3. College Students and the Rhetorical Dissent Goal: Associations between Dissent Goal, Dissent Target, and Perceptions of Instructor Power

Abstract

Some college students who experience discontent with the instructional experience engage in a complaining and problem-solving behavior called "instructional dissent." Three types of dissent have been identified: rhetorical, expressive, and vengeful. Student perceptions of "instructor power" influence if and how students dissent. This study explored the relationship between instructor power and rhetorical dissent. Previous studies measured rhetorical dissent as a single variable incorporating the goal for dissenting and the target for dissent expression, using the instructor in the class as the only target. This study measured dissent goal and dissent target as separate variables and included the instructor in the class and other targets for dissent expression. University undergraduates ( N = 713) completing an online survey were asked to recall a very disappointing instructional experience and then asked questions that measured their perceptions of instructor power, their goal(s) for pursuing dissent, and the individuals they targeted with their expressions of dissent. French and Raven's (1959) five bases of social power were used to measure instructor power. Reward and legitimate power were negatively associated with the rhetorical dissent goal while coercive power was positively associated with this goal. The rhetorical dissent goal was positively associated with the dissent targets "this professor," "administration," and "another professor." Abstract

The Teacher Quality Toolkit addresses the continuum of teacher learning by providing tools that can be used to improve both preservice, and inservice teacher education. Each chapter provides self assessment tools that can guide progress toward improved teacher quality and describes resources for designing exemplary programs and practices. Chapters 2 and 3 are self contained, so that leaders of higher education institutions and school/district leaders may separately consider the information of most interest to them independently of each other. However it is recommended that district and school leaders and leaders of higher education institutions use the tools and resources together as suggested in Chapter 4, which describes resources for designing exemplary school-university partnerships. 5. The Influence of Standards on K-12 Teaching and Student Learning: A Research Synthesis

Abstract

This report is the fourth research synthesis that Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), the Regional Educational Laboratory for the Central Region states, has conducted in its laboratory leadership area of standards-based educational practice. The goals for the current research synthesis are: (1) To identify a comprehensive collection of studies on standards-based education, gathered through a structured search process and screened for relevance and research quality; (2) To describe and analyze these studies through a systematic review that examines teacher and student outcomes in relation to the variables of standards-based curriculum, standards-based instructional guidelines, and standards-based assessment; and (3) To describe the implications of study findings for researchers, education administrators, and policymakers. This synthesis is organized into six chapters. Chapter 1 describes the research problem and conceptual framework, provides background information on standards-based education, and discusses prior research. Chapter 2 describes the methods used to search the literature, code the studies, and synthesize results. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 review research on the influences of standards-based curriculum, standards-based instructional guidelines, and standards-based assessment, respectively. Chapter 6 summarizes the findings across the studies of the three variables and provides general conclusions. Appendices include additional details on the literature searches, the instrument used to code the studies, and tables of the reviewed studies. The tables describe in detail the characteristics, methods, and findings of the studies and serve as an annotated bibliography. 9. Student Perceptions of School Climate: A Validity and Data Use Study of a District-Developed Survey

Abstract

Over the past 25 years, researchers have consistently reported that students' perceptions of their school's climate can have a measurable impact on their level of engagement in school, motivation to learn, social development, and, ultimately, their academic achievement. In light of the continued emphasis on education reform and school accountability, the ability to accurately measure the learning environment, interpret the results from that measure, and then determine the appropriate course of action in addressing areas of concern has become increasingly important for school leaders. This dissertation used an embedded mixed methods design to examine one district's self-developed measure of their students' perceptions of school climate in order to determine if there was sufficient validity and reliability evidence for results to be used by school leadership (i.e., principals) to make data-driven decisions regarding implementing initiatives and interventions for improving or enhancing the school climate. Additionally, the measure was examined for variations in results for specific groups of students based on their grade level, gender, and ethnicity. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted, along with reliability analysis and invariance testing. Because the purpose of the survey was to obtain data on school climate that could then be examined and used to make decisions, interviews with school leadership team members were conducted to provide insight into how they had used previous data reports and how a new reporting structure (i.e., by factor) would impact their use of the data. Overall, results from the quantitative analyses found the EFA results indicated over half of the survey items were not functioning the way in which they were intended. With these items removed, a three factor CFA model was conducted to determine if there was appropriate model fit as well as invariance across gender, grade level, and ethnicity. The CFA model fit statistics were acceptable and the invariance tests held across each group however, further revisions of the instrument are recommended in order to develop a measure that will address the needs expressed during the school leadership interviews and will also accurately reflect students' experiences in their school. Interviews revealed limited use of the data reports from the survey due to lack of time, length of the reports, and absence of district guidance on how to use student results to make program decisions. Abstract

'ND Frohberg' (Reg. no. CV‐1200, PI 698310) is a hard‐red spring wheat (HRSW; Triticum aestivum L.) developed at North Dakota State University (NDSU) and released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (NDAES) in 2020. ND Frohberg was selected from the cross ND709‐9/ND2902. ND709‐9 was an experimental line with the pedigree (ND 2709/3/'Grandin'*3//'Ramsey'/ND 622). ND2902 was an experimental line with the pedigree (ND674//ND2710/ND688). It was tested as experimental line NDHRS16‐13‐97 and released because of improved straw strength, yield potential, strong disease resistance and end‐use quality. ND Frohberg is highly resistant to stem rust (caused by Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici), and moderately resistant to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina), bacterial leaf streak (caused by Xanthomonas translucens pv. undulosa), and Fusarium head blight (caused by Fusarium graminearum). The name ND Frohberg was chosen to honor Dr. Richard Frohberg, hard red spring wheat breeder at NDSU for 37 years. During his tenure at NDSU, Dr. Frohberg's varieties were widely cultivated, reaching as much as 65% of the acreage in North Dakota in 2003. He was responsible for the cross that resulted in this variety. Abstract

'ND Victory' (Reg. no. CV‐31, PI 701908) is the first semi‐leafless, green cotyledon field pea cultivar (Pisum sativum L.) developed by the North Dakota State University Pulse Crops Breeding Program and approved for release by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. It has white flowers, opaque seed coat, and smooth, round seed. It is semi‐dwarf, with lodging score of 3.3/9 and canopy height of 57 cm. Based on 30 environments (location‐year) of replicated yield trials in North Dakota, seed yield of ND Victory (2847 kg ha−1) was similar to commercial cultivar 'CDC Striker' (2819 kg ha−1) but significantly greater than 'Cruiser' (2653 kg ha−1) and 'Aragorn' (2639 kg ha−1) by 7.3 and 7.9%, respectively. ND Victory was also tested across 14 environments in Montana, where it had an average seed yield of 3264 kg ha−1, which was similar to 'Hampton' (3355 kg ha−1) but significantly greater than Aragorn (3110 kg ha−1) by 4.9%. ND Victory matures in approximately 90 days. ND Victory is a high protein cultivar, with protein content of 25.2%, exceeding the premium protein threshold of 24%. ND Victory (20%) is resistant to powdery mildew and performed similarly with resistant check 'Spider' (15%) and had significantly lower disease severity than 'Salamanca' (97%, susceptible check) and CDC Striker (82%). In irrigated field trials conducted under high Ascochyta blight pressure, ND Victory (5%) had lower disease severity than 'AC Agassiz' (10%) and CDC Striker (14%). ND Victory and CDC Striker exhibited similar response but significantly lower severity than AC Agassiz to Fusarium root rot inoculated with multiple Fusarium species pathogenic to pea. 29. Developing Collective Training for Small Unmanned Aerial Systems Employment

Abstract

The projected use of small unmanned aerial systems (SUAS) in military operations will produce training requirements which go beyond current capabilities. The paper describes the development of prototype training procedures and accompanying research simulations to address this need. We initially constructed a testbed to develop simulation-based training for an SUAS operator equipped with a simulated vertical-lift and land SUAS. However, the required training will go beyond merely training an operator how to pilot an SUAS. In addition to tactics, techniques, and procedures for employment of SUASs, collective training methods must be trained. Moreover, the leader of a unit equipped with SUAS will need to learn how to plan missions which incorporate the SUAS, and take into account air space and frequency management considerations. The demands of the task require the leader to allocate personnel to the SUAS mission, communicate and coordinate with those personnel during the mission, and make use of the information provided. To help address these training issues, we expanded our research testbed to include a command and control node (C2 node), to enable communications between a leader and the SUAS operator. In addition, we added a virtual environment in which dismounted infantry missions can be conducted. This virtual environment provides the opportunity for interactions among human-controlled avatars and non-player characters (NPCs), plus authoring tools to construct scenarios. Using these NPCs, a collective exercise involving friendly, enemy, and civilian personnel can be conducted without the need for a human role-player for every entity. We will describe the results of our first experiment, which examined the ability of players to negotiate use of the C2 node and the virtual environment at the same time, in order to see if this is a feasible combination of tools for training development.

Abstract

CD40/CD154-interaction is critical in the development of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE; mouse model of Multiple Sclerosis). Culprit CD4(+)CD40(+) T cells drive a more severe form of EAE than conventional CD4 T cells. Blocking CD40/CD154-interaction with CD154-antibody prevents or ameliorates disease but had thrombotic complications in clinical trials. We targeted CD40 using a CD154-sequence based peptide. Peptides in human therapeutics demonstrate good safety. A small peptide, KGYY(6), ameliorates EAE when given as pretreatment or at first symptoms. KGYY(6) binds Th40 and memory T cells, affecting expression of CD69 and IL-10 in the CD4 T cell compartment, ultimately hampering disease development.

Abstract

'ND Dawn' (Reg. no. CV‐30, PI 694866), a semi‐dwarf, semi‐leafless, large‐seeded yellow field pea (Pisum sativum L.) cultivar, was developed by the pulse crops breeding program at North Dakota State University and approved for release by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. ND Dawn, the first yellow field pea cultivar from the program, was developed by the bulk‐pedigree method. Based on 18 environments (location‐years) of yield trials across North Dakota, ND Dawn had similar seed yield (2,843 kg ha−1) with the commercial yellow pea cultivars 'AC Agassiz' (2,875 kg ha−1) and 'DS Admiral' (2,799 kg ha−1) but significantly greater than 'CDC Golden' (2,633 kg ha−1). ND Dawn was also tested across eight environments in Montana, where it had an average seed yield of 3,803 kg ha−1, which was significantly greater than 'Delta' (3,554 kg ha−1) but similar to DS Admiral (3,686 kg ha−1) or AC Agassiz (3,565 kg ha−1). ND Dawn matures in approximately 94 d. It is resistant to lodging, with a plant height index of 0.66. It has uniform round seed, with size larger than Agassiz, a medium‐seeded yellow pea cultivar. ND Dawn's protein content, 24%, is acceptable to get a premium price in the current market for high‐protein pea. ND Dawn and AC Agassiz exhibited similar responses to Fusarium root rot based on a field trial inoculated with multiple Fusarium species pathogenic to pea. In an irrigated field trial conducted under high Ascochyta blight pressure, ND Dawn yielded similarly to AC Agassiz and 'CDC Striker' despite having a higher leaf necrosis percentage. Abstract

The effect of restricting maximum cruise altitude on the mission performance of two supersonic transport concepts across a selection of cruise Mach numbers is studied. Results indicate that a trapezoidal wing concept can be competitive with an arrow wing depending on the altitude and Mach number constraints imposed. The higher wing loading of trapezoidal wing configurations gives them an appreciably lower average cruise altitude than the lower wing loading of the arrow wing configurations, and this advantage increases as the maximum allowable cruise altitude is reduced.
