Magnetic flux circulation is a primary mode of energy transfer from the solar wind into the ionosphere and inner magnetosphere. For southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), magnetic flux circulation is described by the Dungey cycle (dayside merging, night side reconnection, and magnetospheric convection), and both the ionosphere and inner magnetosphere receive energy. For dawn-dusk oriented IMF, magnetic flux circulation is not well understood, and the inner magnetosphere does not receive energy. Several models have been suggested for possible reconnection patterns; the general pattern is: dayside merging; reconnection on the dayside or along the dawn/dusk regions; and, return flow on dayside only. These models are consistent with the lack of energy in the inner magnetosphere. We will present evidence that the Dungey cycle does not explain the energy transfer during dawn-dusk oriented IMF. We will also present evidence of how magnetic flux does circulate during dawn-dusk oriented IMF, specifically how the magnetic flux reconnects and circulates back.

The Geospace Magnetospheric Dynamics (GMD) mission is designed to provide very closely spaced, multipoint measurements in the thin current sheets of the magnetosphere to determine the relation between small scale processes and the global dynamics of the magnetosphere. Its trajectory is specifically designed to optimize the time spent in the current layers and to minimize radiation damage to the spacecraft. Observations are concentrated in the region 8 to 40 R(sub E) The mission consists of three phases. After a launch into geostationary transfer orbit the orbits are circularized to probe the region between geostationary orbit and the magnetopause; next the orbit is elongated keeping perigee at the magnetopause while keeping the line of apsides down the tail. Finally, once apogee reaches 40 R(sub E) the inclination is changed so that the orbit will match the profile of the noon-midnight meridian of the magnetosphere. This mission consists of 4 solar electrically propelled vehicles, each with a single NSTAR thruster utilizing 100 kg of Xe to tour the magnetosphere in the course of a 4.4 year mission, the same thrusters that have been successfully tested on the Deep Space-1 mission.

In this study we examine observations made by AMPTE/CCE of energetic ion bursts during seven substorm periods when the satellite was located near the neutral sheet, and CCE observed the disruption cross-tail current in situ. We compare ion observations to analytic calculations of particle acceleration. We find that the acceleration region size, which we assume to be essentially the current disruption region, to be on the order of 1 R(sub E). Events exhibiting weak acceleration had either relatively small acceleration regions (apparently associated with pseudobreakup activity on the ground) or relatively small changes in the local magnetic field (suggesting that the magnitude of the local current disruption region was limited). These results add additional support for the view that the particle bursts observed during turbulent current sheet disruptions are due to inductive acceleration of ions.

Recent simulations of magnetotail reconnection have pointed to a link between plasma flows, dipolarization, and the substorm current wedge. In particular, Hesse and Birn (1991) have proposed that earthward jetting of plasma from the reconnection region transports flux into the near-Earth region. At the inner edge of the plasma sheet this flux piles up, producing a dipolarization of the magnetic field. The vorticity produced by the east-west deflection of the flow at the inner edge of the plasma sheet gives rise to field-aligned currents that have region 1 polarity. Thus in this scenario the earthward flow from the reconnection region produces the dipolarization ad the current wedge in a self-consistent fashion. In this study we examine observations made on April 8, 1985 by the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE)/Ion Release Module (IRM), the geosynchronous satellites 1979-053, 1983-019, and 1984-037, and Syowa station, as well as AE. This event is unique because IRM was located near the neutral sheet in the midnight sector for am extended period of time. Ground data show that there was ongoing activity in the IRM local time sector for several hours, beginning at 1800 UT and reaching a crescendo at 2300 UT. This activity was also accompanied by energetic particle variations, including injections, at geosynchronous orbit in the nighttime sector. Significantly, there were no fast flows at the neutral sheet until the great intensification of activity at 2300 UT. At that time, IRM recorded fast eartheard flow simultaneous with a dipolatization of the magetic field. We conclude that while the aforementioned scenario for the creation of the current wedge encounters serious problems explaining the earlier activity, the observations at 2300 UT are consistent with the scenario of Hesse and Birn (1191). On that basis it is argued that the physics of substorms is not exclusively rooted in the development of a global tearing mode. Processes at the inner edge of the cross-tail current that cause a disruption of the current and a consequent dipolarization and current wedge may be unrelated to the formation of a macroscale reconnection region. Thus the global evolution of a substorm is probably a complicated superposition of such processes operating on a very localized scale and a global macroscale process that allows for such things as releasing te energy stored in lobe flux and creation of plasmoids.

This paper reports the multisatellite and ground observations of two pseudo-substorm onset events that occurred successively at 0747 UT and 0811 UT, May 30, 1985, with more attention to the 0747 UT onset. The distinguishing features of the 0747 UT event are as follows. (1) The substorm-associated tail reconfiguration started in a very localized region in the near-Earth magnetotail. (2) The magnitude of the current disruption decreased markedly as the disruption region expanded tailward. (3) On the ground the onset of a very small negative bay (approx. 40 nT) was observed simultaneously with the onset of the current disruption, but over a much wider local time sector than the near-Earth tail reconfiguration. Positive bay onsets at mid-latitudes also had a longitudinally wide distribution. From these features we infer than in the present event the current disruption took place filamentarily near AMPTE/CCE at approx. 8.8 R(sub E). It is also inferred that pseudo-substorm onsets are distinguished from standard substorm onsets by the absence of a global expansion of the current disruption, and that the spatial scales of the onset region in the magnetosphere is not a major difference between the two. The present study suggests that the spatial distribution of the magnetic distortion before onsets is an important factor to determine the expansion scale of the current disruption. It is also suggested that the current disruption is basically an internal process of the magnetosphere.

A substorm that occurred on 7 June 1985 at 2209 UT for which simultaneous measurements from ground stations and CCE are available is considered. The event occurred during a close conjunction between CCE, the EISCAT magnetometer cross, and the STARE radar, allowing a detailed comparison of satellite and ground-based data. Two discrete activations took place during the first few minutes of this substorm: the expansion phase onset at 2209 UT and an intensification at 2212 UT, corresponding to a poleward expansion of activity. The energetic particle data indicate that the active region of the magnetotail during the 2212 UT intensification was located tailward of the active region at 2209 UT. This is direct evidence for a correspondence between tailward expansion of localized activity in the near-earth magnetotail (current disruption and particle energization) and poleward expansion of activity (electrojet formation) in the ionosphere.

Observations made during the growth phase and the onset of a substorm on August 31, 1986 are presented. About 20 min after the epsilon parameter at the magnetopause had exceeded 10 exp 11 W, magnetic field dipolarization with an increase of energetic particle fluxes was observed by the AMPTE Charge Composition Explorer (CCE) spacecraft at the geocentric distance of 8.7 R(E) close to magnetic midnight. The event exhibited local signatures of a substorm onset at AMPTE CCE and a weak wedgelike current system in the midnight sector ionosphere, but did not lead to a full-scale substorm expansion; neither did it produce large particle injections at GEO. Only after another 20 min of continued growth phase could the entire magnetosphere-ionosphere system allow the onset of a regular substorm expansion. The initial activation is interpreted as a 'pseudobreakup'. We examine the physical conditions in the near-Earth plasma sheet and analyze the development in the ionosphere using ground-based magnetometers and electric field observations from the STARE radar.

An intense geomagnetic substorm event on May 3, 1986, occurring toward the end of a strong storm period, is studied. The auroral electrojet indices and global imaging data from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres clearly revealed the growth phase and expansion phase development for a substorm with an onset at 0111 UT. An ideally located constellation of four spacecraft allowed detailed observation of the substorm growth phase in the near-tail region. A realistic time-evolving magnetic field model provided a global representation of the field configuration throughout the growth and early expansion phase of the substorm. Evidence of a narrowly localized substorm onset region in the near-earth tail is found. This region spread rapidly eastward and poleward after the 0111 UT onset. The results are consistent with a model of late growth phase formation of a magnetic neutral line. This reconnection region caused plasma sheet current diversion before the substorm onset and eventually led to cross-tail current disruption at the time of the substorm onset.

The particle scattering and current sheet stability features in the geomagnetic tail during the phase of substorm growth were investigated using Tsyganenko's (1989) magnetic field model. In a study of four substorm events which were observed both in the high-altitude nightside tail and in the auroral ionosphere, the model magnetic field was adjusted to each case so as to represent the global field development during the growth phase of the substorms. The model results suggest that the auroral brightenings are connected with processes taking place in the near-earth region inside about 15 earth radii. The results also suggest that there is a connection between the chaotization of the electrons and the auroral brightenings at substorm onset.

The principles of the current sheet catastrophe models are briefly reviewed, and observations of some of the signatures predicted by the theory are presented. The data considered here include AMPTE/CCE observations of fifteen current sheet disruption events. According to the model proposed here, the root cause of the current disruption is some process, as yet unknown, that leads to an increase in the k sub A parameter. Possible causes for the increase in k sub A are discussed.

A pseudobreakup is a phenomenon similar to the substorm expansive phase onset, including an activation of an auroral arc, a burst of Pi2 micropulsations, and enhancement of the westward electrojet. However, these effects are weak and a pseudobreak is generally assumed to be very localized. The pseudobreakups are discussed based on simultaneous observations made in space and on the ground during the substorm growth phase. In the events studied the main features listed above are found, but the significance of the localization is unclear. The optical pseudobreakup, with associated magnetic perturbations, is highly localized, but simultaneously a wide local time sector of the auroral oval may be activated. The major differences between pseudobreakups and substorm expansive phase onsets are concluded to be the intensity and the development that follows. Careful study of pseudobreakups may help to determine phase initiation, and the role of the ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling in the substorm process.

Current disruption events observed by the Charge Composition Explorer during 1985 and 1986 are examined. Occurrence of current disruption was accompanied by large magnetic field turbulence and frequently with reversal in the sign of the field component normal to the neutral sheet. Current disruptions in the near-earth region are found to be typically shortlived (about 1-5 min), and their onsets coincide well with the ground onsets of substorm expansion or intensification in the local time sector of the footpoint of the spacecraft. These events are found almost exclusively close to the field reversal plane of the neutral sheet (within about 0.5 RE). Prior to current disruption the field strength can be reduced to as low as one seventh of the dipole field value and can recover to nearly the dipole value after disruption. The temporal evolution of particle pressure in the near-earth neutral sheet during the onset of current disruption indicates that the current buildup during the substorm growth phase is associated with enhancement in the particle pressure at the neutral sheet.

The CDAW-9 Event C focused upon the early part of 3 May 1986 when a large substorm onset occurred at 0111 UT. By modifying the Tsyganenko 1989 magnetic field model, a model is constructed in which the near-earth current systems are enhanced with time to describe the observed development of the tail magnetic field during the growth phase. The cross-tail current intensity and the thickness of the current sheet are determined by comparison with three spacecraft in the near-earth tail. The location of the auroral bulge as recorded by the Viking imager is mapped to the equatorial current sheet. The degree of chaotization of the thermal electrons is estimated, and the consequences to the tail stability towards on tearing are discussed. It is concluded that the mapping of the brightening region in the auroral oval corresponds to the regions in the tail where the current sheet may be unstable towards ion tearing.

Observations are described of a substorm field-aligned current (FAC) system traversed by the DMSP F7 spacecraft just after 0300 UT on April 25, 1985. It is shown that the substorm FAC portion of the current system was located equatorward of the boundary between open and closed field lines. The equatorward boundary of the substorm FAC into the magnetotail was mapped using the Tsyganenko (1987) model, showing that the boundary corresponds to 6.9 earth radii. The result is consistent with the suggestion of Akasofu (1972) and Lopez and Lui (1990) that the region of substorm initiation lies relatively close to the earth and the concept that an essential feature of substorms is the disruption and diversion of the near-earth current sheet.

A data set of 1821 magnetopause crossings was assembled. Separate fits to subsets of this data set determine the magnetopause location as a function of solar wind dynamic pressure and interplanetary magnetic field orientation. Solar wind dynamic pressure variations produce self-similar magnetopause motion on time scales of one hour or longer. In this paper, the pressure balance relationship between the solar wind dynamic pressure and the location of the subsolar magnetopause are verified. The relationship between the IMF Bz, region 1 Birkeland current strength, the position of the subsolar magnetopause, and the shape of the dayside magnetosphere is quantified. Cross sections of the dayside magnetopause in planes perpendicular to the earth-sun line are oblate.

Results are presented of multipoint observations of a small substorm which occurred at about 0110 UT on April 25, 1985, carried out by AMPTE CCE, AMPTE IRM, DMSP F6, and DMSP F7, as well as by ground auroral stations and midlatitude stations. These data yield information on the latitudinal extent of the polar cap and provide visual identification of substorm aurorae, magnetic perturbations produced directly beneath aurorae, and the situ magnetic field. In addition, they provide magnetic-particle observations of the disruption of the cross-tail current sheet and observations concerning the spatial expansion of the current disruption region. Evidence is presented that the current sheet disruption observed by CCE in the neutral sheet was located on field lines which mapped to the westward traveling surge observed directly overhead of the ground station at Syowa.

Simultaneous magnetic field and particle measurements by AMPTE/CCE with magnetic field measurements by GOES 5 and GOES 6 clarify the structure of the field-aligned Birkeland current system in the post-midnight region of the near-earth magnetotail. The current system, consisting of current sheets flowing in opposite directions, exists near the boundary region of the plasma sheet; its magnetic effects are confined mainly to the current region because of its structure. During the expansion phase of substorms, a single-sheet current system is formed in the boundary region of the plasma sheet and net current is probably present in one meridian plane. This type of current system produces the substorm-related transient variations in the azimuthal (D) component normally observed at synchronous orbit.

It is generally thought that the local effects associated with substorm onset in the near-earth magnetotail (R less than about 10 earth radii) have a component of propagation which is radially earthward. This study presents a case during which it is possible that the local effects of substorm onset propagated radially antisunward, examining energetic-ion and magnetic-field data from AMPTE/CCE and energetic-particle data from the GEO satellite 1982-019 during a period of weak substorm activity on June 11, 1985. Although the effects of this event on the ground were very weak, the substorm had a dramatic effect on at least one portion of the near-earth magnetotail. During the period the spacecraft were in an unusually close radial alignment. The data show that phenomena associated with the local effects of substorm onset began at or near GEO before they were observed at CCE. This event is best explained by a near-earth disruption of the cross-tail current sheet and the consequent formation of a substorm current wedge, with a component of expansion antisunward down the tail.

Results are presented on observations from four satellites (GOES 5, GOES 6, AMPTE CCE, and AMPTE IRM) and two ground stations (San Juan and Tucson) on a substorm that occurred on April 19, 1985 at about 0830 UT. The four spacecraft were arrayed in a configuration that made it possible to separate the effects arising from the longitudinal versus the radial expansion of the substorm current wedge and thus to examine its spatial evolution. The sequence of events that was observed suggests that, during this substorm, the disruption of the cross-tail current sheet, the formation of the substorm current wedge, and the expansion of the plasma sheet began in the near-earth region, and subsequently spread tailward as well as longitudinally.

In this paper, 167 dispersionless energetic ion injections which were observed by AMPTE CCE are identified. The radial and local time distribution of the events as a function of kp is qualitatively similar to that envisioned in the injection boundary model of Mauk and McIlwain (1974). It is argued that particles observed during dispersionless injections are locally energized during the disruption of the cross-tail current sheet. Therefore, the injection boundary is identified as derived from the spatial distribution of dispersionless injections, with the earthward edge of the region of the magnetotail which undergoes current sheet disruption during the substorm expansion phase. It is shown that this qualitative model for the generation of the injection boundary can provide an explanation for the dispersionless nature, the double spiral shape, and the Kp dependence of the boundary.

Using AMPTE/CCE data taken in 1985 and 1986 when the CCE apogee (8.8 earth radii) was within 4.5 hours of midnight, 167 injection events in the near-earth magnetotail have been cataloged. These events are exactly or nearly dispersionless on a 72-sec time scale from 25 keV to 285 keV. The changes in the field magnitude are found to be consistent with the expected effects of the diversion/disruption of the cross-tail current during a substorm, and the latitudinal position of the current sheet is highly variable within the orbit of CCE. The local time variation of the magnetic-field changes implies that the substorm current wedge is composed of longitudinally broad Birkeland currents.

The relationship between the morphology of energetic particle substorm injections and the change in the magnetic field magnitude over the course of the event is examined. Using the statistical relationships between the magnetic field during the growth phase and the change in the field magnitude during substorms calculated by Lopez et al. (1988), a limited number of dispersionless ion injections observed by AMPTE CCE are selected. It is argued that this limited set is representative of a large set of events and that the conclusions drawn from examining those events are valid for substorms in general in the inner magnetosphere. It is demonstrated that in an event when CCE directly observed the disruption of the current sheet, the particle and field data show that the region of particle acceleration was highly turbulent and was temporally, and perhaps spatially, limited and that the high fluxes of energetic particles are qualitatively associated with intense inductive electric fields.

Using energetic-particle data taken in the near-earth tail by the AMPTE/Charge Composition Explorer (CCE) satellite, 167 ion injection events, that were essentially dispersionless over a 25-285 keV energy range, were identified, and the variations in the total magnetic field strength over the course of these events were examined in order to determine the dependence of the magnetic field strength on dipole latitude. Results indicate that, during periods of substorm activity, the latitudinal position of the current sheet varied significantly within the 32-deg wedge centered on the dipole equator traversed by CCE. Results also suggest that, even in the near-earth magnetotail out to 8.8 R(E) (CCE apogee), the local field measurements are a better guide to the determination of satellite's position relative to the current shield during a substorm, than is the magnetic latitude.

On June 1, 1985 the AMPTE/CCE spacecraft (at a geocentric distance of about 8.8 earth radii at the midnight neutral sheet region) observed a dispersionless energetic particle injection and an increase in magnetic field magnitude, which are features commonly attributed to disruption of the near-earth cross-tail current sheet during substorm expansion onsets. An analysis based on high time-resolution measurements from the magnetometer and the energetic particle detector indicates that the current sheet disruption region exhibited localized (less than 1 earth radius) and transient (less than 1 min) particle intensity enhancements, accompanied by complex magnetic field changes with occasional development of a southward magnetic field component. Similar features are seen in other current disruption/diversion events observed by the CCE. The present analysis suggests that the current disruption region is quite turbulent, similar to laboratory experiments on current sheet disruption, with signatures unlike those expected from an X-type neutral line configuration. No clear indication of periodicity in any magnetic field parameter is discernible for this current disruption event.

The longitudinal and radial distribution of 103 substorm dipolarization events in the equatorial nightside magnetosphere from low altitude to about 9 R(E) observed by AMPTE/CCE is examined. The center of the distribution was located near midnight. For Kp of 3- or less, the distribution peak shifted toward the premidnight region, whereas for Kp of 4+ and higher, the distribution peak was inside the postmidnight region. The substorm frequency for the high-Kp case was about four times larger than the low-to-moderate-Kp case. The occurrence frequency of events increased with increasing radial distance, and no events were observed inside of 6.4 R(E). This radial distribution suggests that, on average, the substorm initiation region is greater than about 8 R(E). In addition, the average radial position of the signatures decreased with increasing Kp.

This paper presents a statistical study of the radial and azimuthal propagation of substorm effects in the near-geosynchronous magnetotail. Data from five spacecraft (AMPTE/CCE, 1979-053, 1982-019, GOES-5, and GOES-6) have been used in the study. Since CCE has an apogee of 8.8 earth radii, those data allow for the study of both the radial and azimuthal propagation characteristics of substorm events. A list of ion injections was compiled from CCE energetic particle data obtained in 1985 and 1986. Those injections are dispersionless over an energy range of 25 to 285 keV on a 72-sec time scale. Dispersionless injections during which 1979-053 or 1982-019 were on the nightside in close longitudinal proximity to CCE were selected for the study. The most significant correlation in the data is between the local time separation between any two spacecraft and the time delay between the local onsets.

This paper presents a magnetic field drift shell-splitting model for the unusual butterfly and head-and-shoulder energetic (E greater than 25 keV) particle pitch angle distributions (PADs) which appear deep within the dayside magnetosphere during the course of storms and substorms. Drift shell splitting separates the high and low pitch angle particles in nightside injections as they move to the dayside magnetosphere, so that the higher pitch angle particles move radially away from earth. Consequently, butterfly PADs with a surplus of low pitch angle particles form on the inner edge of the injection, but head-and-shoulder PADs with a surplus of high pitch angle particles form on the outer edge. A similar process removes high pitch angle particles from the inner dayside magnetosphere during storms, leaving the remaining lower pitch angle particles to form butterfly PADs on the inner edge of the ring current. A detailed case and statistical study of Charge Composition Explorer/Medium-energy Particle Analyzer observations, as well as a review of previous work, shows most examples of unusual PADs to be consistent with the model.

This paper presents a detailed analysis of a compressional Pc 5 wave observed in the postmidnight sector on July 21, 1986, using data from the magnetometer, the charge-energy-mass spectrometer, and the medium-energy particle analyzer aboard the AMPTE/Charge Composition Explorer (CCE) spacecraft. The Pc 5 wave exhibited harmonically related transverse and compressional magnetic oscillations, modulation of the flux of medium energy protons, and a large azimuthal wave number, i.e., properties that are similar to those of compressional Pc5 waves observed previously at geostationary orbit. The unique observations recorded by the AMPTE/CCE included the occurrence of the wave in the postmidnight sector, its sunward propagation with respect to the spacecraft, and the left-handed polarization of the perturbed magnetic field. In spite of the morphological uniqueness observed, the excitation of the July 21 event is considered to be due to the same type of instability as operates at geostationary orbit.

The leakage model for the escape of energetic magnetospheric particles into the magnetosheath is described, making comparisons with the merging model where possible. Reported observations of energetic particles at the dayside magnetopause are reexamined, and it is concluded that they do not conclusively support the merging model, either on a case-by-case basis or statistically. New observations made by the Charge Composition Explorer satellite during the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers program are presented. They indicate that magnetospheric ions of all species steadily escape into the magnetosheath and stream away from the magnetopause, regardless of the magnetosheath magnetic field orientation. It is concluded that the leakage model explains both the new and old observations at least as well as, or better than, the merging model.

It is proposed that a strong magnet (terrella) be flown at or near the Space Station to create an artificial magnetosphere in a laboratory setting. The relative flow of the ionosphere past the terrella will constitute a plasma wind that will interact with the magnetic field of the terrella to produce a localized magnetosphere. This object could then be extensively studied using diagnostic probes attached to the Space Station or with free flyers. The space and storage requirements would be minimal, since the experiment would be conducted outside the Space Station. The total equipment would consist of several terrella (with varying surface conductivities), approximately 3 small magnetometer/plasma diagnostic packages, and several gas canisters for upstream seeding. Power requirements would be approximately 60 watts. Several track mounted tethers, each approximately or 200 m long in length, with track parallel to the orbital motion and 100 m long, are also needed. Astronaut time needed would be minimal in the tethered configuration (approximately 4 man hours/week). A free flying configuration, while not needing the tether track, would require much more human interaction.

An unusual large-amplitude (from less than 10 nT to greater than 40 nT) magnetic oscillation characterized by about-13-sec periodicity and southward turnings of the field was observed by AMPTE/CCE on August 28, 1986. The magnetic field was often stronger southward, with some southward components exceeding 20 nT being noted. The level of the high frequency perturbations was also seen to be enhanced. It is suggested that these observations may be due to the formation of an X-type neutral line and its motion near the spacecraft.

The relationships between solar wind proton temperature and velocity and between temperature and momentum flux density at 1 AU are examined using National Space Science Data Center IMP 8 solar wind data obtained from late 1984 to early 1985. These relationships are compared with similar ones obtained from a variety of solar wind data spanning 14 years, from 1966 to 1980. It is found that these relationships, particularly the one between temperature and velocity, are very stable over the solar cycles from which these data were drawn. This suggests that the basic physical processes which accelerate and heat the solar wind have remained unchanged for the last 20 years.

Lightning location data from northeastern Colorado and central Florida for the summer months of 1983 have been studied to ascertain the diurnal development of spatial distributions of flash frequencies. The data sources are discussed, and for both investigated regions, the regional geographic and climatic characteristics, the day-to-day variability of lightning activity, the diurnal cycle over the entire region, the spatial distribution of lightning activity, the diurnal changes of spatial distribution, and the diurnal variation of lightning at individual sites are described in detail. In both regions, the time and space distributions of lightning are modulated by the topographic features and the contrasts of the terrain. Lightning activity is a relatively rare and variable phenomenon in both regions when day-to-day frequencies are considered. There thus must be meteorological parameters that determine the extent and frequency of lightning occurrence.

The relationship between proton temperature and momentum flux density/unit mass at 1 AU is examined using Helios 1 solar wind data from 1974 to 1980. In high-speed plasma (V greater than 500 km/s) T(p) increases with increasing n(0) V-squared, where n(0) and T(p) are the density and proton temperature at 1 AU and V is the flow speed. In lowspeed plasma (V less than 500 km/s), T(p) does not increase with increasing n(0) V-squared, and perhaps tends to decrease slightly. These basic relationships between T(p) and n(0) V-squared are not significantly affected by stream interactions. A qualitative explanation of these results is offered in the context of a solar wind model that includes deposition of momentum and energy extending well outward into the interplanetary medium.

It is proposed that a strong magnet (terrella) be flown at or near the Space Station to create an artificial magnetosphere in a laboratory setting. The relative flow of the ionosphere past the terrella will constitute a plasma wind that will interact with the magnetic field of the terrella to produce a localized magnetosphere. This object could then be extensively studied using diagnostic probes attached to the Space Station, or with free flyers. The space and storage requirements would be minimal, since the experiment would be conducted outside the space station. The total equipment would consist of several terrella (with varying surface conductivities), approximately 3 small magnetometer/plasma diagnostic packages, and several gas canisters for upstream seeding. Power requirements would be approximately 60 watts. Several track mounted tethers, each approximately or 200 m long in length, with track parallel to the orbital motion and 100 m long, are also needed. Astronaut time needed would be minimal in the tethered configuration (approximately 4 man hours/week). A free flying configuration, while not needing the tether track, would require much more human interaction.

Helios 1 data are analyzed to find an experimental fit for the temperature-velocity relationship at 1 AU. It is shown that the proton temperature-velocity changes at a velocity of approximately 500 km/s. Interplanetary dynamic processes, i.e., stream interactions, are shown to affect the temperature-velocity relationships less than 22 percent; the functional form of these relationships appears to be preserved throughout the solar cycle. It is pointed out that any comprehensive model of the solar wind will have to address the difference in the temperature-velocity relationship between the low- and high-speed wind, since this is a product of the acceleration and subsequent heating process generating the solar wind.

This paper reports the response of energetic ions during two types of magnetic oscillations: an azimuthal fluctuation and a radial fluctuation, both with periods in the Pc4-Pc5 range. The azimuthal oscillations occur on April 30, 1985 from 0950 to 1210 UT at 8.7 to 7.0 R(E) and from 1.5 to 2.8 MLT. The radial oscillations occur on April 26, 1985 from 1200 to 1400 UT at 8.7 to 7.5 R(E) and from 2.2 to 3.0 MLT. In this case the particles show in phase periodic flux variations in sectors with radial gradients in the flux. These particle fluctuations represent two distinct modulations, each associated with a basic mode of magnetic oscillation in the near-earth magnetotail.

From 3 to 10 percent of the time, the solar wind has a radial proton temperature between 15,000 K and 3500 K (the lowest recorded temperature). This 'cold' component shows some very important features that make it worthy of special study. It shows a temperature dependence on helicentric distance that is nearly adiabatic. When extrapolated back to 3 R(s), assuming adiabatic cooling, the resulting temperature for this cold component is in good agreement with coronal temperatures near the sonic point. Most importantly, the proton velocities and densities associated with this cold component match those predicted by solar wind models that do not incorporate significant wave heating. It is concluded that this is one solar wind component that fits well with appropriate models.

Construction of a Solar Power Satellite (SPS) would require the injection of large quantities of propellant to transport material from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to the construction site at Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO). This injection, in the form of approx 10 to the 32nd power, 2 KeV argon ions (and associated electrons) per SPS, is comparable to the content of the plasmasphere (approx 10 to the 31st power ions). In addition to the mass deposited, this represents a considerable injection of energy. The injection is examined in terms of a simple model for the expansion of the beam plasma. General features of the subsequent magnetospheric convection of the argon are also examined.
