The latest NA49 results on fluctuations of multiplicity and average transverse-momentum analyzed on an event-by-event basis are presented for central Pb+Pb interactions over the whole SPS energy range (20A - 158A GeV). The scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution decreases with collision energy whereas the $\Phi_{p_{T}}$ measure of $$ fluctuations is small and independent of collision energy. Thus in central Pb+Pb collisions these fluctuations do not show an indication of the critical point of strongly interacting matter., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, talk presented at Quark Matter 2008 Reference added and some typos corrected

Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c around midrapidity of $\pi^{\pm}, p, pbar, K^{\pm}$ in Pb+Pb reactions were measured at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$ GeV by the CERN-NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors $R_{AA}$ and $R_{CP}$ were extracted and are compared to RHIC results at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. The modification factor $R_{AA}$ shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. This indicates that the Cronin effect is the dominating effect in our energy range. The modification factor $R_{CP}$, in which the contribution of the Cronin effect is reduced, shows a saturation well below unity in the $\pi^{\pm}$ channel. The extracted $R_{CP}$ values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range, except for $\pi^{\pm}$ above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum. There the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC.

Measurements of charged pion and kaon production are presented in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy as well as in semi-central C+C and Si+Si interactions at 40A GeV. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra and total yields are determined as a function of centrality. The system-size and centrality dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy are derived from the data presented here and published data for C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158A GeV beam energy. At both energies a steep increase with centrality is observed for small systems followed by a weak rise or even saturation for higher centralities. This behavior is compared to calculations using transport models (UrQMD and HSD), a percolation model and the core-corona approach., 32 pages, 14 figures, 4 tables, typo table II corrected

Pion production in nuclear collisions at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is investigated with the aim to search, in a restricted domain of the phase diagram, for power laws in the behavior of correlations that are compatible with critical QCD. We analyzed interactions of nuclei of different sizes (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, Pb+Pb) at 158A GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is performed for π+π- pairs with an invariant mass very close to the two-pion threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma component in a hadronic medium, even if the σ meson has no well-defined vacuum state. It turns out that for the Pb+Pb system the proposed analysis technique cannot be applied without entering the invariant mass region with strong Coulomb correlations. As a result the treatment becomes inconclusive in this case. Our results for the other systems indicate the presence of power-law fluctuations in the freeze-out state of Si+Si approaching in size the prediction of critical QCD. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Pion production in nuclear collisions at the SPS is investigated with the aim to search, in a restricted domain of the phase diagram, for power-laws in the behavior of correlations which are compatible with critical QCD. We have analyzed interactions of nuclei of different size (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, Pb+Pb) at 158$A$ GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is performed for $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs with invariant mass very close to the two-pion threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma component in a hadronic medium, even if the $\sigma$-meson has no well defined vacuum state. It turns out that for the Pb+Pb system the proposed analysis technique cannot be applied without entering the invariant mass region with strong Coulomb correlations. As a result the treatment becomes inconclusive in this case. Our results for the other systems indicate the presence of power-law fluctuations in the freeze-out state of Si+Si approaching in size the prediction of critical QCD., Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures

Lattice QCD calculations locate the QCD critical point at energies accessible at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). We present average transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations, as well as baryon and anti-baryon transverse mass spectra which are expected to be sensitive to effects of the critical point. The future CP search strategy of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the SPS is also discussed., Comment: EPS HEP09 proceedings, July 16-22 2009, Krakow, Poland

Results on Lambda, Anti-lambda, and Xi- production in centrality selected Pb+Pb reactions at 40A and 158A GeV and in near-central C+C and Si+Si reactions at 158A GeV are presented. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and multiplicities in dependence of the system size are discussed. Comparisons to transport models (UrQMD2.3 and HSD) and to the core-corona approach are performed. While Lambda and Anti-lambda production can be described by transport models reasonably well, these models do not agree with the Xi- measurements. On the other hand, the core-corona picture fits very well the system-size dependence of Lambda and Xi-, while it agrees less well with the Anti-lambda data., 13 pages, 12 figures. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We present measurements of the energy dependence of event-by-event fluctuations in the K/π and (p+p̄)/π multiplicity ratios in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN SPS. The particle ratio fluctuations were obtained for central Pb+Pb collisions at five collision energies, sNN, between 6.3 and 17.3 GeV. After accounting for the effects of finite-number statistics and detector resolution, we extract the strength of nonstatistical fluctuations at each energy. For the K/π ratio, larger fluctuations than expected for independent particle production are found at all collision energies. The fluctuations in the (p+p̄)/π ratio are smaller than expectations from independent particle production, indicating correlated pion and proton production from resonance decays. For both ratios, the deviation from purely statistical fluctuations shows an increase toward lower collision energies. The results are compared to transport model calculations, which fail to describe the energy dependence of the K/π ratio fluctuations. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

Results are presented on event-by-event fluctuations of transverse momenta $p_T$ in central Pb+Pb interactions at 20$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 80$A$, and 158$A$ GeV. The analysis was performed for charged particles at forward center-of-mass rapidity ($1.1 < y^{*}_ < 2.6$). Three fluctuation measures were studied: the distribution of average transverse momentum - $M(p_T)$ - in the event, the $_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and two-particle transverse momentum correlations. Fluctuations of $p_T$ are small and show no significant energy dependence in the energy range of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Results are compared with QCD-inspired predictions for the critical point, and with the UrQMD model. Transverse momentum fluctuations, similar to multiplicity fluctuations, do not show the increase expected for freeze-out near the critical point of QCD., Published in Phys. Rev. C

Results on charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A and 30A GeV are presented and compared to data at lower and higher energies. Around 30A GeV a rapid change of the energy dependence for the yields of pions and kaons as well as for the shape of the transverse mass spectra is observed. The change is compatible with the prediction that the threshold for production of a state of deconfined matter at the early stage of the collisions is located at low CERN Super Proton Synchroton energies.

Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c around midrapidity of pi(+/-), p, (p) over bar, and K-+/- in Pb+Pb reactions were measured at root s(NN) = 17.3 GeV by the CERN-NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors R-AA for pi(+/-) and R-CP for pi(+/-), p, (p) over bar, K-+/- were extracted and compared with results obtained at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The modification factor R-AA shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. This indicates that the Cronin effect is the dominating effect in our energy range. The modification factor R-CP, in which the contribution of the Cronin effect is reduced, shows a saturation well below unity in the pi(+/-) channel. The extracted R-CP values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range, except for pi(+/-) above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum. There the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Measurements of Bose-Einstein correlations of pi(-)pi(-) pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions were performed with the NA49 detector at the CERN Super Proton Synchroton for beam energies of 20A,30A,40A,80A, and 158A GeV. Correlation functions were measured in the longitudinally comoving “out-side-long” reference frame as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in the forward hemisphere of the reaction. Radius and correlation strength parameters were obtained from fits of a Gaussian parametrization. The results show a decrease of the radius parameters with increasing transverse-momentum characteristic of strong radial flow in the pion source. No striking dependence on pion-pair rapidity or beam energy is observed. Static and dynamic properties of the pion source are obtained from simultaneous fits with a blast-wave model to radius parameters and midrapidity transverse-momentum spectra. Predictions of hydrodynamic and microscopic models of Pb+Pb collisions are discussed.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Multiplicity fluctuations of positively, negatively, and all charged hadrons in the forward hemisphere were studied in central Pb+ Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. The multiplicity distributions and their scaled variances. are presented as functions of their dependence on collision energy as well as on rapidity and transverse momentum. The distributions have bell-like shapes and their scaled variances are in the range from 0.8 to 1.2 without any significant structure in their energy dependence. No indication of the critical point in fluctuations are observed. The string-hadronic ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model significantly overpredicts the mean, but it approximately reproduces the scaled variance of the multiplicity distributions. The predictions of the statistical hadron-resonance gas model obtained within the grand-canonical and canonical ensembles disagree with the measured scaled variances. The narrower than Poissonian multiplicity fluctuations measured in numerous cases may be explained by the impact of conservation laws on fluctuations in relativistic systems.

Meson production is studied by the NA49 Collaboration in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A,30A,40A,80A, and 158A GeV beam energy. The data are compared with measurements at lower and higher energies and with microscopic and thermal models. The energy dependence of yields and spectral distributions is compatible with the assumption that partonic degrees of freedom set in at low SPS energies. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

Measurements of Bose-Einstein correlations of pi-pi- pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions were performed with the NA49 detector at the CERN Super Proton Synchroton for beam energies of 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. Correlation functions were measured in the longitudinally co-moving ``out-side-long'' reference frame as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in the forward hemisphere of the reaction. Radius and correlation strength parameters were obtained from fits of a Gaussian parametrization. The results show a decrease of the radius parameters with increasing transverse momentum characteristic of strong radial flow in the pion source. No striking dependence on pion-pair rapidity or beam energy is observed. Static and dynamic properties of the pion source are obtained from simultaneous fits with a blast-wave model to radius parameters and midrapidity transverse momentum spectra. Predictions of hydrodynamic and microscopic models of Pb+Pb collisions are discussed.

The NA49 experiment has collected comprehensive data on particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions over the whole SPS beam energies range, the critical energy domain where the expected phase transition to a deconfined phase is expected to occur. The latest results from Pb+Pb collisions between 20$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV on baryon stopping and light nuclei production as well as those for strange hyperons are presented. The measured data on $p$, $\bar{p}$, $\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$, $\Xi^-$ and $\bar{\Xi}^+$ production were used to evaluate the rapidity distributions of net-baryons at SPS energies and to compare with the results from the AGS and the RHIC for central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions. The dependence of the yield ratios and the inverse slope parameter of the $m_t$ spectra on the collision energy and centrality, and the mass number of the produced nuclei $^3He$, $t$, $d$ and $\bar{d}$ are discussed within coalescence and statistical approaches. Analysis of the total multiplicity exhibits remarkable agreement between the measured yield for $^3He$ and those predicted by the statistical hadronization model. In addition, new results on $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ as well as $\Xi^-$ production in minimum bias Pb+Pb reactions at 40$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV and central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions are presented. The system size dependence of the yields of these hyperons was analysed to determine the evolution of strangeness enhancement relative to elementary p+p collisions., Comment: Presented at Critical Point and Onset of Deconfinement 4th International Workshop, July 9-13 2007, GSI Darmstadt,Germany}

Status of the new experimental program to study hadron production in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS will be presented. In particular, a detailed physics motivation and experimental strategy will be given for the part of the program related to the physics of strongly interacting matter: search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter, study properties of the onset of deconfinement, and high p_T measurements in p+p and p+A interactions. Multiplicity distributions of hadrons produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied within the hadron-resonance gas model in the large volume limit. In the canonical ensemble conservation of three charges (baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness) is enforced. In addition, in the micro-canonical ensemble energy conservation is included. An analytical method is used to account for resonance decays. Multiplicity distributions and scaled variances for negatively charged hadrons are presented along the chemical freeze-out line of central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions from SIS to LHC energies. Predictions obtained within different statistical ensembles are compared with preliminary NA49 experimental results on central Pb+Pb collisions in the SPS energy range. The measured fluctuations are significantly narrower than a Poisson reference distribution, and clearly favor expectations for the micro-canonical ensemble., 6 pages, 3 figures

The latest NA49 results on event-by-event transverse momentum fluctuations are presented for central Pb+Pb interactions over the whole SPS energy range (20A - 158A GeV). Two different methods are applied: evaluating the $\Phi_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and studying two-particle transverse momentum correlations. The obtained results are compared to predictions of the UrQMD model. The results on the energy dependence are compared to the NA49 data on the system size dependence. The NA61 (SHINE, NA49-future) strategy of searching of the QCD critical end-point is also discussed., Comment: proceedings article from CPOD07 (figure 7 - updated, reference 2 - modified)

Nuclear Theory ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The elliptic flow of Lambda hyperons has been measured by the NA49 Collaboration at the CERN-SPS in semicentral Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The standard method of correlating particles with the event plane was used. Measurements of v(2) near midrapidity are reported as a function of rapidity, centrality and transverse momentum. Elliptic flow of Lambda particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with v(2) for pions and protons as well as with model calculations. The observation of significant elliptic flow and its mass dependence suggest strong collective behavior of the matter produced in collisions of heavy nuclei already at the SPS. Scaling properties of elliptic flow of different particle species have been tested at 158A GeV. The limited p(T) range of the data does not allow for a decisive test of the coalescence model.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The centrality and system size dependence of multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles produced in nuclear collisions at 158A GeV was studied by the NA49 Collaboration. Centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions, semicentral C+C and Si+Si collisions as well as inelastic p+p interactions were analyzed. The number of projectile participants determined on an event-by-event basis was used to characterize the collision centrality. The scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution obtained in the forward rapidity region (1.1 < y(c.m.)< 2.6) shows a significant increase toward peripheral collisions. The results are similar for negatively and positively charged particles and about 50% larger for all charged particles. String-hadronic models of nuclear reactions without the fusion process do not reproduce the rise of fluctuations from central toward peripheral collisions. The measured centrality dependence can be reproduced in superposition models with the assumption of contributions from target participants to particle production in the forward hemisphere or in string models with fusion.

High Energy Physics::Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Results from electric charge correlations studied with the Balance Function (BF) method in A+A collisions from 20A to 158A GeV are presented in two different rapidity intervals: In the midrapidity region we observe a decrease of the width of the BF distribution with increasing centrality of the collision, whereas this effect vanishes in the forward rapidity region. Results from the energy dependence study in central Pb+Pb collisions show that the narrowing of the BF expressed by the normalized width parameter W increases with energy toward the highest CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider energies. Finally we compare our experimental data points with the predictions of several models. The hadronic string models Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics and Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator (HIJING) do not reproduce the observed narrowing of the BF. However, A MultiPhase Transport medel (AMPT), which contains a quark-parton transport phase before hadronization, can reproduce the narrowing of the BF's width with centrality. This confirms the proposed sensitivity of the BF analysis to the time of hadronization. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

We present a summary of measurements of strange particles performed by the experiment NA49 in central and minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions in the beam energy range 20A - 158A GeV. New results on $\Xi$ production in central Pb+Pb collisions and on $\Lambda, \Xi$ production in minimum bias collisions are shown. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions of strange particles at different energies are compared. The energy dependence of the particle yields and ratios is discussed. NA49 measurements of the $\Lambda$ and $\Xi$ enhancement factors are shown for the first time.

Transverse momentum spectra of pi+, pi-, p, anti-p, K+, K-, K0s and Lambda at midrapidity were measured at high pT in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon beam energy by the NA49 experiment. Particle yield ratios (p/pi, K/pi and Lambda/K0s) show an enhancement of the baryon/meson ratio for pT > 2 GeV/c. The nuclear modification factor R_CP is extracted and compared to RHIC measurement and pQCD clculations.

New results on the production of charged pions in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Pions are identified by energy loss measurement in a large TPC tracking system which covers a major fraction of the production phase space. Inclusive invariant cross sections are given on a grid of nearly 300 bins per charge over intervals from 0 to 2 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from 0 to 0.85 in Feynman x. The results are compared to existing data in overlapping energy ranges., Comment: 54 pages, 54 figures, accepted for publication in EPJC

An overview of results from the CERN experiment NA49 is presented with emphasis on most recent measurements. NA49 has systematically studied the dependence of hadron production on energy and system size or centrality. At top-SPS energy the detailed investigation of hadron production, now also extending to elliptic flow of Lambda-baryons and to identified particle yields at high p_t, shows that the created matter behaves in a similar manner as at RHIC energies. In the lower SPS energy range a distinct structure is observed in the energy dependence of the rate of strangeness production and in the slopes of p_t-spectra suggesting the onset of the creation of a deconfined phase of matter.

The transverse mass m(t) distributions for antiprotons are measured at midrapidity for minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV and for central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, and 80A GeV beam energies in the fixed target experiment NA49 at the CERN SPS. The rapidity density dn/dy, inverse slope parameter T, and mean transverse mass < m(t)> derived from the m(t) distributions are studied as a function of the incident energy and the collision centrality and compared to the relevant data on proton production. The shapes of the m(t) distributions of (p) over bar and p are very similar. The ratios of the particle yields, (p) over bar /p and (p) over bar/(Lambda) over bar, are also analyzed. The (p) over bar /p ratio exhibits an increase with decreasing centrality and a steep rise with increasing beam energy. The (Lambda) over bar/(Lambda) over bar ratio increases beyond unity with decreasing beam energy.

The elliptic flow of $\Lambda$ hyperons has been measured by the NA49 experiment in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The standard method of correlating particles with an event plane has been used. Measurements of $v_2$ near mid-rapidity are reported as a function of rapidity, centrality and transverse momentum. Elliptic flow of Lambda particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with $v_2$ for pions and protons as well as with models predictions. Measurements of v 2 near mid-rapidity are reported as a function of rapidity, centrality and transverse momentum. Elliptic flow of Lambda particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with v 2 for pions and protons as well as with models predictions.

The transverse mass distributions for antiprotons are measured at midrapidity for minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV and for central Pb+Pb collisions at 20, 30, 40 and 80 A GeV beam energies in the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. The rapidity density, inverse slope parameter and mean transverse mass derived from the transverse mass distributions are studied as a function of the incident energy and the collision centrality and compared to the relevant proton data. The shapes of the m_T distributions of antiprotons and protons are very similar. The ratios of the particle yields, antiproton/proton and antilambda/antiproton, are also analysed. The antiproton/proton ratio exhibits an increase with diminishing centrality and a steep rise with increasing beam energy. The antilambda/antiproton ratio increases beyond unity with decreasing beam energy. The transverse mass distributions for antiprotons are measured at midrapidity for minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV and for central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A and 80A GeV beam energies in the fixed target experiment NA49 at the CERN SPS. The rapidity density, inverse slope parameter and mean transverse mass derived from the transverse mass distributions are studied as a function of the incident energy and the collision centrality and compared to the relevant data on proton production. The data on m_T spectra of K0S K+ and K- mesons produced in all inelastic p+p and p+pbar interactions in the energy range sqrt(s)NN=4.7-1800GeV are compiled and analyzed. The spectra are parameterized by a single exponential function, dN/(m_T*dm_T)=C exp(-m_T/T), and the inverse slope parameter T is the main object of study. The T parameter is found to be similar for K0S, K+ and K- mesons. It increases monotonically with collision energy from T~30MeV at sqrt(s)NN=4.7GeV to T~220MeV at sqrt(s)NN=1800GeV. The T parameter measured in p+p and p+pbar interactions is significantly lower than the corresponding parameter obtained for central Pb+Pb collisions at all studied energies. Also the shape of the energy dependence of $T$ is different for central Pb+Pb collisions and p+p(pbar) interactions., Comment: more differential analysis added

Emission of pi(+/-), K+/-, phi, and Lambda was measured in near-central C + C and Si + Si collisions at 158 AGeV beam energy. Together with earlier data for p + p, S + S, and Pb + Pb, the system-size dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is obtained. Its fast rise and the saturation observed at about 60 participating nucleons can be understood as the onset of the formation of coherent systems of increasing size.

Electric charge correlations were studied for p+p, C+C, Si+Si, and centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.2 GeV with the NA49 large acceptance detector at the CERN SPS. In particular, long-range pseudorapidity correlations of oppositely charged particles were measured using the balance function method. The width of the balance function decreases with increasing system size and centrality of the reactions. This decrease could be related to an increasing delay of hadronization in central Pb+Pb collisions.

Results are presented on Omega production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158 AGeV beam energy. For the first time in heavy ion reactions, rapidity distributions and total yields were measured for the sum Omega- + anti-Omega+ at 40 AGeV and for Omega- and anti-Omega+ separately at 158 AGeV. The yields are strongly underpredicted by the string-hadronic URQMD model but agree better with predictions from hadron gas model.
