The design of cable-stayed bridges requires the determination of several design variables' values. Civil engineers usually perform this task by hand as an iteration of steps that stops when the engineer is happy with both the cost and maintaining the structural constraints of the solution. The problem's difficulty arises from the fact that changing a variable may affect other variables, meaning that they are not independent, suggesting that we are facing a deceptive landscape. In this work, we compare two approaches to a baseline solution: a Genetic Algorithm and a CMA-ES algorithm. There are two objectives when designing the bridges: minimizing the cost and maintaining the structural constraints in acceptable values to be considered safe. These are conflicting objectives, meaning that decreasing the cost often results in a bridge that is not structurally safe. The results suggest that CMA-ES is a better option for finding good solutions in the search space, beating the baseline with the same amount of evaluations, while the Genetic Algorithm could not. Maintaining genetic diversity as a means to avoid premature convergence is critical in Genetic Programming. Several approaches have been proposed to achieve this, with some focusing on the mating phase from coupling dissimilar solutions to some form of self-adaptive selection mechanism. In nature, genetic diversity can be the consequence of many different factors, but when considering reproduction Sexual Selection can have an impact on promoting variety within a species. Specifically, Mate Choice often results in different selective pressures between sexes, which in turn may trigger evolutionary differences among them. Although some mechanisms of Sexual Selection have been applied to Genetic Programming in the past, the literature is scarce when it comes to mate choice. Recently, a way of modelling mating preferences by ideal mate representations was proposed, achieving good results when compared to a standard approach. These mating preferences evolve freely in a self-adaptive fashion, creating an evolutionary driving force of its own alongside fitness pressure. The inner mechanisms of this approach operate from personal choice, as each individual has its own representation of a perfect mate which affects the mate to be selected. In this paper, we compare this method against a random mate choice to assess whether there are advantages in evolving personal preferences. We conducted experiments using three symbolic regression problems and different mutation rates. The results show that self-adaptive mating preferences are able to create a more diverse set of solutions when compared to the traditional approach and a random mate approach (with statistically significant differences) and have a higher success rate in three of the six instances tested.

We consider the problem of evolving a particular kind of shift-invariant transformation – namely, Reversible Cellular Automata (RCA) defined by conserved landscape rules – using GA and GP. To this end, we employ three different optimization strategies: a single-objective approach carried out with GA and GP where only the reversibility constraint of marker CA is considered, a multi-objective approach based on GP where both reversibility and the Hamming weight are taken into account, and a lexicographic approach where GP first optimizes only the reversibility property until a conserved landscape rule is obtained, and then maximizes the Hamming weight while retaining reversibility. The results are discussed in the context of three different research questions stemming from exhaustive search experiments on conserved landscape CA, which concern (1) the difficulty of the associated optimization problem for GA and GP, (2) the utility of conserved landscape CA in the domain of cryptography and reversible computing, and (3) the relationship between the reversibility property and the Hamming weight.

Objetivos: Avaliar e comparar a morbidade neonatal entre recém-nascidos pré-termo tardios (RNPT-T) e recém-nascidos de termo precoce (RNT-P). Métodos: Estudo transversal retrospetivo, incluindo nascidos vivos em uma maternidade hospitalar de referência regional em Portugal, nos anos de 2014 e 2015, com idade gestacional entre 340/7 e 386/7 semanas. Os RNPT-T (340/7-366/7semanas) foram considerados casos e os RNT-P (370/7-386/7 semanas) foram considerados controles. Foram excluídos recém-nascidos com malformações congênitas, ausência de acompanhamento pré-natal e internação por motivo social ou causa materna. Foi avaliada e comparada a morbidade neonatal entre os dois grupos, utilizando o teste t de Student para comparação entre médias (variáveis contínuas) e o Qui-quadrado ou teste de Fisher para comparação entre variáveis categóricas. Introdução: A hemorragia pulmonar tem sido associada a elevada morbimortalidade nos recém-nascidos grandes pré-termos.Este estudo pretendeu avaliar os fatores de risco mais relacionados com a hemorragia pulmonar nestes recém-nascidos. Métodos: Estudo caso-controlo incluindo recém-nascidos de muito baixo peso e/ou idade gestacional inferior a 32 semanas, internados numa maternidade com apoio perinatal diferenciado, entre 1 de janeiro de 1995 e 31 de dezembro de 2015. Definiu-se caso como hemorragia pulmonar (n = 32) e, para cada caso, foram selecionados dois controlos (n = 64) com igual idade gestacional, sem hemorragia pulmonar. Foram analisados fatores de risco para hemorragia pulmonar e complicações associadas. Resultados: A incidência de hemorragia pulmonar foi de 2,3%. Os casos apresentavam maior gravidade clínica (p = 0,007) e maior taxa de recém-nascidos leves para a idade gestacional (p = 0,035). A hemorragia pulmonar associou-se a menor uti lização de corti coides pré-natais (p = 0,016), maior administração de surfactante (p = 0,001), transfusão de glóbulos vermelhos nos primeiros seis dias de vida (p < 0,001), necessidade de suporte inotrópico (p < 0,001) e hemorragia peri-intraventricular grave (p < 0,001). Após ajustamento por regressão logísti ca, apenas eram signifi cati vas a transfusão de glóbulos vermelhos (p < 0,001) e o uso de corti coide pré-natal (p = 0,027). Os recém-nascidos com hemorragia pulmonar apresentaram maior mortalidade (p = 0,004). Discussão: A hemorragia pulmonar surge em doentes mais graves e piora o seu prognósti co. A transfusão de glóbulos vermelhos realizada precocemente associou-se de forma positi va com a hemorragia pulmonar, contrariamente aos corti coides pré-natais que apresentaram um efeito protetor, Portuguese Journal of Pediatrics, Vol. 47 No. 4 (2016)

This work proposes a solution to endow buildings with efficiency and intelligence, exploiting the advantages of Complex Event Processing techniques and Internet of Things (IoT) principles. This combination allows efficient management of the entire infrastructure, an in particular enabling lighting to be tailored to the users needs. We validate this solution through a prototype implementation, based on wireless sensors and actuator networks that interact with the environment, using standard lightweight protocols designed for IoT. The prototype is based on high performance and real time platforms, and complex methods for analysis of large streams of data. The implementation is applied to a real world scenario, and will be used as the standard solution for management and automation of an existing building.

Tese de doutoramento em Programa de Doutoramento em Ciência da Informação e Tecnologia, apresentada ao Departamento de Engenharia Informática da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra Os Algoritmos Evolucionários (AE) são métodos computacionais de procura estocástica inspirados pelos conceitos da selecção natural e da genética. Este tipo de algoritmos tem sido usado com sucesso para resolver problemas em dominios da aprendizagem, do design e da optimização. Para utilizar um AE é necessário definir as suas componentes principais, como por exemplo os operadores de variação, os operadores de selecção de pais, e os mecanismos de selecção de sobreviventes. O desempenho de um AE pode ser altamente melhorado se cada uma destas componentes for ajustada para o problema especifico que se pretende resolver. Normalmente estas modificações são feitas manualmente e requerem um grau de conhecimento elevado. Para tentar melhorar este processo, os investigadores têm vindo a propor algoritmos para automaticamente criar AE. Estes novos métodos usam um (meta-) algoritmo que combina as diversas componentes e parâmetros, de maneira a criar a estratégia que melhor se aplica ao problema em questão. Neste contexto surge a área das Híper-Heurísticas (HH), cujo principal objectivo é o desenvolvimento de meta-algoritmos que sejam eficientes. A Programação Genética (PG), e em particular as variantes baseadas em representações gramaticais são habitualmente utilizadas como motor de pesquisa nas HH. Este trabalho prentende estudar e analisar em que condições a eficácia dos métodos de pesquisa pode ser melhorada, no contexto da evolução automática de AE. As principais contribuições podem ser divididas em três aspectos. A primeira consiste na construção de uma framework de HH baseada em Evolução Gramatical (EG). A framework está dividida em duas fases complementares: Aprendizagem e Validação. Na aprendizagem, um motor de EG é usado para combinar as componentes de baixo nível que estão especificadas numa Gramática Livre de Contexto. Na validação, os melhores algoritmos encontrados são aplicados a cenários diferentes dos da aprendizagem, para analisar a sua capacidade de generalização. A segunda contribuição está relacionada com a análise do impacto que as condições de aprendizagem têm na estrutura final dos algoritmos que estão a ser aprendidos e consequentemente na sua capacidade de optimização. Além disso é feita uma análise da relação que existe entre a qualidade dos algoritmos na fase de aprendizagem, e a qualidade dos algoritmos na fase de validação. Em concreto, analisa-se se os melhores algoritmos da fase de aprendizagem mantêm o seu bom desempenho na fase de validação. Por fim, a última contribuição é uma proposta de uma nova representação para EG que permite resolver alguns problemas relacionados com a exploração do espaço de procura. Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) are stochastic computational methods loosely inspired by the principles of natural selection and genetics. They have been successfully used to solve complex problems in the domains of learning, design and optimization. When using an EA practitioners have to define its main components such as the variation operators, the selection and replacement mechanisms. The performance of an EA can be greatly enhanced if the components are tailored to the specific situation being addressed. These modifications are usually done manually and require a reasonable degree of expertise. In order to ease the use of EAs some researchers have developed methods to automatically design this type of algorithms. Usually, these methods rely on an (meta-) algorithm that combine components and parameters, in order to learn the one that is most suited for the problem being addressed. The area of Hyper-Heuristics (HH) emerges in this context focusing on the development of efficient meta-algorithms. Genetic Programming (GP), specifically the grammar based variants, are commonly used as HH. In this work, we study and analyze the conditions in which Grammatical Evolution (GE) can be enhanced to automatically design EAs. The main contributions can be divided in three aspects. Firstly, we propose an HH framework that relies on GE as the search algorithm. The proposed framework is divided in two complementary phases: Learning and Validation. In Learning the GE engine is used to combine low level components that are specified in a Context Free Grammar. In the second phase, Validation, the best algorithms learned are selected to be applied to scenarios different from the learning, in order to evaluate their generalization capacity. Secondly we study the impact that the learning conditions have in the final structure of the algorithms that are being learned. Moreover, we analyze the relationship between the quality exhibited by the algorithms during learning and their effective optimization ability when used in unseen scenarios. In concrete we analyze if the best strategies discover in learning still have the same good behavior in validation. Our final contribution addresses some of the limitations exhibited by Grammatical Evolution. The result is a novel representation with an enhanced performance. FCT - SFRH/BD/79649/2011

An infinite-horizon discrete time model with multiple size-class structures using a transition matrix is built to assess optimal harvesting schedules in the context of Non-Industrial Private Forest (NIPF) owners. Three model specifications accounting for forest income, financial return on an asset and amenity valuations are considered. Numerical simulations suggest uneven-aged forest management where a rational forest owner adapts her or his forest policy by influencing the regeneration of trees or adjusting consumption dynamics depending on subjective time preference and market return rate dynamics on the financial asset. Moreover she or he does not value significantly non-market benefits captured by amenity valuations relatively to forest income. NSBE - UNL
