Speaking constitutes one of the main goals of learning a second language (L2). Despite the increasing attention on the role of planning and language transfer in L2 learning, the combined effect of using different languages and pre-task planning on language production remains unclear. This study investigated whether the use of different languages in planning affects speaking performance and whether the effect differs by language proficiency. A total of 84 students in Chinese universities learning English as a foreign language participated in several speaking tasks after planning using their first language (L1) Chinese or L2 English. Findings showed that using L1 in planning results in significantly higher syntactic complexity, accuracy, and fluency in speaking performance than using L2 in planning, while the difference in lexical diversity were not statistically significant. Further analysis shows that for speech accuracy, the facilitative effect of L1 was stronger among low-proficient than high-proficient learners. Findings from this study support the use of L2 learners' entire linguistic repertoire in speaking activities and provides implications on speech production theories as well as translanguaging pedagogies.

This study investigated Chinese parents' experiences of reading English storybooks to their preschool children. While the spread of English as a global language is associated with an increasing emphasis on English education, few studies have examined its impact on the early home literacy practices in non-English speaking countries. With the most English learners in the world, China has an increasing number of parents making an early start for children to learn English. This study followed the tripartite framework of Family Language Policy (FLP) to examine Chinese parents' beliefs, practices and management in early storybook reading activities. In-depth interviews with 20 parents in Guangzhou revealed that parents' English reading practices are language-oriented with utilitarian language ideologies. Parents' reading practices and management were identified with contextual constraints, including non-English speaking environments, parents' inadequate English proficiency and knowledge of selecting English storybooks. Our findings highlight the impact of English globalization on the educational practices in local families with implications for educational practitioners in countries with similar changing sociolinguistic landscapes.

Drought may facilitate the invasion process of invasive plants, mainly because invasive plants can obtain a stronger growth competitiveness than native plants under drought. It is therefore imperative to illuminate the mechanisms underlying the successful invasion of invasive plants under drought, with a particular focus on the differences in the resistance of invasive and native plants to drought. This study aimed to elucidate the differences in the resistance between the invasive plant Amaranthus spinosus L. and the native plant A. tricolor L. to drought under a gradient of drought. The resistance of co-cultivated A. spinosus to drought was significantly higher than that of co-cultivated A. tricolor under light drought. Hence, A. spinosus may obtain a stronger competitive advantage than A. spinosus under co-cultivation conditions when treated with light drought. The resistance of the two plants to drought may be predominantly influenced by their height and biomass. This present study also defines a method for evaluating the stress resistance of a given plant species to stress by calculating the stress resistance index. This present study offers a robust theoretical foundation for determining the stress resistance of a given plant species and the environmental management of A. spinosus under drought. The deposition of nitrogen in soil may be influenced by the presence of different nitrogen components, which may affect the accessibility of soil nitrogen and invasive plant–soil microbe interactions. This, in turn, may alter the success of invasive plants. This study aimed to clarify the influences of the invasive plant Bidens pilosa L. on the physicochemical properties, carbon and nitrogen contents, enzymatic activities, and bacterial communities in soil in comparison to the native plant Pterocypsela laciniata (Houtt.) Shih treated with simulated nitrogen deposition at 5 g nitrogen m−2 yr−1 in four forms (nitrate, ammonium, urea, and mixed nitrogen). Monocultural B. pilosa resulted in a notable increase in soil pH but a substantial decrease in the moisture, electrical conductivity, ammonium content, and the activities of polyphenol oxidase, β-xylosidase, FDA hydrolase, and sucrase in soil in comparison to the control. Co-cultivating B. pilosa and P. laciniata resulted in a notable increase in total soil organic carbon content in comparison to the control. Monocultural B. pilosa resulted in a notable decrease in soil bacterial alpha diversity in comparison to monocultural P. laciniata. Soil FDA hydrolase activity and soil bacterial alpha diversity, especially the indices of Shannon's diversity, Simpson's dominance, and Pielou's evenness, exhibited a notable decline under co-cultivated B. pilosa and P. laciniata treated with nitrate in comparison to those treated with ammonium, urea, and mixed nitrogen. One of the key reasons for the success of invasive plants is the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants. However, atmospheric nitrogen deposition may disrupt the level of available nitrogen in soil and the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants, which may alter the colonization of invasive plants. Thus, there is a pressing necessity to examine the effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components on the functional differences between invasive plants and native plants. However, the progress made thus far in this field is not sufficiently detailed. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of artificially simulated nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components (i.e., nitrate, ammonium, urea, and mixed nitrogen) on the functional differences between the Asteraceae invasive plant Bidens pilosa L. and the Asteraceae native plant Pterocypsela laciniata (Houtt.) Shih. The study was conducted over a four-month period using a pot-competitive co-culture experiment. The growth performance of P. laciniata, in particular with regard to the sunlight capture capacity (55.12% lower), plant supporting capacity (45.92% lower), leaf photosynthetic area (51.24% lower), and plant growth competitiveness (79.92% lower), may be significantly inhibited under co-cultivation condition in comparison to monoculture condition. Bidens pilosa exhibited a more pronounced competitive advantage over P. laciniata, particularly in terms of the sunlight capture capacity (129.43% higher), leaf photosynthetic capacity (40.06% higher), and enzymatic defense capacity under stress to oxidative stress (956.44% higher). The application of artificially simulated nitrogen deposition was found to facilitate the growth performance of monocultural P. laciniata, particularly in terms of the sunlight capture capacity and leaf photosynthetic area. Bidens pilosa exhibited a more pronounced competitive advantage (the average value of the relative dominance index of B. pilosa is ≈ 0.8995) than P. laciniata under artificially simulated nitrogen deposition containing different nitrogen components, especially when treated with ammonium (the relative dominance index of B. pilosa is ≈ 0.9363) and mixed nitrogen (the relative dominance index of B. pilosa is ≈ 0.9328). Consequently, atmospheric nitrogen deposition, especially the increased relative proportion of ammonium in atmospheric nitrogen deposition, may facilitate the colonization of B. pilosa via a stronger competitive advantage. Early detection and subsequent complete surgical resection are among the most efficient methods for treating cancer. However, low detection sensitivity and incomplete tumor resection are two challenging issues. Nanoparticle-based imaging-guided surgery has proven promising for cancer-targeted imaging and subsequent debulking surgery. Particularly, the use of near infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes such as NIR quantum dots (QDs) allows deep penetration and high sensitivity for tumor detection. In this study, NIR-emitting CdTe QDs (maximum fluorescence emission peak at 728 nm) were synthesized with a high quantum yield (QY) of 38%. The tumor-specific QD bioconjugates were obtained by attaching cyclic Arg-Gly-Asp peptide (cRGD) to the surface of synthesized QDs, and then injected into U87 MG tumor-bearing mice via tail veins for tumor-targeted imaging. The tumor and its margins were visualized and distinguished by NIR QD bioconjugates, and tumor resection was successfully accomplished via NIR guidance using a Fluobeam-700 NIR imaging system. Our work indicates that the synthesized tumor-specific NIR QDs hold great promise as a potential fluorescent indicator for intraoperative tumor imaging.

The first section of this article begins by investigating the term "going down to the Western Oceans" (xia xiyang 下西洋), which was used as early as the time of Zheng He. It also discusses the origin of the concepts of the Eastern and Western Oceans. The second section discusses the influx of overseas geographical knowledge into China before the time of Zheng He, especially over two important periods: first, the coming of Indian geographical knowledge along with Buddhism to China from the Wei-Jin period (220-420 ce), and second, the advent of Islamic geographical knowledge during the Mongol-Yuan period (ca. 1206-1368). The third section discusses the contributions of foreign members in Zheng He's fleet, especially fanhuozhang 番火長 (foreign pilot). Through an analysis of the records of three military encounters--the suppression of the pirate Chen Zuyi 陳祖義, the attack on Ceylon, and the battle with pirates on a return journey--we find that the term fanhuozhang appears in all three cases, showing that foreign experts were commonly present in all branches or segments of Zheng He's fleet, and that it must have been their job to navigate in the Indian ocean portion of the journey. Based on these findings, the author suggests that even before the beginning of Ming, Chinese people had developed an understanding of navigation technology and absorbed expertise from other peoples, and that this knowledge formed the technological foundation of Zheng He's long-distance voyages, evident of the fact that China's ancient navigational technology was an open knowledge system. This paper discusses several toponyms in Chinese sources, which may possibly be identified with Armenia. First, Aman country, which can be found in the "History of the Later Han" (compiled 3rd–5th centuries) and in the "Account of the Wei Dynasty" (compiled between 239 and 265), is discussed, and it is suggested that there are reasons for an identification, though doubts remain. Armenia was well known by the Mongols and the "Korean Worldmap", which originates in Chinese geographical scholarship during the Mongol period and depicts possibly even Greater and Lesser Armenia. Another source of that period that mentions Armenia is "Muslim Prescriptions" (Huihui yaofang), which names Armenian materia medica known in China. Finally, two other Chinese geographical texts of the 16th and early 18th century that deal with Armenia and the Caucasus region are discussed. This paper shows that Armenia was described in Chinese texts since at least the Mongol period, and that China had a profound knowledge of the geographical situation in Western Asia. Alginate hydrogels have been widely used as excellent scaffold materials for implantation in biological systems because of their good biocompatibility. However, it is difficult to repair bone defects with these materials because of their poor mechanical properties. The aim of the present study was to fabricate a novel degradable alginate/palygorskite (PAL) composite hydrogel with good mechanical properties and investigate its potential for application in bone defect repair. The modified alginate-based hydrogel with increasing PAL content exhibited better mechanical properties than the original alginate hydrogel. In addition, the resulting composite hydrogel was thoroughly characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). With increasing PAL content, the swelling ratio of the hydrogel increased in PBS (pH = 7.4). In vitro cytocompatibility was evaluated using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) to confirm that the developed composite hydrogel was cytocompatible after 1, 3, and 7 days. All these results suggest that the developed composite hydrogel has great potential for bone tissue engineering applications. JWH133 is a selective agonist of cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2), which exerts dual anti-inflammatory and anti-osteoclastogenic effects. We co-cultured BMSCs with composite hydrogels loaded with JWH133, and analysis of proliferation and osteogenic differentiation indicated that the composite hydrogel loaded with JWH133 may enhance the osteogenic differentiation of rat BMSCs. Furthermore, we found that the composite hydrogel loaded with JWH133 inhibited osteoclast formation and the mRNA expression of osteoclast-specific markers.
