Abstract

An absence of measurement bias against distinct groups is a prerequisite for the use of a given psychological instrument in scientific research or high-stakes assessment. Factor analysis is the framework explicitly adopted for the identification of such bias when the instrument consists of a multi-test battery, whereas item response theory is employed when the focus narrows to a single test composed of discrete items. Item response theory can be treated as a mild nonlinearization of the standard factor model, and thus the essential unity of bias detection at the two levels merits greater recognition. Here we illustrate the benefits of a unified approach with a real-data example, which comes from a statewide test of mathematics achievement where examinees diagnosed with dyscalculia were accommodated with calculators. We found that items that can be solved by explicit arithmetical computation became easier for the accommodated examinees, but the quantitative magnitude of this differential item functioning (measurement bias) was small.

Abstract

Here we provide a description of the IRT estimation method known as Normal Ogive Harmonic Analysis Robust Method (NOHARM). Although in some ways this method has been superseded by new computer programs that also adopt a specifically factor-analytic approach, its fundamental principles remain useful in certain applications, which include calculating the residual covariance matrix and rescaling the distribution of the common factor (latent trait). These principles can be applied to parameter estimates obtained by any method.

Abstract

Various WIMP dark matter searches using the full data set of XMASS-I, a single-phase liquid xenon detector, are reported in this paper. Stable XMASS-I data taking accumulated a total live time of 1590.9 days between November 20, 2013 and February 1, 2019 with an analysis threshold of ${\rm 1.0\,keV_{ee}}$. In the latter half of data taking a lower analysis threshold of ${\rm 0.5\,keV_{ee}}$ was also available through a new low threshold trigger. Searching for a WIMP signal in the detector's 97~kg fiducial volume yielded a limit on the WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section of ${\rm 1.4\times 10^{-44}\, cm^{2}}$ for a ${\rm 60\,GeV/c^{2}}$ WIMP at the 90$\%$ confidence level. We also searched for WIMP induced annual modulation signatures in the detector's whole target volume, containing 832~kg of liquid xenon. For nuclear recoils of a ${\rm 8\,GeV/c^{2}}$ WIMP this analysis yielded a 90\% CL cross section limit of ${\rm 2.3\times 10^{-42}\, cm^{2}}$. At a WIMP mass of ${\rm 0.5\, GeV/c^{2}}$ the Migdal effect and Bremsstrahlung signatures were evaluated and lead to 90\% CL cross section limits of ${\rm 1.4\times 10^{-35}\, cm^{2}}$ and ${\rm 1.1\times 10^{-33}\, cm^{2}}$ respectively.

Abstract

A search for the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe was conducted with the liquid-xenon detector XMASS-I using $\rm 327\; kg \times 800.0 \; days$ of the exposure. The pulse shape discrimination based on the scintillation decay time constant which distinguishes $\gamma$-rays including the signal and $\beta$-rays was used to enhance the search sensitivity. No significant signal excess was observed from the energy spectrum fitting with precise background evaluation, and we set a lower limit of the half life of 3.7 $\times$ 10$^{24}$ years at 90$\%$ confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint of the neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe.

Abstract

We propose a novel computer architectural concept of instruction overloading to support block ciphers. Instead of adding new instructions, we extend only the execution of some existing instructions. The proposed method allows a central processing unit core to execute different operations for the same instructions, depending on the address of the data, similar to operator overloading in object-oriented languages. We first present an extension for the AES algorithm, then we demonstrate its enhanced applicability with two further extensions supporting multiple block ciphers and hardware masking. The first extension for AES is also applicable to add/AND-rotate-XOR-based block ciphers such as SIMON. The AES and SIMON encryption speed, on this extended core, is at least doubled and is significantly less affected by memory latency. In addition, the AES encryption code requires only 18% of the memory of the previous software implementation. The second extension can further support various block ciphers defined over GF(28), and the SM4 encryption speed is increased by at least 182%. The third extension provides correlation power analysis (CPA) resistance with a 66.6% area overhead but almost no speed overhead, whereas a typical software anti-CPA AES implementation requires at least hundreds of times the execution time.
