Abstract Background Violence against health professionals is a growing problem that affects the quality of care provided and the well-being of workers. In the Alentejo region (Southern Portugal), the Regional Health Administration has been developing strategies to prevent and combat this phenomenon, namely, through the implementation of the Action Plan for the Prevention of Violence in the Health Sector. Violence in the health sector includes all situations in which a worker in the Ministry of Health's health institutions is exposed to any type of violence related to their work, putting their safety, well-being or health at risk, or that of others. The aim of this study was to analyze the perceptions and practices of local focal points (e.g.,departments, services, offices or functional units) on violence against health professionals in the Alentejo region. Methods Semi-structured interviews were carried out local focal points in the Alentejo region. The sampling was selected for convenience from different health units. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed according to the analysis protocol of the IRaMuTeQ software (Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires) version 0.7 alpha 2. Results In total, 43 interviews were conducted between February and April 2024. Interviews revealed that local focal points face various challenges in combating violence against health workers. The lack of specific training, the scarcity of security resources and the culture of underreporting were some of the obstacles identified. However, participants also stressed the importance of teamwork, effective communication and institutional support in dealing with this problem. Conclusions Violence against health professionals is a worrying reality that requires effective measures to prevent and combat it, requiring a coordinated and multifaceted response. Local focal points play a key role in this process, but they need adequate training, resources and institutional support. Comprehensive and regular training programs on violence, interpersonal communication and conflict management, and investment in security resources, including physical and technological measures, should be implemented in health facilities. Clear protocols should be created for dealing with situations of violence and a culture of reporting situations of violence to health professionals should be promoted, as well as the monitoring of victims by the authorities involved in cases of violence. Ongoing training and the simulation of real-life scenarios are crucial for preparing professionals to effectively manage situations of violence.

Background: Violence against health professionals is a global and growing problem, with significant impacts on the quality of care and the mental health of workers. Objectives: To analyze the level of knowledge, reporting practices and consequences of violence against health professionals in the Alentejo region (southern Portugal). Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional study involving 440 health professionals (doctors and nurses). Data were collected using an online platform and a structured questionnaire created specifically for this study. In the statistical analysis, the data were described as counts and proportions and the X2 test was used considering a significance level of 0.05. Results: This study reveals that violence against health professionals in the southern region of Portugal is a frequent problem (40%), with a higher incidence among nurses (80%). Despite awareness of the existence and functioning of reporting channels, reporting is low (52%). The main causes are related to the health system, professionals and users. The consequences include mental health problems and a reduction in the quality of care provided. Suggested measures to combat violence include improving security, training and punishing aggressors. Conclusions: This study reveals that violence against health professionals in the southern region of Portugal is a frequent, under-reported problem with serious consequences for professionals and the quality of care.

Taking into account the growing increase in the political and social interest in childbirth, it is critical to identify and explore the instruments that allow and enhance its humanization today. The use of vocalization seems to be a powerful and empowering tool for a positive birthing experience when used by women in labour. A scoping review will be developed to map the evidence and knowledge about women’s vocalization in the first and second stages of labour using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The search will be carried out on the Web of Science, EBSCOhost Research Platform (selecting Academic Search Complete, MedicLatina, Cinahl plus with full text, Medline with full text), Willey Online Library, PubMed and Scopus. The National Register of Theses and Dissertations and the Open Scientific Repository of Portugal will also be taken into account. Three reviewers will conduct data analysis, extraction and synthesis independently. The outcomes pretend to be a source for identifying the use of vocalization by women in labour, in order to guide further research on the subject. This study was prospectively registered with the Open Science Framework on the 21 May 2024, with registration number DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/Z58F4.

Enquadramento: Em tempo de pandemia, as consultas de enfermagem de vigilância da gravidez sofreram alterações, nomeadamente na restrição de acompanhantes. Por esse motivo, é importante a avaliação da satisfação das grávidas com a assistência de enfermagem durante este contexto pandémico. Objetivo: Avaliar a satisfação da grávida com a assistência das enfermeiras obstétricas nas consultas de vigilância da gravidez durante o contexto de pandemia COVID-19. Metodologia: Estudo transversal descritivo de natureza quantitativa, com uma amostra de 196 grávidas. Aplicado a Escala de Satisfação dos Pacientes com a Assistência de Enfermagem (General Practice Nurse Satisfaction Scale - GPNS), constituída pelas dimensões: relacionamento interpessoal e comunicação, confiança, credibilidade e dedicação. Resultados: As grávidas apresentam-se em média mais satisfeitas na dimensão relacionamento interpessoal e comunicação e menos satisfeitas na dimensão dedicação. Conclusão: As grávidas apresentam-se satisfeitas com a assistência de enfermagem percecionando a sua importância. Tal reforça a pertinência das consultas serem realizadas por um Enfermeiro Especialista em Enfermagem de Saúde Materna e Obstétrica.

Throughout their life, women should pay attention to their mental health. Evidence indicates that poor sleep quality is related to depressive symptoms in pregnancy, justifying the intervention of health professionals in improving sleep quality to promote the mental health of pregnant women. The objective of our study is to analyze the relationship between sleep quality and perinatal depression, and to identify the obstetric nurse’s intervention in improving sleep quality in the perinatal period. A total of 53 pregnant women between the 28th week of pregnancy and the 7th day after delivery completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Women were also asked about the strategies used by the obstetric nurse to improve their quality of sleep. Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics software, version 25.0. The Mann–Whitney-U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were carried out. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The median PSQI score was 10 (±3.63), and 9.2% (n = 9) had good quality sleep. The median EPDS score was 12 (±4.43), and 27 participants (50.9%) had probable depression. The women with likely depression had worse sleep quality (p = 0.016). Most participants reported that the obstetric nurse showed no interest in their sleep quality during pregnancy. Women of other nationalities have a higher risk of depression (p = 0.013). Based on our results, it is crucial to assess sleep quality in the perinatal period to promote women’s health during the prenatal and postnatal periods, and more action is needed since we are facing one of the most significant challenges of this century, preventing depression.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar o desenvolvimento e a mobilização de competências relacionais, centrais no processo de cuidar, pelo estudante de enfermagem ao longo do seu processo de formação. Método: estudo descritivo-correlacional de abordagem quantitativa. A amostra foi constituída pelos estudantes do curso de enfermagem de uma Escola Superior de Saúde, no litoral de Portugal e os dados foram coletados através do Inventário de Competências Relacionais de Ajuda, já testado. Resultados: os estudantes adquirem gradualmente as competências genéricas, competências de comunicação e competências de contacto, atingindo a média mais alta no último ano do curso, enquanto na subescala competências empáticas os estudantes do 2º ano apresentam um valor médio superior. Conclusão: a idade e o ano do curso são variáveis decisivas na aquisição de competências específicas (empáticas e comunicação) pelos estudantes de enfermagem.
