the applicability of the various forms of meta-knowledge to the prediction of future growth potential. Summary: Background: Although a higher risk of other immune‐mediated diseases has been reported in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, the risk factors of immune‐mediated diseases development and the effect of concomitant immune‐mediated diseases on outcomes remain poorly defined. Aim: To determine the risk factors of incident immune‐mediated diseases and the impact of comorbid immune‐mediated diseases on outcomes in IBD. Methods: Using the National Health Insurance claims data for the entire Korean population, we identified 35 581 IBD patients without immune‐mediated diseases and 595 IBD patients with immune‐mediated diseases from 2012 to 2013, and follow‐up until 2016. We selected four controls by age and sex for comparing with cases. Results: A total of 35 581 IBD patients without immune‐mediated diseases and 142 324 matched controls without immune‐mediated diseases were followed from 2014 to 2016 and of these 239 IBD patients and 357 controls developed immune‐mediated disease. The overall immune‐mediated diseases risk was higher in IBD patients (HR, hazard ratio, 2.47; 95% confidence interval, CI, 2.09‐2.91). In a nested case‐control study of the IBD cohort, adult patients aged ≥20 years and frequent hospitalisation ≥1 per year were independent risk factors for incident immune‐mediated diseases, in contrast, 5‐aminosalicylic acid (5‐ASA) use had protective effect (odds ratio, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.41‐0.90) for developing immune‐mediated diseases. In addition, IBD patients with another immune‐mediated disease had an increased risk of needing anti‐TNF‐α agent (HR, 2.40; 95% CI, 2.02‐2.84) and developing acute flare (HR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.37‐2.26). Conclusions: The incidence of immune‐mediated diseases in IBD patients was higher than that of non‐IBD population. 5‐ASA use may reduce this risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two strains, VM2412T and VR2415T, were isolated from the feces of an Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) living in Seoul Grand Park, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Cells of both strains were observed to be Gram-stain positive, non-motile, aerobic, catalase positive and oxidase negative. Growth was found to occur at 10-30°C, showing optimum growth at 30°C. The strains could tolerate up to 15% (w/v) NaCl concentration and grow at pH 6-9. The strains shared 99.3% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to each other but were identified as two distinct species based on 89.0-89.2% ANIb, 90.3% ANIm, 89.7% OrthoANI and 38.0% dDDH values calculated using whole genome sequences. Among species with validly published names, Brachybacterium ginsengisoli DCY80T shared high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with strains VM2412T (98.7%) and VR2415T (98.4%) and close genetic relatedness with strains VM2412T (83.3–83.5% ANIb, 87.0% ANIm, 84.3% OrthoANI and 27.8% dDDH) and VR2415T (82.8–83.2% ANIb, 86.7% ANIm, 83.9% OrthoANI and 27.2% dDDH). The major fatty acid of the two strains was identified as anteiso-C15:0 and the polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, presumptively phosphatidylethanolamine and three unidentified glycolipids. Strain VR2415T also produced an unidentified phospholipid. The cell walls of the two strains contained meso -diaminopimelic acid as diagnostic diamino acid and the whole cell sugars were ribose, glucose, and galactose. The strains contained MK-7 as their predominant menaquinone. The genomes of strains VM2412T, VR2415T, and B. ginsengisoli DCY80T were sequenced in this study. The genomic G+C contents of strains VM2412T and VR2415T were determined to be 70.8 and 70.4 mol%, respectively. A genome-based phylogenetic tree constructed using an up-to-date bacterial core gene set (UBCG) showed that the strains formed a clade with members of the genus Brachybacterium , supporting their taxonomic classification into the genus Brachybacterium. Based on phenotypic and genotypic analyses in this study, strains VM2412T and VR2415T are considered to represent two novel species of the genus Brachybacterium and the names Brachybacterium vulturis sp. nov. and Brachybacterium avium sp. nov. are proposed for strains VM2412T (=KCTC 39996T = JCM 32142T) and VR2415T (=KCTC 39997T = JCM 32143T), respectively. Fractional charge and statistics are hallmarks of low-dimensional interacting systems such as fractional quantum Hall (QH) systems. Integer QH systems are regarded as noninteracting, yet they can have fractional charge excitations when they couple to another interacting system or time-dependent voltages. Here, we notice Abelian fractional mutual statistics between such a fractional excitation and an electron, and propose a setup for detection of the statistics in which a fractional excitation is generated at a source and injected to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) in the integer QH regime. In a parameter regime, the dominant interference process involves braiding, via double exchange, between an electron excited at an MZI beam splitter and the fractional excitation. The braiding results in the interference phase shift by the phase angle of the mutual statistics. This proposal for directly observing the fractional mutual statistics is within experimental reach.
