In this study, the pedagogical decision-making processes of 21 Australian early childhood teachers working with children experiencing parental separation and divorce were examined. Transcripts from interviews and a focus group with teachers were analysed using grounded theory methodology. The findings showed that as teachers interacted with young children experiencing parental separation and divorce, they reported using strategic, reflexive pedagogical decision-making processes. These processes comprised five stages: (1) teachers constructing their knowledge, (2) teachers thinking about their knowledge, (3) teachers using decision-making schemas, (4) teachers taking action, and (5) teachers monitoring action and evaluating. This understanding of teachers' reflexive pedagogical decision-making is useful for identifying how teachers and educational leaders can support children experiencing parental separation and divorce or other life challenges.

Accurate screening for cognitive impairment in alcohol and other drug (AOD) services would help to identify individuals who may need supports to obtain the greatest benefit from substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. At present there is no screening measure that has been developed specifically to detect cognitive impairment in a SUD population. This study examines the psychometric properties of the Brief Executive-function Assessment Tool (BEAT), which was specifically designed for this purpose. This study involving 501 individuals with SUD and 145 normal control participants established internal consistency (n = 646; 0.734), interrater (n = 60; 0.994), and test–retest reliability (n = 177; 0.845), and construct (all correlations p ≤ 0.05), and criterion (n = 467; ANCOVA p < 0.001) validity. Test operating characteristics (n = 500; 87% sensitivity, 71% specificity, 21% PPP, and 99% NPP) were also established relative to an independent criterion variable made up of three established performance-based neuropsychological tests. Findings support the reliability and validity of the BEAT as a screening measure of executive function impairment with high sensitivity and a low rate of false negatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Storey Keywords: FGF; ERK1/2; Erk1/2; Chick embryo; Mkp3; Ets genes; Syn-expression Abstract: During early vertebrate development Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) signalling is required for multiple activities including specification of mesodermal, neural and heart tissue, as well as gastrulation movements and regulation of differentiation and pattern onset in the extending body axis. A current challenge is to understand how FGF signalling generates such diverse outcomes. A key FGF downstream pathway is the Ras-MAPK/Erk1/2 cascade, which culminates in the phosphorylation of target proteins, such as the Ets family of transcription factors. To begin to assess specificity downstream of FGF in the chick embryo we have characterised the patterns of Fgfr1-4 expression and Erk1/2 activation, as well as expression of the Erk1/2 specific phosphatase, Mkp3 and of three Ets factor genes (Erm, Pea3 and Er81) from early blastula to the 10 somite stage. We identify new sites of Fgfr expression and show that nearly all regions of Erk1/2 activity are within Fgfr expression domains and require FGF signalling. Differences in intensity, duration, distribution and sub-cellular localisation of activated Erk1/2 are observed in distinct cell populations within the embryo and during wound healing. With few exceptions, a tight correspondence between Erk1/2 activation and Mkp3 expression is found, while specific combinations of Ets factors are associated with distinct regions of Erk1/2 activation. These findings provide a comprehensive spatial and temporal map of FGF/Erk1/2 activity during early chick development and identify region and tissue specific differences in expression of Fgfrs as well as Erk1/2 phosphorylation and transcriptional targets which help to define response specificity. Abstract Background Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disorder involving the degeneration and loss of motor neurons. The mechanisms of motor neuron loss in ALS are unknown and there are no effective treatments. Defects in the distal axon and at the neuromuscular junction are early events in the disease course, and zebrafish provide a promising in vivo system to examine cellular mechanisms and treatments for these events in ALS pathogenesis. Results We demonstrate that transient genetic manipulation of zebrafish to express G93A-SOD1, a mutation associated with familial ALS, results in early defects in motor neuron outgrowth and axonal branching. This is consistent with previous reports on motor neuron axonal defects associated with familial ALS genes following knockdown or mutant protein overexpression. We also demonstrate that upregulation of growth factor signaling is capable of rescuing these early defects, validating the potential of the model for therapeutic discovery. We generated stable transgenic zebrafish lines expressing G93A-SOD1 to further characterize the consequences of G93A-SOD1 expression on neuromuscular pathology and disease progression. Behavioral monitoring reveals evidence of motor dysfunction and decreased activity in transgenic ALS zebrafish. Examination of neuromuscular and neuronal pathology throughout the disease course reveals a loss of neuromuscular junctions and alterations in motor neuron innervations patterns with disease progression. Finally, motor neuron cell loss is evident later in the disease. Conclusions This sequence of events reflects the stepwise mechanisms of degeneration in ALS, and provides a novel model for mechanistic discovery and therapeutic development for neuromuscular degeneration in ALS.

Background: Poor quality sleep can lead to executive function deficits, including problems with inhibitory control. Similarly, substance use is associated with decreased inhibitory control for substance-related stimuli. Therefore, this study investigated whether sleep quality is associated with attentional bias. Methods: Participants were 39 university students (18–28 years, 29 females). An eye tracking task was used to measure attentional bias for alcohol-related stimuli. Alcohol usage and sleep quality were measured using self- report questionnaires (AUDIT and PSQI respectively). Results: An attentional bias related to alcohol usage was observed within the participants. However, there was no association observed with sleep quality. Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude that sleep quality may not influence attentional biases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
