We present a new numerical tool designed to probe the dense layers of neutron star crusts. It is based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with generalized Skyrme nuclear energy-density functionals of the Brussels-Montreal family. We use it to study the time evolution of a nucleus accelerating through superfluid neutron medium in the inner crust of a neutron star. We extract an effective mass in the low velocity limit. We observe a threshold velocity and specify mechanisms of dissipation: phonon emission, Cooper pairs breaking, and vortex rings creation. These microscopic effects are of key importance for understanding various neutron star phenomena. Moreover, the mechanisms we describe are general and apply also to other fermionic superfluids interacting with obstacles like liquid helium or ultracold gases.

Abstract We investigate the life cycle of the large amplitude Higgs mode in strongly interacting superfluid Fermi gas. Through numerical simulations with time-dependent density functional theory and the technique of the interaction quench, we verify the previous theoretical predictions on the mode’s frequency. Next, we demonstrate that the mode is dynamically unstable against external perturbation and qualitatively examine the emerging state after the mode decays. The post-decay state is characterized by spatial fluctuations of the order parameter and density at scales comparable to the superfluid coherence length scale. We identify similarities with FFLO states, which become more prominent at higher dimensionalities and nonzero spin imbalances.

We investigate properties of spin-imbalanced ultracold Fermi gas in a large range of spin polarizations at low temperatures. We present results of microscopic calculations based on mean-field and density functional theory approaches, with no symmetry constraints. At low polarization values we predict the structure of the system as consisting of several spin-polarized droplets. As the polarization increases, the system self-organizes into a disordered structures similar to liquid crystals, and energetically they can compete with ordered structures such as grid-like domain walls. At higher polarizations the system starts to develop regularities that, in principle, can be called supersolid, where periodic density modulation and pairing correlations coexist. The robustness of the results has been checked with respect to temperature effects, dimensionality, and the presence of a trapping potential. Dynamical stability has also been investigated.

Introduction: People over the age of 65 are at a significant risk of vitamin D deficiency. This a result of many factors. Based on the studies conducted so far, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and the elderly age as well as the cognitive efficiency of people in this age group. The aim of the study was to assess the levels of vitamin D, the extent of its deficiency and cognitive performance in people over the age of 65. Material and methods: The study was carried out in 2014–2015 at the Clinic of Old Age Psychiatry and Psychotic Disorders of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Medical University of Lodz, as part of the DemNutr research project. One hundred eighty-seven people were qualified for the study. Among the research methods used, there were: interview, physical examination, clinical-demographic questionnaire and vitamin D [25(OH) D] concentration in blood serum. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 71.3 ± 5.9 years. The majority of the respondents were women – 78.6% (n = 147), men were only 21.4% (n = 40). The mean vitamin D concentrations in the groups of men and women were respectively 23.9 ± 7.46 ng/mL and 24.9 ± 7.21 ng/mL, and were below the norm in both groups. There was a statistically significant difference in the distribution of vitamin D concentration depending on the age of the subjects (p < 0.05). It turned out that in all people aged 85 or more the concentration of vitamin D was below 30 ng/mL vs. 78.7% of those surveyed aged 65–74 vs. 61.4% of people aged 75–84. A statistically significant difference in the average vitamin D concentration was also found in people who were examined in the summer (July – August) compared to the subjects in the period from September to June (p < 0.01). Significantly higher concentrations of vitamin D3 were observed in the summer (July – August) than in the remaining months of the year. The respective averages were: 27.2 ± 6.78 ng/mL vs. 23.9 ± 7.24 ng/mL. The mean values in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were 28.5 ± 1.71 points. There was a statistically significant difference between the number of points obtained in MMSE and age (rank = −0.227, p = 0.0009). There was no statistically significant relationship between the MMSE score the sex of the subjects and the vitamin D concentration (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Among the people over the age of 65, vitamin D deficiency is a common phenomenon. In the study, however, there was no correlation between the vitamin D concentration and the results achieved in MMSE.

The core symptoms of different dementia subtypes are the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and its neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS). BPSD symptoms may occur at any stage in the case of dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD), whereas they tend to occur early on in the case of its behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia or dementia with Lewy bodies and are essential for diagnosis. BPSD treatment consists of non-pharmacological as well as pharmacological interventions, with non-pharmacological interactions being suggested as first-line treatment. Agitation, psychotic features, apathy, depression, and anxiety may not respond to acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or memantine in AD cases; therefore, antipsychotics, antidepressants, sedative drugs or anxiolytics, and antiepileptic drugs are typically prescribed. However, such management of BPSD can be complicated by hypersensitivity to antipsychotic drugs, as observed in DLB, and a lack of effective pro-cognitive treatment in the case of frontotemporal dementia. The present paper reviews current knowledge of the management of BPSD and its limitations and discusses on-going clinical trials and future therapeutic options.

Oprócz szeroko opisywanych zaburzeń poznawczych czy objawów neuropsychiatrycznych otępienie w chorobie Alzheimera prowadzi do postępującego wyniszczenia organizmu. Niedożywienie dotyczy nawet 25% pacjentów z zespołem otępiennym. Jako że choroba występuje głównie u osób po 65. roku życia, chory z jednej strony doświadcza zmian typowych dla wieku podeszłego, a z drugiej jego stan odżywienia kształtują zmiany degeneracyjne ośrodkowego układu nerwowego i wtórne do nich objawy kliniczne. Udowodniono, że stopień odżywienia organizmu ma bardzo istotny wpływ na progresję choroby i rokowanie, a także na częstość występowania chorób współistniejących i hospitalizacji oraz ogólną śmiertelność. Ważne są zatem wczesne wykrycie zagrożenia i wprowadzenie modyfikacji umożliwiających pacjentowi utrzymanie prawidłowego stanu odżywienia. Jedną z najistotniejszych interwencji jest edukacja opiekunów, prowadzona już od początkowych etapów choroby. Wykorzystywane metody należy dopasować do problemów konkretnej osoby, ponieważ interwencje będą się różniły w zależności od stopnia zaawansowania choroby i aktualnie występujących zaburzeń. Dotychczas opisano wiele prostych modyfikacji, które ułatwiają prawidłowe żywienie pacjentów, m.in. dostosowanie posiłków i otoczenia podczas ich podawania. Sformułowano również konkretne wytyczne odnośnie do stosowania doustnych odżywek i żywności medycznej, wyrównywania niedoborów pokarmowych oraz żywienia pozajelitowego. Trzeba pamiętać, że decyzje dotyczące leczenia powinny być podejmowane w sposób etyczny i z uwzględnieniem preferencji chorego.

Reading books to shelter animals combining auditory enrichment with human presence is increasingly used although its effects on animal welfare have not yet been investigated. This study compared the behaviour of single-housed shelter dogs and cats during a prerecorded reading condition in the absence or presence of an unfamiliar human (without direct physical contact). Fourteen dogs and twenty-one cats were observed in their enclosure in the two conditions in a counterbalanced order. Behaviours such as scratching the door, gaze direction and location in relation to the audio source/human were analysed from video recording for 10 min per condition. Dogs spent more time in their bed (p < 0.047) and looking at the auditory source (p < 0.004) when a human was present. Cats showed door scratching and rubbing when a human was present (p < 0.043), whereas they tended to spend more time in the vertical dimension (p = 0.051), where the hiding boxes were located, during auditory stimulation without a human present. These results show that the presence of a human induces greater interest compared to just audio stimulation in shelter dogs and cats but may induce frustration likely due to not being able to physically interact in some animals.

Późne dyskinezy definiowane są jako zespół mimowolnych, nieregularnych, hiperkinetycznych ruchów obejmujący mieszane zaburzenia ruchowe w obrębie twarzy i ust oraz ruchy choreoatetotyczne w obrębie tułowia i kończyn. Stanowią one poważny i zwykle nieodwracalny niepożądany efekt przewlekłego leczenia neuroleptykami, występujący u około 15–20% pacjentów. Podejmowano próby leczenia amantadyną, lewetiracetamem, piracetamem, klonazepamem, propranololem, witaminą B6, witaminą E, ondansetronem, toksyną botulinową oraz preparatami Ginkgo biloba, jednak skuteczność terapii w wielu przypadkach nie ma potwierdzenia w długoterminowych badaniach na liczniejszych grupach chorych. Jedną z dostępnych opcji terapeutycznych jest tetrabenazyna, zarejestrowana w Polsce w leczeniu hiperkinetycznych zaburzeń motorycznych w chorobie Huntingtona. W artykule przedstawiamy przebieg i efekty leczenia tetrabenazyną u czterech pacjentów z późnymi dyskinezami wywołanymi przez leki przeciwpsychotyczne. Na podstawie doświadczenia zdobytego w czasie prowadzenia programu badawczego z użyciem tetrabenazyny uważamy, że stosowanie tego leku należy ograniczyć do pacjentów będących w stabilnym stanie psychicznym, bez objawów zespołu depresyjnego i bez aktywnych objawów psychotycznych. Za bezwzględne przeciwwskazania uznajemy obecność wyraźnych skłonności, myśli i tendencji suicydalnych oraz obecność w wywiadzie złośliwego zespołu poneuroleptycznego. Podejmując decyzję o włączeniu tetrabenazyny, należy pamiętać o uzyskaniu zgody pacjenta na zastosowanie leku poza zarejestrowanymi wskazaniami, a także o wnikliwym monitorowaniu stanu psychicznego i neurologicznego.

Od lat pojawiają się kasandryczne wizje dotyczące epidemiologii otępień, a zwłaszcza choroby Alzheimera. Znaczne rozpowszechnienie otępień dzisiaj i prognozowane potrojenie liczby chorych otępiałych w najbliższych dekadach zmusza do poszukiwań skutecznych opcji leczniczych. Mimo wieloletnich badań nie udało się niestety opracować skutecznej terapii zespołów neurodegeneracyjnych, dlatego równolegle prowadzi się badania mające na celu opracowanie efektywnych strategii prewencyjnych. Oprócz wpływu aktywności umysłowej i fizycznej obszar intensywnych badań prewencyjnych stanowi dieta. Dostrzega się coraz więcej zależności między stanem odżywienia i dietą a funkcjami poznawczymi. Badania w tym zakresie można podzielić na trzy podstawowe obszary. Po pierwsze, na podstawie badań podstawowych analizowane jest znaczenie składników pochodzących z pożywienia dla funkcjonowania układu nerwowego. Po drugie, trwają projekty obserwacyjne i badania prowadzone w populacji. Wieloletnia obserwacja zachowań i nawyków żywieniowych w dużych populacjach i wskaźniki stosowania się do konkretnych wytycznych dietetycznych pozwalają na wyciąganie wniosków o protekcyjnym działaniu diety. Po trzecie, podejmuje się próby prospektywnych badań prewencyjnych (z interwencjami dietetycznymi, a także zaleceniami dotyczącymi aktywności umysłowej i fizycznej) oraz badania kliniczne oceniające efekty wdrożonej specyficznej diety lub wpływ produktów przemysłowych (np. środków spożywczych przeznaczenia medycznego). Na bazie dostępnej wiedzy sugeruje się, że interwencje dietetyczne, zwłaszcza w połączeniu z aktywnością umysłową i fizyczną, mogą przynieść najwięcej korzyści – o ile zostaną wdrożone odpowiednio wcześnie i będą stosowane przez praktycznie całe życie.

Otępienie z ciałami Lewy’ego (DLB) to druga (po chorobie Alzheimera) przyczyna otępień pierwotnie zwyrodnieniowych. Objawy psychotyczne należą do typowych symptomów DLB, a omamy wzrokowe, najczęstsze w tej grupie objawów, uznano za kluczowy objaw i umieszczono w klinicznych kryteriach diagnostycznych. Jak wynika z piśmiennictwa, u chorych z DLB można zaobserwować całe spektrum treści urojeniowych. Podkreśla się również ryzyko postawienia błędnej diagnozy z powodu treści urojeniowych obecnych u chorych z DLB. Współwystępowanie omamów wzrokowych i urojeń najczęściej skutkuje ustaleniem rozpoznania psychozy starczej. Co więcej, urojeniowa parazytoza (psychoza monosymptomatyczna zwana zespołem Ekboma) powinna być brana pod uwagę w trakcie diagnostyki różnicowej. Ze względu na specyfikę objawów chorzy z urojeniami zakażenia parazytami często zasięgają opinii różnych specjalistów (dermatologów, internistów, alergologów), a odrzucają rozpoznanie psychiatryczne i odmawiają leczenia psychotropowego. Niestety, istnieją jedynie ograniczone dane na temat skuteczności specyficznych interwencji farmakologicznych, a po zastosowaniu neuroleptyku u około 50% chorych z DLB odnotowuje się poważne reakcje nadwrażliwości. Poprawy w zakresie omamów wzrokowych można się spodziewać po włączeniu do leczenia inhibitorów cholinesterazy. W pracy przedstawiono dwa przypadki pacjentek z DLB doświadczających urojeń choroby pasożytniczej (urojeniowa parazytoza). Zaprezentowano obraz kliniczny psychozy oraz przydatność inhibitorów cholinesterazy i małych dawek leków przeciwpsychotycznych w leczeniu psychozy u chorych z DLB.

Mimo że w badaniach epidemiologicznych i kliniczno-neuropatologicznych potwierdzono jego znaczne rozpowszechnienie, pozostaje względnie rzadko rozpoznawane. Najczęściej mylnie wskazuje się na choroby Alzheimera lub Parkinsona, rzadziej psychozę (zwykle wiązaną z zaawansowanym wiekiem chorych). Nieprawidłowa diagnoza skutkuje leczeniem nieskutecznym, a z powodu nadwrażliwości na nawet niewielkie dawki leków przeciwpsychotycznych u chorych z DLB – często skrajnie niebezpiecznym. Diagnostyka różnicowa obejmuje w głównej mierze różnicowanie z innymi zespołami pierwotnie zwyrodnieniowymi, w tym z najbardziej zbliżonymi fenotypowo – chorobą Alzheimera z parkinsonizmem i otępieniem w chorobie Parkinsona. Różnicowanie i ustalenie poprawnego rozpoznania ułatwia stosowanie klinicznych kryteriów diagnostycznych oraz badań dodatkowych. Najważniejszą kwestią pozostaje stwierdzenie charakterystycznego obrazu klinicznego psychiatrycznego i neurologicznego oraz sekwencja wystąpienia otępienia i parkinsonizmu. Prawidłowe rozpoznanie i posługiwanie się strategiami terapeutycznymi z pogranicza neurologii i psychiatrii pozwala na uzyskanie optymalnych popraw u większości pacjentów. Kluczowe pozostaje dziś zastosowanie inhibitorów cholinesteraz (leków wpływających korzystnie na funkcje poznawcze, ale także na niektóre objawy behawioralne, w tym psychotyczne) oraz lewodopy (w celu kontroli objawów ruchowych). Leki przeciwpsychotyczne należy co do zasady stosować bardzo ostrożnie, a lekiem z wyboru jest obecnie kwetiapina. Istotny problem stanowi także terapia współistniejących zaburzeń snu związanych z fazą REM oraz zaburzeń autonomicznych.

Nieprawidłowy stan odżywienia (malnutrition) należy do najważniejszych problemów klinicznych w populacji ogólnej, a jeszcze większego znaczenia nabiera w populacjach szczególnych (dzieci, osoby w wieku podeszłym). Niestety, rozpowszechnienie nieprawidłowego stanu odżywienia zazwyczaj jest niedoszacowane, znaczenie często minimalizowane, a ocena pomijana w rutynowym badaniu chorych. Od niedawna zalecenia dotyczące konieczności badania stopnia odżywienia chorych hospitalizowanych obowiązują również w Polsce. Jedną ze szczególnych populacji zagrożonych wystąpieniem zaburzeń odżywienia jest grupa osób w wieku podeszłym. Wśród seniorów obserwuje się występowanie zjawiska niedoboru białka i energii (protein-energy malnutrition, PEM). Częste występowanie niedożywienia wśród seniorów wynika z wielu czynników ogólnych, ale również typowych dla wieku, zarówno biologicznych, jak i psychospołecznych. Jako wiodące wymieniane są: procesy starzenia organizmu, utrata apetytu, pogorszenie odczuwania smaku i/lub zapachu, zaburzenia wchłaniania, zaburzenia stomatologiczne i protetyczne, choroby przewodu pokarmowego, choroby ogólnoustrojowe, przyjmowane leki, deficyty zmysłów, zmieniony poziom aktywności własnej i społecznej, zmiany w preferencji pokarmów, stan materialny oraz stan psychiczny. Nieprawidłowy stan odżywienia dotyczy również chorych z otępieniem i skutkuje nasileniem objawów neuropsychiatrycznych (omamy, apatia, zaburzenia zachowania, zaburzenia snu), pogorszeniem rokowania, wzrostem ryzyka umieszczenia w placówce opiekuńczej, a w konsekwencji wzrostem śmiertelności. W tej sytuacji zasadniczą sprawą jest konieczność wykrycia osób nieprawidłowo odżywionych. Panel dostępnych metod diagnostycznych jest rozbudowany, począwszy od prostych narzędzi ankietowych, poprzez bardzo rozbudowane kwestionariusze, aż do metod z użyciem specjalistycznej i kosztownej aparatury (analiza bioimpedancji, densytometria podwójnej energii).

Introduction: The pattern of clinical symptoms and cognitive impairment in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is different from Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The aim of this study was to determine which clinical or neuropsychological features most accurately predicted the diagnosis of DLB or AD in the early stage of dementia.Material and methods: Sixty-two subjects were included, 20 of those with clinically diagnosed DLB, 23 with AD and 19 cognitively intact controls. An elaborated battery of clinical and neuropsychological tools was applied.Results: There were significant differences in clinical variables between the dementia groups despite similar duration of disease. In comparison to AD patients, the subjects with probable DLB achieved significantly worse scores in the NPI, HIS, UPDRS and ADL scales. The presence/recent history of apathy and visual hallucinations were significantly more frequent in DLB. The onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms was earlier in DLB and the symptoms were more severe in this group. The DLB cases had an increased prevalence of a positive history of REM sleep behaviour disorder and anosmia as well. The DLB group was more impaired in category fluency (animals), visuoperceptual, constructional, and attention tasks.Conclusions: DLB patients have a different profile of clinical symptoms and neuropsychological deficits early in the course of dementia compared to the AD group. Neuropsychological evaluation in AD and DLB reveals multiple cognitive deficits even in early and moderate dementia.

Two major recent developments in theory and computational resources created the favorable conditions for achieving a microscopic description of fission dynamics in classically allowed regions of the collective potential energy surface, almost eighty years after its discovery in 1939 by Hahn and Strassmann [1]. The first major development was in theory, the extension of the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) [2–5] to superfluid fermion systems [6]. The second development was in computing, the emergence of powerful enough supercomputers capable of solving the complex systems of equations describing the time evolution in three dimensions without any restrictions of hundreds of strongly interacting nucleons. Thus the conditions have been created to renounce phenomenological models and incomplete microscopic treatments with uncontrollable approximations and/or assumptions in the description of the complex dynamics of fission. Even though the available nuclear energy density functionals (NEDFs) are phenomenological still, their accuracy is improving steadily and the prospects of being able to perform calculations of the nuclear fission dynamics and to predict many properties of the fission fragments, otherwise not possible to extract from experiments.

Recently, we have reported a novel role of pairing in low-energy heavy ion reactions at energies above the Coulomb barrier, which may have a detectable impact on reaction outcomes, such as the kinetic energy of fragments and the fusion cross section [arXiv:1611.10261, arXiv:1702.00069]. The phenomenon mimics the one studied experimentally with ultracold atomic gases, where two clouds of fermionic superfluids with different phases of the pairing fields are forced to merge, inducing various excitation modes of the pairing field. Although it originates from the phase difference of the pairing fields, the physics behind it is markedly different from the so-called Josephson effect. In this short contribution, we will briefly outline the results discussed in our recent papers and explain relations with the field of ultracold atomic gases.

Superfluidity is a generic feature of various quantum systems at low temperatures and it is in particular important for the description of dynamics of low energy nuclear reactions. The Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) is, to date, the only microscopic method which takes into account in a consistent way far-from-equilibrium dynamics of pairing field and single-particle degrees of freedom. The local version of TDDFT, so-called TDSLDA, is particularly useful for the description of nuclear reactions and is well-suited for leadership class computers of hybrid (CPU+GPU) architecture. The preliminary results obtained for collisions involving both medium-mass and heavy nuclei at the energies around the Coulomb barrier are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new excitation mode has been predicted to exist in the unitary Fermi gas. It has a form of a spin-polarized impurity, which was dubbed as ferron. It is characterized by a closed nodal surface of the pairing field surrounding a partially spin-polarized superfluid region, where the phase differs by π. In this paper, we discuss the effect of temperature on the generation of the ferron and the adiabaticity of the spin-polarizing potential together with ferron’s ground-state properties. The possible existence of stable axial octupole and tetrahedral deformations is investigated in 80Zr and 98Zr. HFBCS calculations with parity projection have been performed for various parametrizations of the Skyrme energy functional. The correlation and excitation energies of negative parity states associated with shape fluctuations have been obtained using the generator coordinate method (GCM). The results indicate that in these nuclei both the axial octupole and tetrahedral deformations are of dynamic character and possess similar characteristics. Various Skyrme forces give consistent results as a function of these two octupole degrees of freedom both at the mean-field level as well as for configuration mixing calculations. In recent years, the N = 90 isotones have been investigated to a large extent in relation to studies of quantum phase transitions. In this paper, we use the mean field approach with pairing-deformation self-consistent total Routhian surface (TRS) calculations to study the N = 90 isotones and neighboring nuclei. The important probes, such as moments of inertia, quadrupole moments, the energy ratio of E(4+1)/E(2+1), and octupole and hexadecapole degrees of freedom are considered and the calculated results are compared with the available experimental data. From a microscopic point of view, the N = 90 isotones characterize the onset of the deformed region and are very well described by mean field calculations. The results are compared with those from other studies in beyond mean field approximations. Shape coexistence phenomena in the region of interest are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A fully symmetry unrestricted time-dependent density functional theory extended to include pairing correlations is used to calculate properties of the isovector giant dipole resonances of the deformed open-shell nuclei 172Yb (axially deformed), 188Os (triaxially deformed), 238U (axially deformed) and to demonstrate good agreement with experimental data on nuclear photo-absorption cross sections for two different Skyrme force parametrizations of the energy density functionals SkP and SLy4. Within the framework of the unrestricted time-dependent density functional theory, we present for the first time an analysis of the relativistic Coulomb excitation of the heavy deformed open shell nucleus 238U. The approach is based on the superfluid local density approximation formulated on a spatial lattice that can take into account coupling to the continuum, enabling self-consistent studies of superfluid dynamics of any nuclear shape. We compute the energy deposited in the target nucleus as a function of the impact parameter, finding it to be significantly larger than the estimate using the Goldhaber-Teller model. The isovector giant dipole resonance, the dipole pygmy resonance, and giant quadrupole modes are excited during the process. The one-body dissipation of collective dipole modes is shown to lead a damping width Γ↓ ≈ 0.4 MeV and the number of preequilibrium neutrons emitted has been quantified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a recent article, Kwon et al. [Nature (London) 600, 64 (2021)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/s41586-021-04047-4] revealed nonuniversal dissipative dynamics of quantum vortices in a fermionic superfluid. The enhancement of the dissipative process is pronounced for the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer interaction regime, and it was suggested that the effect is due to the presence of quasiparticles localized inside the vortex core. We test this hypothesis through numerical simulations with time-dependent density-functional theory: a fully microscopic framework with fermionic degrees of freedom. The results of fully microscopic calculations expose the impact of the vortex-bound states on dissipative dynamics in a fermionic superfluid. Their contribution is too weak to explain the experimental measurements, and we identify that thermal effects, giving rise to mutual friction between superfluid and the normal component, dominate the observed dynamics.

We characterize numerically the dominant dynamical regimes in a superfluid ultracold fermionic Josephson junction. Beyond the coherent Josephson plasma regime, we discuss the onset and physical mechanism of dissipation due to the superflow exceeding a characteristic speed, and provide clear evidence distinguishing its physical mechanism across the weakly and strongly interacting limits, despite qualitative dynamics of global characteristics being only weakly sensitive to the operating dissipative mechanism. Specifically, dissipation in the strongly interacting regime occurs through the phase-slippage process, caused by the emission and propagation of quantum vortices, and sound waves-similar to the Bose-Einstein condensation limit. Instead, in the weak interaction limit, the main dissipative channel arises through the pair-breaking mechanism.

Cold atoms experiments offer invaluable information on superfluid dynamics, including decay cascades of topological defects. While the cascade properties are well established for Bose systems, our understanding of their behavior in Fermi counterparts is very limited, in particular in spin-imbalanced systems, where superfluid (paired) and normal (unpaired) particles naturally coexist giving rise to complex spatial structure of the atomic cloud. Here we show, based on a newly developed microscopic approach, that the decay cascades of topological defects are dramatically modified by the spin polarization. We demonstrate that decay cascades end up at different stages: "dark soliton," "vortex ring," or "vortex line," depending on the polarization. We reveal that it is caused by sucking of unpaired particles into the soliton's internal structure. As a consequence vortex reconnections are hindered and we anticipate that quantum turbulence phenomenon can be significantly affected, indicating new physics induced by polarization effects.

We demonstrate, within symmetry unrestricted time-dependent density functional theory, the existence of new effects in low-energy nuclear reactions which originate from superfluidity. The dynamics of the pairing field induces solitonic excitations in the colliding nuclear systems, leading to qualitative changes in the reaction dynamics. The solitonic excitation prevents collective energy dissipation and effectively suppresses the fusion cross section. We demonstrate how the variations of the total kinetic energy of the fragments can be traced back to the energy stored in the superfluid junction of colliding nuclei. Both contact time and scattering angle in noncentral collisions are significantly affected. The modification of the fusion cross section and possibilities for its experimental detection are discussed.
