For a sample of $\sim$80 local ($0.02 \leq z \leq 0.1$) Seyfert-1 galaxies with high-quality long-slit Keck spectra and spatially-resolved stellar-velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\star}$) measurements, we study the profile of the [OIII]$\lambda$5007A emission line to test the validity of using its width as a surrogate for $\sigma_{\star}$. Such an approach has often been used in the literature, since it is difficult to measure $\sigma_{\star}$ for type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) due to the AGN continuum outshining the stellar-absorption lines. Fitting the [OIII] line with a single Gaussian or Gauss-Hermite polynomials overestimates $\sigma_{\star}$ by 50-100%. When line asymmetries from non-gravitational gas motion are excluded in a double Gaussian fit, the average ratio between the core [OIII] width ($\sigma_{\rm {[OIII],D}}$) and $\sigma_{\star}$ is $\sim$1, but with individual data points off by up to a factor of two. The resulting black-hole-mass-$\sigma_{\rm {[OIII],D}}$ relation scatters around that of quiescent galaxies and reverberation-mapped AGNs. However, a direct comparison between $\sigma_{\star}$ and $\sigma_{\rm {[OIII],D}}$ shows no close correlation, only that both quantities have the same range, average and standard deviation, probably because they feel the same gravitational potential. The large scatter is likely due to the fact that line profiles are a luminosity-weighted average, dependent on the light distribution and underlying kinematic field. Within the range probed by our sample (80-260 km s$^{-1}$), our results strongly caution against the use of [OIII] width as a surrogate for $\sigma_{\star}$ on an individual basis. Even though our sample consists of radio-quiet AGNs, FIRST radio-detected objects have, on average, a $\sim$10% larger [OIII] core width.

IR spectroscopy in the range 12-230 micron with the SPace IR telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) will reveal the physical processes that govern the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes through cosmic time, bridging the gap between the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the new generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) at shorter wavelengths and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) at longer wavelengths. SPICA, with its 2.5-m telescope actively-cooled to below 8K, will obtain the first spectroscopic determination, in the mid-IR rest-frame, of both the star-formation rate and black hole accretion rate histories of galaxies, reaching lookback times of 12 Gyr, for large statistically significant samples. Densities, temperatures, radiation fields and gas-phase metallicities will be measured in dust-obscured galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN), sampling a large range in mass and luminosity, from faint local dwarf galaxies to luminous quasars in the distant Universe. AGN and starburst feedback and feeding mechanisms in distant galaxies will be uncovered through detailed measurements of molecular and atomic line profiles. SPICA's large-area deep spectrophotometric surveys will provide mid-IR spectra and continuum fluxes for unbiased samples of tens of thousands of galaxies, out to redshifts of z~6. Furthermore, SPICA spectroscopy will uncover the most luminous galaxies in the first few hundred million years of the Universe, through their characteristic dust and molecular hydrogen features.

We present the results of an optical spectroscopic monitoring program targeting NGC 5548 as part of a larger multiwavelength reverberation mapping campaign. The campaign spanned 6 months and achieved an almost daily cadence with observations from five ground-based telescopes. The Hβ and He ii λ4686 broad emission-line light curves lag that of the 5100 +-optical continuum by 4.17+0.36-0.36 and 0.79+0.35-0.34 days, respectively. The Hβ lag relative to the 1158 ultraviolet continuum light curve measured by the Hubble Space Telescope is ∼50% longer than that measured against the optical continuum, and the lag difference is consistent with the observed lag between the optical and ultraviolet continua. This suggests that the characteristic radius of the broad-line region is ∼50% larger than the value inferred from optical data alone. We also measured velocity-resolved emission-line lags for Hβ and found a complex velocity-lag structure with shorter lags in the line wings, indicative of a broad-line region dominated by Keplerian motion. The responses of both the Hβ and He ii emission lines to the driving continuum changed significantly halfway through the campaign, a phenomenon also observed for C iv, Lyα, He ii(+O iii]), and Si iv(+O iv]) during the same monitoring period. Finally, given the optical luminosity of NGC 5548 during our campaign, the measured Hβ lag is a factor of five shorter than the expected value implied by the R BLR-L AGN relation based on the past behavior of NGC 5548.

We extend our previous model-independent determination of the intergalactic background light, based purely on galaxy survey data, out to a wavelength of 5 μm. Our approach enables us to constrain the range of photon densities, based on the uncertainties from observationally determined luminosity densities and colors. We further determine a 68% confidence upper and lower limit on the opacity of the universe to γ-rays up to energies of 1.6/(1 + z) TeV. A comparison of our lower limit redshift-dependent opacity curves to the opacity limits derived from the results of both ground-based air Cerenkov telescope and Fermi-LAT observations of PKS 1424+240 allows us to place a new upper limit on the redshift of this source, independent of IBL modeling. © 2014. To investigate the black hole mass versus stellar velocity dispersion (MBH-σ*) relation of active galaxies, we measured the velocity dispersions of a sample of local Seyfert 1 galaxies, for which we have recently determined black hole masses using reverberation mapping. For most objects, stellar velocity dispersions were measured from high signal-to-noise ratio optical spectra centered on the Ca II triplet region (∼ 8500 Å), obtained at the Keck, Palomar, and Lick Observatories. For two objects, in which the Ca II triplet region was contaminated by nuclear emission, the measurement was based on high-quality H-band spectra obtained with the OH-Suppressing Infrared Imaging Spectrograph at the Keck-II telescope. Combining our new measurements with data from the literature, we assemble a sample of 24 active galaxies with stellar velocity dispersions and reverberation-based black hole mass measurements in the range of black hole mass 106< MBH/M⊙< 109. We use this sample to obtain reverberation-mapping constraints on the slope and intrinsic scatter of the MBH-σ*relation of active galaxies. Assuming a constant virial coefficient f for the reverberation-mapping black hole masses, we find a slope β = 3.55 ± 0.60 and the intrinsic scatter σint= 0.43 ± 0.08 dex in the relation log(MBH/M⊙) = α + β log(σ*/200kms-1), which are consistent with those found for quiescent galaxies. We derive an updated value of the virial coefficient f by finding the value which places the reverberation masses in best agreement with the MBH-σ*relation of quiescent galaxies; using the quiescent MBH-σ*relation determined by Gültekin etal., we find log f = 0.72+0.09-0.10with an intrinsic scatter of 0.44 ± 0.07 dex. No strong correlations between f and parameters connected to the physics of accretion (such as the Eddington ratio or line-shape measurements) are found. The uncertainty of the virial coefficient remains one of the main sources of the uncertainty in black hole mass determinations using reverberation mapping, and therefore also in single-epoch spectroscopic estimates of black hole masses in active galaxies. © 2010 The American Astronomical Society.

After recent sensitivity upgrades at the Keck Interferometer (KI), systematic interferometric 2 μm studies of the innermost dust in nearby Seyfert nuclei are within observational reach. Here, we present the analysis of new interferometric data of NGC4151, discussed in context of the results from recent dust reverberation, spectro-photometric, and interferometric campaigns. The complete data set gives a complex picture, in particular the measured visibilities from now three different nights appear to be rather insensitive to the variation of the nuclear luminosity. KI data alone indicate two scenarios: the K-band emission is either dominated to ∼ 90% by size scales smaller than 30 mpc, which falls short of any dust reverberation measurement in NGC4151 and of theoretical models of circum-nuclear dust distributions. Or contrary, and more likely, the K-band continuum emission is dominated by hot dust (≳1300 K) at linear scales of about 50 mpc. The linear size estimate varies by a few tens of percent depending on the exact morphology observed. Our interferometric, deprojected centro-nuclear dust radius estimate of 55 ± 5mpc is roughly consistent with the earlier published expectations from circum-nuclear, dusty radiative transfer models, and spectro-photometric modeling. However, our data do not support the notion that the dust emission size scale follows the nuclear variability of NGC4151 as an R dust L 0.5nuc scaling relation. Instead variable nuclear activity, lagging, and variable dust response to illumination changes need to be combined to explain the observations. © 2010. The American Astronomical Society.

We report the discovery of a z ∼ 9 Lyman break galaxy candidate, selected from the NICMOS Parallel Imaging Survey as a J-dropout with J 110 - H160 = 1.7. Spitzer/IRAC photometry reveals that the galaxy has a blue H160 - 3.6 μm color and a spectral break between 3.6 and 4.5 μm. We interpret this break as the Balmer break and derive a best-fit photometric redshift of z ∼ 9. We use Monte Carlo simulations to test the significance of this photometric redshift, and we show that there is a 96% probability of z ≥ 7. We estimate that the lower limit to the comoving number density of such galaxies at z ∼ 9 is ø > 3.8 × 10-6 Mpc-3. If the high redshift of this galaxy is confirmed, this will indicate that the luminous end of the rest-frame UV luminosity function has not evolved substantially from z ∼ 9 to z ∼ 3. Still, some small degeneracy remains between this z ∼ 9 model and models at z ∼ 2-3; deep optical imaging (reaching IAB ∼ 29) can rule out the lower z models. © 2008. The two-dimensional (2D) distribution and kinematics of the molecular, ionized, and highly ionized gas in the nuclear regions of Seyfert 1 galaxies have been measured using high spatial resolution (∼0.09'') near-infrared spectroscopy from NIRSPEC with adaptive optics on the Keck telescope. Molecular hydrogen, H2, is detected in all nine Seyfert 1 galaxies and, in the majority of galaxies, has a spatially resolved flux distribution. In contrast, the narrow component of the Brγ emission has a distribution consistent with that of the K-band continuum. In general, the kinematics of the molecular hydrogen is consistent with thin disk rotation, with a velocity gradient of over 100 km s-1 measured across the central 0.5'' in three galaxies, and a similar gradient across the central 1.5'' in an additional two galaxies. The kinematics of Brγ is in agreement with the H2 rotation, except that in all four cases the central 0.5'' is either blue- or redshifted by more than 75 km s-1. The highly ionized gas, measured with the [Ca VIII] and [Si VII] coronal lines, is spatially and kinematically consistent with Brγ in the central 0.5''. In addition, the velocity dispersion of both the coronal and Bry emission is greater than that of H2 (by 1.3-2.0 times), suggesting that both originate from gas that is located closer to the nucleus than the H2 line emitting gas. Dynamical models have been fitted to the 2D H2 kinematics, taking into account the stellar mass distribution, the emission line flux distribution, and the point spread function. For NGC 3227 the modeling indicates a black hole mass of M BH = 2.0-4.0+1.0 × 107 M ⊙, and for NGC 4151 MBH = 3.0-2.2+0.75 × 107 M⊙. In NGC 7469 the best-fit model gives MBH < 5.0 × 107 M ⊙. In all three galaxies, modeling suggests a near face-on disk inclination angle, which is consistent with the unification theory of active galaxies. The direct black hole mass estimates verify that masses determined from technique of reverberation mapping are accurate to within a factor of 3 with no additional systematic errors. © 2008. We have selected 14 J-dropout Lyman break galaxy (LBG) candidates with J110 - H160 ≥ 2.5 from the NICMOS Parallel Imaging Survey. This survey consists of 135 arcmin2 of imaging in 228 independent sight lines, reaching average 5 σ sensitivities of J 110 = 25.8 and H160 = 25.6 (AB). Distinguishing these candidates from dust-reddened star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2-3 is difficult and will require longer wavelength observations. We consider the likelihood that any J-dropout LBGs exist in this survey and find that if L*z= 9.5 is significantly brighter than L*z=6 (a factor of 4), then a few J-dropout LBGs are likely. A similar increase in luminosity has been suggested by Eyles et al. and Yan et al., but the magnitude of this increase is uncertain. © 2007. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.

We test the evolution of the correlation between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion (MBH-σ), using a carefully selected sample of 14 Seyfert 1 galaxies at z = 0.36±0.01. We measure velocity dispersion from stellar absorption lines around Mg b (5175 Å) and Fe (5270 Å) using high-S/N Keck spectra and estimate black hole mass from the Hβ line width and the optical luminosity at 5100 Å, based on the empirically calibrated photoionization method. We find a significant offset from the local relation, in the sense that velocity dispersions were smaller for given black hole masses at z = 0.36 than locally. We investigate various sources of systematic uncertainties and find that those cannot account for the observed offset. The measured offset is Δlog MBH= 0.62 ±0.10±0.25; i.e., Δlog σ = 0.15±0.03±0. 06, where the error bars include a random component and an upper limit to the systematics. At face value, this result implies a substantial growth of bulges in the last 4 Gyr, assuming that the local MBH-σrelation is the universal evolutionary endpoint. Along with two samples of active galaxies with consistently determined black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion taken from the literature, we quantify the observed evolution with the best-fit linear relation:Δlog MBH= (1-66±0.43)z + (0.04±0.09) with respect to the local relationship of Tremaine and coworkers, and Δlog MBH= (1-55 ±0.46)z + (0.01 ±0.12) with respect to that of Ferrarese. This result is consistent with the growth of black holes predating the final growth of bulges at these mass scales (〈σ〉 = 170 km s-1). © 2006. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.

We present the properties of Ly Alpha emitters (LAEs) at z = 5.7 in the Subaru Deep Field. A photometric sample of 89 LAE candidates is constructed from narrow-band (NB816) data down to NB816 = 26.0 (AB) in a continuous 725 arcmin^2 area. Spectra of 39 objects satisfying the photometric selection criteria for LAEs were obtained with Subaru and Keck II Telescopes, among which 28 were confirmed LAEs, one was a nearby galaxy, and eight were unclassified. We also obtained spectra of another 24 NB816-excess objects in the field, identifying six additional LAEs. We find that the Ly Alpha luminosity function derived from the photometric sample is reproduced well by a Schechter function with L* = (7.9+3.0-2.2) x 10^42 erg/s and phi* = (6.3+3.0-2.0) x 10^-4 Mpc^-3 for alpha = -1.5 (fixed) over the whole luminosity range of L ~= 3x10^42 - 3x10^43 erg/s. We then measure rest-frame Ly Alpha equivalent widths (EWs) for the confirmed LAEs, to find that the median among the 28 objects satisfying the photometric selection criteria is W_0^i = 233 A. We infer that 30% - 40% of LAEs at z=5.7 exceed W_0^i = 240 A. These large-EW objects probably cannot be accounted for by ordinary star-forming populations with a Salpeter IMF. We also find that LAEs with fainter far-UV luminosities have larger EWs. Finally, we derive the far-UV luminosity function of LAEs down to M_UV ~= -19.6 using the photometric sample, and compare it with that of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). We report new spectroscopy of two star-forming galaxies with strong Ly_alpha emission at z=6.03 and z=6.04 in the Subaru Deep Field. These two objects are originally selected as i'-dropouts (i'-z' > 1.5) showing an interesting photometric property, the ``NB921 depression''. The NB921-band (centered at 9196A) magnitude is significantly depressed with respect to the z'-band magnitude. The optical spectra of these two objects exhibit asymmetric emission-lines at lambda_obs ~ 8540A and ~ 8560A, suggesting that these objects are Ly_alpha emitters at z~6. The rest-frame equivalent widths of the Ly_alpha emission of the two objects are 94A and 236A; the latter one is the Ly_alpha emitter with the largest Ly_alpha equivalent width at z > 6 ever spectroscopically confirmed. The spectroscopically measured Ly_alpha fluxes of these two objects are consistent with the interpretation that the NB921 depression is caused by the contribution of the strong Ly_alpha emission to the z'-band flux. Most of the NB921-depressed i'-dropout objects are thought to be strong Ly_alpha emitters at 6.0 < z < 6.5; Galactic L and T dwarfs and NB921-dropout galaxies at z > 6.6 do not dominate the NB921-depressed i'-dropout sample. Thus the NB921-depression method is very useful for finding high-z Ly_alpha emitters with a large Ly_alpha equivalent width over a large redshift range, 6.0 < z < 6.5. Although the broadband-selected sample at z ~ 3 contains only a small fraction of objects with a Ly_alpha equivalent width larger than 100A, the i'-dropout sample of the Subaru Deep Field contains a much larger fraction of such strong Ly_alpha emitters. This may imply a strong evolution of the Ly_alpha equivalent width from z > 6 to z ~ 3., 21 pages, 6 figures, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal

Why are the nuclei of some galaxies more active than others? If most galaxies harbor a central massive black hole, the main difference is probably in how well it is fueled by its surroundings. We investigate the hypothesis that such a difference can be seen in the detailed circumnuclear morphologies of galaxies using several quantitatively defined features, including bars, isophotal twists, boxy and disky isophotes, and strong nonaxisymmetric features in unsharp-masiced images. These diagnostics are applied to 250 high-resolution images of galaxy centers obtained in the near-infrared with NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. To guard against the influence of possible biases and selection effects, we have carefully matched samples of Seyfert 1, Seyfert 2, LINER, starburst, and normal galaxies in their basic properties, taking particular care to ensure that each was observed with a similar average scale (10-15 pc pixel-1)- Several morphological differences among our five different spectroscopic classifications emerge from the analysis. The H II/starburst galaxies show the strongest deviations from smooth elliptical isophotes, while the normal galaxies and LINERs have the least disturbed morphology. The Seyfert 2s have significantly more twisted isophotes than any other category, and the early-type Seyfert 2s are significantly more disturbed than the early-type Seyfert 1s. The morphological differences between Seyfert Is and Seyfert 2s suggest that more is at work than simply the viewing angle of the central engine. They may correspond to different evolutionary stages.

We have used the ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue to extract a complete sample of sources selected in the band from 0.1-0.4 keV. This 0.25 keV-selected sample is composed of 54 Seyfert galaxies, 25 BL Lacertae objects, 4 clusters and 27 Galactic stars or binaries. Seyfert-type galaxies with 'ultrasoft' X-ray spectra can very often be classed optically as narrow-line Seyfert 1s (NLS1s). Such objects are readily detected in 0.25 keV surveys; the sample reported here contains 20 NLS1s, corresponding to a 40 per cent fraction of the Seyferts. Optical spectra of the Seyfert galaxies were gathered for correlative analysis, which confirmed the well-known relations between X-ray slope and optical spectral properties (e.g. [QIII]/Hβ ratio; Fe II strength, Hβ width). The various intercorrelations are most likely driven, fundamentally, by the shape of the photoionizing continuum in Seyfert nuclei. We argue that a steep X-ray spectrum is a better indicator of an 'extreme' set of physical properties in Seyfert galaxies than is the narrowness of the optical Hβ line. The correlation studies were also used to isolate a number of Seyfert galaxies with apparently 'anomalous' properties. Of particular interest are the six objects with relatively weak permitted line emission (Hβ and Fe II) and weak optical continua. Such objects are rare in most surveys, but two of these (IC 3599 and NGC 5905) are known to be transient active galactic nuclei in which the X-ray flux has faded by factors ∼100. If the other four objects also turn out to be transient, this would demonstrate that 0.25 keV surveys provide an efficient way of finding an interesting class of object. Finally, the luminosity function of the 0.25 keV-selected Seyfert galaxies was determined and broken down into subsamples to investigate the relative space densities of Seyferts when separated on the basis of either X-ray slope or Hβ linewidth.

Measurements of [O III] emission in Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z > 3 are presented. Four galaxies were observed with narrowband filters using the near-IR camera on the Keck I 10 m telescope. A fifth galaxy was observed spectroscopically during the commissioning of NIRSPEC, the new infrared spectrometer on Keck II. The emission-line spectrum is used to place limits on the metallicity. Comparing these new measurements with others available from the literature, we find that strong oxygen emission in LBGs may suggest subsolar metallicity for these objects. The [O III] λ5007 line is also used to estimate the star formation rate (SFR) of the LBGs. The inferred SFRs are higher than those estimated from the UV continuum, and may be evidence for dust extinction.

We present a catalog of extremely red objects discovered using the NICMOS/HST parallel imaging database and ground-based optical follow-up observations. Within an area of 16 square arc-minutes, we detect 15 objects with $\rm R - F160W > 5$ and $\rm F160W < 21.5$. We have also obtained K-band photometry for a subset of the 15 EROs. All of the $\rm R - F160W$ selected EROs imaged at K-band have $\rm R - K > 6$. Our objects have $\rm F110W - F160W$ colors in the range of 1.3 - 2.1, redder than the cluster ellipticals at $z \sim 0.8$ and nearly 1 magnitude redder than the average population selected from the F160W images at the same depth. In addition, among only 22 NICMOS pointings, we detected two groups or clusters in two fields, each contains 3 or more EROs, suggesting that extremely red galaxies may be strongly clustered. At bright magnitudes with $\rm F160W < 19.5$, the ERO surface density is similar to what has been measured by other surveys. At the limit of our sample, F160W = 21.5, our measured surface density is 0.94$\pm 0.24$ arcmin^{-2}. Excluding the two possible groups/clusters and the one apparently stellar object, reduces the surface density to 0.38$\pm 0.15$ arcmin^{-2}., To appear in the AJ August issue. We present 263 optical and near-infrared (NIR) images for 42 1s and 48 Seyfert 2s, selected from the Extended 12 μm Galaxy Sample. Elliptically averaged profiles are derived from the images, and isophotal radii and magnitudes are calculated from these. We also report virtual aperture photometry that, judging from comparison with previous work, is accurate to roughly 0.05 mag in the optical, and 0.07 mag in the NIR. Our B-band isophotal magnitude and radii, obtained from ellipse fitting, are in good agreement with those of Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies. When compared with the B band, V, I, J, and K isophotal diameters show that the colors in the outer regions of Seyfert galaxies are consistent with the colors of normal spirals. Differences in the integrated isophotal colors and comparison with a simple model show that the active nucleus + bulge are stronger and redder in the NIR than in the optical. Finally, roughly estimated Seyfert disk surface brightnesses are significantly brighter in B and K than those in normal spirals of similar morphological type.

Long-lived emission, known as afterglow, has now been detected from about a dozen gamma-ray bursts. Distance determinations place the bursts at cosmological distances, with redshifts,z, ranging from similar to 1 to 3, The energy required to produce these bright gamma-ray flashes is enormous: up to similar to 10(53) erg, or to per cent of the rest-mass energy of a neutron star, if the emission is isotropic. Here we present optical and near-infrared observations of the afterglow of GRB990123, and we determine a redshift of z greater than or equal to 1.6, This is to date the brightest gamma-ray burst with a well-localized position and if the gamma-rays were emitted isotropically, the energy release exceeds the rest-mass energy of a neutron st ar, so challenging current theoretical models of the sources. We argue, however, that our data may provide evidence of beamed (rather than isotropic) radiation, thereby reducing the total energy released to a lever where stellar-death models are still tenable.

We have obtained WFPC2 images of 256 of the nearest (z ≤ 0.035) Seyfert 1, Seyfert 2, and starburst galaxies. Our 500 s broadband (F606W) exposures reveal much fine-scale structure in the centers of these galaxies, including dust lanes and patches, bars, rings, wisps, and filaments, and tidal features such as warps and tails. Most of this fine structure cannot be detected in ground-based images. We have assigned qualitative classifications for these morphological features and a Hubble type for the inner region of each galaxy, and we have also measured quantitative information such as 0″.18 and 0″.92 aperture magnitudes, position angles, and ellipticities, where possible. There is little direct evidence for unusually high rates of interaction in the Seyfert galaxies. Slightly less than 10% of all the galaxies show tidal features or multiple nuclei. The incidence of inner starburst rings is about 10% in both classes of Seyfert galaxies. In contrast, galaxies with H II region emission-line spectra appear substantially more irregular and clumpy because of their much higher rates of current star formation per unit of galactic mass. The presence of an unresolved central continuum source in our Hubble Space Telescope images is a virtually perfect indicator of a Seyfert 1 nucleus as seen by ground-based spectroscopy. Fifty-two percent of these Seyfert 1 point sources are saturated in our images; we use their wings to estimate magnitudes ranging from 15.8 to 18.5. The converse is not universally true, however, as over one-third of Seyferts with direct spectroscopic evidence for broad Balmer wings show no nuclear point source. These 34 resolved Seyfert 1's have fainter nonstellar nuclei, which appear to be more extinguished by dust absorption. Like the Seyfert 2's, they have central surface brightnesses consistent with those expected for the bulges of normal galaxies. The rates for the occurrences of bars in Seyfert 1's and 2's and non-Seyferts are the same. We found one significant morphological difference between the host galaxies of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 nuclei. The Seyfert 2 galaxies are significantly more likely to show nuclear dust absorption, especially in lanes and patches that are irregular or reach close to the nucleus. A few simple tests show that the difference cannot be explained by different average redshifts or selection techniques. It is confirmed by our galaxy morphology classifications, which show that Seyfert 1 nuclei reside in earlier type galaxies than Seyfert 2 nuclei. If, as we believe, this is an intrinsic difference in host galaxy properties, it undermines one of the postulates of the strong unification hypothesis for Seyfert galaxies, that they merely appear different because of the orientation of their central engine. The excess galactic dust we see in Seyfert 2's may cause substantial absorption that obscures their hypothesized broad emission line regions and central nonstellar continua. This galactic dust could produce much of the absorption in Seyfert 2 nuclei that had instead been attributed to a thick dusty accretion torus forming the outer part of the central engine.
