The article presents the estimation of temperature and emissivities of niobium and 100c6 steel around their melting points using techniques based on the minimization of the least squares norm or on Bayesian inference. Two models were considered for the spectral emissivity, including a linear variation with respect to the wavelength and independent spectral values. The measured data used for the solution of the parameter estimation problem were radiative fluxes collected from a five-wavelength pyrometer. The experimental apparatus used in this work was designed for the characterization of metal samples with sizes of few millimeters at high temperatures, combining aerodynamic levitation and laser heating. The use of the linear spectral emissivity model provided quite consistent results with the ordinary least squares estimator and with stochastic simulations using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. Similarly, the model of independent spectral emissivities resulted in accurate emissivities, but it required an informative prior for temperature, such as the known melting point of the metal sample. Therefore, whatever the inverse method used, a priori supplementary information in terms of emissivities or temperatures are needed due to the temperature-emissivity correlation and the unknow emissivity behavior. This publication deals with the estimation of viscosity of liquid metals. It is proposed to discuss the possibility to determine this parameter during aerodynamic levitation experiments performed in ground laboratory. Once in liquid state, metallic sample is submitted to acoustic waves through the levitation gas making it oscillate and deform. A high speed camera records the radial periodic deformation during the relaxation period, meaning when incident waves stop. The evolutions of the sample radius over time are extracted from records and compared with analytical model based on the damped oscillator. The estimation of viscosity is performed by inverse method and leads to overestimated values by comparison with expected values. Then, numerical simulations (CFD) including or not levitation gas and gravity are performed to show the impact of gravity during measurements. New viscosity estimations show that the damped oscillation model (Lamb's theory) as it is classically used is not valid in aerodynamic levitation due to the influence of both gravity and gas. 16. Numerical Estimation of Nonlinear Thermal Conductivity of SAE 1020 Steel.

- Abstract
Thermally characterizing high-thermal conductivity materials is challenging, especially considering high temperatures. However, the modeling of heat transfer processes requires specific material information. The present study addresses an inverse approach to estimate the thermal conductivity of SAE 1020 relative to temperature during an autogenous LASER Beam Welding (LBW) experiment. The temperature profile during LBW is computed with the aid of an in-house CUDA-C algorithm. Here, the governing three-dimensional heat diffusion equation is discretized through the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and solved using the Successive Over-Relaxation (SOR) parallelized iterative solver. With temperature information, one may employ a minimization procedure to assess thermal properties or process parameters. In this work, the Quadrilateral Optimization Method (QOM) is applied to perform estimations because it allows for the simultaneous optimization of variables with no quantity restriction and renders the assessment of parameters in unsteady states valid, thereby preventing the requirement for steady-state experiments. We extended QOM's prior applicability to account for more parameters concurrently. In Case I, the optimization of the three parameters that compose the second-degree polynomial function model of thermal conductivity is performed. In Case II, the heat distribution model's gross heat rate (Ω) is also estimated in addition to the previous parameters. Ω [W] quantifies the power the sample receives and is related to the process's efficiency. The method's suitability for estimating the parameters was confirmed by investigating the reduced sensitivity coefficients, while the method's stability was corroborated by performing the estimates with noisy data. There is a good agreement between the reference and estimated values. Hence, this study introduces a proper methodology for estimating a temperature-dependent thermal property and an LBW parameter. As the performance of the present algorithm is increased using parallel computation, a pondered solution between estimation reliability and computational cost is achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The consequences of the first lockdown and the accompanying strict health restrictions on lung cancer patients during the first COVID-19 wave are a public health issue unresolved to date, due to limited clinical data and the lack of extended follow-up in published studies, most of which are registry-based. The ARTEMISIA trial is an exposed–unexposed study (one cohort performed in 2019, the other in 2020), which relied on a systematic medical review of over 800 patients and suggested that the health restrictions did not impact the outcome of lung cancer patients. Paradoxically, care delays after the first imaging were shortened during the COVID-19 period and, in multivariate analysis, the prognosis of the 2020 population was improved, probably linked to the extension of indications for immunotherapy and targeted therapies. To our knowledge, this study is the only one published with a median follow-up for overall survival exceeding 2 years, and, more broadly, this trial illustrates the adaptability of healthcare structures in a strict lockdown context. The consequences of the strict health restrictions during the first wave of COVID-19 on lung cancer (LC) patients are not known. This cohort study evaluated the impact of the initial lockdown on management of and long-term outcome in LC patients. This exposed–unexposed-type study included two evaluation periods of 6 months each in non-selected patients; one began on the first day of lockdown in 2020, and the other in 2019 during the same calendar period. Various indicators were compared: clinical profiles, management delays and overall survival beyond 2 years. A total of 816 patients from 7 public or private centers were enrolled. The clinical characteristics of the patients in 2020 did not differ from those in 2019, except that the population was older (p = 0.002) with more non-smokers (p = 0.006). Delays for pre-therapeutic medical management were generally reduced after the first imaging in 2020 (1.28 [1.1–1.49]). In the multivariate analysis, being part of the 2020 cohort was correlated with better prognosis (HR = 0.71 [0.5–0.84], p < 0.001). The gain observed in 2020 mainly benefited non-smoking patients, along with ECOG PS 0–2 (p = 0.01), stage 4 (p = 0.003), squamous cell carcinoma (p = 0.03) and receiving systemic therapy (p = 0.03). Rationale: Randomized controlled trials showed no effect of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on cardiovascular (CV) risk. However, patient selection and low PAP adherence preclude the generalization of their data to clinical samples. Objectives: To evaluate the association between hours of PAP use, mortality, and CV morbidity in real-life conditions. Methods: Data from the Pays de la Loire Cohort were linked to health administrative data to identify incident major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs; a composite outcome of mortality, stroke, and cardiac diseases) in patients with OSA who were prescribed PAP. Cox proportional hazards analyses were conducted to evaluate the association between MACEs and quartiles of average daily PAP use over the study period. Measurements and Main Results: After a median follow-up of 6.6 years, 961 of 5,138 patients experienced MACEs. Considering nonadherent patients (0-4 h/night) as the reference group, adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for MACEs were 0.87 (0.73-1.04) for the 4-6 h/night group, 0.75 (0.62-0.92) for the 6-7 h/night group, and 0.78 (0.65-0.93) for the ⩾7 h/night group (P = 0.0130). Sensitivity analyses using causal inference approaches confirmed the association of PAP use with MACEs. The association was stronger in male patients (P value for interaction = 0.0004), patients without overt CV disease at diagnosis (P < 0.0001), and those belonging to the excessively sleepy symptom subtype (P = 0.060). Conclusions: These real-life clinical data demonstrate a dose-response relationship between PAP adherence and incident MACEs in OSA. A unified constitutive model of yield strength evolution during heat treatment has been revised to simulate the hardness evolution during the post-welding heat treatment of AA2050-T34 Friction Stir Welded (FSW) plates. The model considers the strengthening by dislocations, solid solution, clusters, and the T
1 phase. As a result, the successful prediction of yield strength evolution during the aging of AA2050 with different initial tempers has been achieved. The kinetics of precipitation of the T1 phase during heat treatment has been characterized by electrical resistivity on the unwelded and FSW samples. The obtained results have been used to check the ability of the model to simulate the evolution of the relative volume fraction of the T1 phase and hardness during the post-welding heat treatment in the different zones of FSW samples. Despite some observed discrepancies on the top and bottom of the weld joint, the revised numerical model captures well the overall hardness profile after the post-weld heat treatment. The high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets can be utilized by using second generation conductors, but is very problematic as quench has become undetectable when the operating temperature is in the 65-77 K range. The different commercial codes are evaluated and a simple three-dimensional homogenized model is used for a racetrack coil.

This paper deals with the calculation of transient eddy currents by a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. After we illustrate the principle in a one-dimensional calculation, we treat a two-dimensional problem. Then, we show simulation results and we discuss advantages and disadvantages of this method. An important advantage is that MCMC methods can be more efficient than finite-element methods in transient problems because they give an estimate of the solution at a point in space without calculation of the whole field distribution.
