Rogue waves (RWs) are unexpectedly strong excitations emerging from an otherwise tranquil background. The nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), a ubiquitous model with wide applications to fluid mechanics, optics and plasmas, exhibits RWs only in the regime of modulation instability (MI) of the background. For system of multiple waveguides, the governing coupled NLSEs can produce regimes of MI and RWs, even if each component has dispersion and cubic nonlinearity of opposite signs. A similar effect will be demonstrated for a system of coupled derivative NLSEs (DNLSEs), where the special feature is the nonlinear self-steepening of narrow pulses. More precisely, these additional regimes of MI and RWs for coupled DNLSEs will depend on the mismatch in group velocities between the components, as well as the parameters for cubic nonlinearity and self-steepening. RWs considered in this work differ from those of the NLSEs in terms of the amplification ratio and criteria of existence. Evolution of solitons is addressed in the framework of an extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), including a pseudo-stimulated-Raman-scattering (pseudo-SRS) term, i.e., a spatial-domain counterpart of the SRS term which is well known as an ingredient of the temporal-domain NLSE in optics. In the present context, it is induced by the underlying interaction of the high-frequency envelope wave with a damped lowfrequency wave mode. Also included are spatial inhomogeneity of both the second-order dispersion (SOD) and self-phase modulation (SPM). It is shown that the wavenumber downshift of solitons, caused by the pseudo-SRS, may be compensated by an upshift provided by the increasing SPM and SOD coefficients. An analytical solution for solitons is obtained in an approximate form. Analytical and numerical results agree well.

The subject of the work are pairs of linearly coupled PT-symmetric dimers. Two different settings are introduced, namely, straight-coupled dimers, where each gain site is linearly coupled to one gain and one loss site, and cross-coupled dimers, with each gain site coupled to two lossy ones. The latter pair with equal coupling coefficients represents a "PT-hypersymmetric" quadrimer. We find symmetric and antisymmetric solutions in these systems, chiefly in an analytical form, and explore the existence, stability and dynamical behavior of such solutions by means of numerical methods. We thus identify bifurcations occurring in the systems, including spontaneous symmetry breaking and saddle-center bifurcations. Simulations demonstrate that evolution of unstable branches typically leads to blowup. We introduce a one-dimensional system combining the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric complex periodic potential and the $\chi ^{(2)}$ (second-harmonic-generating) nonlinearity. The imaginary part of the potential, which represents spatially separated and mutually balanced gain and loss, affects only the fundamental-frequency (FF) wave, while the real potential acts on the second-harmonic (SH) component too. Soliton modes are constructed, and their stability is investigated (by means of the linearization and direct simulations) in semi-infinite and finite gaps in the corresponding spectrum, starting from the bifurcation which generates the solitons from edges of the gaps' edges. Families of solitons embedded into the conttinuous spectrum of the SH component are found too, and it is demonstrated that a part of the families of these \textit{embedded solitons} (ESs) is stable. The analysis is focused on effects produced by the variation of the strength of the imaginary part of the potential, which is a specific characteristic of the $\mathcal{PT}$ system. The consideration is performed chiefly for the most relevant case of matched real potentials acting on the FF\ and SH components. The case of the real potential acting solely on the FF component is briefly considered too.

The interaction of matter-wave solitons with a potential barrier is a fundamentally important problem, and the splitting and subsequent recombination of the soliton by the barrier is the essence of soliton matter-wave interferometry. We demonstrate the three-dimensional (3D) character of the interactions in the case relevant to ongoing experiments, where the number of atoms in the soliton is sufficiently large that the soliton is close to collapse. The mean-field description is quite accurate, but the proximity to the collapse threshold makes the use of the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) irrelevant. We examine the soliton dynamics in the framework of the effectively 1D nonpolynomial Schr{\"{o}}dinger equation (NPSE), which admits the collapse in a modified form, and in parallel we use the full 3D GPE. Both approaches produce results which are very different from those produced in recent work which used the 1D cubic GPE. The features observed in both the NPSE and the 3D GPE include (a) an increase in the first reflection coefficient for increasing barrier height and decreasing atom number; (b) strong modulation in the secondary reflection/recombination probability vs. barrier height; (c) a pronounced asymmetry in the oscillation amplitudes of the transmitted and reflected fragments; (d) an enhancement of the transverse excitations as the number of atoms is increased. Exact expressions are obtained for a diversity of propagating patterns for a derivative nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a quintic nonlinearity. These patterns include bright pulses, fronts and dark solitons. The evolution of the wave envelope is determined via a pair of integrals of motion, and reduction is achieved to Jacobi elliptic cn and dn function representations. Numerical simulations are performed to establish the existence of parameter ranges for stability. The derivative quintic nonlinear Schr\"odinger model equations investigated here are important in the analysis of strong optical signals propagating in spatial or temporal waveguides., Comment: J. We construct families of symmetric, antisymmetric, and asymmetric solitary modes in one-dimensional bichromatic lattices with the second-harmonic-generating ($\chi ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity concentrated at a pair of sites placed at distance $l$. The lattice can be built as an array of optical waveguides. Solutions are obtained in an implicit analytical form, which is made explicit in the case of adjacent nonlinear sites, $l=1$. The stability is analyzed through the computation of eigenvalues for small perturbations, and verified by direct simulations. In the cascading limit, which corresponds to large mismatch $q$, the system becomes tantamount to the recently studied single-component lattice with two embedded sites carrying the cubic nonlinearity. The modes undergo qualitative changes with the variation of $q$. In particular, at $l\geq 2$, the symmetry-breaking bifurcation (SBB), which creates asymmetric states from symmetric ones, is supercritical and subcritical for small and large values of $q$, respectively, while the bifurcation is always supercritical at $l=1$. In the experiment, the corresponding change of the phase transition between the second and first kinds may be implemented by varying the mismatch, via the wavelength of the input beam. The existence threshold (minimum total power) for the symmetric modes vanishes exactly at $q=0$, which suggests a possibility to create the solitary mode using low-power beams. The stability of solution families also changes with $q$.

International audience; Two-dimensional arrays of optical waveguides, which feature dispersion, nonlinearity and discrete diffraction, support the propagation of spatiotemporal solitonic structures. Several structures with intrinsic vorticity S = 1 and 2 were studied by means of the variational analysis and numerical methods. Some vortices with S = 1 are stable. Numerical studies ofinteractions between them make it possible to identify four typical outcomes of the collisions, depending on the initial relative velocity of colliding solitons: rebound of slow solitons, fusion, splitting, and quasi-elastic interactions of fast solitons.

We revisit the topic of the existence and azimuthal modulational stability of solitary vortices (alias vortex solitons) in the two-dimensional (2D) cubic-quintic nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation. We develop a semi-analytical approach, assuming that the vortex soliton is relatively narrow, and thus splitting the full 2D equation into radial and azimuthal 1D equations. A variational approach is used to predict the radial shape of the vortex soliton, using the radial equation, yielding results very close to those obtained from numerical solutions. Previously known existence bounds for the solitary vortices are recovered by means of this approach. The 1D azimuthal equation of motion is used to analyze the modulational instability of the vortex solitons. The semi-analytical predictions -- in particular, that for the critical intrinsic frequency of the vortex soliton at the instability border -- are compared to systematic 2D simulations. We also compare our findings to those reported in earlier works, which featured some discrepancies. We then perform a detailed computational study of collisions between stable vortices with different topological charges. The Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), confined in a combination of the cigar-shaped trap and axial optical lattice, is studied in the framework of two models described by two versions of the one-dimensional (1D) discrete nonpolynomial Schr\"odinger equation (NPSE). Both models are derived from the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (3D GPE). To produce "model 1" (which was derived in recent works), the 3D GPE is first reduced to the 1D continual NPSE, which is subsequently discretized. "Model 2", that was not considered before, is derived by first discretizing the 3D GPE, which is followed by the reduction of the dimension. The two models seem very different; in particular, model 1 is represented by a single discrete equation for the 1D wave function, while model 2 includes an additional equation for the transverse width. Nevertheless, numerical analyses show similar behaviors of fundamental unstaggered solitons in both systems, as concerns their existence region and stability limits. Both models admit the collapse of the localized modes, reproducing the fundamental property of the self-attractive BEC confined in tight traps. Thus, we conclude that the fundamental properties of discrete solitons predicted for the strongly trapped self-attracting BEC are reliable, as the two distinct models produce them in a nearly identical form. However, a difference between the models is found too, as strongly pinned (very narrow) discrete solitons, which were previously found in model 1, are not generated by model 2 -- in fact, in agreement with the continual 1D NPSE, which does not have such solutions either. We introduce a two dimensional model for the Bose-Einstein condensate with both attractive and repulsive nonlinearities. We assume a combination of a double well potential in one direction, and an optical lattice along the perpendicular coordinate. We look for dual core solitons in this model, focusing on their symmetry-breaking bifurcations. The analysis employs a variational approximation, which is verified by numerical results. The bifurcation which transforms antisymmetric gap solitons into asymmetric ones is of supercritical type in the case of repulsion; in the attraction model, increase of the optical latttice strength leads to a gradual transition from subcritical bifurcation (for symmetric solitons) to a supercritical one., 6 pages, 5 figures

We consider vector solitons of mixed bright-dark types in quasi-one-dimensional spinor (F = 1) Bose-Einstein condensates. Using a multiscale expansion technique, we reduce the corresponding nonintegrable system of three coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs) to an integrable Yajima-Oikawa system. In this way, we obtain approximate solutions for small-amplitude vector solitons of dark-dark-bright and bright-bright-dark types, in terms of the m(F) = +1, -1, 0 spinor components, respectively. By means of numerical simulations of the full GPE system, we demonstrate that these states indeed feature soliton properties, i.e., they propagate undistorted and undergo quasielastic collisions. It is also shown that in the presence of a parabolic trap the bright component(s) is (are) guided by the dark one (s) and, as a result, the small-amplitude vector soliton as a whole performs quasiharmonic oscillations. The oscillation frequency is found as a function of the spin-dependent interaction strength for both small-amplitude and large-amplitude solitons.

We study four different approximations for finding the profile of discrete solitons in the one-dimensional Discrete Nonlinear Schr\"odinger (DNLS) Equation. Three of them are discrete approximations (namely, a variational approach, an approximation to homoclinic orbits and a Green-function approach), and the other one is a quasi-continuum approximation. We propose a new type of waveforms in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) discrete media-multilegged extended nonlinear structures (ENSs), built as arrays of lattice solitons (tiles and stones, in the 2D and 3D cases, respectively). We study the stability of the tiles and stones analytically, and then extend them numerically to complete ENS forms for both 2D and 3D lattices, aiming to single out stable ENSs. The predicted patterns can be realized in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in deep optical lattices, crystals built of microresonators, and 2D photonic crystals. In the latter case, the patterns provide for a technique for writing reconfigurable virtual partitions in multipurpose photonic devices.

Motivated by recent experimental and theoretical results on optical X-waves, we propose a new type of waveforms in 2D and 3D discrete media -- multi-legged extended nonlinear structures (ENS), built as arrays of lattice solitons (tiles or stones, in the 2D and 3D cases, respectively). First, we study the stability of the tiles and stones analytically, and then extend them numerically to complete ENS forms for both 2D and 3D lattices. The predicted patterns are relevant to a variety of physical settings, such as Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices, lattices built of microresonators, photorefractive crystals with optically induced lattices (in the 2D case) and others., 4 pages, 4 figures

We show that the quadratic (¿(2)) interaction of fundamental and second harmonics in a bulk dispersive medium, combined with self-focusing cubic (¿(3)) nonlinearity, give rise to stable three-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons (STSs), despite the possibility of the supercritical collapse, induced by the ¿(3) nonlinearity. At exact phase matching (ß=0), the STSs are stable for energies from zero up to a certain maximum value, while for ß¿0 the solitons are stable in energy intervals between finite limits.

We present a new species of spatiotemporal solitons (STSs, alias light bullets) that may be formed through the interaction of two waves with different polarizations in a birefringent Kerr medium near the point at which the second-order group-velocity dispersion (GVD) vanishes in the presence of a uniform cw background in one component. The analysis is based on an asymptotic reduction of the two cross-phase, modulation-coupled (2 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations, incorporating the third-order GVD to the Davey-Stewartson (DS) systems of type I or II for the self-defocusing and focusing Kerr nonlinearity, respectively. The STSs are then predicted following the pattern of the dromion solutions of the DS-I system and lump solitons of the DS-II system. Strictly speaking, the solitons are unstable, but they are shown to be stable objects on experimentally relevant scales of the propagation distance. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

We introduce a class of robust soliton clusters composed of N fundamental solitons in three-dimensional media combining the self-focusing cubic and self-defocusing quintic nonlinearities. The angular momentum is lent to the initial cluster through staircase or continuous ramp-like phase distribution. Formation of these clusters is predicted analytically, by calculating an effective interaction Hamiltonian Hint. If a minimum of Hint is found, direct three-dimensional simulations demonstrate that, when the initial pattern is close to the predicted equilibrium size, a very robust rotating cluster does indeed exist, featuring persistent oscillations around the equilibrium configuration (clusters composed of N = 4,5, and 6 fundamental solitons are investigated in detail). If a strong random noise is added to the initial configuration, the cluster eventually develops instability, either splitting into several fundamental solitons or fusing into a nearly axisymmetric vortex torus. These outcomes match the stability or instability of the three-dimensional vortex solitons with the same energy and spin; in particular, the number of the fragments in the case of the break-up is different from the number of solitons in the original cluster, being instead determined by the dominant mode of the azimuthal instability of the corresponding vortex soliton. The initial form of the phase distribution is important too: under the action of the noise, the cluster with the built-in staircase-like phase profile features azimuthal instability, while the one with the continuous distribution fuses into a vortex torus.
