Using the six years of the spectroscopic monitoring of the luminous quasar HE 0435-4312 ($z=1.2231$) with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), in combination with the photometric data (CATALINA, OGLE, SALTICAM, and BMT), we determined the rest-frame time-delay of $296^{+13}_{-14}$ days between the MgII broad-line emission and the ionizing continuum using seven different time-delay inference methods. Artefact time-delay peaks and aliases were mitigated using the bootstrap method, prior weighting probability function as well as by analyzing unevenly sampled mock light curves. The MgII emission is considerably variable with the fractional variability of $\sim 5.4\%$, which is comparable to the continuum variability ($\sim 4.8\%$). Because of its high luminosity ($L_{3000}=10^{46.4}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$), the source is beneficial for a further reduction of the scatter along the MgII-based radius-luminosity relation and its extended versions, especially when the high-accreting subsample that has an RMS scatter of $\sim 0.2$ dex is considered. This opens up a possibility to use the high-accretor MgII-based radius-luminosity relation for constraining cosmological parameters. Simple Summary While the intratumor microbiome has been largely unexplored in relation to prostate cancer development, our research shows that microbes may play an anti-tumor or pro-tumor role to significantly alter clinical course in prostate cancer patients. We found that the presence and absence of specific microbes are strongly correlated with known biomarkers of prostate cancer, including increased androgen receptor expression, prostate-specific antigen level, immune-associated gene dysregulation, stem-cell related gene overexpression, cancer pathways, and known chromosomal alterations. Our results provide important insight on potential mechanisms by which intratumor microbes may greatly contribute to prostate cancer progression and prognosis. We hope our results can be validated in future studies, and the key microbes that we identified can be used as effective targets for more specialized prebiotic and probiotic treatments for prostate cancer. Abstract Although 1 in 9 American men will receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer (PC), most men with this diagnosis will not die from it, as most PCs are indolent. However, there is a subset of patients in which the once-indolent PC becomes metastatic and eventually, fatal. In this study, we analyzed microbial compositions of intratumor bacteria in PC to determine the influence of the microbiome on metastatic growth. Using large-scale RNA-sequencing data and corresponding clinical data, we correlated the abundance of microbes to immune pathways and PC risk factors, identifying specific microbes that either significantly deter or contribute to cancer aggressiveness. Interestingly, most of the microbes we found appeared to play anti-tumor roles in PC. Since these anti-tumor microbes were overrepresented in tumor samples, we believe that microbes thrive in the tumor microenvironment, outcompete cancer cells, and directly mitigate tumor growth by recruiting immune cells. These include Listeria monocytogenes, Methylobacterium radiotolerans JCM 2831, Xanthomonas albilineans GPE PC73, and Bradyrhizobium japonicum, which are negatively correlated with Gleason score, Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) stage, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, and Androgen Receptor (AR) expression, respectively. We also identified microbes that contribute to tumor growth and are positively correlated with genomic alterations, dysregulated immune-associated (IA) genes, and prostate cancer stem cells (PCSC) genes.

We present the monitoring of the AGN continuum and MgII broad line emission for the quasar HE 0413-4031 ($z=1.38$) based on the six-year monitoring by the South African Large Telescope (SALT). We managed to estimate a time-delay of $302.6^{+28.7}_{-33.1}$ days in the rest frame of the source using seven different methods: interpolated cross-correlation function (ICCF), discrete correlation function (DCF), $z$-transformed DCF, JAVELIN, two estimators of data regularity (Von Neumann, Bartels), and $\chi^2$ method. This time-delay is below the value expected from the standard radius-luminosity relation. However, based on the monochromatic luminosity of the source and the SED modelling, we interpret this departure as the shortening of the time-delay due to the higher accretion rate of the source, with the inferred Eddington ratio of $\sim 0.4$. The MgII line luminosity of HE 0413-4031 responds to the continuum variability as $L_{\rm line}\propto L_{\rm cont}^{0.43\pm 0.10}$, which is consistent with the light-travel distance of the location of MgII emission at $R_{\rm out} \sim 10^{18}\,{\rm cm}$. Using the data of 10 other quasars, we confirm the radius-luminosity relation for broad MgII line, which was previously determined for broad H$\beta$ line for lower-redshift sources. In addition, we detect a general departure of higher-accreting quasars from this relation in analogy to H$\beta$ sample. We report photometry and spectroscopy of the outburst of the young stellar object ESO-Halpha 99. The outburst was first noticed in Gaia alert Gaia18dvc and later by ATLAS. We have established the outburst light curve with archival ATLAS ``Orange'' filter photometry, Gaia data, new V-band photometry, and J, H, and K_s photometry from IRIS and UKIRT. The brightness has fluctuated several times near the light curve maximum. The TESS satellite observed ESO-Halpha 99 with high cadence during one of these minor minima and found brightness fluctuations on timescales of days and hours. Imaging with UKIRT shows the outline of an outflow cavity, and we find one knot of H_2 1-0 S(1) emission, now named MHO 1520, on the symmetry axis of this nebula, indicating recent collimated outflow activity from ESO-Halpha 99. Its pre-outburst SED shows a flat FIR spectrum, confirming its early evolutionary state and its similarity to other deeply embedded objects in the broader EXor class. The pre-outburst luminosity is 34 L_sun, a much higher luminosity than typical EXors, indicating that ESO-Halpha 99 may be a star of intermediate mass. Infrared and optical spectroscopy show a rich emission line spectrum, including HI lines, strong red CaII emission, as well as infrared CO bandhead emission, all characteristic EXors in the broadest sense. Comparison of the present spectra with an optical spectrum obtained in 1993, presumably in the quiescent state of the object, shows that during the present outburst the continuum component of the spectrum has increased notably more than the emission lines. Using the Herschel Space Observatory we have observed a representative sample of 87 powerful 3CR sources at redshift z < 1. The far-infrared (FIR, 70-500 micron) photometry is combined with mid-infrared (MIR) photometry from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and catalogued data to analyse the complete spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of each object from optical to radio wavelength. To disentangle the contributions of different components, the SEDs are fitted with a set of templates to derive the luminosities of host galaxy starlight, dust torus emission powered by active galactic nuclei (AGN) and cool dust heated by stars. The level of emission from relativistic jets is also estimated, in order to isolate the thermal host galaxy contribution. The new data are in line with the orientation-based unification of high-excitation radio-loud AGN, in that the dust torus becomes optically thin longwards of 30 micron. The low excitation radio galaxies and the MIR weak sources represent MIR- and FIR-faint AGN population different from the high-excitation MIR-bright objects; it remains an open question whether they are at a later evolutionary state or an intrinsically different population. The derived luminosities for host starlight and dust heated by star formation are converted to stellar masses and star formation rates (SFR). The host-normalized SFR of the bulk of the 3CR sources is low when compared to other galaxy populations at the same epoch. Estimates of the dust mass yield a 1--100 times lower dust/stellar mass ratio than for the Milky Way, indicating that these 3CR hosts have very low levels of interstellar matter explaining the low level of star formation. We monitored the recent FUor 2MASS J06593158-0405277 (V960 Mon) since November 2009 at various observatories and multiple wavelengths. After the outburst by nearly 2.9 mag in $r$ around September 2014 the brightness gently fades until April 2015 by nearly 1 mag in $U$ and 0.5 mag in $z$. Thereafter the brightness at $\lambda>5000 \AA$ was constant until June 2015 while the shortest wavelengths ($U, B$) indicate a new rise, similar to that seen for the FUor V2493 Cyg (HBC722). Our near-infrared (NIR) monitoring between December 2014 and April 2015 shows a smaller outburst amplitude ($\sim$2 mag) and a smaller (0.2 $-$ 0.3 mag) post-outburst brightness decline. Optical and NIR color-magnitude diagrams indicate that the brightness decline is caused by growing extinction. The post-outburst light curves are modulated by an oscillating color-neutral pattern with a period of about 17 days and an amplitude declining from $\sim$0.08 mag in October 2014 to $\sim$0.04 mag in May 2015. The properties of the oscillating pattern lead us to suggest the presence of a close binary with eccentric orbit.

New $B$- and $V$-band monitoring in 2014 $-$ 2015 reveals that the Seyfert 1 Galaxy, 3C120, has brightened by a magnitude of $1.4$, compared to our campaign that took place in 2009 $-$ 2010. This allowed us to check for the debated luminosity and time-dependent color variations claimed for SDSS quasars. For our 3C120 data, we find that the $B/V$ flux ratio of the variable component in the bright epoch is indistinguishable from the faint one. We do not find any color variability on different timescales ranging from about $1$ to $1800$ days. We suggest that the luminosity and time-dependent color variability is an artifact caused by analyzing the data in magnitudes instead of fluxes. The flux variation gradients of both epochs yield consistent estimates of the host galaxy contribution to our 7.5" aperture. The unification model for powerful radio galaxies and radio-loud quasars postulates that these objects are intrinsically the same but viewed along different angles. Herschel Space Observatory data permit the assessment of that model in the far-infrared spectral window. We analyze photometry from Spitzer and Herschel for the distant 3CR hosts, and find that radio galaxies and quasars have different mid-infrared, but indistinguishable far-infrared colors. Both these properties, the former being orientation dependent and the latter orientation invariant, are in line with expectations from the unification model. Adding powerful radio-quiet active galaxies and typical massive star-forming galaxies to the analysis, we demonstrate that infrared colors not only provide an orientation indicator, but can also distinguish active from star-forming galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. Only a dozen confirmed FU Orionis-type young outbursting stars (FUors) are known today; this explains the interest in the recent FUor eruption of 2MASS J06593158-0405277. Its outburst and expected decline will be subject to numerous studies in the future. Almost equally important for the understanding of the eruption mechanism, however, is the physical characterization of the FUor's precursor. Here we analyze unpublished archival data and summarize - and partly revise - all relevant photometry from optical to submillimeter wavelengths. Our analysis implies that the FUor is possibly associated with eight T Tauri star candidates and a strong Class 0 source. Adopting a distance of 450 pc for the FUor, we derive a quiescent bolometric luminosity and temperature of L_bol = 4.8 L_Sun and T_bol = 1190 K, typical for young Class II sources. The central star has a temperature of T_eff = 4000 K, a mass of 0.75 M_Sun, and an age of about 6 x 10^5 yr. The SED implies a circumstellar mass of 0.01 - 0.06 M_Sun, and the system is surrounded by a faint infrared nebulosity. We present Herschel (PACS and SPIRE) far-infrared (FIR) photometry of a complete sample of z>1 3CR sources, from the Herschel GT project The Herschel Legacy of distant radio-loud AGN (PI: Barthel). Combining these with existing Spitzer photometric data, we perform an infrared (IR) spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis of these landmark objects in extragalactic research to study the star formation in the hosts of some of the brightest active galactic nuclei (AGN) known at any epoch. Accounting for the contribution from an AGN-powered warm dust component to the IR SED, about 40% of our objects undergo episodes of prodigious, ULIRG-strength star formation, with rates of hundreds of solar masses per year, coeval with the growth of the central supermassive black hole. Median SEDs imply that the quasar and radio galaxy hosts have similar FIR properties, in agreement with the orientation-based unification for radio-loud AGN. The star-forming properties of the AGN hosts are similar to those of the general population of equally massive non-AGN galaxies at comparable redshifts, thus there is no strong evidence of universal quenching of star formation (negative feedback) within this sample. Massive galaxies at high redshift may be forming stars prodigiously, regardless of whether their supermassive black holes are accreting or not., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. We present results from a survey of 70 radio galaxies (RGs) at redshifts 12.5 are higher than the sSFR of typical star-forming galaxies over the same redshift range but are similar or perhaps lower than the galaxy population for RGs at z, Comment: 37 pages, accepted to A&A

We investigate the narrow-line region (NLR) of two radio-quiet QSOs, PG1012+008 and PG1307+085, using high signal-to-noise spatially resolved long-slit spectra obtained with FORS1 at the Very Large Telescope. Although the emission is dominated by the point-spread function of the nuclear source, we are able to detect extended NLR emission out to several kpc scales in both QSOs by subtracting the scaled central spectrum from outer spectra. In contrast to the nuclear spectrum, which shows a prominent blue wing and a broad line profile of the [O III] line, the extended emission reveals no clear signs of large scale outflows. Exploiting the wide wavelength range, we determine the radial change of the gas properties in the NLR, i.e., gas temperature, density, and ionization parameter, and compare them with those of Seyfert galaxies and type-II QSOs. The QSOs have higher nuclear temperature and lower electron density than Seyferts, but show no significant difference compared to type-II QSOs, while the ionization parameter decreases with radial distance, similar to the case of Seyfert galaxies. For PG1012+008, we determine the stellar velocity dispersion of the host galaxy. Summary Background and objectives Dialysis patients are at high risk for low-trauma bone fracture. Bone density measurements using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) do not reliably differentiate between patients with and without fractures. The aim of this study was to identify differences in bone microarchitecture between patients with and without a history of fracture using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT). Design, setting, participants, & measurements Seventy-four prevalent hemodialysis patients were recruited for measurements of areal bone mineral density (aBMD) by DXA and bone microarchitecture by HR-pQCT. Patients with a history of trauma-related fracture were excluded. Forty healthy volunteers served as controls. Blood levels of parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, and markers of bone turnover were determined. Results Dialysis patients, particularly women, had markedly impaired bone microarchitecture. Patients with fractures had significantly reduced cortical and trabecular microarchitecture compared with patients without fractures. aBMD tended to be lower in patients with fractures, but differences were statistically not significant. The strongest determinant of fracture was the HR-pQCT-measured trabecular density of the tibia, which also had the highest discriminatory power to differentiate patients according to fracture status. Radial DXA had a lower discriminatory power than trabecular density. Conclusions Bone microarchitecture is severely impaired in dialysis patients and even more so in patients with a history of fracture. Background: NFkB signaling is of paramount importance in the regulation of apoptosis, proliferation, and inflammatory responses during human development and homeostasis, as well as in many human cancers. Receptor Tyrosine Kinases (RTKs), including the Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptors (FGFRs) are also important in development and disease. However, a direct relationship between growth factor signaling pathways and NFkB activation has not been previously described, although FGFs have been known to antagonize TNFa-induced apoptosis. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here, we demonstrate an interaction between FGFR4 and IKKb (Inhibitor of NFkB Kinase b subunit), an essential component in the NFkB pathway. This novel interaction was identified utilizing a yeast two-hybrid screen [1] and confirmed by coimmunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry analysis. We demonstrate tyrosine phosphorylation of IKKb in the presence of activated FGFR4, but not kinase-dead FGFR4. Following stimulation by TNFa (Tumor Necrosis Factor a) to activate NFkB pathways, FGFR4 activation results in significant inhibition of NFkB signaling as measured by decreased nuclear NFkB localization, by reduced NFkB transcriptional activation in electophoretic mobility shift assays, and by inhibition of IKKb kinase activity towards the substrate GST-IkBa in in vitro assays. FGF19 stimulation of endogenous FGFR4 in TNFa-treated DU145 prostate cancer cells also leads to a decrease in IKKb activity, concomitant reduction in NFkB nuclear localization, and reduced apoptosis. Microarray analysis demonstrates that FGF19 + TNFa treatment of DU145 cells, in comparison with TNFa alone, favors proliferative genes while downregulating genes involved in apoptotic responses and NFkB signaling. Conclusions/Significance: These results identify a compelling link between FGFR4 signaling and the NFkB pathway, and reveal that FGFR4 activation leads to a negative effect on NFkB signaling including an inhibitory effect on proapoptotic signaling. We anticipate that this interaction between an RTK and a component of NFkB signaling will not be limited to FGFR4 alone.

We present Herschel far-infrared (FIR) observations of two sub-mm bright quasars at high redshift: SDSS J1148+5251 (z=6.42) and BR 1202-0725 (z=4.69) obtained with the PACS instrument. Both objects are detected in the PACS photometric bands. The Herschel measurements provide additional data points that constrain the FIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of both sources, and they emphasise a broad range of dust temperatures in these objects. For lambda_rest ~< 20mu, the two SEDs are very similar to the average SEDs of quasars at low redshift. In the FIR, however, both quasars show excess emission compared to low-z QSO templates, most likely from cold dust powered by vigorous star formation in the QSO host galaxies. For SDSS J1148+5251 we detect another object at 160mu with a distance of ~10 arcseconds from the QSO. Although no physical connection between the quasar and this object can be shown with the available data, it could potentially confuse low-resolution measurements, thus resulting in an overestimate of the FIR luminosity of the z=6.42 quasar., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the A&A special issue on Herschel

FIR imaging of interacting galaxies allows locating even hidden sites of star formation and measuring of the relative strength of nuclear and extra-nuclear star formation. We want to resolve the star-forming sites in the nearby system of the Antennae. Thanks to the unprecedented sharpness and depth of the PACS camera onboard ESA's Herschel Space Observatory, it is possible for the first time to achieve a complete assessment of individual star-forming knots in the FIR with scan maps at 70, 100, and 160 um. We used clump extraction photometry and SED diagnostics to derive the properties related to star-forming activity. The PACS 70, 100, and 160 um maps trace the knotty structure of the most recent star formation along an arc between the two nuclei in the overlap area. The resolution of the starburst knots and additional multi-wavelength data allow their individual star formation history and state to be analysed. In particular, the brightest knot in the mid-infrared (K1), east of the southern nucleus, exhibits the highest activity by far in terms of dust heating and star formation rate, efficiency, and density. With only 2 kpc in diameter, this area has a 10-1000 um luminosity, which is as high as that of our Milky Way. It shows the highest deficiency in radio emission in the radio-to-FIR luminosity ratio and a lack of X-ray emission, classifying it as a very young complex. The brightest 100 and 160 um emission region (K2), which is close to the collision front and consists of 3 knots, also shows a high star formation density and efficiency and lack of X-ray emission in its most obscured part, but an excess in the radio-to-FIR luminosity ratio. This suggests a young stage, too, but different conditions in its interstellar medium. We present the first mid-infrared Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of powerful radio galaxies at z>2. These radio galaxies, 4C +23.56 (z=2.48) and 6C J1908+7220 (z=3.53), both show strong mid-infrared continua, but with 6C J1908+7220 also showing strong PAH emission at rest-frame 6.2 and 7.7um. In 4C+23.56 we see no obvious PAH features above the continuum. The PAH emission in 6C J1908+7220 is the amongst the most distant observed to date and implies that there is a large instantaneous star formation rate (SFR). This is consistent with the strong detection of 6C J1908+7220 at far-IR and sub-mm wavelengths, indicative of large amounts of cold dust, ~10^9Msun. Powerful radio galaxies at lower redshifts tend to have weak or undetectable PAH features and typically have lower far-IR luminosities. In addition, 4C 23.56 shows moderate silicate absorption as seen in less luminous radio galaxies, indicating tau_{9.7um}=0.3+/-0.05. This feature is shifted out of the observed wavelength range for 6C J1908+7220. The correlation of strong PAH features with large amounts of cold dust, despite the presence of a powerful AGN, is in agreement with other recent results and implies that star formation at high redshift is, in some cases at least, associated with powerful, obscured AGN., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, includes emulateapj.cls, in press ApJL

Six Drosophila melanogaster tumor suppressor genes causing malignant or benign tumors in specific cell types are described. The wild-type alleles of these genes are instrumental in the differentiation of particular cell types. In the homozygous state, recessive mutations in the genes interrupt the differentiation of the cells and thus cause their uncontrolled, autonomous, lethal proliferation. The tumors show all major characteristics of malignant and benign neoplastic growth. Genomic sequences of four of the genes have been identified and are currently being characterized. In the course of the NIR/MIR AGN search combining the 6.7 mu ISOCAM Parallel Survey and 2MASS we have discovered 24 type-1 quasars about a third of which are too red to be discriminated by optical/UV search techniques. Here we report on a detailed case study of the reddest type-1 quasar of our sample (J2341) at redshift z=0.236 with M_K=-25.8 and J-K=1.95. We performed spectroscopy in the optical with VLT/FORS1 and in the MIR with Spitzer as well as NIR imaging with ISPI at CTIO. The optical and NIR observations reveal a star forming emission-line galaxy at the same redshift as the quasar with a projected linear separation of 1.8 arcsec (6.7 kpc). The quasar and its companion are embedded in diffuse extended continuum emission. Compared with its companion the quasar exhibits redder optical-NIR colours, which we attribute to hot nuclear dust. The MIR spectrum shows only few emission lines superimposed on a power-law spectral energy distribution. However, the lack of strong FIR emission suggests that our potentially interacting object contains much less gas and dust and is in a stage different from dust reddened ULIRG-AGN like Mrk 231. The optical spectrum shows signatures for reddening in the emission-lines and no post-starburst stellar population is detected in the host galaxy of the quasar. The optical continuum emission of the active nucleus appears absorbed and diluted. Even the combination of absorption and host dilution is not able to match J2341 with standard quasar templates. While the BLR shows only a rather moderate absorption of E_(B-V)=0.3, the continuum shorter than 4500 AA requires strong obscuration with E_(B-V)=0.7, exceeding the constraints from the low upper limit on the 9.7 mu silicate absorption. This leads us to conclude that the continuum of J2341 is intrinsically redder than that of typical quasars., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We report on recent progress in the treatment of two-loop binding corrections to the Lamb shift, with a special emphasis on S and P states. Context: A long-standing challenge of observational AGN research is to find type 2 quasars, the luminous analogues of Seyfert-2 galaxies. Aims: We search for luminous narrow-line type 2 AGN, characterise their properties, and compare them with broad-line type 1 AGN. Methods: Combining the ISOCAM parallel survey at 6.7 mu with 2MASS, we have selected AGN via near-mid-infrared colours caused by the hot nuclear dust emission. We performed spectroscopy in the optical and, for a subset of the sample, also in the mid-infrared with Spitzer. Results: We find nine type 2 AGN at redshift 0.10.5 we did not find type 2 AGN, probably because the hottest dust emission, still covered by the NIR filters, is obscured. The optical spectra of the type 2 host galaxies show young and old stellar populations. Only one object is an ultraluminous infrared galaxy with starburst. The 5-38 mu spectra of the two type 2 sources observed show a strong continuum with PAH emission in one case and silicate absorption in the other case. Conclusions: The near-mid-infrared selection is a successful strategy to find luminous type 2 AGN at low z. The objects exhibit a large range of properties so that it is difficult to infer details by means of popular SED fitting with simple average templates., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We study the narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 1386 by means of long-slit spectroscopy obtained with FORS1 at the VLT. We use the galaxy itself for subtracting the stellar template, applying reddening corrections to fit the stellar template to the spectra of the NLR. The continuum gets steadily redder towards the nucleus. The spatial distribution of the reddening derived from the Balmer decrement differs from the continuum reddening, indicating dust within the NLR with a varying column density along the line of sight. Using spatially resolved spectral diagnostics, we find a transition between central line ratios falling into the AGN regime and outer ones in the HII-region regime, occuring at a radius of ~6 arcsec (310 pc) in all three diagnostic diagrams. Applying CLOUDY photoionisation models, we show that the observed distinction between HII-like and AGN-like ratios in NGC 1386 represents a true difference in ionisation source and cannot be explained by variations of physical parameters such as ionisation parameter, electron density or metallicity. We interpret it as a real border between the NLR, i.e. the central AGN-photoionised region and surrounding HII regions. We derive surface brightness, electron density, and ionisation parameter as a function of distance from the nucleus. Both the electron density and the ionisation parameter decrease with radius. We discuss the consequences of these observations for the interpretation of the empirical NLR size-luminosity relation. In the outer part of the NLR, we find evidence for shocks, resulting in a secondary peak of the electron-density and ionisation-parameter distribution north of the nucleus. We compare the derivation of the dynamic Stark shift of hydrogenic energy levels in a classical framework with an adiabatically damped laser-atom interaction, which is equivalent to the Gell-Mann-Low-Sucher formula, and a treatment based on time-independent perturbation theory, with a second-quantized laser-atom dipole interaction Hamiltonian. Our analysis applies to a laser that excites a two-photon transition in atomic hydrogen or in a hydrogenlike ion with low nuclear charge number. Our comparisons serve to demonstrate why the dynamic Stark shift may be interpreted as a stimulated radiative correction and illustrates connections between the two derivations. The simplest of the derivations is the fully quantized approach. The classical and the second-quantized treatment are shown to be equivalent in the limit of large photon numbers., 5 pages

With the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) we have observed seven powerful FR2 radio galaxies and seven quasars. Both samples, the galaxies and the quasars, are comparable in isotropic 178 MHz luminosity (10^26.5 W/Hz < P 178MHz < 10^29.5 W/Hz) and in redshift range (0.05 < z < 1.5). We find for both samples similar distributions in the luminosity ratios of high- to low-excitation lines ([NeV] 14.3 mu / [NeII] 12.8 mu) and of high-excitation line to radio power ([NeV] 24.3 ��/ P 178MHz). This solves the long debate about the apparent difference of quasars and radio galaxies in favor of the orientation-dependent unified schemes. Furthermore, the luminosity ratio [OIII] 500.7 nm / [OIV] 25.9 mu of most galaxies is by a factor of ten lower than that of the quasars. This suggests that the optical emission from the central NLR is essentially absorbed (A_V} > 3) in the powerful FR2 galaxies and that the [OIII] 500.7 nm luminosity does not serve as isotropic tracer for testing the unified schemes., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted as Letter for A&A

We combined the ISOCAM Parallel Mode Survey at 6.7 micron (LW2 filter) with the Two Micron All Sky Survey in order to obtain a powerful tool to search for AGN independent of dust extinction. Using moderate colour criteria H-K>0.5 and K-LW2>2.7 we have selected a sample of 77 AGN candidates in an effective area of about 10 square degrees. By means of optical spectroscopy we find 24 (30%) type-1 QSOs at redshifts 0.10.8. About one third of the ISO-2MASS QSOs show so red optical colours, that they are missed in optical and UV AGN surveys like SDSS, 2DF, or HES. With a surface density of about 2 deg^(-2) down to R2, the inclusion of the ISO mid-infrared photometry significantly extends the capabilities of the pure 2MASS red AGN survey. We suggest that the newly found red AGN resemble young members of the quasar population, and that quasars spend much of their lifetime in a dust enshrouded phase., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication as A&A Letter

The collision of gas-rich galaxies is believed to produce strong shocks between their gas clouds which cause the onset of the observed bursts of extended star formation. However, the so far observed shock signatures in colliding galaxies can be explained essentially by winds from already existing massive stars and supernovae and thus do not give any evidence for an outstanding pre-starburst phase. Either pre-starburst gas shocks are too short-lived to be detected or one has to modify our perception of colliding galaxies. A dedicated analysis of ISOCAM-CVF mid-infrared spectral maps led us to the discovery of exceptional H_2 v=0-0 S(3) lambda = 9.66 um line emission from the "Antennae" galaxy pair, which is at an early stage of galaxy collision. Its H_2 line luminosity, normalized by the far-infrared luminosity, exceeds that of all other known galaxies and the strongest H_2 emission is spatially displaced from the known starbursts regions. This implies that most of the excited H_2 gas in the Antennae must be shocked due to the collision of the two galaxies. These observations indicate that the outstanding phase of pre-starburst shocks exists, and that they might be a key to our understanding of the formation of the first proto-galaxies., 4 pages, 3 figures (colour Fig. 2 in low resolution), accepted by A&A

Spectral energy distribution (SED) analyses, that include new millimeter (mm) to far-infrared (FIR) observations, obtained with continuum instruments on the Nobeyama and James Clerk Maxwell Telescopes and Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), are presented for seven, nearby (< 45Mpc) FIR-bright elliptical galaxies. These are analyzed together with archival FIR and short-wave radio data obtained from the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED). The radio to infrared SEDs are best fit by power-law plus greybody models of dust residing in the central galactic regions within 2.4kpc diameter and with temperatures between about 21 and 28K, emissivity index approximately 2, and masses from about 0.16 to 1.9 million solar masses. The emissivity index is consistent with dust constituting amorphous silicate and carbonaceous grains previously modeled for stellar-heated dust observed in the Galaxy and other nearby extragalactic sources. Using updated dust absorption coefficients for this type of dust, dust masses are estimated that are similar to those determined from earlier FIR data alone, even though the latter results implied hotter dust temperatures. Fluxes and masses that are consistent with the new FIR and submm data are estimated for dust cooler than 20K within the central galactic regions. Tighter physical constraints for such cold, diffuse dust (if it exists) with low surface brightness, will need sensitive FIR-submm observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope, SCUBA2, or ALMA., 22 pages, 9 figures, tentatively scheduled for the ApJ 10 September 2004, v612 issue
