This paper presents the results of studies concerning the production and characterization of Al-SiC/W and Cu-SiC/W composite materials with a 30% volume fraction of reinforcing phase particles as well as the influence of corrosion and thermal shocks on the properties of selected metal matrix composites. Spark plasma sintering method (SPS) was applied for the purpose of producing these materials. In order to avoid the decomposition of SiC surface, SiC powder was coated with a thin tungsten layer using plasma vapour deposition (PVD) method. The obtained results were analysed by the effect of the corrosion and thermal shocks on materials density, hardness, bending strength, tribological and thermal properties. Qualitative X-ray analysis and observation of microstructure of sample surfaces after corrosion tests and thermal shocks were also conducted. The use of PVD technique allows us to obtain an evenly distributed layer of titanium with a constant thickness of 1.5 µm. It was found that adverse environmental conditions and increased temperature result in a change in the material behaviour in wear tests.

One of the ways to decrease thermal conductivity is nano structurization. Cobalt triantimonide (CoSb3) samples with added indium or tellurium were prepared by the direct fusion technique from high purity elements. Ingots were pulverized and re-compacted to form electrodes. Then, the pulsed plasma in liquid (PPL) method was applied. All materials were consolidated using rapid spark plasma sintering (SPS). For the analysis, methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with a laser flash apparatus (LFA) were used. For density measurement, the Archimedes’ method was used. Electrical conductivity was measured using a standard four-wire method. The Seebeck coefficient was calculated to form measured Seebeck voltage in the sample placed in a temperature gradient. The preparation method allowed for obtaining CoSb3 nanomaterial with significantly lower thermal conductivity (10 Wm–1K–1 for pure CoSb3 and 3 Wm–1K–1 for the nanostructured sample in room temperature (RT)). The size of crystallites (from SEM observations) in the powders prepared was about 20 nm, joined into larger agglomerates. The Seebeck coefficient, α, was about –200 µVK–1 in the case of both dopants, In and Te, in microsized material and about –400 µVK–1 for the nanomaterial at RT. For pure CoSb3, α was about 150 µVK–1 and it stood at –50 µVK–1 for nanomaterial at RT. In bulk nanomaterial samples, due to a decrease in electrical conductivity and inversion of the Seebeck coefficient, there was no increase in ZT values and the ZT for the nanosized material was below 0.02 in the measured temperature range, while for microsized In-doped sample it reached maximum ZT = 0.7 in (600K).

The growing complexity of quantum computing devices makes presents challenges for benchmarking their performance as previous, exhaustive approaches become infeasible. Here the authors characterise the quality of their 11-qubit device by successfully computing two quantum algorithms.

Adoptive therapy with engineered T cells shows promising results in treating patients with malignant disease, but is challenged by incomplete responses and tumor recurrences. Here, we aimed to direct the tumor microenvironment in favor of a successful immune response by local secretion of interleukin (IL-) 12 and IL-18 by sadministered T cells. To this end, we engineered T cells with a melanoma-specific T cell receptor (TCR) and murine IL-12 and/or IL-18 under the control of a nuclear-factor of activated T-cell (NFAT)-sensitive promoter. These T cells produced IL-12 or IL-18, and consequently enhanced levels of IFNγ, following exposure to antigen-positive but not negative tumor cells. Adoptive transfer of T cells with a TCR and inducible (i)IL-12 to melanoma-bearing mice resulted in severe, edema-like toxicity that was accompanied by enhanced levels of IFNγ and TNFα in blood, and reduced numbers of peripheral TCR transgene-positive T cells. In contrast, transfer of T cells expressing a TCR and iIL-18 was without side effects, enhanced the presence of therapeutic CD8+ T cells within tumors, reduced tumor burden and prolonged survival. Notably, treatment with TCR+iIL-12 but not iIL-18 T cells resulted in enhanced intra-tumoral accumulation of macrophages, which was accompanied by a decreased frequency of therapeutic T cells, in particular of the CD8 subset. In addition, when administered to mice, iIL-18 but not iIL-12 demonstrated a favorable profile of T cell co-stimulatory and inhibitory receptors. In conclusion, we observed that treatment with T cells engineered with a TCR and iIL18 T cells is safe and able to skew the tumor microenvironment in favor of an improved anti-tumor T cell response.

This study used descriptive statistical methods to investigate how the yield development of winter and spring barley was affected by annual weather variability within the vegetative, ear formation, anthesis, and grain-filling phases. Meteorological, phenological, and yield data from the agrometeorological field experiment in Berlin-Dahlem (Germany) between 2009 and 2022 were used. The results show that the lower yield variability in winter barley (cv = 18.7%) compared to spring barley (cv = 32.6%) is related to an earlier start and longer duration of relevant phenological phases, so yield formation is slower under generally cooler weather conditions. The significantly higher yield variability in spring barley was mainly the result of adverse weather conditions during ear formation and anthesis. In both phases, high temperatures led to significant yield losses, as has often been the case in recent years. In addition, a pronounced negative climatic water balance during anthesis was also a contributing factor. These meteorological parameters explained 82% of the yield variability in spring barley. New strategies for spring barley production are needed to avoid further yield losses in the future. Rising temperatures due to climate change could probably allow an earlier sowing date so that ear formation and anthesis take place in a generally cooler and wetter period, as shown for 2014.

The determination of the endodormancy release and the beginning of ontogenetic development is a challenge, because these are non-observable stages. Changes in protein activity are important aspects of signal transduction. The conversion of threonine to 2-oxobutanoate is the first step towards isoleucine (Ile) biosynthesis, which promote growth and development. The reaction is catalyzed by threonine deaminase/dehydratase (TD). This study on TD activity was conducted at the experimental sweet cherry orchard at Berlin-Dahlem. Fresh (FW), dry weight (DW), water content (WC), and the specific TD activity for the cherry cultivars Summit, Karina and Regina were conducted from flower bud samples between October and April. The content of asparagine (Asn), aspartic acid (Asp), Ile, and valine (Val) were exemplarily shown for Summit. In buds of Summit and Karina, the TD activity was one week after the beginning of the ontogenetic development (t1*), significantly higher compared to samplings during endo- and ecodormancy. Such “peak” activity did not occur in the buds of Regina; TD tended for a longer time (day of year, DOY 6–48) to a higher activity, compared to the time DOY 287–350. For the date “one week after t1*”, the upregulation of TD, the markedly increase of the Ile and Val content, and the increase of the water content in the buds, all this enzymatically confirms the estimated start of the ontogenetic development (t1*) in sweet cherry buds.

The conception of “floral strips” is a strategy to provide more and different food sources for pollinators. The impact of “homogeneous” Phacelia tanacetifolia (“Phacelia”) and “heterogeneous” (flower mix) food sources on the enzyme activity of bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) and honeybees (Apis mellifera) under urban conditions has not been reported. Organisms responding to challenging environmental conditions are known to exhibit increases in oxidative stress parameters which in turn affect both physiological and metabolic parameters. A field study was conducted in Berlin-Dahlem, Germany, using the response of the “marker” enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) on food sources for assessment. SOD data is also shown from the wild bee Megachile rotundata (Fabricius 1787), obtained from three different locations in the federal state Brandenburg, Germany. The results demonstrate that the enzyme activity of SOD significantly increased in bumblebees visiting the flower mix compared to the Phacelia. The experimental approach had individual effects at the level of the species, bumblebees and honeybees, respectively. The activity of the biomarker SOD could be successfully used to assess the effects of the compositions of homogeneous and heterogeneous flower fields.

For several years, there has been a need in phenological modeling to better account for physiological processes during the winter dormancy of woody plants, which is here addressed to the sweet cherry cultivar ‘Summit’ (Prunus avium L.). This study compares three sequential phenology models (M1–M3) for the beginning of ‘Summit’ blossom in the experimental sweet cherry orchard in Berlin-Dahlem (Germany) between 2011/12–2019/20 (model development) and 2020/21–2022/23 (model validation). M1 represents an inverse modeling approach where the chilling and forcing requirements of ‘Summit’ were optimized solely from observed flowering data. In contrast, M2 and M3 are more physiologically based as they already incorporate biological knowledge, so that the model parameters were calculated directly within the specified developmental phases. Here, M2 is a two-phase model that considers experimental data for the date of endodormancy release (t1) of nine years (2011/12–2019/20) to calculate the chilling and forcing requirements. Finally, M3 is a newly developed three-phase model that additionally includes the onset of ontogenetic development (t1*) and the abscisic acid (ABA) content of ‘Summit’ flower buds during the ecodormancy phase (t1 − t1*). The results indicate that the inclusion of ABA-related heat weighting during ecodormancy significantly improves the performance of M3 compared to M1 and M2. While M1 gives satisfactory results in terms of fit and validation, it is considered physiologically unacceptable as it greatly overestimates the chilling requirement of ‘Summit’ by ignoring the ecodormancy phase. M2 accumulates too much heat during ecodormancy as it does not include control by the bud ABA content. The results highlight the need for parameters such as t1, t1*, and the bud ABA content for the physiological modeling of ‘Summit’ blossom. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to provide a pathway towards a physiologically based modeling approach.

Here we report on metabolites found in a targeted profiling of ‘Summit’ flower buds for nine years, which could be indicators for the timing of endodormancy release (t1) and beginning of ontogenetic development (t1*). Investigated metabolites included chrysin, arabonic acid, pentose acid, sucrose, abscisic acid (ABA), and abscisic acid glucose ester (ABA-GE). Chrysin and water content showed an almost parallel course between leaf fall and t1*. After ‘swollen bud’, water content raised from ~60 to ~80% at open cluster, while chrysin content decreased and lost its function as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Both parameters can be suitable indicators for t1*. Arabonic acid showed a clear increase after t1*. Pentose acid would be a suitable metabolite to identify t1 and t1*, but would not allow describing the ecodormancy phase, because of its continuously low value during this time. Sucrose reached a maximum during ecodormancy and showed a significant correlation with air temperature, which confirms its cryoprotective role in this phase. The ABA content showed maximum values during endodormancy and decreased during ecodormancy, reaching 50% of its content t1 at t1*. It appears to be the key metabolite to define the ecodormancy phase. The ABA-GE was present at all stages and phases and was much higher than the ABA content and is a readily available storage pool in cherry buds.

Five phenological models (M1-M5) were examined with respect to their suitability to calculate the beginning of apple blossom in Germany, the most important fruit crop in Western Europe. Blossoming is the most sensitive period, e.g.to frost, and determines the fruit set of the apple trees. Phenological observations and temperature data from the German Weather Service in the period 1961-2005 were used to fit these five models. For the calculations data from, 5,630 phenological and 523 temperature stations were attributed to a 10 km x 10 km grid using second order universal kriging. Model parameters were optimised on 3,672 grid points for the nationwide approach for Germany and on 148 points for 11 fruit growing regions. Root mean square errors (RMSE) between modelled and observed apple blossom data varied from 4.2 to 5.0 days for the internal and from 4.6 to 5.6 days for the external verification on the basis of phenological records from three fruit growing research centres. The very simple statistical model approach M5 had the advantage of causing the least effort to calculate the bloom date, but it never performed better than any of the best mechanistic models M1-M4. Also, the 'thermal time model' M1 and the sequential model M2 were both easy to handle which makes them a preferable choice for predictions and management decisions in apple orchards. These two models M1 and M2 are also suitable to be implemented in yield models and water budget models in order to replace the use of fixed developmental stages by dynamical calculations. The two combined chilling/forcing models M2 - a sequential model - and M3 - a parallel model - exhibited the lowest average RMSE. Both models (M2 and M3) could preferably be used to project the impact of climate change on the beginning of apple blossom, since these models can compensate a possible lack of chilling by a higher demand for forcing. The present study showed that a) all five models were able to calculate the beginning of blossom for a wider range of apple cultivars, and b) the beginning of apple blossom has moved forward since 1989 due to climate change. The successful modelling of the beginning of apple blossom can be transferred to other fruit crops, which are more sensitive to frost events such as pear, apricot, etc.

Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression that occur without changes in DNA sequence. These reversible modifications include DNA methylation, histone acetylation and RNA interference. Epigenetic changes are fundamental for the regulatory physiological processes that regulate gene activity; therefore, these changes are altered in response to environmental factors or disease states, but, in many circumstances, they are also believed to contribute to disease occurrence and progresssion. So far, studies of the epigenome have been scarce in nephrology. However, there is evidence that in the uremic milieu, several features such as inflammation, dyslipidaemia, hyperhomocysteinaema, oxidative stress as well as vitamin and nutritional deficiencies may affect the epigenome, and impact patient outcome. The present review describes the current knowledge on epigenetic alterations in the course of various kidney disease states. Although the science of epigenetics is still in its infancy, it seems that it may help elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms in uraemia, and allow novel treatment strategies to be developed. Abstract  The paper presents the results concerning the formation of a ‘barrier’ layer on AlN ceramic during its joining with copper by the Copper Direct Bonding (CDB) technique. The surface of the ceramic was modified with titanium, using various amounts of this active component. When deposited by sputtering, Ti layers were about 0.35 μm thick. The implantation doses were 1  ×  1016, 5  ×  1016, 2  ×  1017 and 1  ×  1018 ions/cm2, and the ions were accelerated by a voltage of 70 or 15 kV. The modified ceramic was joined with oxidized copper in a nitrogen atmosphere with about 1.5 ppm of oxygen using a belt-type furnace. The results of the examinations of the mechanical strength of the joints and of the microstructural and phase changes induced on the surfaces of the joints during the bonding process formed the basis for establishing the optimum conditions of modification of the AlN surface with titanium ions by introducing them just beneath the surface layer of the ceramic. The modification yielded a multiphase ‘barrier’ layer, which ensured a continuous pore-less contact between the materials being joined. The joints thus produced showed a high mechanical strength. Optimum conditions were also established for joining the AlN ceramic directly with copper by the CDB technique in a nitrogen atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the results of studies on the joining of non-oxide ceramics with copper with the use of intermediary metallic layers. AlN ceramics was covered with Mo, Mn, FeSi, Ti intermediary layers, Si3N4 ceramics – with Cu, Mn, Ti layers, and SiC ceramics – with Cr, TiCu layers. Although the individual metallic layers were synthesized under different conditions, all the structures contained barrier layers formed during the synthesis process. With the AlN and Si3N4 ceramics, the barrier layer was composed of TiN, which was well wetted by the metallic and oxide phases. With the SiC ceramics, the role of the barrier layer was played by the Ti3SiC2 phase. The thickness of the barrier layers of both types (TiN, Ti3SiC) was about 1 μm. They were well wetted by the metallic solders, coherent with the ceramic surface, and, within the brazed multi-layer joints, they constituted a continuous microstructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Models used to predict the onset of fruit tree blossom under changed climate conditions should be physiologically based as much as possible. Pure optimized phenology models carry the risk of unrealistic predictions due to a misinterpretation of metabolic processes. This was the motivation determining the relevant phases for chill and heat accumulation, which induces cherry blossom (cv. Summit). Investigations are based on 8 years of observational and analytical data, as well as on controlled experiments. For ‘Summit’ buds, to be released from endodormancy, 43 chill portions from 1 September are necessary. After endodormancy release (t1), on average on 30 November, no further chilling is required, because no correlation between chill accumulation during ecodormancy and the subsequent heat accumulation until ‘Summit’ blossom exist. The declining amount of heat, which induces cherry blossom after t1—shown in several forcing experiments—seems to be the result of the declining bud’s abscisic acid (ABA) content, up to ~50% until the beginning of ontogenetic development. Shortly after t1, when the bud’s ABA content is high, a huge amount of heat is necessary to induce cherry blossom under controlled conditions. Heat requirement reduces during ecodormancy along with the reduction in the ABA content. According to these findings, plant development during ecodormancy is suppressed by low temperatures in the orchard and a slowly declining bud’s ABA content. These results should lead to a better consideration of the ecodormancy phase in phenology models.

Winter dormancy is still a “black box” in phenological models, because it evades simple observation. This study presents the first step in the identification of suitable metabolites which could indicate the timing and length of dormancy phases for the sweet cherry cultivar ‘Summit’. Global metabolite profiling detected 445 named metabolites in flower buds, which can be assigned to different substance groups such as amino acids, carbohydrates, phytohormones, lipids, nucleotides, peptides and some secondary metabolites. During the phases of endo- and ecodormancy, the energy metabolism in the form of glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle was shut down to a minimum. However, the beginning of ontogenetic development was closely related to the up-regulation of the carbohydrate metabolism and thus to the generation of energy for the growth and development of the sweet cherry buds. From the 445 metabolites found in cherry buds, seven were selected which could be suitable markers for the ecodormancy phase, whose duration is limited by the date of endodormancy release (t1) and the beginning of ontogenetic development (t1*). With the exception of abscisic acid (ABA), which has been proven to control bud dormancy, all of these metabolites show nearly constant intensity during this phase.

Temperament is a key factor in early development and predicts several key developmental outcomes. The ability to capture temperament in a variety of settings and ages is thus increasingly useful. Recent work has demonstrated the utility, reliability, and validity of thin-slice assessments in which brief snapshots of children's behavior are used to make inferences about general traits (Tackett et al., 2016). Thin-slice has been effective for assessing personality in older children (over 7-years; Tackett et al., 2016, 2017) and preschoolers 3-6 years old (Whalen et al., 2021) when engaging in lab tasks or clinical assessments. However, no work has examined the use of thin-slice for temperament in younger, typically developing infants/toddlers during lab-based tasks. The present study aims to test a downward extension of a modified thin-slice approach to assess temperament using archived videos of 516 infants/toddlers ( n female = 255; M age = 27.51 months, Range age = 17-47 months). Children were originally recruited from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds across the central United States and completed a short play session, which incorporated standard language and cognition tasks that were not designed to elicit temperament; caregivers also reported their children's temperament using the Early Child Behavior Questionnaire (Putnam & Rothbart, 2006). Naive raters scored the videos using a modification of the thin-slice approach. We find evidence of good reliability and validity for temperament scores using this approach suggesting thin-slice assessments are another method for measuring temperament in infants and toddlers. Systemic sclerosis is a rare autoimmune condition leading to incurable complications. Therefore fast and precise diagnosis is crucial to prevent patient death and to maintain quality of life. Unfortunately, currently known biomarkers do not meet this need. To address this problem researchers use diverse approaches to elucidate the underlying aberrations. One of the methods applied is metabolomics. This modern technique enables a comprehensive assessment of multiple compound concentrations simultaneously. As it has been gaining popularity, we found it necessary to summarize metabolomic studies presented so far in a narrative review. We found 11 appropriate articles. All of the researchers found significant differences between patients and control groups, whereas the reported findings were highly inconsistent. Additionally, we have found the investigated groups in most studies were scarcely described, and the inclusion/exclusion approach was diverse. Introduction: Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by lymphocytic infiltrates in the exocrine glands. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is suggested to be more frequent among SS patients than in the general population. The aim of this study was to seek associations between the CTS and the laboratory and clinical findings of SS patients., Methods: Fifty patients diagnosed with primary SS (pSS) were examined. Clinical evaluation by a rheumatologist and electrophysiological studies were conducted. Data on laboratory tests results was collected. Control group consisted of 50 sex and age-matched individuals with osteoarthritis (OA)., Results: Out of 50 patients in the study group 27 (54%) were diagnosed with CTS. The prevalence of CTS among 50 individuals in the control group was 8%. Among pSS patients with CTS the joint involvement was not more common than in those from the non-CTS group [15 vs. 13 (p = 0.945)]. There was an expected difference in sleep disorders [18 vs. 9 (p = 0.012)] and paresthesia [23 vs. 13 (p = 0.024)]. The major finding was a significant difference in elevated beta2-microglobulin (B2MG) [23 vs. 13 (p = 0.024)]. Other studied factors, suggested in the literature as significant in the pSS-related neuropathy, were not statistically different between the groups., Conclusion: Our study confirms that CTS is more prevalent among pSS patients than in the general population and suggests that a new approach is required towards the pathogenesis of this phenomenon. Implant abutments are essential components of implant prosthetic restorations. The golden standard for abutment material is titanium; however, due to its properties, the esthetic result can be compromised. The most popular esthetic material alternatives are one- and two-piece zirconia. The study aimed to answer the questions of whether zirconia abutments can be used interchangeably with titanium in both anterior and posterior regions and how aging of the abutment affects durability. For this study, an electronic search of MEDLINE (PubMed) and Scopus (Embase) was conducted. The PRISMA guidelines were followed, and a systematic review was registered with PROSPERO. The search revealed 4031 results, of which 17 studies were selected. The strongest material for abutments is titanium, closely followed by two-piece zirconia. One-piece zirconia abutments were the weakest. The cyclic loading above 1,000,000 cycles decreased the fracture resistance of the abutments. Differences in implant diameter, angulation, and restoration affected the fracture strength of all compared materials. The main mode of failure for titanium abutments was screw bending or screw fracture. One-piece zirconia most often presented catastrophic failure with internal hexagon fracture below the implant neck. Two-piece zirconia exhibits a combination of failure modes. Two-piece zirconia abutments may be suitable for use in the posterior region, given their comparable fracture resistance to titanium abutments. Despite the fact that one-piece zirconia is capable of withstanding forces that exceed those exerted during mastication, it is recommended that it be employed primarily in the anterior dentition due to its propensity for unfavorable failure modes.

(1) Background: Impaired nutritional status in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is prevalent. (2) Objective: This study aimed to identify pre-cachexia and malnutrition in SSc patients and to estimate the effectiveness of a high-protein oral nutritional supplement (ONS) in improving their nutritional status. (3) Materials and methods: The SSc population comprised 56 patients and a control group of 49 healthy persons. After a baseline clinical evaluation, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and laboratory tests, SSc patients were divided into well-nourished, pre-cachectic, and malnourished categories. SSc patients with a nutritional disbalance received a high-protein ONS once daily for 3 months. Patients were reassessed at 3 and 12 months after inclusion in the study. (4) Results: SSc patients, in comparison to the control group, had a significantly lower seven-point SGA value [6(0) vs. 7(1), p < 0.001)], lean tissue mass [LTM, 35.1 (10.5) vs. 40.1 (10.10), p = 0.008], and lean tissue index [LTI, 13.5 (3) vs. 14.9 (4), p = 0.009]. Of the 56 SSc patients, 40 (71.4%) were well nourished, 5 (8.9%) had pre-cachexia, and 11 (19.7%) were malnourished. A high-protein ONS in the pre-cachexia group stabilized the SGA value, anthropometric measurements, and BIA after 3 and 12 months. In malnourished patients, it significantly improved the SGA value [5(0) vs. 6(0), p = 0.002], LTI [12.1 (2.1) vs. 12.7 (3.2), p = 0.021] and LTM [31.1 (7.7) vs. 35.1 (9.1), p = 0.021], and that effect remained stable at 12 months. (5) Conclusion: Malnutrition is a common complication of SSc that can be improved with nutritional intervention.

Background: Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitides (AAV) is a group of systemic necrotizing small vessel autoimmune diseases, with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) being the two most common. The co-existence of AAV with different immune-mediated diseases (autoimmune disesases - AID) might affect the clinical presentation of the primary disease. The purpose of the study was to assess the co-existence of AAV with AID and to investigate whether it affects the characteristics and the course of AAV., Methods: A retrospective single-center study was performed to identify patients with a diagnosis of MPA or GPA and concomitant AID, and to investigate their clinical features and characteristics. The group consisted of consecutive unselected AAV patients treated at a large university-based hospital, since 1988 with follow-up until 2022., Results: Among 284 patients diagnosed either with GPA (232) or MPA (52), 40 (14,1%) had co-existing AIDs. The most frequent were: Hashimoto thyroiditis (16 cases), rheumatoid arthritis (8 cases), followed by psoriasis (6 cases), pernicious anemia (3 cases), and alopecia (3 cases). Patients with autoimmune comorbidities had a significantly longer time between the onset of symptoms and the diagnosis (26 vs. 11 months, p < 0.001). Laryngeal involvement (20.0% vs. 9.0%, p = 0,05), peripheral nervous system disorders (35.0% vs. 13.9%, p < 0.001), and neoplasms (20.0% vs. 8.6%, p = 0,044) were more common in patients with AID comorbidities, compared to subjects without AID. In contrast, renal involvement (45.0% vs. 70.9%, p = 0.001) and nodular lung lesions (27.5% vs. 47.5%, p = 0.044) were significantly less frequent in patients with co-morbidities. Following EUVAS criteria, patients with autoimmune co-morbidities had a generalized form of the disease without organ involvement (52.5% vs. 27.2%, p = 0.007), while the others had a higher percentage of generalized form with organ involvement (38.3% vs. 20.0%, p = 0.007)., Conclusions: The coexistence of AAV with different autoimmune diseases is not common, but it might affect the clinical course of the disease. Polyautoimmunity prolonged the time to diagnosis, but the AAV course seemed to be milder. Particular attention should be paid to the increased risk of cancer in these patients. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common potentially pathogenic bacteria that may asymptomatically colonize many sites of healthy carriers. Non-nasal carriage, especially in the oral cavity, and its role in transmitting antimicrobial-resistant S. aureus strains in the healthcare community, is poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of S. aureus in both oral and nasal cavities among preclinical dentistry students. A total of 264 oral and nasal swabs were taken from 132 participants, and all specimens were cultured using standard diagnostic procedures and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (EUCAST). The prevalence of S. aureus exclusively in the nasal (11.4%) or oral (9.1%) cavity was comparable, while concurrent oral and nasal carriage was present in 27.3% of participants. Although antibiotic resistance rates observed in both oral and nasal isolates were similar (ranging from 2.7% to 95.5%), 16.7% of carriers exhibited distinct antibiotic resistance profiles between oral and nasal isolates. Three (2.7%) methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) were isolated from the mouth and nose but multidrug resistance (27.3%) was more frequent in the oral than in the nasal isolates: 34% and 21.1%, respectively. This study demonstrated that preclinical dentistry students have a similar rate of oral S. aureus carriage as the nasal carriage rate, and that the oral cavity can be colonized by antimicrobial-resistant strains that do not originate from the nose. Consequently, the oral cavity seems to be an unjustly overlooked body site in screening for S. aureus carriage.

Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) ferritic steels are promising materials for the nuclear power sector. This paper presents the results of a study on the sintering process using the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique, focusing on ODS ferritic steel powders with different contents (0.3 and 0.6 vol.%) of Y 2 O 3 . The novelty lies in the analysis of the effect of pre-annealing treatment on powders previously prepared by mechanical alloying on the microstructure, mechanical, and thermal properties of the sinters. Using the SPS method, it was possible to obtain well-densified sinters with a relative density above 98%. Pre-annealing the powders resulted in an increase in the relative density of the sinters and a slight increase in their thermal conductivity. The use of low electron energies during SEM analysis allowed for a fairly good visualization of the reinforcing oxides uniformly dispersed in the matrix. Analysis of the Mössbauer spectroscopy results revealed that pre-annealing induces local atomic rearrangements within the solid solution. In addition, there was an additional spectral component, indicating the formation of a Cr-based paramagnetic phase. The ODS material with a higher Y 2 O 3 content showed increased Vickers hardness values, as well as increased Young's modulus and nanohardness, as determined by nanoindentation tests.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency is common in patients with rheumatic diseases. Pernicious anemia is a well-known cause, but recent reports suggest that autoimmune-derived deficiency may not be limited to this cause alone. Symptoms of low vitamin B12 concentration are often deceptive, mimicking and overlapping with symptoms of other conditions. Neuropsychiatric manifestations, anemia, and fatigue are frequently attributed to a rheumatic disease without further evaluation. In this study, we present three cases of patients with neuropathic pain, depression, fatigue, and muscle weakness, initially attributed to a rheumatic disease, which almost completely resolved after implementing vitamin B12 supplementation. Furthermore, we provide an overview of current scientific reports regarding the potential use of cobalamin in rheumatology. Treatment of pain and neuropathy, often very challenging in long-lasting rheumatic diseases, can be more effective after a course of vitamin B12, even when no apparent deficiency is detected in laboratory tests. Considering recent research demonstrating vitamin B12's nerve-protecting properties, we recommend that physicians should assess vitamin B12 levels early in the diagnostic process of rheumatic diseases. Radiological procedures utilising intravascular contrast media (ICM) are fundamental to modern medicine, enhancing diagnostics and treatment in diverse medical fields. However, the application of ICM has been constrained in patients with compromised kidney function due to perceived nephrotoxic risks, called contrast-induced nephropathy or contrastinduced acute kidney injury. Historical evidence marked ICM as a possible contributor to kidney damage. This led to restrictive guidelines advocating limited ICM use in patients with impaired renal function, preventing crucial radiographic interventions in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease. Recent advances challenge these traditional views. In particular, no direct causal relationship has been confirmed between contrast admi-nistration and elevated serum creatinine concentrations in humans. Furthermore, contemporary research models and meta-analyses do not associate AKI with contrast usage. Reduced graphene oxide, due to its structure, exhibits anisotropic properties, which are particularly evident in electrical and thermal conductivity. This study focuses on examining the influence of reduced graphene oxide in silicon carbide on these properties in directions perpendicular and parallel to the direction of the aligned rGO flakes in produced composites. Reduced graphene oxide is characterized by very high in-plane thermal and electrical conductivity. It was observed that the addition of rGO increases thermal conductivity from 64 W/mK (reference sample) up to 98 W/mK for a SiC-3 wt.% rGO composite in the direction parallel to the rGO flakes. In the perpendicular direction, the values were slightly lower, reaching up to 84 W/mK. The difference observed in electrical conductivity values is more significant and is 1-2 orders of magnitude higher for the flakes' alignment direction. The measured electrical conductivity increased from 1.2710 -8 S/m for the reference SiC sinter up to 1.55 × 10 -5 S/m and 1.2410 -4 S/m for the composites with 3 wt.% rGO for the perpendicular and parallel directions, respectively. This represents an enhancement of four orders of magnitude, with a clearly visible influence of the anisotropy of the rGO. The composite's enhanced electrical and thermal conductivity make it particularly attractive for electronic devices and high-power applications.

The interest in the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique has continuously increased over the last few years. This article shows the possibility of the development of an SPS device used for material processing and synthesis in both scientific and industrial applications and aims to present manufacturing methods and the versatility of an SPS device, presenting examples of processing Arc-Melted- (half-Heusler, cobalt triantimonide) and Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS)-synthesized semiconductor (bismuth telluride) materials. The SPS system functionality development is presented, the purpose of which was to broaden the knowledge of the nature of SPS processes. This approach enabled the precise design of material sintering processes and also contributed to increasing the repeatability and accuracy of sintering conditions.

Background: Improving the health outcomes of populations of individuals through population health management requires the use of electronic health records that can exchange real-time digital information using an accurate and complete shared care record that is accessible to health care providers, services, and patients., Objective: The aims of this study were to understand end users' (health care providers) experiences, attitudes, and insights using current electronic health records; their expectations of what is required to establish a shared care record; and how they anticipate adapting to the use of a shared care record in daily practice. This work is the result of a quality improvement initiative deemed not to require ethics approval according to the Western research ethics board checklist., Methods: Clinicians were contacted using voluntary response sampling and interviewed via Zoom (Zoom Video Communications) between June 2022 and July 2022. The participants were from various health care sectors and at various stages of career development., Results: Overall, adaptation to the use of a shared care record was viewed positively by health care providers, highlighting the benefits of a centralized, shared, and accessible location for real-time data, promoting patient continuity of care. The main concerns included the privacy, confidentiality, and security of the record along with patients' ability to interpret their own medical information found in a patient portal. Background: Richter transformation (RT) is the development of aggressive lymphoma in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). This rare disease is characterised by dismal prognosis. In recent years, there has been a deeper understanding of RT molecular pathogenesis, and disruptions of apoptosis (TP53) and proliferation (CDKN2A, MYC, NOTCH1) has been described as typical aberrations in RT., Results: A single-institution cohort of 33 RT patients were investigated by karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization and single nucleotide polymorphism/copy number (CN) arrays. Most of RTs were typically manifested by diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified, among the remaining cases one was classified as high-grade B-cell lymphoma with 11q aberrations. The most frequent alterations (40-60% of cases) were represented by MYC rearrangement/gain, deletions of TP53 and CDKN2A, IGH rearrangement and 13q14 deletion. Several other frequent lesions included losses of 14q24.1-q32.33, 7q31.33-q36.3, and gain of 5q35.2. Analysis of 13 CLL/SLL-RT pairs showed that RT arised from the CLL/SLL by acquiring of 10 ~ 12 cytogenetic or CN lesions/case, but without acquisition of loss of heterozygosity regions. Our result affirmed the higher genetic complexity in RT than CLL/SLL and confirmed the linear features of RT clonal evolution as predominant., Conclusions: Cytogenomic profile was concordant with the literature data, however the role of IGH rearrangement, 14q deletion and 5q35.2 gain need to be explored. The presented study aims to assess the mechanical behaviour of the anterior abdominal wall based on an in vivo experiment on humans. Full-field measurement of abdominal wall displacement during changes of intra-abdominal pressure is performed using a digital image correlation (DIC) system. Continuous measurement in time enables the observation of changes in the strain field during breathing. The understanding of the mechanical behaviour of a living human abdominal wall is important for the proper design of surgical meshes used for ventral hernia repair, which was also a motivation for the research presented below. The research refers to the strain field of a loaded abdominal wall and presents the evolution of principal strains and their directions in the case of 12 subjects, 8 male and 4 female. Peritoneal dialysis procedure allows for the measurement of intra-abdominal pressure after fluid introduction. High variability among patients is observed, also in terms of principal strain direction. Subjects exhibit intra-abdominal pressure of values from 11 to 21 cmH 2 O. Objectives: The increasing trend in chronic kidney disease (CKD) has occurred in parallel with the increased prevalence of obesity and diabetes type 2. The relationship between a reduction in body mass and protein intake in diabetic nephropathy (DN) has not been adequately understood. This study aimed to determine whether dietary intervention in an adult with DN is associated with decreasing proteinuria or changes in kidney function over six months., Methods: The study included 120 patients with DN, consecutively admitted to a dietitian from a Kidney Disease Clinic. Patients were classified into two groups: a reduction diet or a normal calorie diet, both with 0.8 g of protein/kg of ideal body weight/day. Anthropometric and laboratory assessments were done before and after observation., Results: After six months, in the study group of patients on a reducing diet, a decrease in body mass, body mass index (BMI) and stabilization of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were observed. There was also a significant correlation between the time of diabetes diagnosis and eGFR and creatinine (R Spearman=-0.24 and 0.3, respectively; p=0.05). There were no other significant associations between body mass, BMI, albuminuria, eGFR, or creatinine., Conclusions: The study shows that obesity is a common comorbid disease in patients with DN and that dietary intervention is associated with a significant reduction in body mass and stabilization of eGFR in these patients.

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting are defined as the most common of side effects of treatment and, at the same time, are very difficult to accept for patients', frequently causing changes in the therapy regimen, significantly reducing its effectiveness. Thus, an antiemetic prophylactic is essential to the provision of such a therapy for the patient. Pharmacotherapy often includes various drugs, including antiemetics, with the administration of such drugs by injection through two separate catheters being the preferred method. However, the co-administration of drugs and parenteral nutrition admixtures (PNAs) requires the consideration of compatibility, stability and potential negative interactions. To meet the purposes of clinical pharmacy, a compatibility test of ondansetron, dexamethasone and hydrocortisone with paediatric PNAs was conducted. PNAs differ in the composition of amino acid source (Primene ® or Aminoplasmal Paed ® 10%) and the type of injectable lipid emulsion (Lipidem ® 200 mg/mL, Clinoleic ® 20%, SMOFlipid ® 200 mg/mL, Intralipid ® 20%). An in vitro evaluation was performed in a static way as a simulated co-administration through a Y-site. The drug PNA ratios were determined based on the extreme infusion rates contained in the characteristics of medicinal products. All calculations were performed for a hypothetical patient aged 7 years weighing 24 kg. As a result of this study, it can be concluded that all tested PNAs showed the required stability in the range of parameters such as pH, osmolality, turbidity, zeta potential, MDD and homogeneity. The co-administration of antiemetic drugs does not adversely affect lipid emulsion stability. This combination was consistently compatible during the evaluation period.

(1) Background: Peri-implantitis is a multi-factorial disease with an inflammatory background that occurs in both soft and hard tissues surrounding implants. In recent years, the understanding of the cellular, molecular and genetic background of peri-implantitis has broadened. This study aims to summarize the currently available articles on the subject and highlight the most recent advances over the last 20 years. (2) Methods: For this study, the Embase and PubMed libraries were searched using the keywords: ("peri-implantitis" AND "cytokine" OR "genetics" OR "cellular") and ("peri-implantitis" AND "cytokine" OR "genetics" OR "cellular" AND "risk factors"). The search revealed a total of 3013 articles (992 from PubMed, 2021 from Embase). Following screening of the titles and abstracts and full-text reads, 55 articles were included. (3) Results: In peri-implantitis IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, MMP-8 and their genetic variations appear to be the most important cytokines in relation to not only pathogenesis, but also their potential diagnostic capabilities. Epithelial and inflammatory cells, along with those of the bone lineage, are prime cellular elements found in peri-implantitis. (4) Conclusions: A wide array of cells stand behind peri-implantitis, as well as cytokines and their genetic variations that take part in the process. However, the growing interest in this topic has led to the introduction of specific new diagnostic tools to enable a better understanding of patients' responses to treatment and, in turn, to even enable prediction of the risk of developing peri-implant disease.

The importance of studying civilization diseases manifests itself in the impact of changing lifestyles, on the number of deaths and causes of death. Technology transfer plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of these diseases. Through this, it is possible to transfer new treatments and diagnostics to clinics and hospitals more quickly and effectively, which leads to better healthcare for patients. Technology transfer can also aid in the development of new drugs and therapies that can be effective in the treatment of civilization diseases. The paper aims to evaluate the technology transfer process in the field of civilization diseases, using COVID-19 as an example of a pandemic that requires quick development and transfer of technology. To achieve the assumed goal, we propose a multivariate synthetic ratio in the field of civilization diseases (SMTT-Synthetic Measure of Technology Transfer) to analyze data from the Global Data database. We used sub-measures like SMTT&#95;value (Synthetic Measure of Technology Transfer&#95;value) and SMTT&#95;quantity (Synthetic Measure of Technology Transfer&#95;quantity) to measure technology transfer and put the data into a graph. Our analysis focuses on 14 diseases over a period of 10 years (2012-2021) and includes nine forms of technology transfer, allowing us to create a tool for analysing the process in multiple dimensions. Our results show that COVID-19 is similar in terms of technology transfer to diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and breast cancer, even though data for COVID-19 is available for only 2 years.
