Abstract Given the growing emphasis on energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and agricultural demand, there’s a pressing need for decentralized and scalable ammonia production. Converting nitrate ions electrochemically, which are commonly found in industrial wastewater and polluted groundwater, into ammonia offers a viable approach for both wastewater treatment and ammonia production yet limited by low producibility and scalability. Here we report a versatile and scalable solution-phase synthesis of high-entropy single-atom nanocages (HESA NCs) in which Fe and other five metals-Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, and In-are isolated via cyano-bridges and coordinated with C and N, respectively. Incorporating and isolating the five metals into the matrix of Fe resulted in Fe-C5 active sites with a minimized symmetry of lattice as well as facilitated water dissociation and thus hydrogenation process. As a result, the Fe-HESA NCs exhibited a high selectivity toward NH3 from the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate with a Faradaic efficiency of 93.4% while maintaining a high yield rate of 81.4 mg h−1 mg−1.

Abstract Objective We have developed explainable machine learning models to predict the overall survival (OS) of retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RLPS) patients. This approach aims to enhance the explainability and transparency of our modeling results. Methods We collected clinicopathological information of RLPS patients from The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and allocated them into training and validation sets with a 7:3 ratio. Simultaneously, we obtained an external validation cohort from The First Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University (Shanghai, China). We performed LASSO regression and multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis to identify relevant risk factors, which were then combined to develop six machine learning (ML) models: Cox proportional hazards model (Coxph), random survival forest (RSF), ranger, gradient boosting with component‐wise linear models (GBM), decision trees, and boosting trees. The predictive performance of these ML models was evaluated using the concordance index (C‐index), the integrated cumulative/dynamic area under the curve (AUC), and the integrated Brier score, as well as the Cox–Snell residual plot. We also used time‐dependent variable importance, analysis of partial dependence survival plots, and the generation of aggregated survival SHapley Additive exPlanations (SurvSHAP) plots to provide a global explanation of the optimal model. Additionally, SurvSHAP (t) and survival local interpretable model‐agnostic explanations (SurvLIME) plots were used to provide a local explanation of the optimal model. Results The final ML models are consisted of six factors: patient's age, gender, marital status, surgical history, as well as tumor's histopathological classification, histological grade, and SEER stage. Our prognostic model exhibits significant discriminative ability, particularly with the ranger model performing optimally. In the training set, validation set, and external validation set, the AUC for 1, 3, and 5 year OS are all above 0.83, and the integrated Brier scores are consistently below 0.15. The explainability analysis of the ranger model also indicates that histological grade, histopathological classification, and age are the most influential factors in predicting OS. Conclusions The ranger ML prognostic model exhibits optimal performance and can be utilized to predict the OS of RLPS patients, offering valuable and crucial references for clinical physicians to make informed decisions in advance.

Abstract Tornadoes, as highly destructive weather events, require accurate detection for effective decision‐making. Traditional radar‐based tornado detection algorithms (TDA) face challenges with limited tornado feature extraction capabilities, leading to high false alarm rates and low detection probabilities. This study introduces the Multi‐Task Identification Network (MTI‐Net), leveraging Doppler radar data to enhance tornado recognition. MTI‐Net integrates tornado detection and estimation tasks to acquire comprehensive spatial and locational information. As part of MTI‐Net, we introduce a novel backbone network of Multi‐Head Convolutional Block (MHCB), which incorporates Spatial and Channel Attention Units (SAU and CAU). SAU optimizes local tornado feature extraction, while CAU reduces false alarms by enhancing dependencies among input variables. Experiments demonstrate the superiority of MTI‐Net over TDA, with a decrease in false alarm rates from 0.94 to 0.46 and an increase in hit rates from 0.23 to 0.81, highlighting the effectiveness of MTI‐Net in handling small‐scale tornado events.

Abstract Objective Previous observational studies have explored the correlation between testosterone and cancer risk. However, the causal association between testosterone and various cancer types in women remains inconclusive. The objective of this Mendelian randomization study is to evaluate the causal links between total testosterone (TT) and bioavailable testosterone (BT) with cancer risk in females. Methods Initially, a rigorous quality control process was employed to identify suitable instrumental single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the exposure under investigation that exhibited a significant association. The genetic causal relationship between female testosterone levels and the risk of developing cancers was examined through a two-sample Mendelian randomization. Various analytical methods, including inverse-variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode, were applied in the investigation. Key findings were primarily based on the results obtained via IVW (random effects), and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the reliability of the obtained results. Furthermore, maximum likelihood, penalized weighted median, and IVW (fixed effects) methods were utilized to further validate the robustness of the results. Results Based on the results of IVW analysis, our study indicated a positive causal relationship between BT and breast cancer (OR = 1.1407, 95%CI: 1.0627–1.2244, P = 0.0015) and endometrial cancer (OR = 1.4610, 95%CI: 1.2695–1.6813, P = 1.22E-06). Moreover, our findings also showed a positive causal association between TT and breast cancer (OR = 1.1764, 95%CI: 1.0846–1.2761, P = 0.0005), cervical cancer(OR = 1.0020, 95%CI: 1.0007–1.0032, P = 0.0077), and endometrial cancer(OR = 1.4124, 95%CI: 1.2083–1.6511, P = 0.0001). Additionally, our results demonstrated a negative causal relationship between BT and ovarian cancer (OR = 0.8649, 95%CI: 0.7750–0.9653, P = 0.0320). However, no causal relationship was found between BT, TT and other types of cancer (corrected P > 0.05). Conclusions This study elucidates the role of testosterone on the development of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer. It also hints at a potential but fragile link between testosterone and bladder cancer, as well as thyroid cancer. Nonetheless, it's worth noting that no statistically significant relationship between testosterone and various other types of cancer in females was identified.

Abstract Subglacial discharge from the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) likely played a crucial role in the loss of the ice sheet and the subsequent rise in sea level during the last deglaciation. However, no direct proxy is currently available to document subglacial discharge from the AIS, which leaves significant gaps in our understanding of the complex interactions between subglacial discharge and ice-sheet stability. Here we present deep-sea coral 234U/238U records from the Drake Passage in the Southern Ocean to track subglacial discharge from the AIS. Our findings reveal distinctively higher seawater 234U/238U values from 15,400 to 14,000 years ago, corresponding to the period of the highest iceberg-rafted debris flux and the occurrence of the meltwater pulse 1A event. This correlation suggests a causal link between enhanced subglacial discharge, synchronous retreat of the AIS, and the rapid rise in sea levels. The enhanced subglacial discharge and subsequent AIS retreat appear to have been preconditioned by a stronger and warmer Circumpolar Deep Water, thus underscoring the critical role of oceanic heat in driving major ice-sheet retreat.

Abstract Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction into value-added multicarbon products offers a means to close the anthropogenic carbon cycle using renewable electricity. However, the unsatisfactory catalytic selectivity for multicarbon products severely hinders the practical application of this technology. In this paper, we report a cascade AgCu single-atom and nanoparticle electrocatalyst, in which Ag nanoparticles produce CO and AgCu single-atom alloys promote C-C coupling kinetics. As a result, a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94 ± 4% toward multicarbon products is achieved with the as-prepared AgCu single-atom and nanoparticle catalyst under ~720 mA cm−2 working current density at −0.65 V in a flow cell with alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that the high multicarbon product selectivity results from cooperation between AgCu single-atom alloys and Ag nanoparticles, wherein the Ag single-atom doping of Cu nanoparticles increases the adsorption energy of *CO on Cu sites due to the asymmetric bonding of the Cu atom to the adjacent Ag atom with a compressive strain.

Abstract Background Kinesin family member 4A (KIF4A) is upregulated in a variety of cancers. However, its expression and potential downstream targets in urothelial bladder carcinoma (UBC) remain unclear. Methods Expression data of KIF4A in UBC and noncancerous tissues were downloaded from the GEPIA database. Cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis of T24 and 5637 UBC cells were examined using wound healing, transwell, colony formation, CCK‐8, and flow cytometry assays. KIF4A and potential downstream genes were analyzed using qRT‐PCR, western blot analysis, and immunohistochemistry. Results In UBC samples, KIF4A expression was significantly higher than in corresponding noncancerous samples. UBC patients with high KIF4A expression had poor cancer‐specific survival and overall survival. Knockdown of KIF4A significantly inhibited proliferation and promoted apoptosis of UBC cells, accompanied by dephosphorylation of AKT and increased the protein level of proapoptotic factors. Additionally, knockdown of KIF4A reduced migration and invasion of UBC cells whereas overexpression of KIF4A exhibited opposite effects, along with altered protein level in epithelial‐mesenchymal transition‐related genes. Furthermore, overexpression of YAP1 promoted KIF4A expression whereas knockdown of YAP1 suppressed KIF4A expression in UBC cells. Alternatively, KIF4A knockdown reduced YAP1 nuclear protein level whereas KIF4A overexpression suppressed YAP1 phosphorylation and facilitated YAP1 nuclear translocation. Conclusions KIF4A upregulation correlates with poor prognosis of UBC. Knockdown of KIF4A inhibits proliferation, migration, and invasion of UBC cells while inducing apoptosis possibly through dephosphorylation of AKT, changes in EMT‐related genes, and interaction with YAP1.

Summary: Transposable elements (TEs) can provide ectopic promoters to drive the expression of oncogenes in cancer, a mechanism known as onco-exaptation. Onco-exaptation events have been extensively identified in various cancers, with bladder cancer showing a high frequency of onco-exaptation events (77%). However, the effect of most of these events in bladder cancer remains unclear. This study identified 44 onco-exaptation events in 44 bladder cancer cell lines in 137 RNA-seq datasets from six publicly available cohorts, with L1PA2 contributing the most events. L1PA2-SYT1, L1PA2-MET, and L1PA2-XCL1 had the highest frequency not only in cell lines but also in TCGA-BLCA samples. L1PA2-SYT1 showed significant tumor specificity and was found to be activated by CpG island demethylation in its promoter. The upregulation of L1PA2-SYT1 enhances the in vitro invasion of bladder cancer and is an independent risk factor for patient’s overall survival, suggesting L1PA2-SYT1 being an important event that promotes the development of bladder cancer.

Efficient oxygen evolution relies on the development of promising catalysts. Herein, the authors demonstrate that cobalt tetrahedra, stabilized over the surface of YBCo4O7 material, can catalyze oxygen evolution reaction efficiently.

With the rapidly increasing incidence of bladder cancer in China and worldwide, great efforts have been made to understand the detailed mechanism of bladder cancer tumorigenesis. Recently, the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitor-based immunotherapy has changed the treatment strategy for bladder cancer, especially for advanced bladder cancer, and has improved the survival of patients. The ubiquitin–proteasome system, which affects many biological processes, plays an important role in bladder cancer. Several E3 ubiquitin ligases and deubiquitinases target immune checkpoints, either directly or indirectly. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in E3 ubiquitin ligases and deubiquitinases in bladder cancer tumorigenesis and further highlight the implications for bladder cancer immunotherapies.

Glioblastoma is the most common primary intracranial tumor and is also one of the most malignant central nervous system tumors. Its characteristics, such as high malignancy, abundant tumor vasculature, drug resistance, and recurrence-prone nature, cause great suffering to glioma patients. Furthermore, glioma stem cells are the primordial cells of the glioma and play a central role in the development of glioma. Integrins—heterodimers composed of noncovalently bound a and ß subunits—are highly expressed in glioma stem cells and play an essential role in the self-renewal, differentiation, high drug resistance, and chemo-radiotherapy resistance of glioma stem cells through cell adhesion and signaling. However, there are various types of integrins, and their mechanisms of function on glioma stem cells are complex. Therefore, this article reviews the feasibility of treating gliomas by targeting integrins on glioma stem cells.

Abstract Background The radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLS) is very common in clinical settings; we aimed to evaluate the risk factors of RILI in NSCLS patients, to provide insights into the treatment of NSCLS. Methods NSCLC patients undergoing three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) in our hospital from June 1, 2018, to June 30, 2020, were included. The characteristics and treatments of RILI and non-RILI patients were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the risk factors of RILI in patients with NSCLC. Results A total of 126 NSCLC patients were included; the incidence of RILI in NSCLC patients was 35.71%. There were significant differences in diabetes, smoke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), concurrent chemotherapy, radiotherapy dose, and planning target volume (PTV) between the RILI group and the non-RILI group (all P < 0.05). Logistic regression analyses indicated that diabetes (OR 3.076, 95%CI 1.442~5.304), smoke (OR 2.745, 95%CI 1.288~4.613), COPD (OR 3.949, 95%CI 1.067~5.733), concurrent chemotherapy (OR 2.072, 95%CI 1.121~3.498), radiotherapy dose ≥ 60 Gy (OR 3.841, 95%CI 1.932~5.362), and PTV ≥ 396 (OR 1.247, 95%CI 1.107~1.746) were the independent risk factors of RILI in patients with NSCLC (all P < 0.05). Conclusions RILI is commonly seen in NSCLS patients; early targeted measures are warranted for patients with those risk factors; future studies with larger sample sizes and different areas are needed to further elucidate the influencing factors of RILI in the treatment of NSCLS.

Abstract Fe-based single-atomic site catalysts (SASCs), with the natural metalloproteases-like active site structure, have attracted widespread attention in biocatalysis and biosensing. Precisely, controlling the isolated single-atom Fe-N-C active site structure is crucial to improve the SASCs’ performance. In this work, we use a facile ion-imprinting method (IIM) to synthesize isolated Fe-N-C single-atomic site catalysts (IIM-Fe-SASC). With this method, the ion-imprinting process can precisely control ion at the atomic level and form numerous well-defined single-atomic Fe-N-C sites. The IIM-Fe-SASC shows better peroxidase-like activities than that of non-imprinted references. Due to its excellent properties, IIM-Fe-SASC is an ideal nanoprobe used in the colorimetric biosensing of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Using IIM-Fe-SASC as the nanoprobe, in situ detection of H2O2 generated from MDA-MB-231 cells has been successfully demonstrated with satisfactory sensitivity and specificity. This work opens a novel and easy route in designing advanced SASC and provides a sensitive tool for intracellular H2O2 detection.

BackgroundCopper ions are essential for cellular physiology. Cuproptosis is a novel method of copper-dependent cell death, and the cuproptosis-based signature for glioma remains less studied.MethodsSeveral glioma datasets with clinicopathological information were collected from TCGA, GEO and CGGA. Robust Multichip Average (RMA) algorithm was used for background correction and normalization, cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) were then collected. The TCGA-glioma cohort was clustered using ConsensusClusterPlus. Univariate Cox regression analysis and the Random Survival Forest model were performed on the differentially expressed genes to identify prognostic genes. The cuproptosis-signature was constructed by calculating CuproptosisScore using Multivariate Cox regression analysis. Differences in terms of genomic mutation, tumor microenvironment, and enrichment pathways were evaluated between high- or low-CuproptosisScore. Furthermore, drug response prediction was carried out utilizing pRRophetic.ResultsTwo subclusters based on CRGs were identified. Patients in cluster2 had better clinical outcomes. The cuproptosis-signature was constructed based on CuproptosisScore. Patients with higher CuproptosisScore had higher WHO grades and worse prognosis, while patients with lower grades were more likely to develop IDH mutations or MGMT methylation. Univariate and Multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated CuproptosisScore was an independent prognostic factor. The accuracy of the signature in prognostic prediction was further confirmed in 11 external validation datasets. In groups with high-CuproptosisScore, PIK3CA, MUC16, NF1, TTN, TP53, PTEN, and EGFR showed high mutation frequency. IDH1, TP53, ATRX, CIC, and FUBP1 demonstrated high mutation frequency in low-CuproptosisScore group. The level of immune infiltration increased as CuproptosisScore increased. SubMap analysis revealed patients with high-CuproptosisScore may respond to anti-PD-1 therapy. The IC50 values of Bexarotene, Bicalutamide, Bortezomib, and Cytarabine were lower in the high-CuproptosisScore group than those in the low-CuproptosisScore group. Finally, the importance of IGFBP2 in TCGA-glioma cohort was confirmed.ConclusionThe current study revealed the novel cuproptosis-based signature might help predict the prognosis, biological features, and appropriate treatment for patients with glioma.

Metal anode instability due to several intrinsic factors limits their widespread use in energy storage. Here, the authors report a 3D alloy anode via a universal alloy electrodeposition approach to overcome the anode instability issues and demonstrate a seawater-based aqueous battery.

Engineering atomically dispersed metal site catalysts with controlled local coordination environments and 3D nanostructures effectively improves the catalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), which are critical for clean energy conversion and chemical production. Herein, an innovative approach for preparing core−shell nanostructured catalysts with different single‐metal sites in the core and the shell, respectively, is developed. In particular, as the shell precursors, covalent organic polymers with a thin layered structure that is polymerized in situ and coated on a metal‐doped ZIF‐derived carbon core are used, followed by a controlled thermal activation. The selective combination and construction of different metal sites increase active site density in the surface layers, promote structural robustness, facilitate mass/charge transfer, and yield a possible synergy of active sites in the core and the shell. The p‐FeNC(shell)@CoNC(core), consisting of a polymerized FeTPPCl‐derived carbon layer (p‐FeNC) on a Co‐doped ZIF‐derived carbon (CoNC), exhibits remarkable ORR activity and stability in acidic media along with encouraging durability in H2–air fuel cells. Likewise, a p‐FeNC(shell)@NiNC(core) catalyst demonstrates outstanding CO2RR activity and stability. Hence, integrating two appropriate single‐metal sites in core and shell precursors, respectively, can modulate morphological and catalytic properties for a possible synergy toward different electrocatalysis processes.

BackgroundUrachal cancer is a rare neoplasm in the urological system. To our knowledge, no published study has explored to establish a model for predicting the prognosis of urachal cancer. The present study aims to develop and validate nomograms for predicting the prognosis of urachal cancer based on clinicopathological parameters.MethodsBased on the data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, 445 patients diagnosed with urachal cancer between 1975 and 2018 were identified as training and internal validation cohort; 84 patients diagnosed as urachal cancer from 2001 to 2020 in two medical centers were collected as external validation cohort. Nomograms were developed using a multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis in the training cohort, and their performance was evaluated in terms of its discriminative ability, calibration, and clinical usefulness by statistical analysis.ResultsThree nomograms based on tumor–node–metastasis (TNM), Sheldon and Mayo staging system were developed for predicting cancer-specific survival (CSS) of urachal cancer; these nomograms all showed similar calibration and discrimination ability. Further internal (c-index 0.78) and external (c-index 0.81) validation suggested that Sheldon model had superior discrimination and calibration ability in predicting CSS than the other two models. Moreover, we found that the Sheldon model was able to successfully classify patients into different risk of mortality both in internal and external validation cohorts. Decision curve analysis proved that the nomogram was clinically useful and applicable.ConclusionsThe nomogram model with Sheldon staging system was recommended for predicting the prognosis of urachal cancer. The proposed nomograms have promising clinical applicability to help clinicians on individualized patient counseling, decision-making, and clinical trial designing.

The identification of patients who would benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) before radical cystectomy (RC) remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the survival benefit of NAC prior to RC by comparing it to a similar cohort that underwent RC alone. The results confirmed a substantial survival benefit for patients with lymphovascular invasion in transurethral resection (TUR) specimens (LVI-positive), while no significant benefit of NAC was observed. Purpose: The survival benefit of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) before definitive radical cystectomy (RC) varied among patients, suggesting proper selection of patients for NAC to maximize the survival benefit. This study aimed to investigate the role of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in transurethral resection (TUR) specimens in selecting patients with MIBC for NAC. Methods: Two retrospective cohorts of patients with cT2-4aN0 MIBC who underwent RC from 2004 to 2015 provided by Lund University were included. Inverse probability weighting was applied to make the NAC-treated (NAC) and untreated (non-NAC) cohorts comparable. Survival benefits were estimated with Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models. The primary endpoint was cancer-specific survival (CSS). LVI in TUR specimens and molecular taxonomies (BASE47, UNC, and LundTax) were examined, and bulk RNA-seq datasets were explored for LVI-relevant signatures. Results: A total of 341 patients with cT2-4aN0 MIBC were included. The NAC cohort included 125 patients, whereas the non-NAC cohort included 216 patients. The 3-year CSS benefit of NAC was 7.1%. For patients with positive LVI in TUR specimens, the 3-year CSS benefit of NAC was 26.2% (48.1% vs. 74.3%), with a risk reduction of 56% (HR = 0.44, P = .03). A sensitivity analysis confirmed a significant interaction between LVI and NAC. This study failed to identify the molecular subtypes that maximized the survival benefit of NAC. Exploration of LVI-relevant signatures remains inconclusive. Conclusions: LVI in TUR specimens could help identify patients with MIBC who would derive maximal survival benefit from NAC. Abstract Nanoscale electrocatalysts have exhibited promising activity and stability, improving the kinetics of numerous electrochemical reactions in renewable energy systems such as electrolyzers, fuel cells, and metal-air batteries. Due to the size effect, nano particles with extreme small size have high surface areas, complicated morphology, and various surface terminations, which make them different from their bulk phases and often undergo restructuring during the reactions. These restructured materials are hard to probe by conventional ex-situ characterizations, thus leaving the true reaction centers and/or active sites difficult to determine. Nowadays, in situ techniques, particularly X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), have become an important tool to obtain oxidation states, electronic structure, and local bonding environments, which are critical to investigate the electrocatalysts under real reaction conditions. In this review, we go over the basic principles of XAS and highlight recent applications of in situ XAS in studies of nanoscale electrocatalysts.

While water splitting offers a carbon-neutral means to store energy, water oxidation is sluggish and corrosive over earth-abundant electrocatalysts. Here, authors show single ruthenium atoms over cobalt-iron layered double hydroxides to be effective and stable oxygen evolution electrocatalysts.

Abstract The development of an efficient electrocatalyst toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of significant importance in transforming renewable electricity to pure and clean hydrogen by water splitting. However, the construction of an active electrocatalyst with multiple sites that can promote the dissociation of water molecules still remains a great challenge. Herein, a partial‐single‐atom, partial‐nanoparticle composite consisting of nanosized ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles (NPs) and individual Ru atoms as an energy‐efficient HER catalyst in alkaline medium is reported. The formation of this unique composite mainly results from the dispersion of Ru NPs to small‐size NPs and single atoms (SAs) on the Fe/N codoped carbon (Fe–N–C) substrate due to the thermodynamic stability. The optimal catalyst exhibits an outstanding HER activity with an ultralow overpotential (9 mV) at 10 mA cm−2 (η10), a high turnover frequency (8.9 H2 s−1 at 50 mV overpotential), and nearly 100% Faraday efficiency, outperforming the state‐of‐the‐art commercial Pt/C and other reported HER electrocatalysts in alkaline condition. Both experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the coexistence of Ru NPs and SAs can improve the hydride coupling and water dissociation kinetics, thus synergistically enhancing alkaline hydrogen evolution performance.

Single-atom nanozymes (SANs) possess unique features of maximum atomic utilization and present highly assembled enzyme-like structure and remarkable enzyme-like activity. By introducing SANs into immunoassay, limitations of ELISA such as low stability of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) can be well addressed, thereby improving the performance of the immunoassays. In this work, we have developed novel Fe-N-C single-atom nanozymes (Fe-Nx SANs) derived from Fe-doped polypyrrole (PPy) nanotube and substituted the enzymes in ELISA kit for enhancing the detection sensitivity of amyloid beta 1-40. Results indicate that the Fe-Nx SANs contain high density of single-atom active sites and comparable enzyme-like properties as HRP, owing to the maximized utilization of Fe atoms and their abundant active sites, which could mimic natural metalloproteases structures. Further designed SAN-linked immunosorbent assay (SAN-LISA) demonstrates the ultralow limit of detection (LOD) of 0.88 pg/mL, much more sensitive than that of commercial ELISA (9.98 pg/mL). The results confirm that the Fe-Nx SANs can serve as a satisfactory replacement of enzyme labels, which show great potential as an ultrasensitive colorimetric immunoassay.

Emulating angstrom-scale dynamics of the highly selective biological ion channels is a challenging task. Recent work on angstrom-scale artificial channels has expanded our understanding of ion transport and uptake mechanisms under confinement. However, the role of chemical environment in such channels is still not well understood. Here, we report the anomalously enhanced transport and uptake of ions under confined MoS2-based channels that are ~five angstroms in size. The ion uptake preference in the MoS2-based channels can be changed by the selection of surface functional groups and ion uptake sequence due to the interplay between kinetic and thermodynamic factors that depend on whether the ions are mixed or not prior to uptake. Our work offers a holistic picture of ion transport in 2D confinement and highlights ion interplay in this regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Methane hydrates are widely distributed along continental margins, representing a potential source of methane to the ocean and atmosphere, possibly influencing Earth's climate. Yet, little is known about the response of methane hydrates to global climate change, especially at the timescale of glacial-interglacial cycles. Here we present a chronology of methane seepage from seep carbonates derived from a series of tens to hundreds of meters long hydrate-bearing sediment records from the South China Sea, drilled at water depths of 664-871 m. We find that six out of seven episodes of intense methane seepage during the last 440,000 years were related to hydrate dissociation, all coinciding with major interglacials, the so-called Marine Isotope Stages 1, 5e, 7c, 9c, and 11c. Using numerical modeling, we show that these events of methane hydrate instability were possibly triggered by the rapid warming of intermediate waters by ~2.5-3.5 °C in the South China Sea. This finding provides direct evidence for the sensitivity of the deep marine methane hydrate reservoir to glacial-interglacial climatic and oceanographic cyclicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
