Abstract

This chapter introduces philosophers of engineering to a new research agenda currently permeating the history and philosophy of science, one concerned with the functions of narrative in science. The functions of narrative that I am here interested in contribute to two particular kinds of epistemic positioning. First, that of the individual researcher’s epistemic position in relation to a field of inquiry. Second, the positioning of a community of researchers gathered around and looking at newly acquired evidence, assessing its significance. In the first, the kind of inference and hypothesis making that narrative affords stimulates and orders inquiry. In the second, narrative supplies a means of reasoning from the particulars of a case to something deeper or broader. The case analysed concerns an interdisciplinary project between engineers, applied mathematicians, and biologists dedicated to understanding how dandelion seeds fly. My analysis draws on the concepts of ‘tellability’ from literary study and ‘synoptic judgment’ from the philosophy of history. Tellability is used to explore question generation in science and engineering, in particular the making of more or less ‘askable’ questions. Synoptic judgement is used to interrogate my own case, key elements of which resemble synoptic judgement without assimilating to it.

Abstract

The First International Conference in Systems and Network Medicine gathered together 200 global thought leaders, scientists, clinicians, academicians, industry and government experts, medical and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and policymakers. Held at Georgetown University Conference Center in Washington D.C. on September 11-13, 2019, the event featured a day of pre-conference lectures and hands-on bioinformatic computational workshops followed by two days of deep and diverse scientific talks, panel discussions with eminent thought leaders, and scientific poster presentations. Topics ranged from: Systems and Network Medicine in Clinical Practice; the role of -omics technologies in Health Care; the role of Education and Ethics in Clinical Practice, Systems Thinking, and Rare Diseases; and the role of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. 16. Guiding Cancer Control: A Path to Transformation

Abstract

Throughout history, perhaps no other disease has generated the level of social, scientific, and political discourse or has had the degree of cultural significance as cancer. A collective in the truest sense of the word, “cancer” is a clustering of different diseases that afflict individuals in different ways. Its burdens are equally broad and diverse, from the physical, financial, and psychological tolls it imposes on individuals to the costs it inflicts upon the nation's clinical care and public health systems, and despite decades of concerted efforts often referred to as the “war on cancer”, those costs have only continued to grow over time. The causes and effects of cancer are complex–in part preventable and treatable, but also in part unknown, and perhaps even unknowable. Guiding Cancer Control defines the key principles, attributes, methods, and tools needed to achieve the goal of implementing an effective national cancer control plan. This report describes the current structure of cancer control from a local to global scale, identifies necessary goals for the system, and formulates the path towards integrated disease control systems and a cancer-free future.
